COOLAMON ROTARY CLUB MEETING August 11th. 2025

President Mary welcomed 22 members and the following guests, Marilyn Jennings, Maureen Hulsman, Ivan Furner and Geoff McKenzie the husband of our guest speaker Helen Moriarty.  A very good role up of members so good to see.

We welcomed back Annie from her adventures in WA.  Annie said that she travelled over 12,000kms and crossed the Nullabor in her campervan.

President Mary assisted in the notes from the meeting as below:

A couple of items from the Board meeting last night

A Garden Viewing committee is being established for 2026 Garden viewings, if anyone wishes to join the committee or knows of anyone with Gardens that may be used please let us know.  So far for the committee we have Lexi, Annie, Albert, Bear, Garth we need a chairperson for the committee and need to find Gardens ASAP

We will hold a major Christmas raffle November and December 2025, we will try to involve the school and the proceeds to go to presents to be distributed by Salvation Army

We decided to help out with The Fitness for School breakfast program, this is on fortnightly for the rest of the year during school terms. the next one will be on Thursday 21 August. Our club assists with cooking at the school from 7.30. Lexi is the contact person for this. Henk, Alex and Lexi helped out last week it is only for about 1 hour

We will look into holding a bush dance or similar event as a major fundraiser early next year

There is a meeting at the Sports club tonight at 7.30 to set up a Can Assist Coolamon branch.

BREAKING NEWS.

CRC was successful in obtaining a grant of $1423 towards the year 12 Scholarship we had applied for $3000 this will help fund the scholarship

I am pleased to advise that your application “Scholarship for Year 12 student” has been approved with a reduction in funding to AUD 1,423.

After dinner Helen Moriarty our speaker for the night held our attention in her talk on the effects of Organophosphates on the health of farmers in the main.

Helen had some excellent slides to explain her work at the CSU.  Helen was working in the pathology department of St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney for 26 years and in 994 moved to Coolamon and started work at the CSU.  It was here That Helen met Geoff and they were married in 1997.

There were so many interesting parts to Helen’s talk, far too many for me to compile here, however some of the areas that got our attention included:

  • Organophosphates (OPs) are found in fungicides, herbicides and household products.
  • Main effects of OPPs in the human body include difficulty in breathing with long term memory loss and chronic fatigue.
  • OPs bind to the DNA and break down chromosomes on our body.  This can lead to cancer and Parkinson’s disease.

  • It is better to avoid exposure to OPs than to have to treat the consequences.
  • Helen led a study of some 77 Riverina farmers which became drawn out due the drought at that time.
  • 78% of those surveyed never followed safety precautions when using OPs.
  • Two thirds of the farmers showed signs of elevated levels of the poison.
  • Helen is looking for simple methods of mobile testing with potential screen test for any disruption to our DNA.

There were many questions from those present and Lexi proposed a vote of thanks for Helen’s excellent talk.

The raffle was won by Maureen Hulsman and Bondy got second prize.

This was followed by the S@A Dick and his Cpl Garth.  These two should go on a stage!!  They even fined one of our guests.  The most interesting fine was on Mary for competing in the City to Surf run!

Our sincere condolences to Bear on the passing of his mother.

We wish all those who are travelling safe returns especially Garth who is going on an adventure.  See this bulletin.

2.  SOME MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT IDEAS.

ROTARY is evolving—because service should fit the lives of those who give it.

With new club formats, we are removing barriers and creating opportunities:

  • Cause-based Clubs – Driven by a shared passion, from environmental conservation to literacy and maternal health.
  • Satellite Clubs – Connected to an existing club but meeting at times and places that work for members.
  • Passport Clubs – Freedom to attend any Rotary meeting worldwide and focus on hands-on projects.
  • E-Clubs / Online Clubs – Virtual meetings for those with mobility, travel, or location constraints.
  • Corporate Clubs – Sponsored by companies, allowing teams of employees to serve together.
  • Hybrid Clubs – Blending in-person and online engagement for maximum flexibility.

We are opening doors for people from every walk of life to connect, serve, and lead in ways that match their passions and schedules.

It’s Rotary without limits. If you have the heart to serve, we now have a club that fits your life. Alone, we can do much. Together, we can do what once seemed impossible.

3.  WHAT IS THE THREAD BETWEEN THESE 5 COUNTRIES?

Uzbekistan

Kazakhstan

Kyrgyzstan

Tajikistan

Turkmenistan

The common thread is:

All our members wish you a safe journey old mate and come back with some amazing stories and photos.

N.B. SLIDE SHOWS via POWERPOINT

Just want to highlight the need for a CRC lap top which works with our own projector.  This would make life a lot easier in setting up a slide show presentation, which is normal these days.  This would make sure that we have the right equipment for the guest speakers.  We should also advise guest speakers that we have a lap top and all they need to bring is a thumb drive.  We have come a long way since the days of the glass slides shown on a lantern projector as seen below:

1  ROTARY PRESIDENT’S AUGUST MESSAGE

Rotary International President  Rotary International.

Francesco Arezzo

Thank you for the opportunity to reflect on how Rotary helped me grow, what I hope to accomplish in the year ahead, and few personal stories about my family, my passions, and what has moved me most. I am deeply honoured to serve and to Unite for Good with each of you.

August is Membership Month, but our commitment to growth and connection is year-round. When we focus on growing Rotary, we grow our ability to serve, to lead, and to bring lasting change

Membership growth isn’t just about numbers. It’s about opening doors. It’s about inviting more people who are ready to give their time, talents, and hearts to a cause greater than themselves. When we welcome new members, we bring in fresh ideas and new energy. We expand our impact, strengthen our clubs, and ensure that Rotary continues to evolve with the world around us.

2  ROTARY IN TIMOR LESTE

Timor-Leste has officially been certified malaria-free by the World Health Organisation!

RAWCS is proud to have played a role in this incredible milestone through the Australian Rotary Against Malaria (ARAM) programme.
Thanks to the dedication of local health leaders and international collaboration, Timor-Leste has now recorded three consecutive years of zero indigenous malaria cases—a historic achievement for a tropical, low-income nation.
Malaria remains one of the world’s deadliest diseases, yet this shows what’s possible when we come together to fight back.
Join us as we continue working toward a malaria-free world. Every step counts.

1.  The RC of Leeton’s Debutante Ball 2025

One of the privileges and highlights of being a DG is the annual RC of Leeton’s Debutante Ball.  It is a tradition that is being upheld by Leeton Rotary and looks better each year.  Well done Leeton RC.  Here are some photos from the very recent event held in Leeton.

Every Formal Function has an Official Ceremony as a small part of the event. The Rotary Club is no exception. It is in this part where President of Leeton Rotary for 2025-26. Jennifer Newton OAM welcomed all to the Ball and invited Rotary District 9705 District Governor Rob Uhl to open the Ball and announce the Belle of The Debs for 2025. The presentation of the lovely bouquet from Olive and Thistle was made to Sharna Morriss by Lily Dal Broi.

This is the moment everyone was waiting for. The presentation of the Debs and Partners to Rob Uhl, Rotary District 9705 Governor.

Every couple were loudly applauded and cheered on, as they made their entry and throughout their walk on the carpet to meet Rob.

Thanks to NDM Photography for the photos.

2. HAY RUN FOR THE DROUGHT IN SA & VICTORIA

After eight weeks of planning, hundreds of phone calls, countless emails, spreadsheets, forms, permits, and many late nights, the 2025 SA Hay Run has hit the road.

A joint effort between Farmers Across Borders. Hay from WA and Need for Feed Australia, this is the biggest convoy the volunteer-run organisation has ever coordinated. Up to 84 trucks loaded with more than 6,000 bales of hay and straw will make its way from all over Western Australia to farming families in drought-affected regions across South Australia.

Split into four groups and supported by a fleet of vehicles, the convoy is a remarkable show of generosity, with volunteers from across WA donating their time, trucks and fuel to support farmers doing it tough.

The schedule is as follows:
• Thursday 24 July: Trucks arrive at Fraser Range from various WA loading points and rest overnight.
• Friday 25 July: Early morning departure to Mundrabilla for overnight rest.
• Saturday 26 July: Convoy continues to Wudinna, where they’ll stay overnight.
• Sunday 27 July: Trucks fan out to various unload points across SA to deliver the hay before heading home.

Organisers say the support from locals, whether a wave, toot or simple “thank you”, goes a long way in lifting spirits. If you’re near Fraser Range, Mundrabilla, or Wudinna during the convoy’s stopovers, you’re invited to say g’day and show your support.

3.  JOHN HEWKO CEO OF ROTARY INTERNATIONAL

Hi I’m John, General Secretary and CEO of Rotary International and I’d like to take a moment to reintroduce myself.

My parents’ journey as immigrants shaped my lifelong path in public service, international law, and global development. I’ve helped write a constitution, negotiated billions in foreign aid, and yes, once played a very niche role in Ukraine’s history by running a small but mighty copy machine.

I’m a father and avid cyclist. I speak five languages including English, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Ukrainian. Back in 1989, I somehow managed to get married and open a law office all in the same month.

These days, I work with individuals driving global change. I’ve learned that partnerships and progress go hand in hand. Change starts with people who simply care enough to act. Thanks for being here.

PRESIDENT MARY’S NOTES

Good Morning

I hope that everyone is having a great day. During our meeting on July 28th, Rhiannon Druce and Greg Dillon will join us to discuss a proposal for a running event , the Canola run which will hopefully become an annual event. The proposed date for this year is 7 September.

Rhiannon also mentioned she may bring chocolates as she is marketing manager of the Junee Chocolate and Liquorice factory.

They are asking for Rotary to help with this event and I understand to partner with this event.  Rhiannon is on the Canola Trail Committee and they have come up with the concept as the event will benefit the local community, Rhiannon has had discussions with Coolamon Shire Council the Football Club will also be assisting.

The proposed route for the half marathon is to start at Marrar football ground and finish at the bottom pub it will only be in Coolamon shire as this is the only council that has supported them so far with the idea.  They will also be holding events for children. This would be a great event for the community and could turn into a great fundraiser for Rotary if it could get support of the community.

I met with Rhiannon yesterday and have also asked for more information, something to think about 1

I won’t be at the meeting this week so will see you on 28th July.  Mary.

OUT AND ABOUT

Where were you on July 20th 1969?

Did you know that Neil Armstrong, the very first man to step foot on the moon, was a proud member of Rotary? It’s fascinating to think that someone who made history in space also contributed to community service on Earth!

I was in Melbourne and watched it on a TV in a shop window and then bought several slides from The Age.

1. COMMUNITY LIBRARIES: AN IDEA

Bringing free libraries to the community.

A book can open doors to new worlds, spark imagination, and inspire change. That belief is at the heart of the Bromley Rotary Game Changers in south-east London, where their latest initiative is installing free little libraries throughout the community. The idea is simple: take a book, leave a book. Each library is a small beacon of connection, creativity, and access to knowledge.

Some comments:

  • The Rotary Club of Strathmore in Melbourne, Australia has installed 2 “Little Libraries” in our local community They are very popular. Both built by our local “men’s shed”, a local group looking after men’s welfare.
  • Rotary Club of Boronia has placed and supports 8 Little libraries in the Knox Council area. All are decorated by local Primary schools and registered with the Street Library Association of Australia.
  • We have one in Ettalong Beach NSW, sponsored by Rotary Brisbane Water. Great initiative. Our community loves it!

FOOTNOTE: EDITOR’S DISCRETION

As you all know by now my vocation is straw bale building.  There is a company in Latvia and Denmark called EcoCocon.  In December 2002 we had an International Straw Bale Building Conference here in Ganmain and at the CSU in Wagga.

Lars Keller from Denmark was a delegate and we showed Lars our first prototype straw panel.  We made these by using a 4’6″ Stihl chain saw cutting a 8’x4’x4′ jumbo bale into 250mm slices.  Over the years Lars and I communicated for a long time working on the panel system.

Lars is now the CEO of EcoCocon in Denmark and they have started building the world’s largest straw bale panel building in the Netherlands:

  • 40,900 m² of straw wall panels supplied by EcoCocon – {OR 80,000 small square bales}.
  • 155,000 m² of total building area
  • Designed for BREEAM Outstanding certification.  Equivalent to some Aussie building standards.
  • Integrated with 30,000 m² of solar panels and wetlands, forests, rooftop gardens
  • Targeting biodiversity gains of at least +10%

and it is a Timber Logistics Centre.

NB: Dick can fine me: but we are so proud as to have had an input in EcoCocon 23 years ago now.

CRC Bulletin July 14th. 2025

COOLAMON ROTARY CLUB MEETING July 14th 2025

President Mary Potts welcomed us all to the meeting and our guests were introduced and included our guest speaker Caleb Smith from the Salvation Army in Temora.  Lexi introduced Ivan and Helen and Michael Boland, Michael is Ivan’s cousin.  There were 18 members present tonight.

The meeting started with a report by our secretary Paul on the immediate board meeting and these included:

  • Several nominations for prospective Friends of Rotary.
  • Approval for payments to RDU, trailer signage and name board.
  • CRC will sponsor a prize for the Up to Date Art Show.

Mary has some notes below which covered most items upcoming apart from reminding members:

  • Saturday 2nd August Shakespeare night at Coolamon Cheese more in Mary’s notes.
  • Rotaract Uranquinty Trivia Night.
  • Saturday 14th September Marrar Madness.  Bear said that we are only able to do the parking as we needed many more to do the gates etc.
  • Club Assembly Monday 4th August among many ideas is the invitation of corporate members.

After dinner our guest speaker was Caleb Smith from the Salvation Army in Temora.

Caleb started by saying that the Salvation Army and Rotary have many shared ideals of community service.

Caleb went on to outline some of the work that they do in Temora and district.   These included:

  • Volunteers who help in their Opportunity shop on Temora.

  • School Breakfasts in Temora every Wed, Thursday and Friday.  Here they provide breakfast for around 40 children.  Caleb said that they are great kids with no discrimination between the haves and the have nots.
  • The Salvos run a drop in programme for people in a tight spot usually they supply a meal.  Food helps people to improve their thinking.
  • They have a programme called Food in the Kitchens.  Here they teach children on how to plan their nutrition.  This gives these children some dignity and budgeting skills.
  • The Salvos help people to get to their medical appointments mostly in Temora.
  • Caleb concluded on describing the fun part which is a community family dinner.  This is held every month in Temora

Salvation Army Web Site

Several questions followed from our guests and members.  Mark Reardon gave a vote of thanks for Caleb and for the work that he does in Temora.

Caleb then drew the raffle which was won by our guest Michael Bolton.

A fines session then ensued with Sgt Dick at his very best again. Not many were spared well done Dick.

The meeting finished at 8.30 am with plenty of time for some good fellowship.

PRESIDENT MARY’S NOTES

President Mary’s Notes July 14th.

A few items for the Bulletin

A reminder for the night at Coolamon Cheese all profits to Rotary Club of Coolamon should be a fun night, hopefully our members can support this and bring some friends along.

Tickets $40 per head from Civic theatre booking office, this includes show , glass wine and small cheese platter.

The following have volunteered to help out on the night to help seat people commencing at 5 pm, hopefully they will also purchase a ticket and stay for the show, please wear name badges.

Lexi, Grahame, Leslie, Paul, Howard, Vicki and Mary.

Hopefully members can start thinking about our club assembly on 4th August. This will be a good Chance for everyone to put some ideas forward to keep our club going strong. We are a great and it can continue to be one. We can continue with the theme Unite for good

We have started a register of friends of Rotary for those that wish to help out with events but don’t want to commit to weekly meetings etc. these volunteers are very important to the club, so if anyone has any friends or contacts that would like to help out in this way let us know.

Another item to think about is the off the grid challenge , a fundraiser for ShelterBox. If we had enough support we could organise one for Coolamon when the weather is a little warmer, we may even get some Wagga clubs members to join in Garth joined in one last year in Boorowa (I think)

The Wagga Wagga Rotaract club are holding a trivia night in Uranquinty on 6 September. This is jungle themed and should be a fun night. Tickets available humanitix.

Mary.

ROTARY DOWN  UNDER WEBSITE

2.  MEMBERSHIP REFLECTION

Often among our selves we often say that we are not getting any younger and that we need more members.  As a club in D9705 previously D9700 we have performed so much better than the majority of clubs in D9705.  Easily proved when you look at the ratio of members to the population in our membership catchment area.  In this case it is the Coolamon Shire.

There was a time when we had dropped to 15 members of which 9 or 10 were active and attended weekly meetings.  Over the past years we have reached 29-30 members with 20-22 being active with only a few not so active.  When the vast majority of clubs are losing members and even clubs handing in their charters, why have we been able to increase our membership?

The answer is simple, several members have been responsible for this and what they have done is to ask a friend or neighbour to come to our club for a dinner meeting, usually with a good guest speaker.  I am sure that those who remember how they became interested, would agree that being asked to come along to one of our meetings, was the start of wanting to be part of our club.  The reasons they end up joining us would be varied but overall our club is a happy place to be and prospective members leave with a good feeling.

We are the exception within Western countries like Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain and Ireland, to a certain extent Canada and the USA.  In these parts of the world membership is declining.  The % of female to male members is on the rise but ever so slowly now around 26%.   The average age of members is also rising which is the biggest problem that we face in the near future.

None of us have the answers but there are countries or continents that are increasing their membership and chartering new clubs.  One such part of the world is East Africa and D9212 which encompasses Kenya in the main with Ethiopia, Eritrea and South Sudan, all with clubs in D9212.  In fact D9212 had to cut the district into two new districts as they had too many clubs and too many members back in 2015.  They look like having to divide the district again in the near future.  Rotary in Africa has been going since the Rotary Club of Johannesburg was chartered in 1921, now 104 years ago.  Rotary started in Australia as well in 1921, in Melbourne and then in Sydney.

So why the difference?

There are many reasons as so much changed in Africa since 1921 with countries achieving independence from colonial rule followed by a population explosion.  An example is my home Kenya which has grown from 7 million in 1963 at Kenya’s Independence, to over 55 million today.  During this time the perception of being a Rotarian in Kenya, has changed from being an old white man’s organisation, to a young person’s organisation, with a mean age of 40-45 and with a 50-50 female to male ratio.

They still conduct local community service and they travel to International conventions and hold amazing district conferences.  In the main Rotary is seen in Africa as being an organisation that is an important part of their C.V. and useful  for business.  Here are some photos from the recent change over of the RC Of Nairobi, the oldest in Kenya, chartered in 1930.  Vibrant and colourful and young.

RC Nairobi Change Over Dinner Video

Below is a photo from 1974 of the RC of Nairobi 11 years after Kenya’s independence.  Dr. Greg Gregory a member in the photo, was the doctor who brought me into the world on 1944.  How times have changed in such a few years.

Also in the photo is our family lawyer, the Nairobi Club president in 1974, Stewart Thompson.  How times have changed in such a short while.  I don’t know the answers but keep asking friends and neighbours to have dinner with us.

COOLAMON ROTARY CLUB MEETING July 7th. 2025

President Mary Potts welcomed us all to the 1st CRC meeting for 2025-2026.   Twenty members attended with President Mary Potts at the helm.  We all wish Mary and her team a year of fun, fellowship and service.

Mary commenced the meeting with a one minute of silence in memory of Mark Reardon’s mother, PDG David Kennedy and Yvonne Braid OAM.

Mary advised us that the Public Image Director will be held by both Grahame Miles and Garth Perkin, a good idea.  Mary’s first board meeting is on Monday next the 14th July.

Next Monday Caleb Smith from the Salvation Army will be our guest speaker.

Mary reminded all members that on Saturday August 2nd we are the beneficiary of the Shakespeare Night at the Coolamon Cheese Factory.  Mary called for 3-4 volunteers to welcome guests and hand out a cheese platter and a glass of wine.  Volunteers will be needed to be at the Cheese Factory from 5.00pm.  The event starts at 6.00pm and is $40 per person.

The CWA has asked for a letter of support for their hall.

The first club assembly will be on Monday 4th August.

S@A Dick Jennings was in fine form and at the rate he collected fines last night will lead to a bumper year in the fines box.

The raffle was won by Paul and a second prize to Mary.

The meeting closed at 8.30 which left plenty of time for some good fellowship.

Those of you who want to keep up to date with matters Rotary I can recommend the new or refreshed D9705 web site, which can be found on the link below.  Even if you have not registered onto D9705 you can still read the front page and other areas of interest.  DG Robert Shore has obviously put a lot of time into the D9705 web site for 2025-2026.

VALE PDG DAVID KENNEDY

On Friday, a very good friend, PDG David Kennedy as you may know passed away, after his long battle with kidney problems.
I will always remember David as a happy person, despite his health issues.
PDG Dave was a good man and always had something positive to say and he was never a negative person.  I especially appreciated his sage advice when we worked together on the D9700 Board.
We will miss him and his humour, above all the work that he did for Rotary in D9700 and for his club Blayney.
RIP PDG David.

COOLAMON ROTARY CLUB MEETING June 23rd. 2025

President Adrian welcomed 23 members to our meeting last night and we met at the Coolamon Hotel (Bottom Pub) for a social night out to celebrate another great year in Rotary.  We had 9 guests which included:  Marilyn Jennings, Maureen Hulsman, Jan Nulty, Trish Truscott, Lorraine Hamilton, Susan Glassford, Bernadette Milne, Mark Hayes from Sydney and Holbrook and the Big Bloke known as Ralph.

Such a good night at the bottom pub was had by all.  The meals were excellent and of good value.  Service was first class  and the staff are a very happy team.  The only downside was the poor acoustics in the dining room not a good place to hold a meeting but a lovely place to have an excellent meal with good friends in Rotary.

Here are some photos from last night:

You can read Mark’s beliefs here:

Mark Reardon Q&A 2

Thank you Mark for you thoughts and insights into the future of power generation. Interestingly this article appeared on social media today and makes one think that we do not have all the answers yet or will we ever? The debate continues!

Germany’s energy revolution is in full swing. In 2024, renewable sources powered an impressive 62.7% of the country’s electricity grid—up from just 17% in 2010. This sharp climb wasn’t just about wind turbines and solar farms—it was powered by households, too.
💡 Over 435,000 new balcony solar units were installed last year alone, making energy generation more decentralized and citizen-led than ever before. Meanwhile, wind power produced 136.4 TWh, outpacing entire national grids like Norway’s, and solar energy delivered 72.2 TWh, more than Argentina’s annual electricity use.
Even more historic: 2024 was Germany’s first full year without nuclear power since 1962—and reliance on coal continues to shrink. CO₂ emissions dropped 3.4% year-over-year.
📅 With a goal of hitting 80% renewable electricity by 2030, Germany is turning policy into impact—and setting the pace for Europe’s clean energy future.

Adrian thanked mark for his answers to the questions put to him.

The raffle was won by Albert a voucher for Foodworks.

Albert then conducted a brief fines session as our S@A and in particular Dick had 5 fines levelled at him as did Grahame.  all in all another excellent night of learning some controversy and above all good fellowship.

The meeting closed at 8.40pm.

NB. Next Monday we are having the meeting at the Coolamon Hotel (Bottom Pub) 6.30 for 7.00pm please get your numbers in to Ian by Friday for catering purposes, thanks.

ROTARY NEWS

1.  NEW ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT

Francesco Arezzo, partner of the Rotary Club of Ragusa (Italy), has been selected by the RI Board to serve as Rotary International President 2025-2026.

Arezzo will assume the presidency on July 1st.

The RI Board held an extraordinary meeting following the unexpected resignation of RI President-elect Mário César Martins de Camargo received on June 8. Based on the RI regulations and code of rules, the Directorate selected the new President-elect from a group of candidates that had been considered by the Rotary International Presidential Proposal Committee in August 2023.

The 2025-2026 Presidential Message, announced in February at the Rotary International Assembly 2025, will continue to be United for Good, which urges Rotary partners to be a force of unity in a world increasingly divided by politics, geography and ideology.

2.  ROTARY ANNUAL PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

A moment in time: Rotary magazine’s 2025 Photo Awards

Sparks fly as Rotary members focus their cameras and freeze-frame the wonders of the world

Blaze of glory: In the little town of Rollag, a few miles southeast of Fargo, North Dakota, folks gather every Labor Day weekend for the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion. At the nocturnal “spark show,” sawdust and wood chips are fed into the firebox of an antique steam-powered tractor, and the fiery explosion that follows etches cascades of gold into the night sky.

COOLAMON ROTARY CLUB MEETING June 2nd 2025

President Adrian welcomed 20 members to our meeting last night and gave a warm welcome to our guests who were:

Guest Speaker Dr. Saba Nabi with her husband and young son, Maryanne and Leo de Kroo, Maureen Hulsman, Marilyn Jennings, Sharon Miles, Erica Hooper and Michael Trinidad a neighbour of the Hulsmans.

In all another great role up of members and guests.  After dinner Adrian introduced our guest speaker Dr. Nabi.

Adrian said that migrants have helped build Australia. Think 65% of the snowy mountains scheme workers between 1949 and 1974. Recently Coolamon has been blessed to have migrant doctors, nurses, aged care workers, mechanical engineers, welders and spray painters from various countries. We wouldn’t be able to function without them.

Coolamon Rotary Club is celebrating their contribution to our society  tonight, with our award winning guest speaker Dr Saba Nabi OAM. Saba is a Board member of Multicultural NSW and a member of the Rotary club of Wagga Wagga.

Dr Nabi arrived in Australia from India almost 10 years ago as a PhD student in Biomedical Sciences at Charles Sturt University. Shortly after arriving she began volunteering at the university to ensure international students could integrate into tertiary and community life. Dr Nabi was the first international student elected to the University Council and later won the State Award.

You can read a copy of here of Dr. Saba Nabi OAM Bio and it reads like a wonderful example of how hard work and belief in your dreams to come from India to Wagga Wagga, can come true. Through her research, Dr Nabi identified a gap in the knowledge about mammography and cancer pre-screening tests of women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds Through this research Dr Nabi was able to engage with local refugee and diverse communities, advocating for mammography and breast screening for women in the Riverina.

Dr Nabi community work includes positions as an AFL Multicultural Ambassador, a member of the Federation for Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia, Publicity Officer for the Country Women’s Association of NSW and a board member of the Riverina Cancer Care Council.

Saba gave a wonderful talk outlining her journey to Wagga Wagga.  It was very evident that her love of the city came through in her talk.  Saba has also joined the Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga.

There was so much to take in and to be inspired by Saba and her family.  Saba spoke on the many awards that she has been given over her 10 years in Wagga Wagga.

One award that got my attention was being awarded the OAM Order of Australia Medal in 2023.

“Saba Nabi has the kind of resume that would give even the most accomplished Australians an inferiority complex.

An AFL multicultural ambassador, member of the Federation for Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia, publicity officer for the Country Women’s Association of NSW, and a board member of the Riverina Cancer Care Council; now she can add Order of Australia Medal to the list.

The King’s Birthday Honour is for her service to community health, education and multicultural affairs.”

FULL STORY HERE.

Alex gave Saba a hearty vote of thanks on behalf of all present.  Saba then went on to draw her own ticket in the raffle with other winners being Daryl and Mary.

We then followed up with a little bit of business:

  • Mary advised us that the MHERV in Coolamon on Friday and Ganmain on Saturday this week.  A list of volunteers will be circulated ASAP.
  • The Red Shield Appeal is set for Sunday 15th June again details to follow.

Thanks to Grahame for helping with teh photos.

Thank you Adrian for organising Dr. Saba Nabi as our guest speaker tonight, an excellent choice.

The meeting closed at 8.45pm.
