Coolamon Rotary Bulletin for December 4th 2023

Coolamon Rotary Bulletin for Week of 4/12/2023

Meeting of Monday 4th December

President John Bond welcomed  20 members and 2 guests, Marilyn Jennings and Michael Suidgeest.  We also welcomed back PP Albert Suidgeest from his trip to Sri Lanka.  Albert was resplendent in a Sri Lankan Lungi Sarong and matching orange shirt.  Welcome back Albert!

In memory of PP Neil Munro we held a silent reflection on his life, serving our community.

The meeting opened with Paul Weston giving us details of a Rotary project run by the Rotary Club of Warner’s Bay involving free health checks in their travelling caravan.  The full time nurse that goes with the van will give both men and women checks for diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure.  This takes around 10 minutes per person.  The van will be  in our area in May 2024 and they need a local Rotary club to provide accommodation for the nurse and her driver and a site with power for the van. They are coming to Coolamon via Gundagai and Cootamundra and will be in Coolamon on May 11th 2024.

Scott Mudd spoke about a wonderful prospect for the upcoming RYLA course to be held in Murrumbateman from the 6th to the 12th of January 2024.  Scott has proposed that we support Corey Higgins to attend RYLA.  Scott spoke highly of Corey and Scott requested that we support Corey in next year’s RYLA course.  The board approved the sponsorship for Corey following the meeting.

Henk Hulsman gave out the details for Neil Munro’s funeral and said that he had sent flowers to Clare on behalf of our members.

Henk also advised the members that the Christmas party will be held at John Bond’s home from 6.30 pm on Saturday the 16th of December.  The cost will be around $25.00 per head (but could be less than that).  A list of those wanting to attend our annual Christmas party was sent around for members to sign up.

AG Garth Perkin spoke about international service and a brief summary of his recent trip to Cambodia.  Garth encouraged us all to consider volunteering overseas as part of being a member of Rotary.  Garth emphasised how fulfilling this type of volunteering is, and how much impact we can have on developing countries such as Cambodia.

Grahame Miles suggested that we should hold our first meeting for 2024 on Monday January 22nd.  After some discussion it was put to the board for a decision. The board met after the meeting and voted in favour of the motion.  The board will meet on that day at 5.15 pm as per normal.

Albert Suidgeest then gave a brief description of his visit to Sri Lanka. Albert had a wonderful time and even got to see wild elephants and a very rare leopard.

S@A Garth conducted a brief fine session and the raffle was won Michael Suidgeest.

RIP NEIL MUNRO

JUST FOR LAUGHS

A group of 40 year old girlfriends discussed where they should meet for dinner. Finally, it was agreed that they should meet at the ocean view restaurant because the waiters there had tight pants and nice buns.

10 years later, at 50 years of age, the group once again discussed where they should meet for dinner. Finally it was agreed that they should meet at the ocean view restaurant because the food there was very good and the wine selection was good also.

10 years later at 60 years of age, the group once again discussed where they should meet for dinner. Finally it was agreed that they should meet at the ocean view restaurant because they could eat there in peace and quiet and the restaurant had a beautiful view of the ocean.

10 years later, at 70 years of age ,the group once again discussed where they should meet for dinner. Finally it was agreed that they should meet at the ocean view restaurant because the restaurant was wheelchair accessible and they even had an elevator.

10 years later, at 80 years of age, the group once again discussed where they should meet for dinner. Finally it was agreed that they should meet at the ocean view restaurant because they had never been there before.

ROTARY DISEASE PREVENTION & TREATMENT IN ACTION

COOLAMON HOUSE HOUT BAY SOUTH AFRICA

The Trustees of The Rotary Foundation have identified seven areas of focus for the new grant structure. These areas reflect critical humanitarian issues and needs that Rotarians are addressing worldwide. They will align Rotary with other international development efforts and will strategically further the Foundation’s mission.

Coolamon Rotary Club is very active in Disease Prevention and Treatment, one of Rotary’s 7 areas of focus.  We have also through Rotarians For Fighting AIDS been working on Maternal & Child Care through Coolamon House, which is another area of focus.

Coolamon House is now a medical care centre for the 40,000 residents of Imizamo Yethu; which is an informal settlement in Hout Bay itself.  Coolamon House provides perinatal HIV medicine to those women who are HIV+. They also provide anti retroviral therapy including drugs.  This prevents in most cases the transmission of the HIV virus to the unborn child.  Coolamon House also provides TB testing.  Click on the images below for a larger version.

CRC worked with the Rotary Club of Hout Bay from 2005 until the present day.  We raised the funds through climbing the three highest mountains in Africa.  Together with a matching grant from our Foundation we donated around $100,000 to the Hout Bay Rotary Club.  Their members led by PP Butch Liebenberg and PP Patrick McLaughlin did the buildings and the renovation of the old one, which was totally inadequate to service 40,000.

Meeting of Monday 27th November 2023

President John Bond welcomed 18 members and two guests: Michael Suidgeest and Vicky Langtry.

Tonight was a club assembly, which began after some general business, which included:

  • Paul Weston presented the correspondence for the week which included two invitations to school presentation days for Matong Primary and Coolamon Central.  Both events are on the same day being December 12th.  Scott Mudd will go to Matong and Alexis and John Bond will attend CCS.
  • John Bond is getting the Christmas party organised and Liam Armstrong is cooking a spit.  Members will be asked to bring a plate of salads, potato bake or a dessert (stay tuned as to who needs to bring what).  Cost will be $25 per head.

CLUB Assembly

1. New Year’s Eve Catering

The discussion was led by PE Adrian Lindner and it was an open and fair interaction between members present.  The first question was how many volunteers we will need, and it looks like 10 Rotarians will be able to volunteer.

The discussion then focused on how many we need to do the catering and sell raffle tickets.  The answer seemed to be around 18.  As Coolamon Lions have offered to work with us, our guest Vicki called Lions and returned with the good news that they would help with the cooking of the sausages for the children.  This will allow some Rotarians to focus on selling raffle tickets.

Food will be cooked on the outdoor BBQ and served from the food van.

Members were asked to look at getting donations of goods suitable for a wheel barrow for the prizes of the raffle.

So NYE as far as our club goes will be the same as last year.

Those member who are unable to attend due to prior commitments, in the main abstained from the vote, which was carried.

2. CRCTB 2024 Edition

The CRC Telephone Book committee for 2024 called for this assembly to discuss the next stage of this important project for our club and community.  Following the board’s decision to go ahead with the printing of the 2024 edition of our telephone book we now need to get all our members involved.

What next?

  1.  Members are being asked to go through the current Telstra book to get names of locals who are listed in the Telstra book but not in our 2024 book.  It is suggested that we all share this by doing a search of the current Telstra book.
  2.  Chair of the CRCTB committee Henk Hulsman handed out a form for members to list the businesses that they support.  Once these forms have been returned the committee will look for volunteers to canvass these businesses.  Already Brian “Bear” Pattison has offered to look after Marrar, Junee and Temora.  This is a great start and very welcome, thanks Bear!
  3.  The schedule of advertising rates will be decided on by the committee and Henk has prepared a schedule for our consideration.
  4.  Those advertisers that advertise in the Coolamon Community Chronicle will be offered a discounted rate to advertise in the CRCTB 2024.  This could be our last telephone book which means that these books will be around in homes all over the Shire for years to come.

The meeting closed with a fines session by stand in S@A Ian Jennings and the two raffle prizes were won by JJG and Anne.

Rotary Action Group for Family Health & AIDS Prevention

One of the biggest programmes for Rotary other than Polio is HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention.  This RAG (Rotary Action Group) was started by Rotarian Marion Bunch, Marion who is a member of the Rotary Club of Dunwoody, Atlanta, Georgia.  In 1998 Marion Bunch’s son Jerry Schutz loses his fight against AIDS.

After dealing with her grief, Marion decides it is time to act and create lasting change. She asks her fellow Rotary club members to join her in the fight against AIDS… and they said yes. An AIDS awareness program between Rotary clubs in Georgia and AID Atlanta was created and has reached more than 500,000 middle and high school students in Georgia.  So began RFFA or Rotarians For Fighting AIDS.

RFFA History

In 2005 John G met Marion Bunch at the Chicago Convention and joined her action group. In 2007 Coolamon RC JJG led a team of climbers to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for HIV/AIDS projects and the School of St Jude’s.  So began the CRC Road MAPS to Africa projects.

In 2009 JJG became a director of RFFA under Marion Bunch’s leadership.  RFFA has now become RFHA or Rotarians for Family Health and AIDS.

SHARING

The old man placed an order for one hamburger, French fries, and a drink. He unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully cut in half, placing one half in front of his wife.

He then carefully counted out the French fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife. He took a sip of the drink, his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them.

As he began to eat his few bites of hamburger, the people around them were looking over and whispering. Obviously they were thinking, ‘That poor old couple-all they can afford is one meal for the two of them.’

As the man began to eat his fries a young man came to the table and politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple. The old man said, they were just fine-they were used to sharing everything. People closer to the table noticed the little old lady hadn’t eaten a bite. She sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink.

Again, the young man came over and begged them to let him buy another meal for them. This time the old woman said,

“No, thank you, we are used to sharing everything.”

Finally, as the old man finished and was wiping his face neatly with the napkin, the young man again came over to the little old lady who had yet to eat a single bite of food and asked,

“What is it you are waiting for?”

She answered, “My turn for the Teeth.”

Coolamon Rotary Bulletin for November 13th 2023

Coolamon Rotary Bulletin for Week of 19/11/2023

Meeting of Monday 13th November

President John Bond welcomed 18 members, 4 visiting Rotarians from Wollundry RC and 2 guests.

Wollundry were represented by President Darren Wallace, Phil McIntosh, David Byfield and David Benn.  Our guests were Terry Kiss and Albert’s brother Michael Suidgeest.

We toasted the Chopperoos world champion Aussie axe men who last week defeated the USA, Canada and New Zealand in 4 disciplines.

After dinner Phil McIntosh gave a report on the 2023 October Gears & Beers event held over the October long weekend.  Phil and the committee were concerned that seeing this event was held, not long after Covid 19 came under control, that it would not be a success.

Phil said that it was one of the best Gears & Beers events and exceptional and passed all expectations.  There were some 2,600 entrants with a great day which brought out the Mums & Dads and their children.  This year the emphasis was to give the participants a great time.

Phil said that the 2022 event through the canola at Adrian Lindner’s property sold the event for 2023.  The ride through the wheat crop this year will sell the 2024 event.  There was also a lot of social media posts during and following the 2023 G&B and here the participants told the story.

Phil went on to thank our club members who volunteered their time for the Dirty 130 and the 115 event.  Phil emphasised that without our participation it would not be feasible to run  the G&B.  2024 will be the 10th anniversary of Gears & Beers and again Phil thanked our club and said that Wollundry is in awe of our efforts.

Wollundry President Darren Wallace then presented a cheque for $8,000 to our President John Bond, Adrian Lindner and Albert Suidgeest.  Albert did a power of work in organising our support and our volunteers.  Thank you Albert, Adrian and all the volunteers.

Other Business:

  • Melbourne Cup Sweep winners:

$5 Sweep 1st Lexi, 2nd Mary, 3rd Ted and last Howard

$2 Sweep 1st John Nulty, 2nd Howard, 3rd John G, last Brian Bear Pattison.

  • Mary reported on the recent cycle event near Wagga
  • Anne on the Wagga Cycle Club Event.  CRC catered for lunch and dinner for cycling event at Pomegolarna Reserve Wagga Wagga.  We made a net profit of around $800 and the volunteers were: Alex, Brian, Lexi, Mary, Marilyn, Ted, John Bond, Garth, Gary and Anne. Photos below by Mary Potts thanks.
  • Henk Hulsman reported on the CRCTB 2024 book and advised the members that we stand to make a profit of an estimated $45,000.  The CRCTB 2024 committee has recommended to the CRC Board that we should go ahead with the compilation of the 2024 CRCTB.
  • The raffle was won by David Byfield 1st prize, John Bond 2nd and Grahame 3rd.
  • S@A Dick Jennings conducted another epic of a fines session.  Dick and corporal Garth impressed the visiting Rotarians that they asked them to attend a Wollundry meeting!!!
  • Dick then suggested that the evening should finish with a recital by David the “Rotary Bard” Benn.  David was in fine form and gave us two great renditions the first was Mulga Jim and the other was the one handed poker machine.

  • John Bond reported on the state of the club catering van and said that they are decreasing the size of the gas bottles to 9kg bottles.  That we are looking at putting on a sliding tray so that we can cook outside.  The air conditioning is also being looked into.
  • Adrian reminded members that our AGM will be upcoming in 2 weeks time on Monday November 20th.  PE Adrian is still looking for a President Elect Nominee to follow him.  Naturally all members are entitled to nominate for this position and other positions on the Board.
  • Adrian is recommending to the Board that we donate $600 to the Young Rotary Club for the driver simulator course to be held at the Coolamon Central School with Frank Lincoln from Young Rotary.

  • John Bond asked if it was OK for Sally Farmer to use the club printer to do some printing for the annual English literature booklet in colour.  John will ask Sally how many pages in total will be needed to be printed.
  • Ian reported on the Tackle The Track event held last Saturday.  This event was organised and supported by the Coolamon Shire Council.  All in all Ian said that it was a success despite the low turn out of participants.  Ian has received notification from the organisers Jacqui Collins and Laura Munro thanking our club for all the volunteers who acted as marshals.  Ian said the event deserves to be run again next year and with a grant this will be possible.
  • Christmas Party.  After much discussion it was decided to hold the annual gathering for the start of the holidays at John Bond’s home on Saturday 16th December.
  • CRCTB 2023 John Glassford handed out the corrected pages of the entries for the next telephone book.  This so that the entries can be checked against the original 2018 book.  So far so good and our thanks go to all who made the necessary phone calls.  There will be a meeting of the CRCTB 2023 committee on Monday 13th at 5.15 at the Sports Club.
  • JJG created two club sweeps for the Melbourne Cup one $5 and one $2.  Winners will be announced at the next meeting on the 13th.

There was no raffle tonight due to the Melbourne Cup sweeps.  S@A Dick Jennings was again in fine form.

Bernadette Milne, Jan Nulty, Sharon Miles, Susan Glassford, Lorraine Hamilton, Maureen Hulsman, Marilyn Jennings and Jann Breust.  Together with 15 members we had an excellent night of social interactions.

The food was very good with generous helpings.  The Ganmain Sports Club caterers opened up especially for our group.  There was no business conducted nor did we have a raffle or a fines session.  Just good fellowship and some interaction with the few locals from Ganmain who were there.

Thank you to Grahame Miles for organising the social night.

The Puzzler

Answer to the last puzzlers:

  • Riddle: If you remove the first and last letter of ‘five’, you’re left with ‘iv’ (four in Roman numerals). Thus, removing half of five (two of its four letters) yields four!
  • Brain teaser: First, Alice and Ben cross the river in 2 minutes, and Alice returns in 1 minute. Then Cindy and Don cross the river together in 8 minutes, and Ben returns in 2 minutes. Finally, Alice and Ben cross the river again in 2 minutes, for a total elapsed time of 15 minutes (2 + 1 + 8 + 2 + 2).

This month’s puzzlers:

  • Riddle: What English word retains the same pronunciation even after you take away four of its five letters?
  • Brain teaser: I do not have any special powers, but I can predict the score of any cricket game before it begins. How can I do this?

OUR ROTARY FOUNDATION

The Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world.

The Charity Navigator based in the USA has given The Rotary Foundation top billing of 4 stars now 14 years in a row.

“This charity’s score is 100%, earning it a Four-Star rating. If this organization aligns with your passions and values, you can give with confidence.

This overall score is calculated from multiple beacon scores, weighted as follows: 85% Accountability & Finance, 10% Leadership & Adaptability, 5% Culture & Community. Learn more about our criteria and methodology.”

Since it was founded more than 100 years ago, the Foundation has spent more than $4 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects.

With your help, we can make lives better in your community and around the world.

Our mission

The Rotary Foundation helps Rotary members to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace by improving health, providing quality education, improving the environment, and alleviating poverty.

What impact can one donation have?

  • For as little as 60 cents, a child can be protected from polio.
  • $50 can provide clean water to help fight waterborne illness.
  • $500 can launch an antibullying campaign and create a safe environment for children.

When we award a Paul Harris Fellow we invest in $1,000 to make this award and lately with the Bill Gates Foundation of $2:1 this accumulates to an  amount of $3,000 as long as we state the $1,000 is going to polio plus our flagship project.

Our club has been the beneficiary of two Global Grants for our projects in South Africa and Kenya.

Items of importance discussed included:

  • Paul Weston on the Christmas Shoe Box appeal and that we will be donating $300.00 to the Anglican Church. Paul also advised the members that as from next year Beyond Bank will not be accepting cheques.  Mary Potts said that this would not be a problem.
  • Paul also spoke about the Working With Children Check #s and that 50% of our members either do not have one or their WWC# has expired.  Paul said that if any one needed help to ask JJG.
  • Mary Potts spoke about a March Peace Walk 5-10ks.  More information forthcoming.
  • Henk Hulsman reported on the Country Makers Market held at Redgrave Park last Saturday. There were a few hiccups which was brought up at a special meeting following the weekly meeting.  There was a very low turn out of patrons and we had a few kilos of bacon and sausages left over.  These we bought by members present.  A profit of $268 was made.  Thanks go to Albert, Barry, Alex, Henk, Grahame, Bear, Bruce, Anne, Bondy and Ted for volunteering their time.
  • Henk advised the members that the Friday bowls at the Club will be based on individual entries and not as a business house as in the past. Entrants will be designated to a team on the night.
  • Grahame Miles has organised our 5th Monday in the month social day, to be held at the Ganmain Sports Club, on the 1st Wednesday of the month.  We need 20 members to attend with their partners or guests to make it worthwhile.  Contact Grahame Miles.
  • Albert Suidgeest had a request from Neil Munro to meet up with his fellow Rotarians.  The gathering will be at Neil and Clare’s home in Coolamon at 10.30 am Tuesday.  Clare will make the scones and anyone going please bring their own coffee or tea.
  • *Footnote Grahame reported that there were 20 visitors to Neil and Clare on Wednesday morning.  Neil was in good spirits and he said that he was honoured to have so many friends from his Rotary club, to come around for Clare’s scones and to say G ‘day. Thanks go to Albert for getting this organised and to all who went around to Neil’s home.
  • Albert said that the Thursday morning Coffee Club will be in the park in support of the McGrath Foundation and pink cup cakes will be sold to raise funds.  As usual 10.30 am.

CLUB ACTIVITY REPORT

The meeting was then addressed by AG Garth Perkin and PE Adrian Lindner who were delegates to the District 9705 Conference held in Queanbeyan last weekend.

    • Driver Training Simulator from Young RC.
    • Bunnings mentoring and training teenagers.
  • Adrian reported to the delegates on some of our club’s projects and events over the past year including the Coolamon Community Chronicle, Kindra Park, the pathway to Ganmain and tree planting.

The 2024 DISCON (District Conference), will be held in Mittagong.

The Other event over the past weekend was the Country Makers market in Redgrave Park as reported above and here are some photos taken by Grahame Miles.

SPECIAL MEETING ON THE CARAVAN

Following the ordinary meeting we had a quickly convened special meeting to discuss the club caravan.

This came about due to some failings on the event at Redgrave Park.  Members present gave their ideas and how we can avoid the same problems in the future.  This will include changing the old gas bottles for new 9kg standard gas bottles.  The main problem is the heat being generated in the caravan from the internal gas hotplate.

It was a hot day but not as hot as some New Year Eve’s in the main street of Coolamon.  Members were asked to come up with some solutions for the future; as it was decided to keep this valuable asset.

DISTRICT 9705 CONFERENCE PICTORIAL.

This is one comment that I have been able to find on the D9705 DISCON in Queanbeyan last weekend.  This from Debbie Harris from Tumbarumba RC.

“A huge day of listening and learning at the Rotary District 9705 conference today in Queanbeyan. Some heavy topics such as mental health, suicide, malaria, domestic and family violence and flood relief were interspersed with joyful youth programs.  Plus the many ways Rotary is working to make the world a better place. There’s a lot going on around the world that’s for sure! My absolute highlight of the day was Craig Foster talking about his life and how he came to be where he is today. ‘Courage against injustice’ was his theme and it was just what I needed to hear. It’s always good to catch up with Rotary friends from around the district too!”

CRC ROTARIAN GARY TRUSCOTT’S STORY

Tonight we had the pleasure of listening to Gary Truscott’s story. (Thanks to Henk for recording Gary’s talk).

Was born in the Jacaranda Hospital in Cronulla NSW, “The Shire”, on 13th February, 1957.

Gary’s mother was from Taree and his father was a fitter and turner with the railroad for 25 years. His father then purchased a couple of trucks and conducted a business in the transport industry. In 1982 he drove his truck to Brisbane and conducted his transport business there.

His father suggested that Gary should find employment with a government department, thereby being sure to have regular employment for the rest of his life.

Gary has a sister in Cairns and a brother in Brisbane.

In 1975 Gary joined the Department of Family & Community Services and enjoyed his work as an auditor, travelling the state for six years. He married his wife, Trish, and took a position in OH&S with the same department. Gary and Trish bought a home in The Shire and brought up their family, two daughters (Hayley and Lauren) and a son (Matt) in the south of Sydney.

Matt  resides in Sydney and employed in the technical side of instrumentation. Daughter Lauren lives in Melbourne. The other, Hayley, joined the police force and met and married Jake Ellis, who  was  also in the force and stationed in Coolamon for a couple of years.  In fact they enjoyed the area so much, they  built a home in Campbell’s Lane, Coolamon. They have three children, two boys and a girl.

Gary and Trish  visited a couple of times and decided Coolamon is a lovely area to live and as grandchildren reside here, they sold their home in Cronulla and bought a home in Dunrobin Street in Coolamon.

The meeting concluded with a fines session by stand in sergeant Ian Jennings and Ian even fined Marilyn!

There were several prizes in the weekly raffle: 1st prize was won by Grahame Miles and other prizes won by Adrian, JJG, Vicki, Do, Leslie and Henk.  Thanks to those who brought along eggs, limes and ANZAC biscuits for prizes.

WORLD POLIO DAY 2023 OCTOBER 24th

Polio outbreak in Ukraine closed – A success story for public health despite extreme challenges of war

Health workers take a wastewater sample at a sewage site near Uzhgorod, Ukraine on 28 February 2023. Wastewater sampling provides a population-wide surveillance system, allowing health workers to monitor large areas and detect the virus even in asymptomatic carriers. Circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) was detected in Ukraine in 2021. Since that time, WHO and partners have been assisting Ukraine to respond to the polio outbreak. Thanks to the concerted efforts of WHO, international partners, national authorities and local communities, no cases of polio have been detected in the country for over a year.

Related video: https://youtu.be/hqpxjOWBsyE

WHO/Europe has declared an outbreak of poliovirus in Ukraine, detected in October 2021, officially closed. The European Regional Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication endorsed the closure of the outbreak during its annual meeting on 8 September 2023. The country has achieved this milestone – stopping transmission of the virus that threatened the lives and futures of its children and preventing spread to other countries – in the face of the ongoing war.

The comprehensive outbreak response, initiated by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine in December 2021, faced multiple challenges since the end of February 2022, including massive population displacement, destruction of health-care infrastructure and disruption of logistical routes for medical product deliveries.

“Stopping the spread of poliovirus in the midst of a devastating war is a major achievement and a clear demonstration of the highest level of political commitment of the Government of Ukraine to the welfare of its population,” said Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe.

“In the face of unprecedented challenges, the necessary steps taken by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine to prevent the spread of poliovirus within and beyond the borders of Ukraine are immensely commendable.”

The decision to close the outbreak was based on:

  • the recommendations of a poliovirus outbreak response assessment (OBRA) conducted by Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) partners, including WHO, in May 2023;
  • additional documentation provided by Ukraine in support of the ongoing surveillance, immunization and communication efforts since May; and
  • a comprehensive review of poliovirus surveillance and vaccination performance in the countries hosting the majority of the Ukrainian refugee population.

The outbreak was first detected in a young child in Ukraine in October 2021, following the importation of a poliovirus that had emerged in Pakistan and was previously detected in Tajikistan in 2021. A second child became paralysed in December 2021, and an additional 19 close contacts tested positive without developing symptoms.

“The Ministry of Health of Ukraine declared importation of this poliovirus a local public health emergency, and acted swiftly since its detection in close coordination with the global public health community,” said Dr Viktor Liashko, Minister of Health of Ukraine.

Dr Liashko continued, “The outbreak is now closed, but our work to prevent polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases in Ukraine continues despite all obstacles. As long as polio remains a threat globally, Ukraine will remain vulnerable. The Ministry of Health is committed to strengthening vaccine-preventable disease surveillance and working to achieve and sustain high routine immunization coverage nationwide to protect every child.”

CRC ROTARIAN BARRY LANGTRY’S STORY

Tonight we had the pleasure of listening to Barry’s story.  Barry was well supported by his wife Vicki.  The family settled in the Coolamon area in 1908.  They were share farmers and together and on 400 acres 8 people were able to make a lot of money.  This set the families up with farms in the area.  Barry said that he was related to many people in the area with some 107 cousins on one side and 108 cousins on the other side.

Well known names like Crocker, Jennings, Lewis came up a few times in Barry’s story.  Barry’s father had 6 children.  Barry went to St Michaels school in Coolamon and then to Agricultural College and boarding school in Goulburn.  Barry met Dick Jennings when they went horse riding together and have been mates ever since those days.

Barry was a good rugger player but on returning to Coolamon had to learn Australian Rules where he played for 7 years then bought a farm and played for another 10 years.  Barry married Vicki in 1975 and enjoys working on the farm.  Barry’s son has now taken on the farm and Vicki and Barry have 10 grandchildren.

Barry became very emotional when he recounted how Bill Thompson had saved the farm and they kept going and pulled through.

Vicki and Barry have travelled to Amsterdam, Budapest and the Tiwi Islands.

President John thanked Barry and of course Vicki for their story.

S@A Dick Jennings was in fine form no crutches this week and no one was sparred.

Paul advised us that the winners of the monthly puzzlers were Scott and Mary.

The raffle was won by Adrian with a second prize to Ted.

Another busy and fun night concluded with some good fellowship and a quick board meeting.

Meeting of Monday 25th September 2023

President John Bond welcomed 20 members and one past member, in Bernadette Milne, (so good to see Bernie), to the meeting, another good roll up of members.  Maintaining this level of attendance every week is a great sign of the health of our club.

There was not a lot of business discussed tonight and some of the items included:

  • Telephone Directory – So far we only have 8 of the 18 x 4 pages of the 2018 entries returned from those members that took them home, of which 2 of the 8 have not been phoned as yet.  On Monday 9th meeting we will have an update of the returns to date.  It is important for future charity giving by our club that we get this all done in the next few weeks.
  • Albert advised the meeting that there was a possibility of one garden owner agreeing to have their garden available for next October’s Open Garden Day.  Albert encouraged all of us to come up with potential gardens as soon as possible, as it takes close to a year of planning and work to make this happen.
  • Howard had a story or two to tell on his meetings with Tim Fischer in the past, or two minute Tim, as he was known. Did you know that Tim Fischer used to read his 2 minutes from a piece of paper that Tim had hidden in his hat?
  • Albert then held an information session for the upcoming Gears and Bears Festival.  This included a map that Albert had prepared, which made it easy for the marshals to locate their positions on Sunday morning. In all Albert gave a concise outline in great detail as to what we are expected to do.
  • Gary Truscott and Barry Langtry will be giving their talk on their life histories, Barry on the 9th October and Gary on the 16th of October.
  • John G advised the members present of his 20 years since being introduced to Rotary by Grahame Miles and being inducted on September 28th 2003.

Another good night of friendship and fun concluded with the fines session by “one crutch”, Dick Jennings our S@A, who did a great job of collecting fines and we did like the fine on Albert for giving Dick a sterile potato for the potato growing competition.

The raffle was won by Grahame (1st prize) with secondary prizes of home made salts and garnishes by Lexi, lemons and eggs won by John G, Bear, Albert and Mary.

JUST FOR LAUGHS

The final domesticated Scottish haggis herd to ever exist was raised in the town of Selkirk, nestled in the Scottish Borders. Editor’s note: I lived for 12 months near Selkirk and can confirm that they are very hard to see.

The Puzzler

Answer to the last puzzlers:

  • Riddle: Your tongue tastes better than it smells.
  • Math puzzle: The probability that the remaining marble is also white is 2/3.

This month’s puzzlers:

  • Riddle: How can the number four be half of five?
  • Brain teaser: Four people are crossing a bridge at night, so they all need a torch—but they have only one that lasts for 15 minutes. Alice can cross in one minute, Ben in two minutes, Cindy in five minutes and Don in eight minutes. No more than two people can cross at a time; and when two cross, they have to go at the slower person’s pace. How do they get across in 15 minutes?

ROTARY NEWS

WOLLUNDY RC GEARS & BEERS

Sunday October 1st the October Labour day weekend, sees our club involved in the Wollundry Rotary Club’s annual Gears & Beers Festival.  This year Albert Suidgeest was the Chair of the our club’s planning and  volunteers committee.  Albert did a great job in taking over from Daryl Breust, who has done this job over the past few Gears & Beers Festivals.

The volunteers began working the week before on the preparation of the Rotary ANZAC biscuits which are now famous.  These biscuits were baked on the previous day being Saturday 30th September. Thanks to Mary Potts for the photos below:

The event started on time on Sunday morning with the Dirty 130 and the Roadie 115.

Photo above from the Gears & Beers Facebook page.

Our club supplied many volunteers as marshals and especially those partners who volunteered at the half way station in Lions Park.  I will get a list of the volunteers at some stage, thanks to all who played a part in the event this weekend.

A message form Gears & Beers just received via Facebook:

“A fabulous job as always Coolamon Rotary Club, thanks.”

The Gears & Beers Facebook page has some great photos of the Dirty 130 and the Roadie 115:
