Guest Speaker Daryl Bruest

Guest Speaker Daryl spoke on his trek of Kokoda 30 months ago when he spent 8 days there.  It had been a dream of Daryl’s to conquer the track & so to celebrate his 60th birthday he invited family members to join him.

They flew into Port Moresby, which they didn’t find to be a very safe place. They then travelled to Popendetta, where they were all packed into open back trucks to travel 2 hours along mostly unsealed roads to the start of the track. They trekked in groups of 20 & had to carry their own rations.

The troupe started about 7 in the morning and had a rest every 2 or 3 hours for up to 30 mins.   The track is very rough with exposed tree roots, etc, which meant you can’t take your eyes off the ground to avoid tripping.   They stayed in a village each night. The trek lasted for 7 days with the last day being the hardest. Daryl greatly admired the strength and fortitude of the porters; and his son donated all his clothes and boots to one of the porters at the end of the trek and received a beautiful hand-carved plaque in return.

There are many memorials along the way, most of which were funded by Australian Government, as is the school at  Kokoda

After an absorbing presentation, Daryl was thanked by Henk.

Daryl’s talk was very inspirational

Red Shield Appeal Roster

We had a good showing by members and a good taking at the Red Shield Appeal at Foodworks this past weekend, but we have more work to do.  We’ll be collecting donations at the footy this weekend, both in Ganmain and Coolamon.  It looks like the games are on SUNDAY, and not Saturday as previously advertised.  We need additional bodies on the day, especially the later shift (12:00-2:00) in Ganmain (see roster below).  Please let Paul know ASAP if you’re able to help!

May is Youth Service Month

Image result for rotary month may
May is the month when Rotary focuses on Youth. The link between Rotary and youth for all our Clubs is amazing. Every club that I have visited engages with our Youth Programmes in some way or another, whether it be Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA), Rotary Youth Programme of Enrichment (RYPEN), Rotary Youth Driving Award, Rotaract, Interact, District Scholarships, Rotary International Youth Exchanges, Peer Support Programmes in schools, Cure Kids, Life Education vans, Literacy Programmes in schools, and many others.
