Why did you join Rotary?  So many good reasons Service Above Self covers just about all the avenues we can serve within Rotary.  I chose international service but sometimes many other reasons and events go to confirm that there is no better organisation to belong to.  This week many Rotarian friends joined to present some of the proceeds from the Rotary Mount Kenya ANZAC Day 2015 Climb to Legacy Australia.  Here are a few photos from the event held at Legacy House in Wagga Wagga on Friday.

MEETING MONDAY AUGUST 24th. 2015

Last night we had many guests too numerous to list here however notable guests were DG Gary Roberts and Marilyn Roberts with PDG John Egan and Maria Egan attending. The reason to hear Grahame Miles talk on Liverpool and the musicians that Liverpool produced.

Grahame and Sharon Miles visited Liverpool and other parts of the UK recently and came back with a wonderful talk on their visit to Liverpool and in particular to the Cavern.

The first concert by the Beatles at The Cavern Club, over a lunchtime on 9th February 1961 – 54 years ago – was hardly an auspicious affair.

Grahame spoke at length of the artists that Liverpool produced in the 60’s and we even sang along to some of the songs.  Liverpool was heavily bombed during WWII and the spirit of the people was lifted by music and some great music.

Grahame encouraged us all to visit Liverpool and the many museum there dedicated to that time when Cilla Black and The Beatles reigned supreme.   Grahame finished his talk with a tribute to the late Cilla Black.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

On the first day, God created the dog and said, “Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.”

The dog said, “That’s a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I’ll give you back the other ten?”

So God agreed……

On the second day, God created the monkey and said, “Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I’ll give you a twenty-year life span.”

The monkey said, “Monkey tricks for twenty years? That’s a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?”

And God agreed……

On the third day, God created the cow and said, “You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer’s family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years.”

The cow said, “That’s kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I’ll give back the other forty?”

And God agreed again…… On the fourth day, God created humans and said, “Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I’ll give you twenty years.”

But the human said, “Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?”

“Okay,” said God. “You asked for it.”

So that is why for our first twenty years, we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.

Life has now been explained to you.

Sid Clarke generously offered to donate an excellent pewter mug, engraved, to new members who join this year. So, let’s keep a lookout for new members who can commit to community service and in return enrich their life. I have been asked to explain what is a Paul Harris Fellow?  This information comes from our neighbouring District 9710 centered around Canberra.

What is a Paul Harris Fellow?

When $US 1,000 is contributed to The Rotary Foundation, a request can be made for an individual to be recognised as a Paul Harris Fellow; that person can be a Rotarian or a member of the community who is not a Rotarian.

Some of the misconceptions or misunderstanding surrounding a Paul Harris Fellow are:

• There is no such thing as a Paul Harris Fellowship, and it is not an award; it is simply recognition. When a Club contributes $US 1000 to The Rotary Foundation, the Club sets its own criteria for naming a Paul Harris Fellow. Usually this is done to recognise an outstanding commitment to the Club or the community.
• A personal contribution of $US1000 and the subsequent recognition of a Paul Harris Fellow should be encouraged not criticised; it is a donation to The Rotary Foundation, Rotary’s own charity and, therefore, every Rotarian’s own charity.
• Recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow was never intended to be an award and certainly is not Rotary International’s highest award, although it is an honour to be named a Paul Harris Fellow.
• Honorary Membership is the highest distinction that a Club may bestow on a Rotarian and should only be bestowed in exceptional cases for meritorious service in the furtherance of Rotary ideals and for support of the Rotary cause.
• Club Presidents may also award one Avenues of Service Citation each year to a Club Rotarian.
• The highest award an individual Rotarian can receive is the Service Above Self Award; only a maximum of 150 are awarded each year by the Board of Rotary International.
• Being named a Paul Harris Fellow is not unique. There are over 1.2 million Paul Harris Fellows worldwide.

This last Friday Lion AID put on a concert in Trafalgar Square and Saint Pancras Church in London.  Part of the night included a video message from Dr Jane Goodall and John Glassford Chair RAGES.

Tonight our District Governor Gary Roberts inducted our newest member to our club Daryl Breust.  Daryl  is a builder and was accompanied by his wife Jan Breust.  A great start to our meeting with the DG.

DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S VISIT

Our guests tonight DG Gary Roberts, Marilyn Roberts, Marilyn Jennings, Helen Lewis, Susan Glassford, Maureen Hulsman, Jan Breust, Heather McKinley, Jan Nulty and Clare Munro.  Together with 14 of our members.

Tonight we had the pleasure of the visit of District Governor District 9700 Gary Roberts and his wife Marilyn Roberts on the annual visit of our Governor.   DG Gary started his Rotary journey in 1981 when he joined the Rotary Club of Kooringal.  Gary went onto create a new club in Wagga Wagga called WW Murrumbidgee where he is still a member.

DG Gary outlined his goals for his year as Governor including:

•  Be a gift to the world in service above self and do great things.
• Institute peace in society as Rotary’s first peace town in the world Coolamon has led the way.
• Keep Rotary in the mind of the people of Coolamon by leaving a strong club for the future generations of Coolamon.
• Make our club THE club/association that the people of Coolamon want to join.
• Attend the D9700 Conference in Wagga Wagga 22nd – 24th April 2016.
• Walk the streets of Coolamon and invite interested people to join us.
• Support our Foundation.

As with all positions such as being a District Governor there is always a strong person behind the man/woman.  In this case it is Marilyn Roberts who spoke on the Rotary Foundation and Marilyn spoke passionately about maternal and child health one of the six areas of focus for our work around the world with the Rotary Foundation.

Marilyn asked us to join her in supporting the great work of the Foundation in this area where:

• 30,000 women die each year in Africa through child birth.

Marilyn went on to outline how we can support our Foundation:

1. Honouring partners behind the member with a Paul Harris Fellowship.
2. Become a Centurion with an annual donation of $100.
3. Attend a fund raising in Wagga Wagga on 12th November.

Wayne thanked Gary and Marilyn and went on to remind members that next week we have Grahame  Miles as our guest speaker on Liverpool and the Beatles.

Cool Grass Brunch Saturday 12th September volunteers wanted to man the caravan expected 50 customers.

ON this Friday at the Legacy Building in Wagga Wagga the Mount Kenya 2015 ANZAC Day team is presenting a cheque for $12,760 to the Lachlan Branch of Legacy. Time 2.00 pm and  you are all welcome to join us.

Proudly showing off his newly-leased downtown apartment to a couple of friends late one night, a drunk Maori led the way to his bedroom where there was a big brass gong hanging on the wall.

‘What’s that big brass gong for?’ one of the friend’s asked.

‘Issss nod a gong. Issss a talking Australian clock’ he drunkenly replied.

‘A talking Australian clock – seriously?’

‘Yup.’ ‘Hmmm (hic).’

‘How’s it work?’ the second friend asked, squinting at it.

‘Just watch’ he said. He picked up a hammer, gave the gong an ‘ear-shattering bash’ and stepped back.

His three mates stood looking at one another for a moment in astounded silence.

Suddenly, an Australian voice from the other side of the wall screamed, ‘For goodness sake, you stupid Kiwi It’s ten past three in the morning !!!’

African rhinoceros are to be flown to Australia to save them from extinction.

Secure breeding herds will be established in the Outback later this year to make sure the heavily poached species survive.

The group behind the ambitious plan – The Australian Rhino Project (ARP) – said it hoped to ensure the survival of the heavily poached species by creating secure breeding herds in the country.

African rhino currently face a relentless onslaught from organised poaching syndicates armed with high powered rifles and night vision equipment after their horn.

Following on Marilyn Robert’s talk last night on our Foundation I would like to let our members new old and thinking of joining us that our Club Coolamon has raised a large amount of funds that we sent to our Foundation around $25,000 following the Mount Kilimanjaro Climb in 2007.  This money was returned to us as a matching grant for the Medical Care Clinic in Hout Bay, Cape Town South Africa.

This clinic known as Coolamon,on House saves lives each and every day through their programme Operation Medical Hope.  It is here that maternal health and child  care are front and centre with their work in the prevention of the transmission of the HIV virus from mother to child.  This among many programmes they have for the population of the township in Hout Bay.  Our small club has pulled it’s  weight for our Foundation and enjoyed the returns.

AUGUST IS ROTARY MEMBERSHIP MONTH

MEETING MONDAY AUGUST 10th. 2015

Our guest tonight was Daryl Breust attending his last meeting as a potential member of our club.  The Board has extended an invitation to Daryl to join our club.

Tonight we had a fellowship meeting followed by the August Board meeting.  Tonight it was the turn of Don Dyce our President Elect to give a 10 minute summary of his life to date.

Don Dyce has had a full and varied life however his love is farming and that is what he has been doing for many years.  Don has many old friends in the club going back to school in Coolamon and beyond.  His family settled in the Coolamon area in 1896.  Don has three children by his first wife.

Don is an enterprising man and started his journey by raising a few pigs and on sale were enough to get him started in real estate in Wagga.  He has been an artist and a writer and then went back to the land on the retirement of his father.  Don purchased the next door property from PP Bill Innes, now passed on,  so Don’s connections ot Coolamon Rotary go back a long way and we look forward to his year as our President 2016-2017.

I got to know Don a whole lot better by climbing Mount Kenya with him.  It is here he was called “BP” the quiet achiever and that he is.  Don seen below leading the Rotary team up Mount Kenya to the summit of Point Lenana.

So far we have raised around $45,000 from the climb for our beneficiaries including Legacy Australia.

Next Monday night we have the annual visit of our District Governor and his wife.  DG Gary Roberts and Marilyn Roberts will be with us from 5.30 pm for the Executive, 6.00 pm with the full Board and 6.30 pm for fellowship and to meet all of our members and their partners.

DG Gary will be our speaker for the night.  Smart casual is the go, ties if you want.  Please join us to hear what Rotary International and our District 9700 is doing this Rotary year.

A funeral procession pulled into a cemetery. Several carloads of family members followed a black truck towing a boat with a coffin in it.
A passer-by remarked, “That guy must have been a very avid fisherman.”
“Oh, he still is,” remarked one of the mourners. As a matter of fact, he’s headed off to the lake as soon as we bury his wife.”

Africa goes one year without a case of polio

Just a few days from now, on 11 August, we will mark a tremendous milestone: one full year without a single case of polio caused by wild poliovirus in Africa.

The magnitude of this achievement can hardly be overstated. A polio-free Africa has been within sight, so near and yet so far, for over a decade. The hard work and commitment that have brought us to this point have been nothing short of heroic. Tens of thousands of health workers reached hundreds of millions of children with vaccine, in some of the most difficult conditions imaginable. Together, we have done what once seemed impossible: We have stopped polio in Africa.

Yet this progress, momentous as it is, is still fragile. As long as polio exists in the two remaining endemic countries of Pakistan and Afghanistan, the virus still has the potential to spread and to spark new outbreaks. Now, more than ever, we need the power of all of Rotary to carry us through to the end: not just a polio-free Africa, but a polio-free world.

Wherever you live, whether your country has just conquered polio or has been polio-free for decades, we need your voice, and your help. I ask all of you to read and use the materials in thistool kit to find ways to raise awareness in your community, and beyond. We need every Rotarian, in every Rotary club, to be talking about polio: making sure that media outlets report on our progress and our elected officials see polio eradication as a global priority. Your grassroots work helps drive the increased media coverage we have seen in the past year, which in turn drives global backing of our work to eradicate polio. Together, we will keep polio front and center in our communities and on our national agendas, keeping up the energy and the momentum that will push us through to the finish.

The battle in Africa has, for the moment, been won, but we need the strength of every Rotarian to help us win the war. Together, we will End Polio Now and truly Be a Gift to the World.

The girls were alone. Their families were dead, or gone, or lost in the broken landscape of southern Sudan. They had nowhere to turn, and no one to turn to. Some lived in the market, others in the cemetery. When Cathy Groenendijk saw them, she couldn’t help herself. She offered them tea, then some food, then a place to sleep in her guesthouse.

“In the morning, we would sit together and talk about what had happened the night before,” Groenendijk remembers. “And what I heard I could not believe. I could not believe it.”

One girl’s father had died, and after the funeral, she never saw her mother again. She was living on the streets with some other kids when four men started chasing them. The other girls were faster. She fell behind and was caught and raped by all four men. Groenendijk knew a doctor who repaired the physical damage, saving her life.

Ian H.S. Riseley, of the Rotary Club of Sandringham, Victoria, Australia, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International in 2017-18. He will become the president-nominee on 1 October if no other candidates challenge him.

Riseley says that meaningful partnerships with corporations and other organizations are crucial to Rotary’s future.

“We have the programs and personnel and others have available resources,” says Riseley. “Doing good in the world is everyone’s goal. We must learn from the experience of the polio eradication program to maximize our public awareness exposure for future partnerships.”

MEETING MONDAY AUGUST 3rd. 2015

Tonight we had the pleasure of a visit from Past Assistant Governor Alan Sharp, Group 5 on Rotary protocols and avenues to serve Rotary.  We had several visitors including Daryl Breust and Helen Lewis.

President Wayne Lewis opened the meeting and welcomed everyone present.  Wayne asked for all members to look at getting their Food Handling Certificate.   This can be done on line:

PP Dick Jennings reported on the trailer of items for the container going to Kenya for Project Hope which Christine Atkinson was supporting.  Dick thanked all for their contributions and told us that a 6′ x 4′ trailer and crate was filled and sent to Bathurst.  Special thanks to Dave McKinley for his help.

COOLAMON ROTARY SUPPORTS PROJECT HOPE

Leonine Hodge and Fran and Emma Atkinson, sisters of the late Christine Atkinson, passed through Coolamon this last week, taking with them Christine’s personal collection of household goods to donate to a charity close to Christine’s heart, Project Hope. Coolamon Rotary along with the Coolamon and Ganmain community pitched in with their help and generosity to support the children of Makindu, Kenya.

A trailer was loaded with the boxed goods and the Atkinson sisters continued on to Bathurst to deliver everything to a container that will be leaving this month for Makindu. Coolamon Rotary extend their appreciation to all who supported Christine’s project and were most impressed with the generosity shown.

Next week we have a normal meeting followed by a board meeting.  You are all welcome to attend both meetings even if you are not on the board.  An invitation to our new members is extended to come and see what we do at a board meeting.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

A burglar broke into a house one night. He shined his flashlight around, looking for valuables, and when he picked up a jewelry box to place in his sack, a strange, disembodied voice echoed from the dark saying, “Jesus is watching you.”He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his flashlight off, and froze. When he heard nothing more after a bit, he shook his head, then clicked the light on and began searching for more valuables. After just a few seconds, clear as a bell, he heard “Jesus is watching you.”

Freaked out, he shined his light around frantically, looking for the source of the voice. Finally, in the corner of the room, his flashlight beam came to rest on a parrot.

“Did you say that?” He hissed at the parrot.

“Yep,” the parrot confessed, then squawked, “I’m just trying to warn you.”  The burglar relaxed. “Warn me, huh? Who in the world are you?”

“Moses,” replied the bird.  “Moses?” The burglar laughed. “What kind of people would name a bird Moses?”

Suddenly, he felt a giant shadow materializing behind him.

“The kind of people who would name a Rottweiler Jesus.”

AUGUST MESSAGE 2015

In the 1930s, Ole Kirk Christiansen, a Danish carpenter, had a wooden sign hanging on his wall that read, Det bedste er ikke for godt: “Only the best is good enough.” Today, Christiansen is remembered as the inventor of Lego, the colorful plastic bricks beloved by children around the world. But in the early days of the Lego company, its signature product was a wooden duck – one built to the highest standards, out of aged beech, with three coats of clear varnish. Lego’s company history tells how Christiansen used his ducks to teach a lesson in quality to his son, Godtfred Kirk:

One evening, when I came into the office, I said to my father: “It’s been a good day today, Dad. We’ve earned a little more.” “Oh,” said Dad, “what do you mean?” “Well, I’ve just been to the station with two boxes of our toy ducks for the Danish Co op. Normally they get three coats of varnish, but since it’s for the Co-op, I only gave them two. So I saved the business a bit of money.” He looked at me in dismay. “Godtfred, fetch those boxes back. Unpack them and give the ducks another coat of varnish. You’re not going to bed until the work’s done – and you’ll do it all on your own.” There was no arguing with Dad. And it was a lesson for me about what quality meant.

Wow! The very very lovely, very talented, genius of a man – Russell Brand says no for our endangered species on our planet. What an honour. A comedian, an actor and most importantly a revolutionary speaker of our time. We absolutely adore Russell and can’t thank him enough for his wonderful words of truth and wisdom which are so rightly needed in the world of today.

This is akin to poaching but from wealthy men and women, mainly from the USA.  It has surprised me that not many people in the media know that big game hunting is still practiced in the world especially in many parts of Africa.  Cecil the lion and his counterparts are worth far more alive than as body parts.  The killing of this majestic lion may be the catalyst that brings hunting of these endangered species to a complete stop.  Let us hope so.

A live-size elephant sculpture made of ivory was unveiled at at the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport in Gaborone on 16 July 2015. The ivory came from the elephants that died naturally.

Controversial but effective.
