COOLAMON ROTARY CLUB MEETING August 18th. 2025
President Mary welcomed 21 members and the following guests, Rhiannon Druce and Greg Dillon our guest speakers accompanied by Laura Munro and Craig Sinclair.
Mary then spoke on the following subjects:
- We need some volunteers for the Ganmain Show car parking on this coming Saturday 23rd August. A roster was created and the result:
- 8-10am Bruce, Howard, Ian and Gary. 10-12.00pm Albert, Bernadette, Henk and Anne.
- Lorraine Farrelly looking for a donation from the CRC for their annual boxes project. The members recommended to teh Board that we donate $500.
- Daryl advised us that teh cooking of teh Anzac biscuits for the Gears & Beers has been set for Saturday 27th November. Details to follow.
After dinner we drew the raffle and prize was won by Alex and a second prize went to one of our guests Laura Munro.
Rhiannon Druce and Greg Dillon were introduced by Mary and the subject being the proposed Canola Run to be held next year probably September.
The Canola Run will be supporting the Good Talk charity in aid of Bi-polar and mental health awareness.
The run will start from the Marrar Oval and finish at the Coolamon Hotel. The run will go over back roads and private properties including Vicki and Barry, property. Hopefully teh canola will be in full bloom by the time.
The goal is to get 500 entrants and there will be other events such as a children’s’ run around the Marrar Oval.
The group is represented by the three adjoining Shires of Junee, Temora and Coolamon.
The main goal of this presentation was to obtain the blessing and support of our Rotary club. That is Coolamon RC will be the event organiser and to provide insurance for the event.
An open discussion then took place between our guests and our members and among the items discussed were:
- Allergies to canola pollen was brought up by Leslie.
- Daryl spoke on an example of what can go wrong in these types of events, as in Gears & Beers with a heart attack. Good medical planning saved the rider’s life.
- Entrants would need to sign a waiver.
The idea received a positive response from our members and Mary has since said:
“I believe last night‘s meeting was positive with the canola run proposal. We will set up a committee to get things moving. if anyone wants to be on the committee, please let me know.
I believe this will be positive for the Rotary club of Coolamon as well as the Coolamon community and should turn into a great fundraiser.”
A vote of thanks was given to our guests with a promise to get back to them with the formation of a committee.
Stand in S@A Ian conducting a quick and fun fines session.
All in all an excellent evening once again with good fellowship before and after the meeting which closed at 9.00pm.

ROTARY NEWS
1. CHILD POLIOMYELITIS
This haunting yet deeply moving photograph from the 1940s shows a tiny infant inside a miniature iron lung, with only the child’s head visible above the rigid casing. The machine, specially designed for babies, was a critical invention in the fight against polio — a disease that, at its worst, paralysed the muscles needed to breathe. For families and caregivers, this device offered not just hope but a literal lifeline during the darkest days of the epidemic.
While the image is sobering, it also tells a story of resilience, compassion, and the human drive to heal. It reminds us of the battles fought by doctors, nurses, and inventors who gave everything to protect the most vulnerable. Thanks to global vaccination efforts launched in the 1950s, images like this have become rare relics of the past — yet they remain powerful symbols of both suffering and survival in the face of unimaginable challenges.

Grahame Miles noted: “One of the great projects and initiatives our club was involved with years ago. We need some contacts at the school to get it up and running again.
