Welcome Dick as our president for 2013-3014. We are looking forward to your year as our president.
Dick would like to see as many members as possible attend the Junee Rotary Club change over this Sunday at 12 midday at the Junee Ex Services Club so far we have 3 members attending.
Our first meeting for 2013-3014 is next Monday night 8th July, and it will be an enjoyable night and Dick would like to see as many members attend as possible as we will be discussing Dick’s goals and plans for the year in Rotary. This is an important night for all of us to have a say on what we aim to achieve this year. Also on Monday night we are promised an informative and very interesting talk by Ted Hutcheon on his life.
On Monday July 15th we are scheduled for our first board meeting and in lieu of the normal business meeting that night we would like to support the Lions Club meeting on the Wednesday night see below. Your input will be welcome next Monday night on this proposal.
Wednesday July 17th the Lions Club of Coolamon have invited us to attend their meeting with Kylie Dunstan NBN Readiness Project Coordinator from Regional Development Australia. Kylie will be talking on the NBN roll out. This promises to be an important meeting not to be missed on what the NBN will mean for the Shire of Coolamon.
Let us hit the ground running and build on the great work done by IPP Paul Weston and his team.
JULY IS ROTARY’S NEW YEAR MONTH.
CHANGE OVER MEETING MONDAY 1st JULY
That time of year again when we change our president and other board positions. This keeps us all motivated and does not allow us to become stagnant or stale in our approach to why we are Rotarians. This year we see Dick Jennings take the helm of our club and with a new board. To celebrate this change we have a change over dinner to induct our new president and board members. It is also a night to celebrate the previous year under IPP Paul Weston.
We had a fantastic evening of fellowship, good food and friendship.
Paul had arranged entertainment from the Riverina Conservatorium of Music , these young musicians did a wonderful job and were very much appreciated by all who attended. All in all we had 80 Rotarians and their guests enjoy the evening. Included in these were:
District Governor Geoff Tancred and Bettye Tancred, it was DG Geoff’s first official engagement as our DG for D9700 and we feel honoured that Geoff and Bettye came all the way from Orange to grace our special evening, thank you Geoff and Bettye. Also in attendance was our Federal Member of Parliament Michael McCormack MP. Our Coolamon Shire Mayor John Seymour and Margaret Seymour also attended and John proposed a toast to Rotary International.
Other notable attendees included PDG Fred Loneragan, PDG John Egan and AG Alan Sharp. Several Rotary clubs supported our evening including Junee, Narrandera, Wagga Wagga Kooringal, Wagga Wagga Sunrise, Wollundry Wagga Wagga and South Wagga Wagga. Not to forget the Coolamon Lions Club and the Coolamon Men’s Shed . Thanks to all of you.
Ray Wall from the Coolamon and Ganmain Hospital was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow by DG Geoff Tancred. Ray leaves us for Tasmania soon and we all wish Ray the very best in his new life and he will be missed by all in the Coolamon Shire. Also we presented two Vocational Service Awards to Claire Munro and Tony Donohue for their work in our Shire.
PDG Fred Loneragan read the Rotary 4 Way Test with explanations on how this test came into being and why it means so much for Rotarians around the world. Fred also presented a framed copy of the 4 Way Test to our member in Canberra Michael McCormack to put on his office wall.
IPP Paul Weston presented his report on the past Rotary year and reflected on a most successful year for this club. We raised $14,600 which went to many local organisations and included $6,000 to the Coolamon Men’s Shed.
The proceedings were chaired by Mark Reardon who did a great job keeping the night moving along, thanks Mark and to all of our members who helped with the night. A special thanks to the Ganmain Craft Shop and Ann Brill for doing such a great job on our banners all 211 of them.

Two Children
Two children were in a doctor’s waiting room.
The little girl was softly sobbing.
“Why are you crying?” asked the little boy.
“I’m here for a blood test, and they’re going to cut my finger,” said the girl.
When he heard this, the little boy started to cry.
“Why are you crying?” asked the girl.
The boy looked at her worriedly and said,
“I’m here for a urine test.”
Gun Powder
A tough old cowboy from South Texas counselled his granddaughter that if she wanted to live a long life, the secret was to sprinkle a pinch of gun powder on her oatmeal every morning.
The granddaughter did this religiously to the age of 103 when she died. She left behind 14 children, 30 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, 25 great-great-grandchildren, and a fifteen-foot hole where the crematorium used to be.
The Parachute
There were five people aboard an air plane having engine trouble getting ready to crash, however, there were only four parachutes. Everyone wondered what should be done to determine who should get the parachutes.
One person said that he was the smartest thing that hit the face of the Earth, and that he was too smart to die. So, he took one of the parachutes and jumped out of the aircraft. The second person said that she was too important to die, she had children and a family to take care of, and they depended on her to care for them. So, she took one of the parachutes and jumped out of the aircraft.
The third person said that he was too important to die because his family depended on him for survival. He was the head of household and the sole bread winner. So, he took one of the parachutes and jumped out of the aircraft. Finally, there were only two people left, and one parachute. One person was a 12 year old boy, and the other was a 65 year old man. The old man said, “Well son, I have lived a good life, and you are too young to die, you have a long life ahead of you. So, you take the last parachute. The boy asked, “Why, Sir?” The old man said, “Well, there is only one parachute left.”
The little lad said, “Sir there are really two parachutes left.” The old gentlemen asked, excitedly, “Yeah? How?” “Well,” replied the boy, “you know that guy who thought he was the smartest and greatest thing that hit the face of the Earth?
He grabbed my backpack.”

Gates Foundation joins with Rotary to boost polio endgame support
Jeff Raikes, chief executive officer of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, addresses Rotarians during the recent RI Convention in Lisbon.
An announcement at the Rotary International Convention in Lisbon, Portugal, set the stage for a bold new chapter in the partnership between Rotary and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in the campaign for polio eradication.
“Going forward, the Gates Foundation will match two-to-one, up to US$35 million per year, every dollar Rotary commits to reduce the funding shortfall for polio eradication through 2018,” said Jeff Raikes, the foundation’s chief executive officer, in a pre-recorded video address shown during the convention’s plenary session on 25 June. “If fully realized, the value of this new partnership with Rotary is more than $500 million. In this way, your contributions to polio will work twice as hard.”
The joint effort, called End Polio Now – Make History Today, comes during a critical phase for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative . The estimated cost of the initiative’s 2013-18 Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan is $5.5 billion. Funding commitments , announced at the Global Vaccine Summit in April, total $4 billion. Unless the $1.5 billion funding gap is met, immunization levels in polio-affected countries will decrease. And if polio is allowed to rebound, within a decade, more than 200,000 children worldwide could be paralysed every year.

ROMAC ROTARY OCEANIA MEDICAL AID for CHILDREN
Mission Statement
To provide medical treatment for children from developing countries in the form of life saving and/or dignity restoring surgery not accessible to them in their home country.
Bettye Tancred the wife of our District Governor Geoff Tancred has chosen ROMAC as the cause for their year in office. This is a most worthy cause and the proceeds of our raffle on our change over dinner went to ROMAC.
Martin came to Auckland early in the New Year from the small island of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea. He and his mother Linda travelled by truck over bumpy dirt roads to the ferry terminal, by banana boat to Buka Island, by plane from Buka Town to Port Moresby before boarding a flight to Brisbane.
After spending 5 hours in a transit lounge in Brisbane they boarded a flight to Auckland and arrived here after midnight, more than 24 hrs after leaving their home.
After only a couple of hours sleep Martin was admitted to Starship and the series of tests began. Overwhelming for anyone – let alone a child under two and his mother who didn’t speak English.
The following day Martin underwent brain and facial surgery. Following surgery, Martin and Linda were hosted by the local PNG community
Five weeks later, Martin he returned home to PNG – developmentally normal, happy and sociable.

SUNRISE CHANGE OVER DINNER IN WAGGA
This week we cancelled our regular meeting and decided to attend the Wagga Wagga Sunrise Rotary Club’s change over dinner. In all 9 of us represented Coolamon at the dinner held at the Wagga Wagga Country Club. It was an excellent evening with great food and even better fellowship.
There were three Paul Harris Awards and a new president in Peter Gissing. Looks like a good year coming up for Sunrise.
However the highlight of the night was the presentation of the Rotary International Service Above Self Award to PDG Fred Loneragan. This is the highest award given to a Rotarian and only 150 are awarded annually by the RI President. There have only been 5 SAS recipients in District 9700 since the inception of the award in 1991. Congratulations Fred well deserved mate!

Doctor was addressing a large audience: “The material we put into our stomachs is enough to have killed most of us sitting here, years ago. Red meat is awful. Soft drinks corrode your stomach lining.. Chinese food is loaded with MSG. High fat diets can be disastrous, and none of us realizes the long- term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water.
But there is one thing that is the most dangerous of all and we all have, or will, eat it. Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?”
After several seconds of quiet, a 75-year-old man in the front row raised his hand, and softly said, “Wedding Cake.”

The confused girl returned to her mother and said, “Mom, how is it possible that you told me the human race was created by God, and Dad said they developed from monkeys?”
The mother answered, “Well, dear, it is very simple. I told you about my side of the family and your father told you about his.”

It was a blondes first day at the office. Her first task was to go out for coffee.
Eager to prove her worth to her new bosses, she grabbed a large thermos and hurried to the nearby coffee shop.
She held up the thermos so that the counterman could view it, and she asked, “Is this big enough to hold six cups of coffee?”
The counterman looked at the thermos and replied, “Yes. It looks like about six cups to me.”
“Oh good!” the blonde sighed in relief. “Give me three regular, one black, and two decaf.”

Playful Barsilinga plays up for the camera in this photo taken last week. Having been in our care since March 2012, this little bull arrived at just 2 weeks old after his mother suffered a horrific death following a poaching attack.
Very vulnerable and frightened upon being rescued, Barsilinga was luckily in a very good condition physically and continues to thrive at the Nairobi Nursery.

The Rotary world comes to Lisbon for the opening of the 2013 convention
Several centuries ago, Portuguese explorers set sail from Lisbon to explore the world over the seas.
On Sunday, the world, or at least representative parts of it, came to Lisbon, as Rotarians from more than 225 countries and geographic areas gathered for the opening plenary session of the 2013 Rotary International Convention, Lisbon: A Harbour for Peace.
Peace took centre stage all day. During his opening remarks, RI President Sakuji Tanaka, who selected Peace Through Service as this year’s RI theme, shared how he came to make a connection between peace and service. He recalled that he was still very young when he heard the radio broadcast by Japanese Emperor Hirohito announcing the end of World War II.
