President Leslie Weston welcomed 15 of our members to Coolamon Cheese for our social meeting and 9 guests including: Maria Foley, Sally Farmer, Wendy Lindner, Sharon Reardon, Marilyn Jennings, Susan Glassford, Lorraine Hamilton, Dianne Suidgeest and Tim Dubois (Mark Dubois’s brother from Sydney).

It was so good to welcome Maria Foley to the meeting.

We briefly discussed ways to help the current Rotary appeals for help in Nepal and Tibet. Some ideas follow the minutes from the meeting last night.

Coolamon Cheese and our hosts Sarah Boyle and her mother Dianne and sister Lizzy made us very welcome. They served us two varieties of pasta sauce and both were very filling and excellent.

“A huge thank you to Coolamon Rotary for spending their social night with us! We cooked up some pasta and half the proceeds (plus a few cheeky little raffles) will be going towards helping the disaster in Nepal.

Keep an eye out for our upcoming secret event in October. The last one sold out very quickly.

Mary Potts asked for volunteers for the Wagga netball days and a roster was passed around and so far we have:

Monday 7th September: BBQ; Adrian, Alex, and Barry in the canteen Vicki and Mary.

Wednesday 9th September: Alex, Leslie, Grahame, Barry, Dick, happy, Vicki and albert.

Mary Potts sent us this report on last night’s social gathering.

We had a good night last night, we have $632 from last night to be used as a donation for Nepal. We had donations of $200 and $87 from the auction items thanks to Coolamon cheese for the cheese box and Paul and Leslie for the eggs. Thank you Dick Jennings for the auctioneering!

I think everyone had a great night and Coolamon cheese did a great night in hosting us Sarah offered to do the meal for nothing. We thought that was a bit too generous so agreed on $15 per head.

We also need a few more helpers for selling raffle tickets on Thursday night 10th September if we could have two more people volunteer from about 5.45 pm until 7.30 pm and if other Rotary members could come along to the pub for support.

We currently have Mark and Albert down for selling these raffle tickets

For the Netball next week if we could have a couple of more helpers for Monday the seventh that would be great

The raffle was won by Sharon Reardon and Dick Jennings conducted a spirited auction for the Coolamon Cheese gift box and for some wonderful dark paddock brown eggs. The eggs were donated by Leslie and Paul Weston.

The night concluded at 8.45 pm and we were reluctant to go home!!

ROTARY RESPONDS TO THE NEPAL TIBET FLOOD DISASTER

Rotarians around the world are working on ways to support the appeals for help following this tragic loss of life and properties in Nepal and Tibet.

3. ShelterBox Appeal for Nepal

Whole communities have been swept away by flash floods in northern Nepal. ShelterBox is responding.

Families have lost their homes, while roads, bridges and other vital infrastructure have been badly damaged.

Our team is travelling to Nepal to find out what people need and how we can help.

Donate now to help provide emergency shelter and essential aid for families who have lost everything.

We can as Coolamon Rotarians set up a ShelterBox display say at Foodworks (with permission of course) and call for donations probably a raffle as well. We have a complete ShelterBox and we have done this before in Coolamon and Ganmain.

Thursday September 10th – we will be running the raffle in the Coolamon Hotel from about 5.45 pm until 7.30 pm and if other Rotary members could come along to the pub for support. We need two more volunteers so far we have Mark and Albert.

The Science Behind Nepal’s August 26 Disaster

A Wall of Water With No Storm Behind It

On the morning of August 26, 2026, something strange happened in the Himalaya. A wall of water, mud, and rock tore down the Trishuli and Bhote Koshi river valleys in Nepal, swallowing villages, roads, and bridges. Hundreds died. Thousands went missing. But there was no storm. No cloudburst. No monsoon downpour to blame. The sky was calm. The disaster began somewhere else entirely: high on a mountain called Langtang Lirung, at an elevation where no person lives and no road exists.

To understand why this happened, and whether it will happen again, the science must be walked through slowly, one idea at a time. What follows is not a comfortable story:

2. VALE DOLLY PARTON

Before she was “the Book Lady” to millions of children, believed every child deserved the chance to fall in love with reading.

Through, she collaborated with Rotary to expand access to books and support young readers, one story at a time. We were lucky enough to have her grace the Rotary stage in 2010.

Dolly, thank you for reminding us that literacy opens doors. Your generosity and optimism will inspire generations to come.
