Meeting of Monday 27th May

Our President John Bond “Bondy” welcomed 16 members to the meeting tonight.

A low turnout of members but to be expected with sowing almost done by our farmer members.  We also have some members away on holidays.

We had some business including:

  • Henk reported on the progress of the telephone book which is going well with many invoices sent out and the funds are coming in.  Henk handed out a list of the committed advertisers so that members can see who we may have missed.
  • Anne read out a letter of thanks from the organisers of the recent MHERV van visit to Coolamon, thanking our Rotary Club for doing a wonderful job.  Thy are talking about another visit in 6 months.
  • John G advised the meeting on the progress of the Singapore RI Convention with over 14,000 delegates attending.  There is a pictorial of Singapore24 in Rotary News below.  The next RICON will be in Calgary in 2025.
  • It was announced that Bear had won this week’s weight loss competition.
  • Henk advised members present that we need to register any event that we organise with our District 9705 insurance officer.
  • Mary spoke on the upcoming Red Shield Appeal.
  • Adrian sent an email advising us that we have a “Street Raffle” set for Friday 7th and Saturday the 8th of June to be held at Foodworks.  Volunteers are needed please.

Paul started a joke telling episode and some good jokes were told with Vicki getting the most laughs with her joke on a group of nuns.

Daryl was stand in S@Arms and did a great job at short notice.

Lexi won first prize in the raffle and John G won the second prize.

The meeting finished earlier than usual which gave us all plenty of time for some good fellowship.

THE PUZZLER

Answers to the last puzzles:

Brain teaser: The man was able to see the woman and brake in time because it was in broad daylight!

Wordy one: All five words contain the five vowels (A, E, I, O, U) once and only once, but the vowels are in alphabetical order only in the word ‘facetious’.

This month’s puzzles:

Wordy one: I am a five-letter word beginning with the letter ‘o’. Add a letter at the beginning of the word to create a six-letter word meaning the opposite of the five-letter word. What are the two words?

Rebus puzzles: What common expressions are depicted in the rebus puzzles below?

JUST FOR LAUGHS

534 Spectacles

The Rotary Club of Hout Bay recently delivered 534 pairs of spectacles to Hout Bay learners. We partnered with Jonga Trust, a specialist eye-care NGO, to provide vision screening and testing for over 1979 learners at Disa, Kronendal, Sentinel, Oranjekloof and Hout Bay Primary Schools, plus Silikamva and Hout Bay High School. Over 25% of the learners screened needed spectacles. Since the start of this programme in 2019, over 1200 Hout Bay children have received new spectacles, helping them to see properly in the classroom.

The Rotary Club of Hout Bay is committed to supporting the youth of Hout Bay with various projects. If you are interested in learning more about The Rotary Club of Hout Bay and our projects, please visit our website – https://rotaryhoutbay.org

2. SINGAPORE 2024 RI CONVENTION UNDER WAY

The Rotary convention is where friendship and learning come together to inspire you. In Singapore you’ll connect with people of action from around the globe at Rotary’s biggest event of the year.

We’ll share fresh perspectives, inspiration, and hope – with each other and the world! The convention features world-class dining and cultural attractions, distinguished speakers, energizing breakout sessions, and much more.

Singapore 2024 is well under way and as you may know I have attended 7 RI Conventions to date.  The first was in Chicago in 2005.  I strongly recommend that when you have the time you should attend a Rotary International world conference.  Here are some photos from Singapore.

I have compiled a thumbnail size gallery below, just click on the thumbnail for a larger version.

Part 1 Pre-Convention Activities:

Part 2 The Convention Underway Saturday May 25th:

Part 3 The Convention Continues May 26-27th:

Part 3 The Convention Closes Wednesday May 27th:

By all accounts this was a very successful RI Convention.  There were up to 15,000 delegates attending including many from our D9705 including our DG Andrea Grosvenor and our DGE Rob Uhl.  here are a few more photos:
