MONDAY MEETING 4th November 2013

This Monday night we had a regular meeting followed by a board meeting.  We welcomed Helen Lewis as a guest tonight.

Down in numbers right now due to the harvest starting around here.  However we had two good meetings and finished at 8.30 after a very nice roast dinner.  Wayne Lewis reported on the Coolamon Photographic Competition held at the Up-to-date Store.  Grahame Miles reported on our Shop Locally campaign’s Christmas Flyer.

Ian Durham advised us that the RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness) week will be from the 17-21 of March 2014 in Wagga Wagga.

Grahame Miles outlined the membership brain storming meeting to be held on Monday 18th November.  all members are invited to attend and discuss ways we can increase our membership.

Don’t forget next Monday we have Col Paterson as our guest speaker.

The Melbourne Cup Club sweep.  I cannot announce any winners here as there is some controversy surrounding our draw and some confusion as to what number is what.  I am sure that it will be sorted out on Monday night.

The board meeting which followed was quick and efficient.

On 26 October, the RI Board and Foundation trustees had a joint meeting in Evanston. The RI Board meets 28 October through 1 November.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

MOBILE PHONE USE IN PUBLIC

After a tiring day, a commuter settled down in his seat and closed his eyes.

As the train rolled out of the station, the young woman sitting next to him pulled out her mobile phone and started talking in a loud voice: “Hi, sweetheart. It’s Sue. I’m on the train….

“Yes, I know it’s the six-thirty and not the four-thirty, but I had a long meeting….

“No, honey, not with that Kevin from the accounting office. It was with the boss….

“No sweetheart, you’re the only one in my life….

“Yes, I’m sure. Cross my heart!”

Fifteen minutes later, she was still talking loudly.

When the man sitting next to her had had enough, he leaned over and said into the phone, “Sue, hang up the phone and come back to bed.”

Sue doesn’t use her mobile phone in public any longer.

The Coffin

A man was walking home alone late one night when he hears a BUMP… BUMP… BUMP… behind him.

Walking faster he looks back, and makes out the image of an upright coffin banging its way down the middle of the street towards him … BUMP… BUMP… BUMP…

Terrified, the man begins to run towards his home, the coffin bouncing quickly behind him … faster… faster… BUMP… BUMP… BUMP.

He runs up to his door, fumbles with his keys, opens the door, rushes in, slams and locks the door behind him.  However, the coffin crashes through his door, with the lid of the coffin clapping … clappity-BUMP… clappity-BUMP… clappity-BUMP… on the heals of the terrified man.

Rushing upstairs to the bathroom, the man locks himself in. His heart is pounding; his head is reeling; his breath is coming in sobbing gasps.  With a loud CRASH the coffin breaks down the door. Bumping and clapping towards him. The man screams and reaches for something, anything … but all he can find is a box of cough drops! Desperate, he throws the cough drops at the coffin …
… and of course …

… the coffin stops!

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

An oldie but a good one.

The Light Bulb.

A doctor of psychology was doing his normal morning rounds when he entered a patient’s room.

He found Patient #1 sitting on the floor, pretending to saw a piece of wood in half.

Patient #2 was hanging from the ceiling, by his feet.

The doctor asked patient number 1 what he was doing.

The patient replied, “Can’t you see I’m sawing this piece of wood in half?”

The doctor inquired of Patient #1 what Patient #2 was doing.

Patient #1 replied, “Oh. He’s my friend, but he’s a little crazy. He thinks he’s a lightbulb.”

The doctor looks up and notices Patient #2’s face is going all red.

The doctor asks Patient #1, “If he’s your friend, you should get him down from there before he hurts himself”

Patient #1 replies, “What? And work in the dark?”

Farmer John

Farmer John lived on a quiet rural highway. But, as time went by, the trafic slowly built up at an alarming rate. The traffic was so heavy and so fast that his chickens were being run over at a rate of three to six a day.

So one day Farmer John called the sheriff’s office and said, “You’ve got to do something about all of these people driving so fast and killing all of my chickens.”

“What do you want me to do?” asked the sheriff. “I don’t care, just do something about those crazy drivers!” So the next day he had the county workers go out and erected a sign that said:

SLOW:

SCHOOL CROSSING

Three days later Farmer John called the sheriff and said, “You’ve got to do something about these drivers. The ‘school crossing’ sign seems to make them go even faster.” So, again, the sheriff sends out the county workers and they put up a new sign:

SLOW:

CHILDREN AT PLAY

That really sped them up. So Farmer John called and called and called every day for three weeks. Finally, he asked the sheriff, “Your signs are doing no good.. Can I put up my own sign?”

The sheriff told him, “Sure thing, put up your own sign..”

He was going to let the Farmer John do just about anything in order to get him to stop calling everyday to complain.

The sheriff got no more calls from Farmer John. Three weeks later, curiosity go the best of the sheriff and he decided to give Farmer John a call. “How’s the problem with those drivers.

Did you put up your sign?” “Oh, I sure did. And not one chicken has been killed since then. I’ve got to go. I’m very busy.”
He hung up the phone.

The sheriff was really curious now and he thought to himself, “I’d better go out there and take a look at that sign… it might be something that WE could use to slow down drivers…”

So the sheriff drove out to Farmer John’s house, and his jaw dropped the moment he saw the sign. It was spray-painted on a sheet of wood:

NUDIST COLONY

Go slow and watch out for chicks!!

CAUSES WORTH SUPPORTING

This week I received this email from one of the students in Mathare that we have sponsored.

“Hello,

I believe you are doing fine I have some good and bad news this time round.

I will start with the good one: I was able to see Tracy at her school and she is doing fine it was their career day and she wants to be a Lawyer or a Teacher.

I will send pictures of her through drop box.

The bad news: My house got burnt down on Saturday at around 1pm around here houses catch fire really fast and we lost most of our stuff though we were able to recover some before the angry fire destroyed everything. We thank God nobody died in the inferno or got injured we are currently staying with my uncle who lives around.

I will also send pictures of the place we used to call home which is now burnt down to ashes.

All for now
Your friend

Quinter

{Click on the thumb nail photos below to enlarge them}.

I intend to do something to help Quinter, her mother and brother.  Tracy, her sister we sponsor at the moment to a boarding high school in Kisumu.  This is also or was Tracy’s home.

The Rotary Club of Nairobi is going to advise us on what is needed to re house Quinter and her family.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

Tonto.

A man boarded an aircraft at London and took his seat; as he settled in

he noticed a very beautiful woman boarding the plane. He realized she was heading straight towards his seat and bingo! she took the seat right beside him.

Eager to strike up a conversation, he blurted out, ‘business trip or vacation?’  She turned, smiled enchantingly and said ‘Business. I’m going to the annual nymphomaniac convention in the United States’.

He swallowed hard, here was the most gorgeous woman he had ever seen sitting next to him, and she was going to a meeting for nymphomaniacs .  Struggling to maintain his composure, he calmly asked, ‘What’s your
business role at this convention?’

‘Lecturer,’ she responded.. ‘I use my experience to debunk some of the popular myths about sexuality.’ ‘Really’, he smiled, ‘what myths are those?’

‘Well,’ she explained, ‘ one popular myth is that African American men are the most well endowed when, in fact, it’s the Native American Indian who is most likely to possess that trait.

Another popular myth is that French men are the best lovers, when actually it is the men of Greek descent. We have also found that the best potential lovers in all categories are the Irish,’

Suddenly the woman became uncomfortable and blushed. ‘I’m sorry,’ she said, ‘I really shouldn’t be discussing this with you, I don’t even know your name.’

‘Tonto,’ the man said…. ‘Tonto Papadopoulos , but my friends call me Paddy.’

‘The Hangover’

A husband wakes up at home with a huge hangover.

He forces himself to open his eyes and the first thing he sees is a couple of aspirins and a glass of water on the side table.

He sits down and sees his clothing in front of him, all cleaned and pressed. He looks around the room and sees that it is in perfect order, spotless and clean. The rest of the house is in equally good shape.

He takes the aspirins and notices a note on the table.

“Honey, breakfast is on the table. I left early to go grocery shopping. Love You!”

He is totally shocked by the loving note. He goes to the kitchen and there is a hot breakfast and morning newspaper ready for him.

His son is eating at the table.

He asks, “Son, what happened last night?”

His son says, “Well, you came home around 3 a.m. drunk and delirious. You broke some crockery, puked in the hall and gave yourself a black eye when you stumbled into the door”.

Confused, the man asks, “So why is everything in order and so clean? Why is there breakfast on the table waiting for me? I should expect to have a big quarrel with your mom!”

His son replies, “Oh, that! Mom dragged you to the bedroom and when she tried to take your clothes and shoes off, you said, ‘Lady Leave Me Alone! I’m Married!’”

ROTARY INFORMATION

WORLD POLIO DAY OCTOBER 24th.

http://www.polioeradication.org/

Source: Donald McNeil, SMH News Review 24-25 August 2013

The global effort to eradicate Polio is facing serious set backs in two continents.

The virus is surging in Somalia and the Horn of Africa, largely free of cases for several years.  And a new outbreak has begun in a part of Pakistan that a warlord declared off-limits to vaccinators 14 months ago.

The African outbreak began in May with two cases, one in Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital and the other in the huge Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya where Somalis have fled to escape from the internal conflict.  Now there are 121 cases in the region; last year there were only 232 cases in the world

The new Pakistan outbreak is in North Waziristan, near the frontier with Afghanistan.  Before this outbreak, Pakistan had seen only 24 cases this year, about as many as it had in the same point in 2012.

Although only three children have contacted polio since the warlord ban on vaccination programs, even one case shows that the virus remains in the area and could spread.  The Pakistan outbreak is particularly frustrating, because vaccination programs had been going steadily forward towards eradication.

Dr Elias Durry, emergency coordinator for polio eradication in Pakistan for the World Health Organisation (WHO), says the equation is simple.

Where you can immunise against polio, the virus goes away.  Where you cannot immunise children, the virus gets in.

These new outbreaks may delay the recently announced $5.5 billion plan to eradicate polio by 2018.

PP BILL INNES MPHF 1934-2013

Above: Bill doing what he did best looking after the money!

“This week our Scottish friend and past president of our club Bill Innes passed away.   Bill was a Charter Member of the Coolamon Rotary Club.  Of late Bill was not in the best of health and we have missed his presence at our meetings.  Always a man with conviction and a wicked sense of humour.

Bill served the club well and he was always one of the first to put his hand up if anything needed doing within our community.

Bill joined Coolamon Rotary as a charter member on the 15th November 1971 and was awarded his Paul Harris Fellow in September 1988.   In June 2008 Bill was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow Sapphire pin for his amazing work with Legacy in Wagga Wagga.  Apart from his work in Rotary Bill had been a volunteer with Legacy since 2002.  Bill was responsible for the welfare of 18 War Widows and tended to their needs and welfare. Bill was the second highest fund raiser for Legacy in the Riverina from Wagga to Deniliquin, and was highly regarded by the staff at Legacy House in Wagga Wagga.

Bill was a great mentor for me personally and I will miss him very much.”

PP John Glassford

“Bill was so dedicated to the Rotary cause & supported many of its programs. One of my significant memories was his work at the early BINGO where he was so ‘adored’ by most of the players of those times and was present at most of the monthly Bingo events.  He was also very passionate in his fund-raising from Walk-a-thons that he organised around our local area.”

PP Grahame Miles.

“Bill lived & breathed Rotary, rarely missing a meeting.

It was in the Club’s second year that it was decided to run an Art Union & source donations to built two Aged Persons Units in Coolamon.  Although, thought to be a massive undertaking for a fledgling Club, the funds were raised, land donated by the Patterson family and the Coolamon Council organized building of the units.

Bill was elected as Club President 1976-77.   During his year he inducted ten new members.  Collected for the National Heart Appeal and did the first Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal. Now 36 years later the club still collects for this cause.

During that year, the Club arranged to send five young people to Sydney for a weeks holiday. Which was a completely new experience for our country kids.  In return, five Sydney children visited Coolamon for a week.

The plane trip was an added experience.

The Club’s first Overseas  Exchange student was sent to Canada.   Bill was always one for doing things for the kids.

In 1984, while Community Service Director of the Club, he researched and conducted the first Blue Light Disco for the Shire’s young people. This disco was held bi- monthly and continued for over 20 years. Any surplus funds raised through the Disco was put aside and utilized on the young people of the district.

Also during this year, he was a driving force in  compiling a Large Print Community Telephone book, for the area.

Conducted a Walk-a-thon to Raise sufficient funds to air-condition the Coolamon Pre-school.

During that year, Bill recruited the help of school children to walk the side of all Coolamon’s main access roads, picking up rubbish discarded by travelers. Over ten tons of rubbish was the result.

While able, Bill and Joan attended every District Conference.

As a Rotarian, Bill Innes instigated a lot and achieved a great deal. He will be sadly missed for his community involvement.”

PP Henk Hulsman.

Above: Bill left speechless on receiving his PHF Sapphire Pin with Joan Innes.

For Bill:

O flower of Scotland
When will we see your like again
That fought and died for
Your wee bit hill and glen
And stood against him
Proud Edward’s army
And sent him homeward
Tae think again

The hills are bare now
And autumn leaves lie thick and still
O’er land that is lost now
Which those so dearly held
And stood against him
Proud Edward’s army
And sent him homeward
Tae think again

Those days are passed now
And in the past they must remain
But we can still rise now
And be the nation again
That stood against him
Proud Edward’s army
And sent him homeward
Tae think again

Bill will be laid to rest on Thursday 17th October at the Wagga Wagga Crematorium starting at 1.00 pm.  All Rotarians are invited to attend and support Joan and the family, please wear your dinner badge.

Dead Duck

A woman brought a very limp duck into a veterinary surgeon. As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird’s chest. After a moment or two, the vet shook his head and sadly said, “I’m sorry, your duck, Cuddles, has passed away.” The distressed woman wailed, “Are you sure?” “Yes, I am sure. Your duck is dead,” replied the vet.. “How can you be so sure?” she protested. “I mean you haven’t done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something.”

The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left the room. He returned a few minutes later with a black Labrador Retriever. As the duck’s owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck from top to bottom. He then looked up at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head. The vet patted the dog on the head and took it out of the room.

A few minutes later he returned with a cat. The cat jumped on the table and also delicately sniffed the bird from head to foot. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and strolled out of the room. The vet looked at the woman and said, “I’m sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100% certifiably, a dead duck.”

The vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys and produced a bill, which he handed to the woman.. The duck’s owner, still in shock, took the bill. “$150!” she cried, “$150 just to tell me my duck is dead!” The vet shrugged, “I’m sorry. If you had just taken my word for it, the bill would have been $20, but with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan, it’s now $150.”

One of the most enjoyable parts of being a Rotarian is the fact that there are over 34,000 Rotary Clubs in the world and wherever you go there is a Rotary Club nearby where you will always be welcome to join in their meetings.

This week  I am writing this from Surfers Paradise and made up a meeting at the Rotary Club of Surfers Paradise:

We had an excellent speaker talking about the Gold Coast Light Rail that will be operational in June 2014.  Not all the members present thought that this development should have gone ahead.

I was made very welcome by President Kirk Mason and we exchanged our club banners.

ROTARY INFORMATION

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS BRING THEIR VISION OF ROTARY TO THE TABLE

Evan Burrell, a member of the Rotary E-Club of Greater Sydney, New South Wales, Australia participated in Rotaract, RYLA, and Rotary’s Group Study Exchange.

How will you make room for the next generation of young professionals and volunteers in your clubs? We asked Rotaractors and young Rotarians to weigh in on how it should work and what it will take to turn today’s young leaders into tomorrow’s Rotary members.

Here’s an excerpt from the roundtable discussion.

What should older Rotary members understand about young people?

Alyssa Gapske, 22, Rotaract Club of Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA: A major difference is the way we connect. The greatest advantage of social media is that it allows us not only to share meeting and project details but also to communicate with clubs around the world. As a moderator of my club’s Facebook page, I see messages every week from clubs hoping to work with us, or community members interested in attending meetings or joining our club.

Evan Burrell, 32, Rotary E-Club of Greater Sydney, New South Wales, Australia; past Rotaractor, RYLA participant, and GSE team member: Our spirit of community service is no different from that of older generations; we just have different methods. We’re results-driven, we move quickly — some might think too quickly. We want to feel that our work has purpose when we participate in something, and we get frustrated when our ideas aren’t considered just because they’re unfamiliar.

CAUSES WORTH SUPPORTING

Hat Day is coming! Friday Oct 11 is the official date.

So what is it all about?

Hat Day is the fundraising event by Australian Rotary Health  to support research into Mental Health. We are trying to pinpoint the causes of mental health issues, and of course are looking at ways that best support those with mental health problems so they can lead normal, fruitful lives.

It is a very important issue. Health professionals tell us that one person in five will be a sufferer during their lifespan. This causes great strain on marriages, workplace environments and families. Depression often leads to tragic events.

We can and need to do something about this, and this is where Research comes in. The more we know, the more information we can gather, the better the chance to change the nature of this problem.

Your Australian Rotary Health is leading the way.

How can you be part of this?

We are asking each club to hold a Hat Day event.  Your club has an information kit that was sent out a little while ago.
Some clubs are holding a special fund raiser, such as a trivia night.
Others are wearing funny hats and doing a bucket drop on the busy shopping nights.
The local Milliners have swung in behind some clubs and are holding Hat Day parades.
Maybe you could have a Silly Hat competition at your meeting that week and charge each member $5 for entering or not entering.
The list of possibilities is endless.

On a business level, why not have a Hat Day at work, just as we participate in the “Worlds Biggest Morning Tea” for Cancer. It is a fun thing to do and it will generate interest in the community as well as brighten up the work week.

What ever you decide, we do ask that you get behind your club in the spirit of the event and help us help some of these sufferers.

Keep well,

PDG John Egan

THE BILLABONG

The traditional House of Friendship has been renamed The Billabong for Sydney 2014.  A Billabong is an aboriginal name for a waterhole around which meetings would often be held.  The 2014 Billabong will be located in the grounds of the Sydney Showground, part of Sydney Olympic Park at Homebush. Located in The Dome (a spectacular timber structure and the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere) and Exhibition Halls 2, 3 and 4.  The Billabong will have over 14,000 square metres of display space, and will be the place to meet old and new acquaintances. See exhibits or displays of Rotary work from all over the world, discuss projects and learn of the many opportunities provided to Rotarians.

Approximately one half of the Billabong will be dedicated to the work of Rotary International and Rotary clubs where you can pick up great ideas for new projects for your club and learn of the assistance Rotary International can provide to support this work.  The other half of the Billabong will illustrate more great Rotary work and show many aspects of Australia and its Rotary clubs.

The Billabong will also feature examples of our unique Australian fauna and you will be able to shop for great Rotary jewellery, clothing and souvenirs. There will also be the opportunity to sample a variety of excellent Australian wines.

Rest your tired feet and enjoy a wide choice of food and great Australian entertainment.

The Billabong will be where the world of Rotary International comes together!

If you are interested in participating in The Billabong as an Exhibitor or Sponsor please contact PDG Harold Sharp * as soon as possible for information on opportunities.

Zimbabwe Massacre: Elephants poisoned with cyanide

By Gill Staden, eTN Africa | Sep 22, 2013

There has been so much in the news during the week about the death of at least 69 elephants in Hwange National Park after being poisoned with cyanide. The cyanide had been mixed with salt and placed near a waterhole.  The poachers have been arrested and are now in cells awaiting trial. According to one report they were given the cyanide by a South African businessman.

A big delegation of Ministers from the Zimbabwe government went to take a look at the damage. They all agreed that, if this type of incident is to be stopped, the villagers living around the park have to benefit from it. They also called for stiffer penalties for poachers.

A South African businessman is believed to be behind the Hwange elephant poisonings. …

Police named him only as Ishmael and that he used a Chivu farmer and ivory buyer Farai Chitsa to distribute stocks of cyanide to local people in Pelandaba and Pumula areas of Tsholotsho. Chitsa was arrested when his truck became stuck in sands while collecting tusks from poachers. Two brothers – Sipho and Misheck Mafu – have also been arrested and have provided police and wildlife investigators with wide-ranging information.

Police revealed that the poachers would mix up a combination of cyanide, salt and water. This would then be poured onto salt licks at watering holes known to be frequented by elephants. At other watering holes the poachers would dig holes and place containers containing the deadly mixture into the holes.

The technique was so effective at killing elephants that when the poachers took police to the sites that had been contaminated there were bodies of elephants with small tusks still intact because it wasn’t worth the effort to take the tusks, The poachers were being paid as little as $700 for 9 tusks.

It was not just elephants that were killed by the cyanide but a wide range of other animals carcasses were found including buffalo, lions, vultures and jackals. …

Police Assistant Commissioner Micheck Mabunda is also calling for the establishment of aircraft patrols in the Hwange National Park. He notes that poachers in neighbouring Botswana will quickly disperse when their aircraft patrol flies overhead. However when those poachers enter Zimbabwe there is no threat of being discovered. He suggests that Pandematenga Border Post would be an ideal location to base an air based patrol from.

They should have placed the same salt in the poachers prison food! I would have been pleased to hand it to them.

Poachers should be shot on sight!

I’m with you on this Chris – Poachers should be shot. On the other hand isn’t that too kind? Maybe they should be given cyanide – makes for a more painful death.

AMAZING and impressive how quickly Zimbabwe caught, processed and sentenced these ‘cyanide poachers’ – ( less than a month ) – BRAVO ZIMBABWE !
”A Zimbabwe court on Wednesday sentenced three poachers to at least 15 years in prison each for poisoning and killing 81 elephants, state radio reported.
A provincial magistrate sentenced 25-year-old Diyane Tshuma to 16 years in prison for poisoning elephants with cyanide at in Hwange National Park, in the west of Zimbabwe, Spot FM reported.
His co-accused Robert Maphosa, 42, and Thabani Zondo, 24, were each sentenced to 15 years.”

2) Promote support for these policies and programs while also soliciting suggestions for improvements and innovations.

3) Inform the RI Board of successful, zone-level program developments that it may want to consider for further development.

4) Inspire, motivate, and inform governors for leadership.

5) Provide a forum for learning, discussion, and inspiration, which will engender fellowship and a team spirit among all participants.

Participants attendance at each institute is limited to past, current, and incoming RI officers and their guests, though others may be invited by the conveners or may attend at the request of the president or the general secretary.

Pain

A married couple went to the hospital to have their baby delivered.

Upon their arrival, the doctor said he had invented a new machine that would transfer a portion of the mothers pain to the baby’s father. He asked if they were willing to try it out. they were both very much in favor of it.

The doctor set the pain transfer to 10%, for starters, explaining that even 10% was probably more pain the
father had ever experienced before. However, as the labor progressed, the husband felt fine and asked the doctor to go ahead and “kick it up a notch.”

The doctor then adjusted the machine to 20% pain transfer. The husband still feeling fine. The doctor checked the husband’s blood pressure and was amazed at how well he was doing at this point, they decided to try for 50%. the husband continued to feel quite well.

Since the pain transfer was obviously helping out the  wife considerably, the husband encouraged the doctor to transfer ALL the pain to him.

The wife delivered a healthy baby boy with virtually no pain. She and her husband were ecstatic. When they got home, the mail man was dead on the porch.

INDIAN PHILANTHROPIST BOOSTS ROTARY’S PUSH TO END POLIO WITH NEW US$1 MILLION GIFT

Indian philanthropist and businesswoman Rajashree Birla has announced a new gift of US$1 million to Rotary to help eradicate polio. The gift brings her total contributions to the Rotary effort to more than $7.2 million.

What’s more, this gift will be matched two-for-one by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, resulting in $3 million in new funding for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). Rotary is a leading partner in the GPEI, especially in advocating government and donor support, fundraising, and building public awareness. Through the End Polio Now: Make History Today fundraising campaign, the Gates Foundation is matching two-for-one every new dollar Rotary commits to polio eradication, up to $35 million per year, from 2013 through 2018.

“Mrs. Birla’s generous gift is deeply appreciated and could not have come at a more opportune time in our fight to end polio once and for all,” says Ashok Mahajan, a former Rotary Foundation trustee and close friend of the Birla family. “Her generosity no doubt will inspire other private donors to step up and help Rotary take full advantage of our innovative partnership with the Gates Foundation.”

Birla’s gift underscores India’s commitment to remain polio free. India — which some experts believed would be the last nation to beat polio — hasn’t recorded a case of the disease since January 2011. Only Nigeria, Pakistan, and Afghanistan remain on the list of countries where the wild poliovirus has never been stopped. India’s nearly 3,200 Rotary clubs have been instrumental in supporting National Immunization Days, massive initiatives that reach nearly 175 million children under age 5 with the oral polio vaccine.

“Thanks to the efforts of Rotary and its partners — including India’s Health Ministry, WHO [World Health Organization], UNICEF, CDC [U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention], the Gates Foundation, and other organizations — India continues to be free of polio,” says Birla, whose son, Kumar Mangalam Birla, has transformed the Aditya Birla Group into a Fortune 500 global conglomerate. “Now we owe it to humanity to see that Nigeria, Afghanistan, and Pakistan also become polio free in the near future.”

G ‘ day

Just received my Rotary Down Under September issue.
There is a small article on the new Rotary logos.
“To implement this change across our entire region (Australia), and to serve Rotary’s public image well will require all clubs and Districts to dedicate time and resources to get the Rotary logo updated across all your communication channels.”
I don’t mind the new look with the Rotary name beside the wheel.  I do not like the colour in yellow too washed out in my opinion.  What I do not like is that we have the following areas that we may have to change, or do they, anyone know?
YIR John Glassford
Hi John
RI has stated that Lapel pins and badges will remain unchanged. and has clearly stated that existing letterhead and business cards should be used up before changing.
In my view, banners,, bells, permanent signs and the like do not have to be changed, and many would already comply with one of the permissible alternatives anyway.
I have run this position by a high level individual on the Rotary Staff, and was told that this is a good outline of what he called called a deplete and replenish philosophy. I would not change anything of a permanent nature and would formally challenge anyone who directs otherwise.
In general, this would seem to be another example of RI’s shift towards centralized control and top down management; but unlike the very real restrictions imposed by TRF under Future Vision, there seems to be a good deal of local discretion allowed for the graphics change.  I hope this helps.
Regards,
Bill Phillips

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT RON BURTON:

In Foz do Iguaçu, Parana, Brazil.

Paul Harris famously wrote, “This is a changing world: we must be prepared to change with it. The story of Rotary will have to be written again and again.” While we will never know what Rotarian Paul would have thought of the Internet Age, I think I do know what he would have said about the idea of a Rotary website: that not only should we have one, but that it should be the best possible – keeping up with advances in technology, and always responding to the needs of Rotarians.

I’m proud to announce that after a redesign that has taken two years from concept to completion, the new Rotary.org is now live and available to Rotarians and Internet users everywhere. It contains many of the features you’ve asked for, most notably a much improved search function and navigation, new ways to connect with your fellow Rotarians around the world, and a more personalized experience that will connect you with the information that’s interesting to you.

ALERTS TO THREATS IN 2013 EUROPE

From JOHN CLEESE

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent events in Syria and have therefore raised their security level from “Miffed” to “Peeved.” Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to “Irritated” or even “A Bit Cross.” The English have not been “A Bit Cross” since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from “Tiresome” to “A Bloody Nuisance.” The last time the British issued a “Bloody Nuisance” warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots have raised their threat level from “Pissed Off” to “Let’s get the Bastards.” They don’t have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from “Run” to “Hide.” The only two higher levels in France are “Collaborate” and “Surrender.” The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France ‘s white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country’s military capability.

Italy has increased the alert level from “Shout Loudly and Excitedly” to “Elaborate Military Posturing.” Two more levels remain: “Ineffective Combat Operations” and “Change Sides.”

The Germans have increased their alert state from “Disdainful Arrogance” to “Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs.” They also have two higher levels: “Invade a Neighbour” and “Lose.”

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels ..

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from “No worries” to “She’ll be right, Mate.” Two more escalation levels remain: “Crikey! I think we’ll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!” and “The barbie is cancelled.” So far no situation has ever warranted use of the last final escalation level.

Regards,
John Cleese ,

And as a final thought – Greece is collapsing, the Iranians are getting aggressive, and Rome is in disarray. Welcome back to 430 BC.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION RECEIVES COVETED 4-STAR RATING FROM CHARITY NAVIGATOR

The Rotary Foundation earned a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, the largest and most prestigious independent evaluator of non-profits in the United States.

The 4-star rating, the highest that Charity Navigator awards, recognizes sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency. Charity Navigator evaluates thousands of non-profits each year, and only one of four earns 4 stars.

This year’s top distinction marks the Foundation’s sixth straight, placing it in the top 3 percent of U.S.-based charities. In a letter to the Foundation, Ken Berger, the president of Charity Navigator, wrote, “This ‘exceptional’ designation differentiates The Rotary Foundation from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust.”

EMPOWERMENT OF WAR-AFFECTED WOMEN

EMPOWERMENT OF WAR-AFFECTED WOMEN THROUGH PROMOTION OF SAVINGS.

Sixty(60) women who were affected by the war in the North have formed three savings groups at Thoddiyadi Visvamadu. They started functioning in a small way by depositing Rs.5/- per week by each member and this savings were utilized to give small loans to the members. They have a bank account and maintain proper accounts of their transactions. They made a request to our Club to support them with some financial assistance. The Club took action promptly with a non – profit, charitable organization based in the US called International Medical Health Organization (IMHO) and obtained Rs.150,000/- as a financial support to these three savings groups. Each of them was given Rs.50,000/-. They have made use of this money to lend Rs.10,000/- to each member in the three clubs. Fifteen members have now found self-employment opportunities with these small loans. They are engaged in activities such as poultry keeping, goat raring, dairy farming and cultivation.

ROTI Discussion below;

Hello Folks,
There is a quote that I have always appreciated regarding friendship … it applies to “fellowship,” too. Friendship and/or fellowship is a process of “mutual need fulfilment.” It seems to me that much of the R.I. effort has been to find members who will satisfy Rotary’s needs: contribute, participate in projects, attend meetings, etc, etc … But we do little to discover and then meet the needs of both existing and prospective members. Bickering about the various topics which has been endemic here and elsewhere is not attractive.
Emphasizing dissatisfaction with priorities is not attractive. Excessive criticism of leadership is not attractive. Asking for continuing donations without clarity on the benefits for making them is not attractive. Then, we wonder why our membership has been “flat” for many years … we recruit enough people to replace those we lose.
We live in a competitive market place of philanthropic organizations: Lions, Kiwanis, Elks, Moose, etc. etc. What do we do to be more attractive than our competitors? If we emphasize the needs, desires and interests of our existing and prospective members, then our membership will not only grow but flourish. Many clubs are working things like the “fifth test,” “is it fun?” and the like. Basically this is the result of guessing what might work.
Why not do a survey, as in an internal marketing process, to determine the needs that keep members involved? Speaking as a “rule of 85 Rotarian, Rotary today is not yo’ Daddy’s Rotary … the world has changed, Rotary has changed and the reasons why members remain members or seek membership have changed. Do we know anything about that? Likely, it will be different club by club, district by district or even approaches at the Evanston level. Systematic self-analysis will work much better than groping guess-work.
Rotary has needs. Members have needs. Fulfilment must be mutual and satisfactory. Otherwise, our crisis will grow. As friends, we must fulfil each other’s needs or the friendships fade and fail. The relationship between Rotary and its members have the same interactive relationship.
There. I said it. (But then, I’ve said it before.)
