Coolamon Rotary Bulletin #1920-26

Meeting of 24 February

PP President Daryl welcomed 21 members and 21 guests, including 5 from Batlow, namely Margaret Isselmann, John Hides, PE Sam Hughes, Terry Peel & Terry Murphy.  Also attending was D9705 AG Elect Martin Brown from Tumbarumba.

Apologies from  Marianne, Henk, Lyn, Dave and Neil.

[The challenge for this week is: Can you spot the spelling errors in the story below? ]

John Bond was asked to introduce his guests Lauren, Meg and Geraldine from the Riverina Conservatorium of Music in Wagga Wagga. Lauren spoke on their desire to give a musical performance at a suitable venue in Batlow to help lift spirits of the community.

Each of the visiting Rotarians from the Snowy Valley Council area introduced themselves and gave a brief on their occupation/interests.  Finally Secretary Margaret Isselmann of Batlow Rotary, who can talk under water, so she claimed, gave a more lengthy talk, giving an explanation of why their President Greg couldn’t attend our meeting.  She also mentioned the support they have been offered from various organisations after the fires which almost devastated Batlow, such as the Belconnen Rotary Club visiting Batlow and Tumbarumba this weekend with their generous offer, the need for finding a landscape garden designer to help in planning a community garden, etc. She thanked Coolamon Club for their support and expressed her hope that we can work together on a suitable project to help Batlow recover from the recent bushfires.

Terry Peel had everyone’s attention.

Terry Peel then spoke briefly on the tradegy of loosing his house and sheds and part of their chestnut orchard to the fires. He commented that in loosing his sheds he also lost all his tools and equipment, which amounted to many thousand of dollars. As an aside, he also spoke on his long term dream of creating a tourist park at the entrance to Batlow. This could be one of the projects we assist Batlow with.

Daryl then presented Secretary Margaret with a certificate recognising the twinning of the Batlow and Coolamon Rotary Clubs.

Albert led a lively fine session, which was followed by a few cheeky cross fines. After the weekly raffle, which was won by John from the Batlow club, Dick auctioned off a “Regrow Batlow” T-shirt, which went to top-bidder Ian. Those sitting near Dick got quite an earful!

Coolamon Rotary Bulletin #1920-24

Meeting of 3 February

VP Daryl welcomed 22 members and special guest speakers Jackson, Tim & Peta Wykes, and several other guests (Jann B, Heather McK, Anne B, Maureen H, Maree J, Marilyn J, Susan G, Fiona P and Chez).

Apologies from  John B, Bruce, John N and Lyn.

  • Bingo this week. Rostered on are Henk (captain), Dick, Don & Ian.

Daryl conducted the induction of Brian Pattison into our club, sponsored by Ian and Dick Jennings.

Guest speakers:

Tim started the talk by sincerely thanking the Rotary Club of Coolamon for the opportunity for Jackson to experience the 12 month exchange to Finland.

Peta & Jackson then presented a slide show of their recent eight-week tour, which started in Dubai and then proceeded on to Denmark and Finland.

The Wykeses stopped off in Dubai for a few days and described it as WOW! They toured the old & the new part of the city. They then travelled to Denmark and visited the spiral forest tower & Tivoli Gardens, among other highlights.

After exploring Denmark for almost two weeks they then went to Helsinki, Finland, where Jackson spent his Rotary Exchange year in 2018. Normally the capital is covered in snow in winter, but while they were there, there sadly was none. They stayed with most of Jackson’s host families in the town of Urjala and attended a Rotary meeting in Aservo nearby.  While staying at Jackson’s first host family they went on a dog sled ride on the ice and Peta had a fit when they found out in the middle of the journey they were on an ice-covered lake! Because they were in Finland in the middle of winter, the sun rose about 11.30 in the morning and set a few hours later about 2 pm!!!

Our new Youth Service director, Anne, thanked them for their presentation.

The raffle was won by Chez (both prizes!) and Albert concluded the evening with an entertaining fine session.
