VISITING ROTARIAN

Rotarian John McKenny from Glen INnes

It not often we receive visiting Rotarians, however recently John McKenny has made up at our club and John is from the Rotary Club of Glen Innes.

John is working in the Coolamon Shire at the moment and we have enjoyed John's company.

    John McKenny of the Glen Innes club making-up reminded me of the dim and distant past. When the Auckland East club in D-9920 was chartered in 1967 it was chartered as the RC Glen Innes and had a twin club arrangement with Glen Innes in NSW, with annual exchanges and a trophy for the most attending them. Glen Innes in Auckland is a poor people area and fringes the very up-market suburbs of Kohimarama, St Heliers and Glendowie, where the members lived, but worked in Glen Innes. The RI rules of the time said that you had to live and/or work within the defined area of a club. The name did not sit well with some of the members and about the time I joined in 1970 it had changed the name to the more salubrious Funny people, humans. As Shakespeare said,

    Go safely, old mate.
