Our guest speaker Jeanette Lloyd was introduced by president Adrian.  Jeanette is an accredited mental health worker and Jeanette has worked for 10 years with the Department of Defence.  Jeanette has done a variety of work in mental health and has been in private practice for the last 4 years.

Jeanette said that the topic of mental illness causes distress.  Jeanette said that 2 out of 5 Australians have experienced mental disorder and that 8.6 Australians commit suicide every day.  Just about 10 million Australians have been affected by suicide either close to the family or someone they know.

Jeanette spoke about the importance of understanding mental health issues and how it impacts on the quality of life, especially with relationships with others.

Jeanette then went on to describe the conditions of mental health including:

  • Excessive worrying about everything.
  • The stigma associated with mental disorders.
  • Other conditions included:
    • Health
    • Finances
    • Family
    • Loneliness
    • Bullying
    • Unemployment

Jeanette said that some areas to work on are stress management,  self esteem, beliefs and values, climate change,  among several areas that create stress.

This was an excellent presentation and mental health can be controlled and managed by first visiting your GP and get the required medication.  Then working on the symptoms by counselling, physical activity, community support and especially family support.

President Adrian gave a vote of thanks to Jeanette for her talk.

The evening concluded with the raffle won by Garth and the 2nd prize to Bear.

S@A Albert conducted a brief fines session and Grahame was fined, for a change, this time for being an expert meteorologist.

The meeting closed at 9.00pm.

ROTARY NEWS

1. QUEENSLAND FLOODS

Right now, towns in South West Queensland are underwater. Places like Adavale, Quilpie, and Jundah are facing record-breaking floods, homes are submerged, and families are stranded. But if you turn on the TV, you’d barely know it’s happening.

Compare this to the floods on the East Coast—when the rivers rise in Brisbane or Sydney, helicopters are deployed, emergency shelters are opened, and live coverage dominates the news.
Out here? People are left to fend for themselves, waiting on rescue teams that are stretched too thin, musterers in their helicopters doing what they can or help just not coming at all.

Where’s the national coverage? Where’s the support? Why is it that when disaster strikes the bush, it’s a footnote—if it’s even mentioned at all?

To the people living through this right now, we see you. And to everyone else—𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘬 𝘶𝘱. Because these communities deserve better.
