Coolamon Rotary Bulletin #1819-8

Week of 20th August, 2018

President Daryl welcomed 13 members and presented Dave McK with his director’s badge as he was away on the changeover night. We all then enjoyed a beautiful steak and veges & banana fritters for desert.

As there was no speaker on the evening we discussed upcoming events, including:

  •  the planning for catering at this w/e event for the Randall family fundraiser. A roster sent around, but there are a few gaps to be filled.  If you are able to help on the day please let Secretary Paul know.
  • Jake the local police officer will be guest speaker next week. Should be an interesting evening!
  • Friday Sept 7 –  Junior football & netball presentation night;  we are catering at the back of the Sport & Rec Club & our club is covering the cost of the meat.
  • Motion approved that we donate $1000 to the drought appeal which we will send to David Benn, the local coordinator.
  • Daryl brought up the possibility of changing venue for Bingo to the Uniting Church hall;  it was decided that the 6 captains will have a meeting to discuss.

The winner for the correct answer in the Bulletin was Dick J.

John Bond was the lucky winner of the raffle.

Coolamon Rotary Bulletin #1819-7

Week of 13th August, 2018

In lieu of a regular meeting, this week we hosted a special speaker in the form of Robyn Lewis, a former ice addict who spoke about her remarkable recovery.   Several member of the Coolamon Lions club were present, along with a few students at Coolamon Central School and other members of the community.  Robyn described how she became addicted to numerous substances (simultaneously) and wrestled with this crippling affliction for 17 years.  Along the way, she became estranged from her daughter and saw her partner and several friends meet violent ends, either at the hands of others in the drug community or their own hand.  Robyn supported her drug habit mainly by shoplifting, which is apparently a common source of income for many drug addicts and has become a significant financial burden on many retailers.  Amazingly, Robyn has been able to turn her life around, largely due to the efforts of SMART Recovery, an international program that assists addicts in kicking their drug habits.

It was truly inspiring to see how Robyn has been able to resume a normal, productive life.  Robyn is now employed full time and has made it her mission to inform others about the dangers of ice and other addictive substances, mostly on her own dime.  Robyn has been frustrated, however, by the unwillingness of school districts to allow her to spread the word to school-aged children, which is probably where this education is needed most.  The club will be pursuing various angles to see if inroads can be made to the schools.

President Daryl thanks Robyn Lewis after her presentation.

The club thanked Robyn by presenting her with a financial contribution to help defray the cost of travelling to various locations in the area to give similar presentations.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

A lesson on how consultants can make a difference in an organization:

Last week, we took some friends to a new restaurant, ‘Steve’s Place,’ and noticed that the waiter who took our order carried a spoon in his shirt pocket. It seemed a little strange. When the bus-boy brought our water and utensils, I observed that he also had a spoon in his shirt pocket. Then I looked around and saw that all the staff had spoons in their pockets. When the waiter came back to serve our soup I inquired, ‘Why the spoon?’

‘Well, ‘he explained, ‘the restaurant’s owner hired Andersen Consulting to revamp all of our processes. After several months of analysis, they concluded that the spoon was the most frequently dropped utensil. It represents a drop frequency of approximately 3 spoons per table per hour. If our personnel are better prepared, we can reduce the number of trips back to the kitchen and save 15 man-hours per shift.’

As luck would have it, I dropped my spoon and he replaced it with his spare. ‘I’ll get another spoon next time I go to the kitchen instead of making an extra trip to get it right now.’ I was impressed.

I also noticed that there was a string hanging out of the waiter’s fly. Looking around, I saw that all of the waiters had the same string hanging from their flies. So, before he walked off, I asked the waiter, ‘Excuse me, but can you tell me why you have that string right there?’

‘Oh, certainly!’ Then he lowered his voice. ‘Not everyone is so observant. That consulting firm I mentioned also learned that we can save time in the restroom.
By tying this string to the tip of our you-know-what, we can pull it out without touching it and eliminate the need to wash our hands, shortening the time spent in the restroom by 76.39%.’

I asked quietly, ‘After you get it out, how do you put it back in?’

‘Well,’ he whispered, ‘I don’t know about the others, but I use the spoon.’

Coolamon Rotary Bulletin #1819 – 5

Week of 30th July

Sixteen members plus guests Helen were present to enjoy our weekly meeting. A delicious steak was served and the discussion for the general meeting was held. Discussion points for the evening included:

  • New benches for the food van have been installed and are looking good. The electrical work still needs to be completed and will be done so shortly so the van can be ready for the 25th of August for the Randle family fund raiser. Some discussion ensued about the gas powered water heater in the van with concerns that it cannot be emptied effectively because it’s bolted to the benchtop. There was general agreement to look into the possibility of getting an electrical water heater that can be emptied, however the electrical load in the van will be a consideration.
  • The club was successful in getting a grant from the Dick Smith Compassionate Giving program that is run through Rotary. Initially the application was for the amount of $3200, with $1600 being donated by our club. However the program suggested increasing the funding to $5000 if the club could find additional donors.  Beyond Band will contribute $900, making up the shortfall.   The money will go to the Studholm family who have ongoing care needs as Will Studholm recovers from a brain aneurism suffered two years ago.
  • Rural Outreach Counselling, Inc has approached the Coolamon Shire to help implement the Mate Keepers program in Coolamon. Mate Keepers will be community members who will keep their ‘ear to the ground’ in order to support people in the local community with mental health issues. Rotary members in attendance all agreed it was worthwhile and agreed to lend support any way they could to get the program running as a part of Rural Outreach Counselling.
  • Representatives from Wollundry will be here on the 20th to discuss the club’s assistance with Gears and Beers, which will be held on the October long weekend.
  •  A committee needs to be formed to start planning for the New Year’s Eve celebration in Coolamon.
  • Neil is planning to hold another Peace Day dinner in March of next year. In mid-February there will be a ceremony conducted in Coolamon by both Christian and Muslim representatives to demonstrate that peace is for everyone.
  • Wayne gave us the good news that there are two potential new members for the club. There was the suggestion that we run a small advertising campaign that Rotary is not just a ‘men’s club’ and that it has representatives from both genders and all walks of life.
  • Congratulations to the Chronicle which is starting its third year.
  • There was a suggestion that we hold a music festival  with Music 4 Mates as a community event to lift spirits given the dry currently being experienced.
  • Wayne has had contact from the End Trachoma project of District 9700 and lent his experience and connections to helping to transport much needed goods to Alice Springs.
  • Robin Lewis will be coming to talk drug and alcohol issues on the 13th August.  It will be a general community night starting at 7:30 pm with finger food to be served. An invitation to the community will be posted and the school will be invited.
  • The opening night for the art exhibition at the Up To Date store went off really well with approximately 180 people in attendance. Carol Stuart won the Rotary-sponsored section of Fakes and Forgeries for $200.
  • Community Youth Worker Lewis Greer was recently appointed and has been invited as a guest speaker to talk on his role.
  • A roster will be put out for the Randle Family fund raiser on the 25th August. Profits on the day will go to support the family.
  • Lions has asked if Rotary can assist with the food van for the Fire Museum muster on Sunday the 31st September.
