Dr. William Fowlds, President Stella Swanson and Jo Wilmot Kenton-on-Sea Rotary Club.
Dear John
It looks as though you had a wonderful time at Conference in Sydney! We can’t wait to hear more…!
From our side, we had our hand-over of our donations to Chipembere Rhino Foundation last week for our Save Our Rhino Project.
Unfortunately, Brent Cook was ill so Dr William Fowlds stood in for CRF (as a trustee).
A total of R24,000.00 was handed over to CRF:
· R18,000.00 from the Rotary Club of Coolamon NSW
· R3,000.00 from the Rotary Friendship Exchange Group – USA
· R3,000.00 from the Rotary Club of Kenton-on-Sea
Attached please find the photograph of Will for CRF, Stella Swanson – our President, and me for RAGES with the cheque for R18,000.00 that we received from yourselves!
Thanks again, John! Please extend our grateful thanks to all those that helped make the fundraiser happen!
A local reserve has reached out for 5 tracking devices so we are hoping to confirm this week! We will keep you in the loop!
Then, the most heartfelt thank you to you, John, for driving RAGES with so much passion and conviction. We are truly in awe and so inspired!
PE Moses Aryee (above in the white shirt), is the World President of BREW and comes from Ghana and is a member of the RC of Accra West. Met Moses at the BREW booth in Sydney a most jovial chap!
SYDNEY RICON 2014 IS OVER
A great time with wonderful like minded people from around the world. The train rides from Central to Olympic City were fun and everyone was in a great mood. Our booth # 229 attracted a lot of interest and Rotarains wanting to join us in Kenya on 2015. Here is a pictorial of some of the high lights too many things happened to compile a full report:
A total of 340 Rotarians waving 278 flags climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge to break two world records. But the biggest win of all was the money — and awareness — raised to help end polio.
Click on the thumb nails for a larger image. We had a lot of fun! Hope you recognise a few friends in the photos and the last one is of Di Collins a good friend of ours from Perth and the RC of Freshwater Bay, a great supporter.
PDG Fred Loneragan and I looked after our booth # 229 for the 5 days plus one day setting up prior to the Convention. The above photos are a small representation of what went on in Sydney. Visitors to our booth a plenty including PRIP Bill Boyd and Lorna Boyd from New Zealand. PRIP Bill is the Patron for the Mount Kenya 2015 Climb.
We had help from many members of D9700 including DG Geoff Tancred and Bettye Tancred. Wagga Wagga Sunrise members with President Peter Gissing also helped on the booth. PDG Barbara Shayeb-Helou, a RAGES board member, also did a lot of work for us and promoted our climb and RAGES to all and sundry Barbara is from South Carolina.
Susan and I went to Vivid Sydney like many delegates and enjoyed the amazing light show Sydney put on.
We did not have much time to attend any plenary sessions however we made the opening and closing plenaries. Coolamon had two members present in Sydney Garth Perkin and myself, thanks to Garth for the help during the Convention. Thanks also to Susan for all the work in setting up and taking down the booth and to all those who helped us. The 10 tenors and Marina Prior were outstanding at the closing ceremony as was the speech by incoming Rotary World President Gary Huang.
“I think all of you know the Chinese philosopher Confucius. Sometimes I call him the world’s first Rotarian, because even though he died 2,500 years before Rotary was founded, his ideas are very much Rotary ideas. And one of the things he said was “與其抱怨, 不如改變.”
In English, you say, “It is better to light a single candle, than to sit and curse the darkness.” That sums up everything that we think in Rotary. There are so many problems in the world, so many people who need help.
And many people say, “There’s nothing I can do.” They sit there. Do nothing. Everything stays dark. But this is not the Rotary way. The Rotary way is the Confucius way. The Rotary way is to light a candle. I light one. You light one. 1.2 million people all light one.
We manned the gate for Brad’s FLIGHT For Life at the Coolamon Showground on Saturday and Sunday this Queen’s Birthday long weekend. here are a few photos of the event a full report will be available next week.
President Elect Garth Perkin, PP Neil Munro and PEN Wayne Lewis at the gate!

In Seven Days
In the beginning God created day and night. He created day for footy matches, going to the beach and barbies. He created night for going prawning, sleeping and barbies. God saw that it was good.
Evening came and morning came and it was the second Day.
On the Second Day God created water – for surfing, swimming and barbies on the beach. God saw that it was good. Evening came and morning came and it was the Third Day.
On the Third Day God created the Earth to bring forth plants – to provide tobacco, malt and yeast for beer and wood for barbies. God saw that it was good. Evening came and morning came and it was the Fourth Day.
On the Fourth Day God created animals and crustaceans for chops, sausages, steak and prawns for barbies. God saw that it was good. Evening came and morning came and it was the Fifth Day.
On the Fifth day God created a bloke – to go to the footy, enjoy the beach, drink the beer and eat the meat and prawns at barbies. God saw that it was good. Evening came and morning came and it was the Sixth Day.
On the Sixth Day God saw that this bloke was lonely and needed someone to go to the footy, surf, drink beer, eat and stand around the barbie with. So God created Mates, and God saw that they were good blokes. God saw that it was good. Evening came and morning came and it was the Seventh Day.
On the Seventh Day God looked around at the twinkling barbie fires, heard the hiss of opening beer cans and the raucous laughter of all the Blokes, smelled the aroma of grilled chops and sizzling prawns and God saw that it was good. well almost good. God saw that the blokes were tired and needed a rest.
So God created Sheilas – to clean the house, bear children, wash, cook and clean the barbie. God saw that it was not just good, it was better than that, it was bloody great! IT WAS AUSTRALIA !!

ROTARY’S FUTURE TAKES CENTER STAGE ON LAST DAY OF SYDNEY CONVENTION
Gertrude Adzo Akpalo walked out of the Allphones Arena in Sydney more inspired than ever to do her part to inject youth and energy into Rotary, helping to secure its future. Read more
Rotary Scholar Kelsi Lopatecki Cox is a prime example of what can happen when you nurture young people. During her speech to the convention audience, she championed innovative technology and education as a way to address poverty and under-development in rural communities. She is program coordinator for the Digital Learning Room, a project that brings technology to schools in the South Pacific.
“The challenges faced by our world are great, and they won’t go away overnight,” said Cox. “By supporting education, by embracing technology, by daring to think outside of the box, we can address poverty and inequality. But we can’t do it alone; when we join together, we are stronger. Together, we can create a world of opportunity.”

MONDAY MEETING MAY 26th 2014
We were low on numbers tonight due to the flu and members being away. However we had two guests Susan Glassford and Helen Lewis. Garth Perkin brought along Anne Frizell as our guest speaker tonight. Anne is studying at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga for her Bachelor of Education and wants to specialise in teaching agriculture.
Anne gave a very interesting talk which was well received by everyone. In his vote of thanks Neil Munro said that Australia is in good stead with young inspiring and hard working women such as Anne. Anne comes from the land from Armidale and has two sisters, loves farming and is passionate about teaching. Anne was introduced to Rotary by her school bus driver in Armidale and we are convinced that Anne will make a very good Rotarian when she graduates. Well done Anne.
Anne Frizell and PP Neil Munro
President Dick Jennings reminded all members that next weekend we are required to man the gates for Brad’s Flight for Life at the Coolamon Showgrounds. The Barber
A guy sticks his head in the barber shop and asks, “How long before I can et a haircut?” The barber looks around the shop and says, “About two hours.” The guy leaves.
A few days later, the same guy sticks his head in the door and asks, “How long before I get a haircut?” The barber looks around the shop full of customers and says, “About two hours.” The guy leaves.
A week later, the same guy sticks his head in the shop and asks, “How long before I can get a haircut?” The barber looks around the shop an says, “About an hour and half.” The guy leaves.
The barber looks over at a friend in the shop and says, “Hey Bill, follow that guy and see where he goes.” In a little while, Bill comes back into the shop laughing hysterically. The barber asks, “Bill, where did he go when he left here?” Bill looked up and said,
“To your house.”

Grounds for Divorce
A judge was interviewing a woman regarding her pending divorce and asks, “What are the grounds for your divorce?”
She replied, “About four acres and a nice little home in the middle of the property.”
“I mean,” he continued, “What are your relations like?”
“I have an aunt and uncle living here in town, and so do my husband’s parents.”
He said, “Do you have a real grudge?”
“No,” she replied, “We have a two-car carport and have never really needed one.”
“Please,” he tried again, “is there any infidelity in your marriage?”
“Yes, both my son and daughter have stereo sets. We don’t necessarily like the music, but the answer to your question is ‘yes’.”
“Ma’am, does your husband ever beat you up?”
“Yes,” she responded, “most days he gets up earlier than I do.”
Finally, in frustration, the judge asked, “Lady, why do you want a divorce?”
“Oh, I don’t want a divorce,” she replied. “I never wanted a divorce. It’s husband. He says he can’t communicate with me.”

Another elephant tragedy in Kenya. This is what we are fighting against with RAGES.
We are devastated to report that Mountain Bull has been found dead, having been speared on the slopes of Mount Kenya.
Mountain Bull was a magnificent elephant who achieved notoriety for his fence-breaking habit, but who helped make the Laikipia Elephant Corridor famous when he (eventually) learnt to use this path between his mountain hideaway and the ladies of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.
The Elephant Crisis Fund is moving fast to counter this appalling waste of beauty and life. Losing Mountain Bull spurs us to redouble our efforts.
Here he is pictured in his prime. RIP, Mountain Bull.

A journalist became lost on the back roads and stopped at a farm to get directions. As he was talking to the farmer he noticed a pig with a wooden leg. “How did the pig get a wooden leg?” he asked the farmer.
“Well”, said the farmer, “that’s a very special pig. One night not too long ago we had a fire start in the barn, and that pig set up a great squealing that woke everyone, and by the time we got there he had herded all the other animals out of the barn. Saved ’em all.”
“And that was when he hurt his leg?” asked the journalist anxious for a story.
“Nope, he pulled through that just fine.” said the farmer.
“Though a while later, I was back in the woods when a bear attacked me. Well, sir, that pig was near by and he came running and set on that bear and chased him off. Saved me for sure.”
“Wow! So the bear injured his leg then?” questioned the journalist.
“Nope. He came away without a scratch. Though a few days later, my tractor turned over in a ditch and I was knocked unconscious. Well, that pig dove into the ditch and pulled me out before I got cut up in the machinery.”
“Ahh! So his leg got caught by the combine?” asked the newsman.
“Noooope. We both walked away from that one.” says the farmer.
“So how did he get the wooden leg?” the reporter quized.
“Well”, the farmer replied, “A pig that good, you can’t eat all at once.”

Howard Buffett is on deadline. In 2006, his father, U.S. investor and philanthropist Warren Buffett, challenged him to do something great in the world – and gave him $1 billion to do it. So he gave himself 40 years to spend every penny in a bold attempt to end global hunger. After a second stock gift in 2012 and favorable returns, he has about $3 billion now. An Illinois farmer, Buffett spends part of the year in the cab of his tractor and the rest of his time leading the Howard G. Buffett Foundation.

I have now accumulated 1,000 Foundation Recognition points and decided to award Susan the PHF. In my opinion well deserved for supporting me in Rotary for the past 11 years. It was also apt that Susan was recognised this way in the presence of her son Darius and her granddaughter Sasha.

MONDAY MEETING MAY 5th 2014
Last night we had the pleasure of the company of Libby Cruikshank our guest speaker for the evening.
Libby used to be the chemist in charge at the Coolamon Pharmacy. Libby now lives on a farm outside of Coolamon and works part time for the Coolamon Shire with Medicare Local. Medicare Local provides preventative care to offset the likelihood of health problems before they happen. This is a wonderful idea and deserves full support form all sides of politics.
Libby gave a sincere and informative presentation on what Medicare Local does and we learnt that they also conduct safe food handling classes, Men’s Shed guidance, ageing population needs and preventative medical care. We all agreed that we need to look at ways that Rotary can help Libby continue her work in our Shire.
Neil Munro presented Libby with a kangaroo money pouch:
As you all know Max Chapman was a member of our club and is now a member of the Wagga Wagga Sunrise Club. Sue and Max are having an Open Garden Day at their home in Wagga Wagga.

ROTARY INFORMATION
DISTRICT 9700 ASSEMBLY GRENFELL 2014
This weekend we went to Grenfell for the D9700 Assembly. It was COLD very COLD however the warmth of Rotarains in fellowship and a common purpose far outweighed the COLD. The Rotary Club of Grenfell put on another good day for us all around 150 attended a good roll up.
District Assembly is where the incoming board members of each club in our District get to refresh and learn from our District Board on what is expected of us during the next Rotary year. The day was conducted by our District Trainer Mary Brell from Orange Daybreak.
DGE David Kennedy introduced the theme for 2014-2015 Light Up Rotary:
RIPE Gary Huang and Corinna Huang
RI President-elect Gary C.K. Huang chose Light Up Rotary as his theme for 2014-15. Huang was inspired by the teachings of Chinese philosopher Confucius who said: “It is better to light a single candle, than to sit and curse the darkness.”
“There are so many problems in the world, so many people who need help. Many people say, ‘There’s nothing I can do.’ So they sit there doing nothing. Meanwhile everything stays dark,” Huang told the 537 district governors and their spouses and partners who are attending the 2014 International Assembly in San Diego, California.
“The Rotary way is the Confucius way. The Rotary way is to light a candle. I light one, you light one, 1.2 million Rotarians light one. Together, we light up the world,” said Huang, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Taipei in Taiwan.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
The Dream
A man goes into his son’s room to wish him goodnight. His son is having a nightmare – the man wakes him and asks his son if he is OK? The son replies he is scared because he dreamt that Auntie Susie had died. The father assures the son that Auntie Susie is fine and sends him to bed.
The next day, Auntie Susie dies.
One week later, the man again goes into his son’s room to wish him goodnight. His son is having another nightmare – the man again wakes his son. The son this time says that he had dreamt that granddaddy had died. The father assures the son that granddaddy is fine and sends him to bed.
The next day, granddaddy dies.
One week later, the man again goes into his son’s room to wish him goodnight. His son is having another nightmare – the man again wakes his son. The son this time says that he had dreamt that daddy had died. The father assures the son that he is OK and sends the boy to bed.
The man goes to bed but cannot sleep because he is so terrified
The next day, the man is scared for his life- he is sure is going to die. After dressing he drives very cautiously to work fearful of a collision. He doesn’t eat lunch because he is scared of food poisoning. He avoids everyone for he is sure he will somehow be killed. He jumps at every noise, starts at every movement and hides under his desk.
Upon walking in his front door at the end of the day, he finds his wife. “Good God, Dear,” he proclaims, “I’ve just had the worst day of my entire life!”
She responds, “You think your day was bad, the milkman dropped dead on the doorstep this morning.”
ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT RON BURTON:
MAY 2014
I’ve had a unique opportunity to be a part of the polio eradication campaign from its very beginnings, more than a quarter century ago, to where we are now, which is truly “this close” to the end.
None of us knew back then how long eradication would take, or how many obstacles we’d meet along the way. I’m not sure how we would have felt about taking on the challenge if we had known. But there is one thing I know for sure: that every single day of the last 29 years has been worth it. Because over those years, we have saved millions of children from being paralyzed by polio. There’s no way to put a price tag on that. And today, we are closer than ever to a world in which no child will be paralyzed, ever again.
It’s been a long race to the finish line. That line is now in sight. But we’ll only cross it if we keep moving forward. And the only way to do that is with the help of every single Rotarian, everywhere in the world.
The first thing we need is your voice, and your advocacy. Think ahead to World Polio Day, on 24 October: What can your club and district do to raise awareness? Write letters to your elected officials, hold a purple pinkie fundraiser, plan an event with a local school. If you or someone you know has a story to tell about polio, share it at www.endpolionow.org/stories. The most important thing is to keep the momentum going. Let your community, and the world, know that the fight against polio is at its most critical stage yet.
I’m glad to report that the End Polio Now – Make History Today campaign is going well. Rotary met the terms of the new agreement with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and received US$70 million in matching funds in January, which will be fully committed in this calendar year. We have four more years of this agreement remaining, during which the Gates Foundation will match two-to-one every dollar Rotary spends on polio, to a maximum of $35 million per year. I encourage all of you to do what you can to help us make the most of this opportunity. I know that together, we can engage Rotary to end polio – and change the world, forever.

Monday night we had as our guest speaker Deborah Braines from Ronald MacDonald House in Wagga Wagga. Deborah is also a member of the Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga Sunrise. The evening was in response to the Trike Club Catering that we organised and conducted in Wagga recently. The proceeds from the catering went to Ronald MacDonald House. Craig Corrigan organised the 140 or so Aussie Trikers to visit and stay in Wagga Wagga for the AGM. The catering raised $2,100 and the raffles and head shaving a further $3,900 a total of $6,000 for the event.
Ronald MacDonald House is all done by volunteers and they rely on donations from the public and conducting fund raising projects to keep the house going 24 hours a day. The house is manned by volunteers and they do a wonderful job.
John Glassford presenting the cheque of $2,100 from the catering done in the main by the three ladies in the photo above with Deborah. Left to Right Bernadette Milne, Myffy Collette and far right Susan Wingate-Pearse.
Other matters discussed last night included a report on the Easter Markets by Grahame Miles which showed a profit of $1,121 well done all round and President Dick thanked all those who volunteered and Paul Weston will be writing a letter of thanks to all involved.
Ian Durham brought us up to date with the telephone book and Ian asked all of those who had a proof reading job to please complete it asap. John Glassford brought us all up to date on the Kenyan Night in Ganmain and called for volunteers to help on the Friday set up, Saturday with the event and Sunday clean up. The night is fully booked and John requested those who have not paid as yet to do so asap to save time on the night.

ALUMNI AWARD WINNERS TURN HEADS WITH UNIQUE ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Maya Ajmera visits a shelter for abandoned girls in Chennai, India. The Global Fund for Children, which she founded, provides seed funding to organizations that educate children and protect their rights.
Photo Credit: Photo courtesy of Maya Ajmera
Maya Ajmera founded the Global Fund for Children in 1993 to provide seed money to community-based organizations that help at-risk children across the world. Since then, GFC has awarded more than $32 million in grants to over 600 organizations in 80 countries, improving the lives of millions of children – from educating AIDS orphans in Uganda to conducting so-called curbside classrooms for waste pickers in Cambodia.
“Education is the key to getting human beings out of poverty,” says Ajmera, whose studies at St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai were sponsored by the Rotary Club of China Lake in California. “Community-based organizations are probably the most creative in being able to find the most marginalized children and provide education that is meaningful and makes sense in their lives.”
In recognition of her work, Ajmera was chosen by The Rotary Foundation Trustees to receive the 2013-14 Rotary Foundation Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award. She will receive the honor at the Rotary International Convention in Sydney on 3 June.
1st woman: It wasn’t so bad. After I quit shaking from the cold, I began to get warm & sleepy, and finally died a peaceful death. What about you?
2nd woman: I died of a massive heart attack. I suspected that my husband was cheating, so I came home early to catch him in the act.
But instead, I found him all by himself in the den watching TV.
1st woman: So, what happened?
2nd woman: I was so sure there was another woman there somewhere that I started running all over the house looking.
I ran up into the attic and searched, and down into the basement. Then I went through every closet and checked under all the beds.
I kept this up until I had looked everywhere, and finally I became so exhausted that I just keeled over with a heart attack and died.
1st woman: Too bad you didn’t look in the freezer—we’d both still be alive.
The Library
A blonde stormed up to the front desk of the library and said, “I have a complaint!”
“Yes, Ma’am?” said the librarian looking up at her.
“I borrowed a book last week and it was horrible!”
Puzzled by her complain the librarian asked “What was wrong with it?”
“It had way too many characters and there was no plot whatsoever!” said the blonde.
The librarian nodded and said, “Ahhh. So you must be the person who took our phone book.”

Arriving at the Sydney Lyric Theatre in March 2014, STRICTLY BALLROOM THE MUSICAL will tango, sashay and bogo pogo its way onto the stage thanks to the original creative team behind the classic 1992 Australian film, including director and co-writer Baz Luhrmann, set and costume designer Catherine Martin, choreographer John “Cha Cha” O’Connell and co-writer Craig Pearce.
STRICTLY BALLROOM THE MUSICAL is the inspiring story of a championship ballroom dancer who defies all the rules to follow his heart.
This uplifting and courageous tale originated as a stage play that Baz Luhrmann devised with a group of other students at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in 1984, before dancing into the hearts of audiences world wide as the award winning feature film.
In a brand new theatrical production, STRICTLY BALLROOM THE MUSICAL will bring this iconic story to life on stage. It will feature break-into-song numbers created from original classics from the film, Love is in the Air, Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps and Time After Time as well as newly composed songs.
Be a part of history and experience the drama, the humour, the romance in the sparkling, sequined spectacular that inspired the world to dance.
