ROTARY INTERNATIONAL THEME FOR 2026-2027

Monday August 10th 2026

President Leslie Weston welcomed 20 of our members to the meeting and one visiting Rotarian Garth Perkin of course.

After the dinner we had some general business including a report on the preceding board meeting.

Secretary Henk gave the following report on the board meeting:

Membership fees are due for the current 6 months of $80.00.
Lexis has been contacted by the RC of Canberra Sunset club for sponsoring a Coolamon girl to attend the upcoming RYPEN. We will sponsor her at around $1,200.00. RYPEN Website.
N.B. RYPEN has been postponed to November – date to be advised. This decision wasn’t an easy decision to make though as applications were low, the decision to move the camp to November was made. The committee hopes you all understand and your clubs are able to support the RYPEN Camp in November.
The Board approved a donation of $150.00 to the Coolamon Central School for awards to high achievers in sport from the school.
On Monday June 24th former CRC Rotarian Julie Clarke will be talking on Blaze Aid.
PP Ray Foley’s funeral is being held today Tuesday 11th. Dick and Henk delivered a magnolia plant to Maria Foley on behalf of our members. Henk said that Maria was being comforted by family and friends.
Mary will have order forms next Monday for Rotary themed clothing.
The Board will be inviting the owners of the garden viewing gardens to a dinner at the club.
On Monday August 31st we are having a social evening at Coolamon Cheese. Please send your acceptance to Mary. We will be having carbonara pasta dishes. Coolamon Cheese is fully licensed.

Other Business:

Dick said that we have not been invited by the Lions to help with the Ganmain Show car parking on Saturday the 22nd August.
Annie gave a report on the Netball catering in Wagga which is below in the bulletin.
Thursday September 10th we will be running the raffle in the Coolamon Hotel. Details to follow.
Albert advised members that there will be a meeting of the garden viewing committee on Monday 17th August next week at 5.30pm at the Sports Club.
Leslie brought up the subject of the working with children check that we are supposed to have as Rotarians. There was a lot of discussion and the result was to consult a lawyer. In the mean time we should all get our WWCC#s up to date and if we don’t have one we should get one costs nothing and is easy to do online.

We then held the raffle which was won by Bruce Hamilton the 5 Chinese dinners were won by Annie, Albert, Michael, Don and Barry.

Michael handed out some delicious sweets that he had baked.

The meeting closed at 8.50pm followed by some good fellowship.

VALE PP RAY FOLEY

Last week our friend Ray Foley and a Past President of Coolamon Rotary Club passed away.

Ray was a very active member of our club and was always one of the first to volunteer for any events. One of Ray’s biggest contributions to our club was the renovation of our caravan that we obtained from the DMR. Ray was helped by Henk Hulsman and Mark Reardon in those days. Ray and his helpers did a wonderful job on making the van usable at that time.

Ray began life in Narrandera and moved to Wagga and started a metal fabrication trade. At some stage Ray joined his father’s business of mobile sheep dipping. Eventually Ray took over his father’s business and worked in the Coolamon area in the main.

The vocation that Ray trained for then enabled Ray to start a metal fabrication business in Coolamon. From here Ray was employed by the Junee Correctional Centre as an adult education officer in metal fabrication.

Ray and Maria’s son Robert was an overseas Rotary exchange student. Robert went to New Zealand for his exchange year.

All of our members extend our sincere and heartfelt condolences to his wife and partner Maria, Robert and Michele, and all of his family.

OUT AND ABOUT WAGGA WAGGA NETBALL

TUESDAY AUGUST 4th.

On Tuesday 7 club members catered for the Riverina High Schools Netball cup held at the Equex Centre, Wagga Wagga. The day was successful despite the chilly conditions with 31 teams (300 participants) from throughout the Riverina.

Thank you to those club members who helped on the day. We still have two more days of catering on September to 7 and 9 when the number of participants will be double on each of those days. So we will have to double up on supplies and helpers.

ROTARY NEWS and ITEMS OF INTEREST

1 . A TRUE DEFINITION OF A HERO.

End Polio Heroes are not just the Rotarians but it is our Honour to support the Polio Workers who work so hard in the countries needing our support with fundraising for the Rotary Foundation Polio Fund.

2. UNIQUE AUSTRLAIN ROTARY CLUB

The Rotary Club of Southeast Queensland Wildlife Rescue Inc. in District 9640 has been chartered for less than a year and what a roller coaster ride it has been on. Firstly, that there have been a lot of disappointments.

In regard to rescuing, caring and hopefully releasing animals back into the wild, there are more bad outcomes than good. A lot of the work involves rescuing animals from vehicle strikes.

But let’s concentrate on the positives!

The club has released a diverse range of animals back into the wild including wallabies, gliders, possums, lorikeets and many other birds.

3. EXPERIENCE GLOBAL CONNECTION IN BARCELONA

BARCELONA RI CONVENTION 26-30 June 2027

The Rotary International Convention is coming to Barcelona in June, and members who’ve visited the city along the sea or who live there can hardly contain their excitement.

They want other Rotary members (yes, you!) to experience the energy, culture, and renowned landmarks of the city they love. Speaking of landmarks, the timing of the 26-30 June convention is perfect for visiting Barcelona’s signature attraction, the Sagrada Família basilica. Under construction for more than 140 years, the Antoni Gaudí masterpiece reached a milestone after workers finished its final, tallest tower earlier this year.

Editor’s Note: I have now attended 7 RI Conventions and can highly recommend attending at least one in your Rotary life. Barcelona looks very inviting indeed.
