Coolamon Rotary Bulletin #1819 – 22

Meeting of 3rd December, 2018

President Daryl welcomed 18 members & guests Anne B, Lana Collins (trainee doctor working with Dr Amir for next 2 weeks), Helen L, Barry L & Russell B. Apologies from Myffy, Bern, Sarah, Don, Ian, and Anne.

The Coolamon ambulance station opening will take place on Friday, 7 December. Set up will be at 8.30; official opening is at 9:30 and finish about 11 am.  The following member are rostered on from 8:30:  Ted, John B, Dave, Dick, Lyn  & John G.

Late meeting apologies
Daryl has asked that all members who cannot attend a meeting because of last-minute/unforeseen circumstances to let John Nulty know by midday on the day of the meeting at the latest.  If this is not possible, it is imperative to contact Diane & Gilbert on 6927 3552. The restaurant is charging the club for all members listed to attend, even if they don’t turn up.  It is patently unfair to expect the club to pay for these meals when it is in fact the responsibility of the individual member.

Please let John Nulty know numbers ASAP for Christmas Party at Daryl & Jann’s, so we know how much meat & salads have to be purchased.

Invitations to school presentation nights have been received; the following members and partners are representing our club. Contact the listed members if you wish to attend as well.

Ganmain: Tuesday, 4 Dec.  – Bern & Myffy

St. Brendan’s (Ganmain): ?? Dec   – Bern & Myffy

Thanks to those members who helped with catering last w/e at Steve Exton’s property, which made about $400 from food sales.

DG John G discussed planning for district conference.  John would like our club to look after registrations.

Trainee doctor Lana Collins gave a brief talk on her experience under the John Flynn programme.  President Daryl presented her with a gift pen set as a thank you.

Ted led a lively fine session.  The evening concluded with a raffle, which was won by

Coolamon Rotary Bulletin #1819-16

Meeting of 22nd October, 2018

President Daryl welcomed 22 members & guests Helen L, Jan N, Lorraine H, Maureen H, Sharon M, Barry L, 2 extra guests David Post & Russell Barrow & special guest speaker Leo De Kroo.

Apologies were given from Ian J, Sarah C & Neil M.

Our special guest speaker Leo de Kroo more than spoke, he entertained the 32 of us present, with his stories of growing up in Holland for the first six years of his life and after the war his parents being sent to Indonesia to help in the prison camps. After his father had finished his work there they decided to emigrate to Australia and lived in Perth for a while and then moved to Sydney.

Leo always had a love for music and learnt the guitar and was inspired by the likes of Elvis and others of the mid 1950 genre. In the late 50s he and a mate started up their two-piece band called The de Kroo Brothers and were very persuasive in getting gigs on the Bobby Limb show, Bandstand and Johnny O’Keefe show in the early 1960s. On those shows they worked with some very influential artists of that era, such as Little Pattie, the Bee Gees, the Allen Brothers, Judy Stone, Sandy Scott and many others.

Leo interspersed his talk with songs he strummed and sang, bringing back memories of some of the great songs from that era.  Leo also spoke on the difficulties he encountered in having a stroke last year, the ramifications of that event for him and his recovery.

We will be inviting Leo back at a later date to talk to us about the second part of his life,  living in Dubbo for 45 years, some of that time as a radio announcer, and other adventures he had there.

John N thanks Leo DeKroo for a captivating talk.

Coolamon Rotary Bulletin #1819-15

Meeting of 15th October, 2018

Fourteen members and two guests (Helen L and Russ B) enjoyed a fairly sedate dinner meeting where we discussed some recent and upcoming Rotary activities and shared a bit of fellowship.  Some of the topics under discussion included:

  • Gears & Beers – additional comments regarding improvements for next year’s event, which mostly went quite well.  Representatives from Wollundry Rotary will be at our regular meeting on 29 October for a follow-up meeting.
  • Upcoming catering events including catering for a birder’s club at the Coolamon wetlands (Government Tank) this upcoming Thursday and the spring markets to be held at the Sport & Rec Club on Saturday.
  • Also on Saturday, Howard and Ann have offered space at their Convent property for Rotarians to sell items in the all-of-town garage sale. Proceeds of any sales will go to the club.
  • The driving simulator made quite an impression on students and others while it was at the Coolamon Central School a few weeks ago.  Next up for prospective student drivers is RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness), which will take place in Wagga in March.  Stay tuned for details.

A very enjoyable meal was followed by a rather weak fine session led by our Sargent-At-Arms, Ted.  We’re hoping that Ted will up his game in future.  The evening closed with a meat raffle, which was embarrassingly won by Helen after she drew her own number.  Perhaps those extra raffle tickets won by Wayne by guessing the author of the quote of the week.

Coolamon Rotary Bulletin #1819-13

Meeting of 17th September, 2018

This was not a normal dinner meeting as we had a special presentation from the Rural Outreach Counselling (ROC) representatives.

President Daryl welcomed 13 members & 12 guests. Wayne introduced our 2 guest speakers, David Post & John Harper, to talk on the ROC & the Matekeeper program.

Some points of interest included:

  • ROC MateKeeping is a community self-help program which addresses mental well-being and suicide prevention in rural and remote Australia.
  • Their slogan is “mates share the good times and care during the bad”.
  • 1 in 5 Australians experience some form of depression in their life.
  • A scary fact is 2866 deaths occurred in Australia due to suicide in 2016, with 1 in 3 being male.
  • At the local level suicide prevention is more about community mobilisation, the same that happens around bush fires, flood, cyclones, and other disasters.
  • In small towns people gather around to help their fellow neighbours and town folk.
  • What we all need to do is to reach out and listen and a ROC Matekeeper will support, motivate, etc.  people with mental health problems, so they can be assessed and given help and care.
  • A MateKeeper needs to develop & use 4 skills:
    • Look – Listen – Let somebody know &   Take care of your.self

The ROC team is asking for people to be trained in the Gatekeeper program, such as the QPR (Question, Persuade and Refer) program, which can be completed online.

Coolamon Rotary Bulletin #1819-10

Week of 3rd September, 2018

President Daryl welcomed 19 members & guests Helen L, plus Phil McIntosh, Frank Fuller and David Byfield from Wollundry Rotary Club.

Daryl reminded members of the catering for the Junior Football & Netball awards night catering on Friday from 6 to 8 pm – 4 or so members required.

Paul read out correspondence, including reply letter from Coolamon Shire Council about our concern about toilets behind fire station.

Paul went to Junee Rotary Club as AG and had some interesting discussions; of the five clubs in our district that he oversees, Coolamon & Temora are the healthiest.  Paul is planning to meet with each of the clubs individually and discuss ways to build on their strengths.

Wayne spoke on his visit to the Temora club last Monday to talk about membership.  While there, their ‘moo-poo’ fundraiser was discussed; we might get some ideas as to an alternative way we might run our moo-poo fundraiser.

Wayne also talked on the ROC Coolamon Matekeeper Workshop and asked for our support of that night on Monday, September 24.

The District 9700 driving simulator will be at Coolamon Central School on Sept 20 & 21; our club is footing the bill, and we’re looking for member(s) to put up the two operators for the night to 20 Sept. If interested, please let President Daryl know.

Guest speaker Phil McIntosh spoke on the planning for Gears & Beers, which will be held on on Sunday, September 30. He emphasised the importance of our own safety when on checkpoints.  The longest ride, the Dirty 130, will have about 800 riders, up from the 450 last year.  The two rides that come through Coolamon have been reversed and will now come out to Marrar first and then through Coolamon on their way to Wagga.  Due to the anticipated increase in riders, we will need extra food at the food station at the roundabout in Coolamon.

The raffle was won by John N.

Coolamon Rotary Bulletin #1819-7

Week of 13th August, 2018

In lieu of a regular meeting, this week we hosted a special speaker in the form of Robyn Lewis, a former ice addict who spoke about her remarkable recovery.   Several member of the Coolamon Lions club were present, along with a few students at Coolamon Central School and other members of the community.  Robyn described how she became addicted to numerous substances (simultaneously) and wrestled with this crippling affliction for 17 years.  Along the way, she became estranged from her daughter and saw her partner and several friends meet violent ends, either at the hands of others in the drug community or their own hand.  Robyn supported her drug habit mainly by shoplifting, which is apparently a common source of income for many drug addicts and has become a significant financial burden on many retailers.  Amazingly, Robyn has been able to turn her life around, largely due to the efforts of SMART Recovery, an international program that assists addicts in kicking their drug habits.

It was truly inspiring to see how Robyn has been able to resume a normal, productive life.  Robyn is now employed full time and has made it her mission to inform others about the dangers of ice and other addictive substances, mostly on her own dime.  Robyn has been frustrated, however, by the unwillingness of school districts to allow her to spread the word to school-aged children, which is probably where this education is needed most.  The club will be pursuing various angles to see if inroads can be made to the schools.

President Daryl thanks Robyn Lewis after her presentation.

The club thanked Robyn by presenting her with a financial contribution to help defray the cost of travelling to various locations in the area to give similar presentations.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

A lesson on how consultants can make a difference in an organization:

Last week, we took some friends to a new restaurant, ‘Steve’s Place,’ and noticed that the waiter who took our order carried a spoon in his shirt pocket. It seemed a little strange. When the bus-boy brought our water and utensils, I observed that he also had a spoon in his shirt pocket. Then I looked around and saw that all the staff had spoons in their pockets. When the waiter came back to serve our soup I inquired, ‘Why the spoon?’

‘Well, ‘he explained, ‘the restaurant’s owner hired Andersen Consulting to revamp all of our processes. After several months of analysis, they concluded that the spoon was the most frequently dropped utensil. It represents a drop frequency of approximately 3 spoons per table per hour. If our personnel are better prepared, we can reduce the number of trips back to the kitchen and save 15 man-hours per shift.’

As luck would have it, I dropped my spoon and he replaced it with his spare. ‘I’ll get another spoon next time I go to the kitchen instead of making an extra trip to get it right now.’ I was impressed.

I also noticed that there was a string hanging out of the waiter’s fly. Looking around, I saw that all of the waiters had the same string hanging from their flies. So, before he walked off, I asked the waiter, ‘Excuse me, but can you tell me why you have that string right there?’

‘Oh, certainly!’ Then he lowered his voice. ‘Not everyone is so observant. That consulting firm I mentioned also learned that we can save time in the restroom.
By tying this string to the tip of our you-know-what, we can pull it out without touching it and eliminate the need to wash our hands, shortening the time spent in the restroom by 76.39%.’

I asked quietly, ‘After you get it out, how do you put it back in?’

‘Well,’ he whispered, ‘I don’t know about the others, but I use the spoon.’

Coolamon Rotary Bulletin #1819-4

Week of 23rd July

Sixteen members plus guests Helen L, Jann N and Jan B were on hand to enjoy our weekly meeting.  The meeting kicked off with a group phone call to our outbound exchange student Jackson, who is halfway through his stay in Finland.  Jackson is apparently thoroughly enjoying his time in Finland and getting quite thoroughly immersed in the culture.

phone conversation
Jann N, Jan B and Bernie chat to Jackson on the other side of the world.

The highlight of the evening was John Nulty’s talk about his recent trip to Vietnam, where he, his two sons and a group of army comrades visited a number of sites of significance to his army detachment, mainly to honour fallen mates.  It was an emotional experience for John, but quite satisfying to see how the country has largely mended after the devastating military conflict that took place there in the 1960s.  Vietnam is now a tourist destination, with modern hotels catering to the tourist trade.  Judging from the number of rubber plantations John and his crew visited, rubber seems to be a major crop.  John was particularly impressed with a military museum in Hanoi which had displays documenting military uniforms and techniques through the ages. Daryl thanked John for a most interesting presentation and presented him with one of our new Coolamon Rotary pen and torch sets.

Daryl thanks John N
John N looks very pleased with his new Coolamon Rotary pen and torch set, presented to him by President Daryl.

Ted led an entertaining fine session, as usual, and the evening concluded with a raffle which was won by Julie.

Coolamon News Bulletin #1819-1

Week of 2 July

Because of the changeover on Saturday, there was no meeting this week.  This issue of the bulletin features a number of photos from the changeover and a letter from Immediate Past President Paul.

Parting words from IPP Paul Weston

Well, another Rotary year is over, and it’s time to look toward the new year.  Before we do, I just wanted to reflect on the past year, review our accomplishments and acknowledge those that helped to make this past year memorable.

Our year started with welcoming the arrival of Lucia Bohnsack, a Rotary exchange student from Germany.  Lucia is our first exchange student in some time, and has added an interesting dimension to Rotary events, the lives of her host families, and to the Coolamon Central School community.  It has been a very full year for Lucia, who heads back to Germany next week.  It was a great experience for all, and we wish Lucia the best in her future endeavours.  We look forward to future visits from Lucia, and know that if we ever visit Germany, we’ll have a home waiting for us there.

Early in the year we celebrated Christmas in July, another first in many years.  Although there was no snow, the cold weather made it feel a bit like a Northern Hemisphere winter, even to transplants such as Leslie and me.  I hope this is a tradition that continues.  From there, we sped through the Rotary year, helping out with Gears and Beers, the Historic Fire Engine Muster, New Year’s Eve, Easter Markets, the Red Shield Appear and, finally, the changeover, a historic one for the club because the incoming District Governor was one of our own.  Punctuating the major activities were our monthly bingo, periodic District 9700 happenings (e.g. DisTect, PETS, and the district conference), street raffles, catering at several clearing sales, and this year, a number of events focussed on mental health (two mental health forums and the Mental Health First Aid training course).  The completion of another edition of the Coolamon Rotary telephone directory and monthly issues of the Coolamon Community Chronicle rounded out our club activities.  I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the several social events we held at the newly renovated convent courtesy of member Howard and his partner Anne, and the pleasantly numerous induction ceremonies we held this year!

All of these events required substantial person-power, which was largely provided by the members of Coolamon Rotary.  I appreciate the dedication of our members and their willingness to put service above self, one of our key guiding principles.  I am proud of our achievements over the past year, and I hope our members share that sense of pride.  I think we ended the Rotary year in a stronger position that we started, which is all a leader can ask for.  I thank all of our members for their contributions over the year, and thank Leslie for her patience with my time commitment to our club and Rotary as a whole.  Finally, I hope that recognising several of our members (Myffy Colette, Wayne Lewis and Bernadette Milne) with PHFs will convey to them how much we deeply appreciate their personal sacrifices and commitment to Rotary.  I’m sure all the members join me in wishing President Daryl and DG John the best as they start the new Rotary year, and will be there to help out throughout the year.

Coolamon Rotary News Bulletin #23

Monday 25th June

President Paul welcomed 20 members, including infrequently seen Will C, plus guests Helen L, Peta & Charlie Wykes, Jan N, Jan B, Sharon M, Maureen H, Digby, Jodie & Abigail Graham, Lexi F & last but not least our exchange student Lucia.

Secretary John B read out correspondence before we settled down for a beaut Chinese banquet, which was enjoyed by all except John N, who was spoilt with prawn cutlets, etc.

Paul called for volunteers for several activities taking place this week  –

Cutting/splitting firewood on Thursday arvo for Saturday’s street raffle. Contact Wayne (6927 3501) for directions if you’re able to help.

Setting up Ganmain Hall on Friday at 1 pm for the changeover on Saturday night.

Street raffle on Saturday morning (6:00-noon).

President Paul thanked all members for their contributions over the past year, noting that Monday’s meeting was the last of his year as president.

Guest Speaker, Lucia Bohnsack

Lucia then did a fantastic presentation of her experiences during her year in Australia, showing slides of her host families, many of the places she has visited, Australian holidays she has experienced and how they differ from those in Germany, some of the Aussie colloquialisms she has learnt, and some of the uniquely Aussie foods she has come to enjoy such as Vegemite, meat pies, Golden Gaytimes, Pavlova, Milo, snags, Tim Tams, etc. Paul thanked Lucia and presented her with a pair of earrings to serve as an additional souvenir of her time in Coolamon, Lucia’s new home on the other side of the world.  Lucia invited all in attendance to visit her and her family if they’re ever in Germany.

Lucia gave a wonderful talk on her experiences in Australia. Her bright and open personality means touched everyone heart in some way and she will be missed by her host families and the rotary club in general when she returns home.

Coolamon Rotary News Bulletin #22

Monday 18th June

Paul welcomed 19 members & guest Helen L.  Secretary John read out correspondence.

Next week is send off evening for Lucia.

Daryl & Paul met with Assistant Principal Josh Celi at Coolamon Central School to discuss working relationship with Rotary in conjunction with RYDA, CCC,  Youth Exchange, etc. The main item of discussion was financial support for a community youth welfare officer, which the club is eager to support.  Both parties are keen to develop a stronger relationship with the goal of enriching educational and other support for students at the school and in the community.

The night featured talks by three of our members.  Lyn Schadel gave a brief talk on her life and her great tribe of grandchildren, which was followed by a brief talk by Ann Rzeszkowski on her life, including her very interesting work with the irrigation district in Coleambally.

John Nulty then made a presentation on his time serving in Vietnam back in 1968/69 and showed a wealth of revealing photos from 50 years ago.

Ted finished the night with an entertaining fine session.

The evening concluded with a brief discussion of plans for the upcoming changeover.

IMPORTANT REMINDER: A number of members have not been sending in apologies when they are unable to attend our weekly meeting.  This causes problems for the caterer and our club, and results in wasted food.  We will be strictly enforcing the policy of charging members for meals if they have not sent in an apology, whether they are in attendance or not.
