ANZAC DAY 2016

“MEETING” MONDAY APRIL 25th. 2016

ANZAC Day 2016.  There was no official meeting today however we did host 11 Americans from District 5610 to a welcome BBQ at the Sports Club.  Thanks to all the hosts who met the team at Wagga Wagga airport.  Thanks also to Lance and Robyn Gillespie for bringing out Norm and Linda who arrived from New Zealand.

Many thanks to Myffy Collette and Bernadette Milne as well as Susan Glassford for the salads.  The BBQ was cooked by Steve Exton and Alex Thompson with the steaks supplied by Henk Hulsman.

There were 15 members present a great role up for ANZAC Day!

The D5610 team exchanged banners with President Wayne Lewis.  A good night of fellowship followed and we are sure that the team slept well that night.

Next day the team was shown some of Coolamon’s highlights including the upcoming Cheese factory, the Up-to-Date Store.  They then went to Junee for lunch at the Licorice Factory followed by a tour of the Junee Round House.

Today the Team visited Huff ‘n’ Puff Constructions in Ganmain followed by a mystery trip to Narrandera and then to Wagga Wagga and the CSU.  More news next week.

President Wayne Lewis wishes to thank one and all for a busy week with the D9700 DISCON, the visit of the D5610 Team.  Wayne would like to specially thank the host families for their generous time with the Americans and not forgetting the drivers and other members who spent time with them.  Their visit is not over as yet still another day to go.

That was the uncertain odyssey facing Muhammad Mallah Hamza, a 26-year-old ethnic Kurd, in late 2014 when he decided to leave his native Syria. The trip would lead the recent college graduate to a picturesque Austrian village – and into the arms of a local Rotary club that would allow him to begin a new life while helping others in his situation.

In 3 days, on Saturday 30.04.2016, Kenya will host the largest ivory burn in history!  This will be a clear statement against elephant poaching!   Let’s hope this will mark the beginning of the end for the global ivory trade, which kills an estimated 33,000 elephants every year!

MEETING MONDAY APRIL 18th. 2016

Tonight we had a very good and enjoyable meeting with our own catering, i.e. a BBQ on the Rotary/Lions BBQ at the Sports Club.  The steaks were the best (thanks Henk), and cooked to perfection by Daryl Breust and Steve Exton.  Our two intrepid Ganmain members Myffy Collette and Bernadette Milne provided the salads.  All in all a big effort from all concerned.

Our guest speaker tonight was Georgia Booth from Ganmain.  Georgia is still at the Kinross School in Orange and took the opportunity to talk about her experience at the Honeywell National Summer School that Georgia attended recently.

Guests tonight included Michelle and John Booth from Ganmain, Darcy Miles grandson of Grahame Miles and Phoung from Vietnam.  Partners Sharon Miles, Marilyn Jennings, Helen Lewis and Susan Glassford along with 19 members attended a great turn out.

President Wayne Lewis congratulated John and Susan Glassford on their appointment as District Governor  Nominee Designate and partner as Governor to District 9700 for the Rotary year 2018-2019.

President Wayne Lewis spoke of the upcoming District Conference in Wagga Wagga on Saturday and Sunday 23rd and 24th.  More members were invited to attend.  Wayne advised the meeting that the Southern Aurora will be in Coolamon on Monday ANZAC Day with a trip to Junee and back to Coolamon leaving at 1.30 pm and returning by 3.00 pm.

Several reports presented including the vandalism of the flag poles in Lions park, a successful Bingo Night raising a net $349.  Pride of workmanship awards nominations required by Dave McKinley.  Myffy spoke briefly on the Coolamon newspaper and that the Coolamon Community Diary will be coming to our Club.

Ted Hutcheon conducted a very amusing fines session as Sergeant and Susan won the raffle of a beautiful box of organic garlic products donated by the Booth family.

A committee meeting was held after the meeting to plan the Rotary Friendship Exchange visit starting on ANZAC Day with 11 visiting Rotarians and partners from the USA District 5610.  A full report and photos in next week’s bulletin.

Guest Speaker Georgia Booth

Georgia spoke very well of Rotary and thanked the club for sponsoring her to the Honeywell Summer Camp.  Georgia visited the UNSW, Sydney University, Sydney Technical University and Wollongong University.  Georgia took part in several civil engineering projects including making a parachute to drop an egg from the 1st floor of a building and it did not break.

Georgia visited Blue Scope Steel, RAAF base and SITA Waste Management facilities.  Georgia was able to discuss future careers in Civil Engineering and is keen to do Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering  as well still competing in triathlons.

PP Ian Durham thanked Georgia and presented her with a well engineered kangaroo money pouch.

All of our members were very impressed with Georgia and hope that one day Georgia will come back to give progress talks on her career.

John F. Germ is board chair and chief executive officer of Campbell and Associates Inc., consulting engineers. He joined the firm as an engineer in 1965 after four years in the U.S. Air Force. He serves on the boards of several organizations, including the board and executive committee of the Public Education Foundation, Orange Grove Center Inc., and as board chair of Blood Assurance Inc. He also is founder and treasurer of the Chattanooga State Technical Community College Foundation and president of the Tennessee Jaycee Foundation.

He was Tennessee Young Man of the Year in 1970; Engineer of the Year, 1986; Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year, 1992; and Tennessee Community Organizations Volunteer of the Year, 2009. He is a recipient of the Boy Scouts Silver Beaver Award and the Arthritis Foundation Circle of Hope Award. In 2013, the White House recognized him as a Champion of Change.

Germ joined Rotary in 1976 and has served Rotary as vice president, director, Foundation trustee and vice chair, aide to the Foundation trustee chair, chair of Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge, RI Board Executive Committee member, RI president’s aide, Council on Legislation representative and chair, membership zone coordinator, chair of numerous committees, area coordinator, RI training leader, and district governor.

Germ has received RI’s Service Above Self Award and The Rotary Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service and Distinguished Service Award. He and his wife, Judy, are Benefactors and members of the Arch Klumph Society of The Rotary Foundation. They have four children and six grandchildren.

Kenya prepares for world’s largest ivory burn

Ahead of the mass burning event to take place in Nairobi National Park on Saturday 30th April, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) personnel have begun transferring over 100 tonnes of seized ivory and 1.35 tonnes of rhino horn to the site.

MEETING MONDAY APRIL 11th. 2016

Rotarian Ted Hutcheon regaled with the Reader’s Digest version of the story of his life at tonight’s meeting.  Ted certainly has led an interesting life, and his story had numerous surprises for many of us.  We weren’t surprised to hear that Ted was not a standout at primary school, but were surprised to hear that he completed an advanced uni degree, including several years of accounting.

After working for Jerilderie Shire as a clerk (the youngest clerk to serve in NSW) for a few years, he returned to Coolamon to work in the family business (Hutcheon & Pearce) selling farm machinery.  Ted eventually took over a few John Deere franchises in NSW, and made a career out of selling tractors and making a range of loans to farmers (and friends!).  Ted has made numerous trips to America to tour John Deere facilities, and has some interesting stories to tell (too numerous to recount here!).

Apart from selling farm equipment, Ted has been involved in a number of interesting hobbies, including racing cars, flying small aircraft, and shooting targets (he was state champion two years ago).  Ted’s son Aaron has taken over the family business, so Ted’s legacy will carry on.

APRIL 2016 Presidential Message

Many years ago, in Kolkata, India, I had the chance to meet Mother Teresa. She was an incredible woman with an incredible force of personality. When she walked down the street, the crowd parted in front of her like the Red Sea. Yet when you talked to her, if you mentioned the tremendous things she had done, she almost did not engage in this topic at all. By many reports, if you asked her what her greatest achievement was, she would answer, “I am an expert in cleaning toilets.”

The answer was both humorous and absolutely serious. Her business was caring for others. Toilets had to be cleaned, so she cleaned them. There was no question of a job being beneath her. Helping people who needed help was her work, and there was nothing higher, nothing in the world more important than that.

Missing For 9 Years, Ahmed The Elephant Returns.

Andrea Turkalo, who’s gotten to know some 4,000 forest elephants over the past 20 years, has recently spent months focused on a bit of sad detective work: Through careful observation, she’s been slowly piecing together a list of the dead and of the living.

Each day, as many as 100 elephants materialize in front of her viewing platform in the Dzanga Bai forest clearing in Central African Republic. While the elephants socialize, wrestle, mate, and drink mineral-rich water, the Wildlife Conservation Society researcher figures out which of her study elephants were killed during a 2013 raid by Seleka rebels, and which survived. It is difficult work for someone who considers these animals to be family.

Susan and I are currently in Western Australia conducting a straw bale workshop at Calingiri NE of Perth.

During last weekend I was interviewed by the selection committee for our District Governor for 2018-2019 via Skype.

I am humbled and honoured to have been selected to serve our District 9700 as Governor for 2018-2019.

Susan and I look forward to the challenge ahead and to be mindful of the legacy left for us by all the Governors Past, Present and Future who have worked so hard to maintain our Rotary presence in our District with some 41 Rotary Clubs.

This is the first time that a Governor has been selected from the Coolamon Rotary Club.

Our own Tracy Monica Ochieng is going to University once Tracy has chosen the course that she wants to attend.  We have helped Tracy through High School and now Tracy has graduated Tracy will obtain qualifications in Maternal and Child Health.

Then Tracy is going back to Mathare to work  for the women and children in that slum that we have visited many times now.  We are all very proud of this young lady who we met in Mathare in 2011 after climbing the Mountains of the Moon.

How are you and your family? Hope this New Year you are having new experiences like I am. I passed my KCSE exams and am glad I have a direct entry to the public universities here in Kenya.

I had 60 aggregate points that’s a B. a C+ in maths, B+ in English, B+ in biology, C+ in chemistry, B-in Swahili, B- in Geography, and a D+ in computer studies.

I thank God for the results and for your unending support, your pride and belief in me, I am who I am because of you, I have an education, I am empowered because you made me feel like a champion. I’m eager to join the university with all aggressiveness to do something that will enable me give out to my society and have a better Mathare.

MEETING MONDAY APRIL 4th. 2016

Tonight 16 members attended our monthly Club Assembly.

It was wonderful to have Ted Hutcheon back after his very recent car accident and his stay in the ICU at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital.

The following topics were discussed some at length and with passion:

• Easter Markets a great result with a net return of around $1,200.
• District Assembly due to the upcoming sowing of crops only 3 Directors will be going to Grenfell on Sunday morning.  Don Dyce, Dave McKinley and Dick Jennings will represent Coolamon.
• A discussion on the meaning of a Paul Harris Fellow explained by John Glassford.
• RYLA Coolamon has sponsored two candidates this year.
• Guest speakers Ian Jennings is doing a great job and next week we have the life and fun times of Ted Hutcheon followed by Georgia Booth on Golden Ganmain Garlic on Monday 18th April.
• We allocated the billets for the visit of the Rotary Friendship team from D 5610 USA  Serving 43 clubs in South Dakota, northwestern Iowa, southwestern Minnesota, and Sioux City, Nebraska.
• A committee, made up of the hosts for the American team has been formed.  We need to meet asap to plan the stay of these friends from Dakota!  Don Dyce will coordinate the committee.
• DISCON 2016 Wagga Wagga we now have around 10 members going on Saturday 23rd April.  We need more members to attend please.  To our new members it is a great way to learn about Rotary and to have two past RI Presidents in attendance is very rare indeed.  Bill Boyd is a wonderful speaker and worth the price of admission alone.
• A Taste of Africa Night Saturday May 14th flyers will be ready next week and Alex Thompson will collect them and give you each some to send to and give to your friends.
• ShelterBox stay tuned for a ShelterBox day in Coolamon this Friday 8th April contact Wayne Lewis. URGENT!

FILIPINO Rex Flores faced being forced to leave Australia next week until the same extraordinary community spirit that helped save his life last year convinced the federal government to grant him permanent residency.

Also really happy that our Burrumbuttock Hay Runners effort on the highway made it to a few media outlets (even the 7News Sydney 6pm bulletin & Pauline Hanson’s Facebook Page) – and even the man himself, Brendan Farrell for Australian of the year stopped to take a photo! We will announce our final fundraised amount this afternoon!

Rotarians equipped the neonatal intensive care unit. More than 160,000 babies have been delivered in the hospital since Rotarians became involved.

What Kerstin Jeska-Thorwart remembers is the silence. No birds chirping, no dogs barking, no car engines revving. Nothing. “I’ve never heard such a silence before, and never since,” she says. “I knew something must have happened.”

It was 9:35 the morning after Christmas 2004, and in Sri Lanka, it was a Poya Day, a Buddhist public holiday held every full moon. Jeska-Thorwart, a lawyer from Germany, was on vacation in Hikkaduwa, on the island’s southwestern coast. Any other morning of her holiday she and her husband would have been on the beach, but today they stayed back at their vacation home, up a small hill about a half-mile from the water’s edge, to clean and prepare for guests.

After a few minutes, sound returned, as though it had been switched on. Now she heard people running, crying. She went down the main road to see what had happened. She saw people in swimming suits, shoeless, covered in blood.

They told her there was a big wave.

The tsunami, as she later learned, was caused when an earthquake with the estimated force of 23,000 atomic bombs rattled the floor of the Indian Ocean. The seabed rose 10 feet, displacing 7 cubic miles of water. A wall of water, in some places up to 100 feet high, slammed into countries throughout Southeast Asia and as far away as Africa. All told, more than 230,000 people died in 14 countries, and 1.7 million were left homeless. More than half of the dead were in Indonesia, followed by Sri Lanka, where 35,000 people were killed.

In the picture above, an orangutan can be seen exploring the bleak landscape they must once have called home, with a dart lodged into their back. Sadly, orangutans are often shot on sight if they wander onto a palm oil plantation. Over the past two decades alone, an estimated 20,000 of these animals lost their lives at the hands of the palm oil industry, and it has been estimated that they could be extinct in just thirty years if their current declining population trend continues.

Rome hosts Italy’s first ivory crush

Almost one ton of seized ivory, with an estimated value of USD $5 million, was destroyed at the Circus Maximus in Rome last week.

Government officials helped to load the tusks and carved models into an industrial stone crusher and a steamroller before the pieces were disposed of permanently.

This is how we used to travel to England from Kenya in the 50s. Union Castle Line or the BI Line through the Suez Canal onto Naples, Gibraltar then into the Bay of Biscay before Tilbury in London. The ships used to stand on their heads in the Bay of Biscay. Great fun! This was the Rhodesia Castle of the Union Castle Line.

The ship hit a hurricane in the Bay of Biscay, and the storm and size of the waves are etched into my memory. The ship rolled so far from side to side that she shuddered each time to regain her equilibrium. All we could hear was furniture and glassware and china crashing everywhere and muffled screams, as everyone had been ordered to their cabins by the Captain.

All except my Mother, sister and I and another woman and her daughter, who decided in all our wisdom, that up in the lounge was by far the best place in a storm. We were duly thrown about with the rest of the furniture (not bolted down in those days), the grand piano ended up in the Bay of Biscay in pieces.

While back at Rotary headquarters this week, General Secretary John Hewko, Past General Secretary Ed Futa, Don Garner, and I hosted officials from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Organization (TECO). Pictured with us is (from left to right): Deputy Director General Samuel Kuo, Director General Calvin Ho, and Director Joseph Sun.

I would like to thank Taipei officials for their support of Rotary. In the past five years, membership has grown to 726 clubs with more than 34,000 members in Taiwan.

PS Coolamon will be manning the RAGES display in the Upper Foyer at the Civic Centre during the DISCON.   Give us a hand please on Saturday, thanks.

THE ROTARY BELL

In 1922, U.S. Rotarians organized an attendance contest; the challenge was that the losing clubs would join in giving the winning club a prize. The Rotary Club of New York City was declared the winner and to them was awarded as a prize a bell from a popular patrol boat, which was placed on wood that came from HMS “Victory”, Admiral Nelson’s vessel at the battle of Trafalgar.

Since then, the bell used in Rotary meetings started to represent, as on the ships, order, discipline and the time to guide us through the weekly hour and a half meetings. The bell informs us with its sound the beginning of the Rotary meeting, at which time people present should stand, same as at the end, in order to salute the national and Rotary flags. The gavel symbolizes the authority invested in the Rotarian elected to the highest position in Rotary, and through him, reminds those present of his authority.

When presidents transmit their positions to their successors at the end of their mandate, they give the bell their last hit turning the gavel over to their successor, symbolizing the transfer of authority.

This is personal and here are some of the rhinos that we met in Sibuya last May:

SHELTERBOX ARRIVES IN FIJI

Last Saturday we held a ShelterBox morning in Ganmain. On hand were Myffy Collette, Bernadette Milne, Trevor Parkes, Don Dyce, Wayne Lewis, John Glassford, Paul Weston, Leslie Weston and Bogart Weston.  As always the Ganmain people are very generous.

RYDA program held in Wagga this week, a big thank you to Ian Durham and Henk Hulsman for volunteering their day last Friday to look after the contingent from the Coolamon Central School and other schools that took part.

RYDA Rotary Youth Driver Awareness now comes under RSE or Road Safety Education a Non for Profit Organisation and Rotary is one of their Corporate Partners.  The Patron is Sir William Deane and the Chair is Kerry Chikarovski.

MEETING MONDAY MARCH 21st. 2016

Tonight we met at the Temora Aviation Museum as guests of the Temora Rotary Club.  Assistant Governor Tony Sinclair Group 4 in D9700 was our Chair.  Coolamon was well represented by 14 members and their partners including, Jan Nulty, Jann Breust, Chez Post, Susan Glassford, Helen Lewis, Sally Farmer and Bethany.

It was a social meeting in the Temora Aviation Museum.  Temora Rotary did a great job and around 92 people were present including the Temora Probus Club.  Chair AG Tony Sinclair welcomed the guests and while we were waiting for our dinner Temora RC conducted a spirited fines session followed by a raffle with many many prizes and Coolamon did well.

The guest speaker was Rtn. Kenny Love who was supported by his wife Rtn. Lisa Love.  Kenny is the CEO of the Temora Aviation Museum and Lisa is the Assistant Manager.  It was an excellent presentation of the recent Warbirds Downunder Show held last November over four days.  This is the biggest Warbirds Show in the Southern Hemisphere and is only held every 2 years.

The Temora Aviation Museum’s President and the Founder is David Lowy, AM.  This is a spectacular museum and a wonderful asset for the Riverina and right on our doorstep.

INSTITUTE EQUIPS REGIONAL LEADERS TO ADVANCE ROTARY’S STORY

 

Regional leaders from around the globe gathered at Rotary World Headquarters in Evanston in early March for training they will use to inspire members in their respective areas.

Several participants – most of whom will begin their term on 1 July – noted that the true measure of the institute’s success will be how well the information they learned is transmitted to Rotary members.

“We have to realize that training doesn’t stop at the district level,” said Michael Boyer, a Rotary public image coordinator from Pismo Beach, California, USA. “We train people really well to be governors and club presidents but we have to realize that we also have to train our members in how to talk about Rotary.”

Dr. Paul Weston thanks Dr. Allan Ernest of CSU for his amazing talk on gravitational waves.

GRAVITATIONAL WAVES

The club was treated to an excellent presentation Monday night by Dr Allan Ernest, professor of astrophysics at CSU and a former resident of Coolamon.  Allan gave a thoroughly engaging talk describing the recent discovery of gravitational waves, how they were detected, and the significance of this discovery for science and humanity.  Even though much of the content was challenging to understand because it dealt with concepts that were unfamiliar to most of us, Allan did a great job explaining things and illustrating his points with very helpful graphics.

The full significance of the findings actually remains to be seen, but Allan likened their potential impact to the changes that followed Galileo’s exploration of the heavens with a telescope.  Although gravity waves are very difficult to detect, the technological advances required to detect them will likely have scientific applications far beyond cosmological research.  The engagement of the audience with Allan’s talk was evident from the extensive number of questions asked of the speaker at the end of his talk.  Paul thanked Allan for his excellent talk and presented him with our usual token of appreciation, a kangaroo hide change purse.

The ShelterBox fundraiser for victims of the cyclone in Fiji is on for Ganmain on Saturday morning.   Rostered on from 8:00-10:00 are Wayne, Trevor, Ted, Myffy, Bernie, and Don; Leslie, Paul, John and Garth are rostered on from 10:00-12:00.

One Fight Unite RAGES want to thank David Pocock most sincerely for signing the ‘SAY No’ poster. David signed the poster shortly after the match recently played in Perth Western Australia showing his support for the campaign even though he had just sustained an injury.
David Pocock, a rugby player extraordinaire grew up in a farming area in Zimbabwe. Due to political unrest in this country his family moved to Brisbane, Australia to start a new life in 2002.

David captained the Australian U20s at the Junior World Championship in 2008 and later that year made his Wallaby debut against New Zealand in Hong Kong. In 2010 he was awarded the John Eales Medal. In 2011 he played in the Rugby World Cup.

(Reuters) – An executive with a Beverly Hills gallery and auction house has pleaded guilty of conspiring to smuggling at least $1 million in animal products that included rhino horn and elephant ivory, federal prosecutors said on Wednesday.

Joseph Chait, 38, a senior auction administrator with I.M. Chait Gallery/Auctioneers, could be sentenced to up to five years in prison on the wildlife smuggling charge, the U.S. Justice Department said.

He also faces a maximum prison term of five years after pleading guilty to violating a federal law that bans trade involving illegally gained wildlife, they said.

Chait falsified customs forms by stating ivory and rhino horn were made of bone, wood or plastic. After a rhino carving sold at auction for $230,000, Chait made false documents putting the value at $108.75, and saying the object was made of plastic, the U.S. Department of Justice said.

Lawyers for Chait were not immediately available for comment.

The case comes as conservationists and law enforcement officials in the United States and globally have been trying to crack down on the illegal trade in products from the two threatened species.

Rhino horn sells at prices higher than gold in places such as Vietnam, where a belief with no basis in science has emerged in the past few years that it can be used to cure cancer.

South Africa, which has more rhinos than any other country in Africa, saw nearly 1,200 of the animals killed by poachers in 2015, its environment ministry said.

Making up a meeting.  It is customary in Rotary that when you travel to another area away fomr your club that you attend the nearest Rotary Club to make up a missed meeting at your own club.  I do not do this as a habit or because I have ot but because I want to.  Meeting other Rotarians in other ares around teh world is one way of making great new friends and learning about that club and the area that they represent.

This week I attended the  Rotary Club of Beechworth in NE Victoria.  A delightful town and very pretty this time of year being Autumn.  The members at Beechworth made Susan and I very welcome indeed.  The meeting was a membership night where Beechworth invited prospective members to attend and learn about Rotary and what Rotary does.

President George Browne welcomed all the members and the prospective new members and invited a few including myself to do a 5 minute spot.

Feb 2016. In the midst of a serious drought it is interesting to see how certain animals manage the situation. This hole in a ‘dry’ riverbed was dug by an Elephant which becomes an important life line for other animals to make use of. Here a Kudu bull is quenching his thirst whilst two male Impala wait their turn. There were a number of different species that made use of this waterhole that I saw. From Baboons, Bushbuck, various birds etc.

Another very busy week for the Rotary Club of Coolamon.

Last week we went to Wagga Wagga to support Polio Plus by going to the movies.  30 members, partners and friends attended.   It was also an excellent turn out from the Wagga and surrounding Rotary clubs.  Dame Maggie Smith starred and it was based on a true story.  Most enjoyable night which started with a meal at the Thirsty Crow!

DG’s Second Coming March 7th 2016

Monday night we had the pleasure of the second visit by our DG Gary Roberts and Marilyn Roberts.  Also present were the AG Bryan Short and his wife the AG Group 4 from Temora, Tony Sinclair and some of the members of Temora RC.

We had a jovial meeting with DG Gary promoting the upcoming D9700 DISCON. One of teh highlights of the conference will be Saturday night with a move from tradition in that we will be at a Beatnix Concert.  DG Gary and Marilyn have lined up some excellent speakers and the RIP representative will be PRIP Kalyan Banerjee.  Also PRIP Bill Boyd is teh key note speaker as Chair of WASRAG.

PE Don Dyce spoke on the PETS training that he attended.  Don presented President Wayne with the Membership Development Award that our club received at PETS for achieving the highest retention rate over the past 3 years n D9700.

MARCH 2016 

Some years ago, I was asked to speak at an Interact club in my home city of Colombo, Sri Lanka. I have always taken my interactions with Rotary youth very seriously, so I prepared my remarks carefully and put the same effort into my presentation that I would for any other event. After the meeting, I stayed to chat with a few of the Interactors, answering their questions and wishing them well.

I came out of the classroom where we had met into the autumn afternoon. The bright sun was shining directly into my eyes, so I found a bit of shade behind a pillar where I could wait for my ride.

As I stood there, hidden from view, I overheard a group of the very Interactors who had just listened to my speech. Naturally I was curious: What would they be saying? What had they taken away from my presentation? I quickly realized that what they had taken away was not at all what I had intended.

The fierce July sun beat down on us as we approached the field where the match was to take place. It wasn’t much of a soccer pitch, with its uneven terrain and rusty poles for goalposts, but the local teens we had met came ready to play. They guided us over the piles of bricks and broken tiles that separate their neighborhood community center from the field behind it and took their positions.

Much like any schoolyard competitors, incursions from grazing cows notwithstanding, players stretched and warmed up, took turns retrieving out-of-bounds balls, and, after the final goal, lined up to exchange high-fives. The Vietnamese contingent handily outscored our group of American Rotary volunteers, but the defeat was far from bitter. The five Rotarians, four Interactors, and two 20-something alumni of Rotary Youth Leadership Awards had already achieved what they had come to Vietnam to do: distribute durable soccer balls to promote play and to spread Rotary’s message of service and goodwill.

Australia First Country to Place Immediate Ban on Lion Trophies.

Above two members of a pride of lions that we met in South Africa, protected and as they should be.

Australian environment minister Greg Hunt made a bold and important move for the welfare of lions by signing an order banning any import or export of any trophy body part of a lion.

Hunting of lions for sport, show, and profit has become a major problem for wild lion populations over the past 25 years especially. A practice known as “canned hunting” has become unfortunately widespread in which lions are intentionally bred in captivity only to be more or less handed over to international hunters for sport. Often times in these circumstances the lions are drugged or baited, further adding to the gruesome inhumanity of it.

Due to a multitude of factors, the lion population has fallen to 40,000, 50% less than it was 25 years ago, according to the International Fund for Animal Welfare. There are many factors contributing to this such as habitat loss, human conflict, and skewing of the genetic balance within lion communities by removing large male lions for illegal hunting purposes.

Hunt announced the new policy during a “global march for lions” at Melbourne’s Federation Square and said the practice of canned hunting was “cruel” and “barbaric.”

Hope Update – Saving the Survivors

As with everything our Rhino girl does, Hope is taking everything in her stride! She is unflappable (or she is saving up all the cheekiness for later on – which is entirely possible knowing Hope).

Over the weekend she seemed to settle into her new surroundings. There was very little pacing or aimless trotting around her boma (enclosure). The one thing she definitely is, is hungry! She is polishing off all the feed that gets put out for her. This is great sign as animals who are under great stress tend not to eat and drink.

DESPERATE NEED FOR SHELTER IN FIJI IN THE WAKE OF CYCLONE WINSTON

ShelterBox Response Teams are working across Fiji to provide shelter for families after Cyclone Winston, the worst storm ever recorded in the southern hemisphere.

The storm hit on 20 February, bringing torrential rain, wind speeds of 200 mph, and 40ft waves to the country’s 330 islands. The sheer force of the storm has obliterated up to 90% of structures and left an estimated 120,000 people without shelter.

We’re ramping up our response to Cyclone Winston in Fiji and are planning to send 2,000 ShelterBoxes plus other essential aid. We need your help!  Click on the ShelterBox logo for their web site.

Rotarian Mark Balla Shares His Story

Recently, Mark (a presenter at WWS7 in Sao Paulo in May 2015) presented at TEDx, New Zealand. In the talk you will hear about his organization and their first project in India completed very recently. This project is to build 15 toilets in a school of 500 kids. The Rotary Club of Box Hill Central in Australia (district 9810) and the Rotary Club of Nasik Road in India (district 3030) were partners.

They are now developing a more ambitious project, this time involving seven or eight schools and as many as 5000 children. Beyond that, over the next few years they intend to reach tens of thousands of children. Listen to the TEDx talk or visit the facebook page to learn more!

MEETING MONDAY FEBRUARY 29th. 2016

This week has been a very busy one for our members starting with the Presidents Elect Training Seminar held in Young at the weekend.  PE Don Dyce attended and will report to the club soon.  here are the 41 Presidents for 2016-2017 thanks Paul Murray for the photo.

On Saturday morning our club conducted a street raffle in Coolamon.  The winner of the load of firewood was Ricky Hard.  Thanks go to the volunteers; Daryl Breust, Ted Hutcheon, Garth Perkin, Wayne Lewis, Myffy Collette and Paul Weston.

Monday night’s meeting was held as a Vocational Services meeting in conjunction with Wagga Wagga Sunrise RC.  This was held in Ganmain at the Huff ‘n’ Puff Constructions complex of straw bale buildings.

Susan and John welcomed all 50 Rotarians and their partners to Huff n Puff and we all went on a tour of the 14 straw bale buildings that Huff and Puff have built in Ganmain.  This was followed by dinner at the Ganmain Hall catered for by the Ladies from St. Brendan’s Primary School.  Thanks go to Stephanie Plane and her team.  It was a great meal followed by a slide show of just some of the straw bale buildings that Huff n Puff Have built since 1998 all around Australia.

Special thanks go to the Wagga Wagga Sunrise club for making the effort to come out to Ganmain and share our Vocational visit with them.  Thanks also to Dave McKinley as Vocational Services Director of our club.  PE Don Dyce did a great job as Chair of the meeting.

Vanathy and I had the great honor of meeting Mrs. Danuta Wałęsa, wife to the former President of Poland, Lech Wałęsa. I gifted her with a Rotary crystal during our visit.

In rural Ghana, Rotary members supply clean water and sanitation facilities to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

Clean water is a basic need for human beings. When people, especially children, have access to clean water, they live healthier and more productive lives. However, at least 3,000 children die each day from diseases caused by unsafe water, which is what motivates our members to build wells, install rainwater harvesting systems, and teach community members how to maintain new infrastructure.

While very few people die of thirst, millions die from preventable waterborne diseases, providing the impetus for our members to also improve sanitation facilities in undeveloped countries. Members start by providing toilets and latrines that flush into a sewer or safe enclosure and then add education programs to promote hand-washing and other good hygiene habits.

The boomslang snake is native and restricted to Sub-Saharan Africa.

The boomslang snake has a highly potent venom, which it delivers through large fangs located in the back of the jaw. Boomslangs are able to open their jaws up to 170° when biting.  The venom of the boomslang is primarily a hemotoxin; it disables the blood clotting process and the victim may die as a result of internal and external bleeding. The venom has been observed to cause hemorrhage into tissues such as muscle and brain. Other signs and symptoms include headache, nausea, sleepiness, and mental disorders.

The mongoose which this story is about is the bravest little fellow that I came to know and loved in Kenya . This story by Rudyard Kipling was my favourite when I was a child.  Please down load it here and read it to your grandchildren, they will love it.

FEBRUARY IS ROTARY’S

Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month

The University of Queensland is proud to partner with The Rotary Foundation to provide a tailored Masters Degree, aimed at potential world and community leaders, designed to have a practical effect on addressing international and regional conflicts.

MEETING MONDAY FEBRUARY 22nd. 2016

Last night we celebrated two birthdays that of Rotary and that of our Secretary and PP Dr. Paul Weston.

We had a great night with three guests Helen Lewis, Chez Post and Susan Glassford.  As well we had our Group 5 Assistant Governor Bryan Short from the Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga visit us.  16 members attended to celebrate Rotary and Paul’s birthday.

The very lovely birthday cake made by Marie Jennings, many thanks Marie it was very much appreciated by all.

President Wayne Lewis welcomed all and some reminders:

• Friendship exchange billets April 25th-27th.  Don Dyce coordinating.
• Easter markets committee meeting 25th Feb at the Sports Club 7.30 pm.

There was a short slide show on the history of the birth of the Rotary Club of Chicago and Rotary International.

The first four Rotarians:

Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, Hiram Shorey, and Paul P. Harris.

The first Rotary meeting took place on 23 February 1905 Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram Shorey gathered at Loehr’s office in Room 711 of the Unity Building in downtown Chicago.

As of October 2015 Rotary has grown and now boasts:

Women in Rotary:

Until 1989, the Constitution and Bylaws of Rotary International stated that Rotary club membership was for males only. In 1978 the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, invited three women to become members. The RI board withdrew the charter of that club for violation of the RI Constitution. The club brought suit against RI claiming a violation of a state civil rights law which prevents discrimination of any form in business establishments or public accommodations.

1 July 2008, Catherine Noyer-Riveau, of Paris, France, Zone 11, elected to serve as the first woman on the Rotary International board.

Creating Sustainable Peace.

Building sustainable peace projects requires holistic thinking and a community-driven approach.  Rotarians are uniquely positioned to foster healthy, resilient and more peaceful communities.

Violent conflict can devastate a country’s society, economy and political governance. Coordinating projects that prevent or resolve conflict requires a tailored, sensitive approach. Rotarians can play a vital role in the peace building process by galvanizing members of their communities to identify and address the underlying causes of conflict. While the types of projects Rotarians develop vary greatly, the following examples may help your club or district identify action-oriented approaches to building and sustaining peace:

In 1988, when I was 16, I began to protest with other students for democracy, human rights, and social justice in my home country of Burma, now called Myanmar. Four years later, I was arrested and tortured for two months in an interrogation camp. I was shackled and beaten. I was not allowed to sleep. They put a cloth over my eyes and a hood over my head, so I could not tell the day from the night. They asked me the same questions over and over. It was quite similar to George Orwell’s 1984. After this, I was sent to a special court. I was given no lawyer, just sent directly to prison.

They did not want us to learn in prison, but I had a dream to go and study overseas when I was released. I convinced a guard to smuggle books to me. I received a dictionary to learn English and books on economics and philosophy. I dug a hole in the wall of my cell and hid the books and covered the hole with an image of the Buddha. I studied English at night and in the day I slept.

Elephant Family Pays their Respects by Sir David Attenborough  

This is simply amazing and tells us that he elephants have a developed brain and family structure way ahead of us humans. 

During the late 1950s, Blake became one of the best known British pop artists. His paintings from this time included imagery from advertisements, music hall entertainment, and wrestlers, often including collaged elements. Blake was included in group exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Arts and had his first solo exhibition in 1960.

In the ‘Young Contemporaries’ exhibition of 1961 in which he exhibited alongside David Hockney and R.B. Kitaj, he was first identified with the emerging British Pop Art movement. Blake won the (1961) John Moores junior award for Self Portrait with Badges. He came to wider public attention when, along with Pauline Boty, Derek Boshier and Peter Phillips, he featured in Ken Russell’s Monitor film on pop art, Pop Goes the Easel, broadcast on BBC television in 1962.

From 1963 Blake was represented by Robert Fraser placing him at the centre of swinging London and brought him into contact with leading figures of popular culture.
