COOLAMON ROTARY CLUB MEETING September 1st. 2025

President Mary welcomed 21 members and 6 guests to our meeting.  Our guests were two friends of Mary, Leslie and Katie and from the Wollundry RC we had Phil McIntosh, David Byfield, Peter Crozier and David Pyke.

The following items were discussed during our meeting:

  • Mary thanked Anne for distributing the Coolamon Community Chronicle.
  • Anne is doing her best to fill the 33 slots for the upcoming National Junior Bike event at Wantabadgery and Wagga from the 18th to the 21st September.  The roster is going around however if you have not volunteered as yet please contact Anne.
  • Reminder that Saturday 27th September is Gears & Beers ANZAC biscuit making day at the Coolamon Central School from 9.00am.
  • Henk spoke briefly on the upcoming School breakfast catering for disadvantaged children.  The next breakfasts are on Thursday 4th and 18th September.  Anne will help Henk on the 4th September 7.00am start.  Henk said that the children really enjoyed the cooked breakfast last time.
  • Mary reminded our members that the AGM is on Monday 10th November.  So would all members consider joining the board of directors, especially President Elect Nominee for 2027-2028.
  • Mary is looking for members to join the Canola Run Committee.
  • The next Board meeting is at 5.15pm on Monday 8th September.
  • Mary reminded all present that we have a joint social meeting with Junee RC at the Bottom Pub on the 29th September.

Gears and Beers 2025 presentation by Phil Macintosh, David Byfield, Peter Crozier and David Pyke  from the Wollundry RC.

None of these Rotarians from Wollundry RC needed any introduction to our members present, we are good old friends.  Phil was the speaker on behalf of Gears and Beers 2025.

Phil presented the plans, routes and instructions for marshals via a power point slide show.  As always Phil did a very professional job and some of the points worth remembering included but by no means all, the following:

  1. Phil was very sincere in his thanks to our club for the work we do for Gears & Beers and in his words the event would not exist if it was not for our club.
  2.  The event is now into it’s 13th year and becoming an iconic cycle event where people come from all over Australia for the weekend.
  3. The Dirty 130 is one of the events that creates a lot of interest as the ability for riders to have an extensive gravel sector through major farms such as the Langtry’s property this year.  There are 20 entries from Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.
  4. Phil said that the riders are always super impressed by the aid and comfort stations that we provide.
  5. The event is rated very highly in the Australian cycling fraternity and is one of the epic bike rides of the year.
  6. Phil then shared a booklet and highlighted some pints for our marshals to absorb.
  7. All the courses are now finalised and ready to go with a traffic management book to be made available.
  8. Important to remember for all of our volunteers to wear our Hi-Viz vests, bring a chair a mobile phone and remember that Sunday the 5th of October is the start of daylight saving for 25-26.
  9. This year the Dirty 130 is going clockwise and the first riders should get to Coolamon by 8.30am having left Wagga at 7.30am.
  10. The other ride that will come to Coolamon is the 105 Roadie event.

Now there is a lot of information on the Gears & Beers website so please visit:

There were many questions for the Wollundry team to answer and Phil concluded by inviting us all to the festival after the event on Sunday and we are very welcome.  Someone suggested a courtesy bus!

Daryl Breust, the CRC Chair for Gears & Beers, thanked Phil for the talk and for all the information.

We then had a raffle draw and the 1st prize went to John Bond and the 2nd prize to Mark Reardon.

Our S@A Dick conducted a spirited and very amusing fines session and as always when Dick calls the shots no one was spared tonight.  Daryl was fined for his upcoming trip to China and Japan and we all wish Jann and Daryl a safe and wonderful trip.

We ended the meeting at 9.10pm another excellent night for our club.

PERU TO CAIRNS

2025 MILES 9000 duration 120+ Days charity goal £1m.

THE MCLEAN BOTHERS

This is one of the most inspirational stories about raising funds for clean water projects in Madagascar.

They are Lachlan, Ewan and Jamie Maclean. They are from Edinburgh but live on a croft in the Highlands where they trained to become the fastest team to row across the Pacific Ocean.

On the 29th September they made it to CAIRNS from LIMA on the THE PERUVIAN COAST.

Above landing in Cairns Saturday 29th August.

“Clean water is the most basic human necessity on the planet, yet 10% of people worldwide don’t have access to it.

The impact from our Pacific row will be delivered through our trusted partner charity, Feedback Madagascar (SC023568). Our focus is cantilever and gravity fed borehole systems in communities living on the edges of the south-east rainforest corridor.” The Mclean Brothers.
