NOVEMBER IS ROTARY FOUNDATION  MONTH

Founder of the Rotary Foundation

1917 Arch C. Klumph, Rotary’s sixth president, proposed to the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, the creation of an “endowment fund for Rotary . . . for the purpose of doing good in the world in charitable, educational, and other avenues of community service.”

1928 The endowment fund had grown to $US5,739.07, and it was renamed The Rotary Foundation. It became a distinct entity within Rotary International. Five Trustees, including Klumph, were appointed to “hold, invest, manage, and administer all of its property. . . as a single trust, for the furtherance of the purposes of RI.”

1930 The Foundation made its first grant of US $500 to the International Society for Crippled Children, created by Rotarian Edgar F. “Daddy” Allen, which grew into the Easter Seals organization

1945 Forty-nine Rotarians help draft the United Nations Charter in San Francisco. Many of the delegates from around the world were also members of Rotary clubs

A great honour to be involved in the declaration of Cootamundra as a Rotary Peace Town and the opening of the new rotunda. Also a great pleasure to meet the Governor of NSW, His Excellency David Hurley who was kind enough to attend this auspicious occasion. Congratulations to the Cootamundra Rotary Club and The Council headed by Mayor Jim Slattery for bringing this all to fruition.

The Meteor

As a jet was flying over Arizona on a clear day, the copilot was providing his passengers with a running commentary about landmarks over the PA system.

Coming up on the right, you can see the Meteor Crater, which is a major tourist attraction in northern Arizona. It was formed when a lump of nickel and iron, roughly 150 feet in diameter and weighing 300,000 tons, struck the earth 50,000 years ago at about 40,000 miles an hour, scattering white-hot debris for miles in every direction. The hole measures nearly a mile across and is 570 feet deep.

ROTARY INFORMATION

Chicago improv coach Dina Facklis (center) demonstrates how to participate in an improvisational session on the first day of the summit, which served as an icebreaker for attendees.

A two-day Young Professionals Summit, held in Chicago in September, gave 32 Rotary leaders ages 25 to 40 the opportunity to share their thoughts about their Rotary experiences, reflect on their stories, and exchange ideas.

Although there are many young leaders within Rotary’s global community, there are few opportunities for them to connect with other young professionals and to add their voices to the discussion. The aim of the Young Professionals Summit was to engage participants in open and candid discussions about what’s working now in Rotary, ideas for improvements, and ways to extend positive experiences with Rotary to young professionals around the world. Organizers hope that the participants will hold similar events in their own cities to bring more young professionals’ voices into conversations about membership, diversity, and the transition from Rotaract and Rotary.

Big Tim who featured at the Kenyan Night in Ganmain has had an attempt on his life lucky that Paula Kahumbu saw him in pain and called the Kenyan Wildlife Service and the David Sheldrick Foundation who went to his aid and saved him.

 Successfully darted, Tim’s wound is treated, as he lies with his tusks framing Mount Kilimanjaro

 Back on his feet post treatment, Tim watches as those that helped him depart.

I have been a Rotarian for 5 years, Rotary Club of Rotarua Lakes, NZ. I was born in India 63 years ago and lived on top of the pile most of my life. I graduated from medical school in India, specialised as an anaesthetist in England and did a fellowship in Chicago. I have lived in many countries among people of different religions and beliefs and philosophies.

What I have learned is that no people have a monopoly on kindness or cruelty. We as a species are capable of the noblest of actions while we remain the only species capable of extreme cruelty to our own.

FOOT NOTE

Last Sunday President Garth Perkin attended the D9700 Presidents meeting in Temora.  Garth tells us that he found out a few new and interesting ideas during the meeting of the 40 club Presidents from D 9700.

MEETING MONDAY NOVEMBER 3rd. 2014

Tonight we had a meeting on membership led by Leslie Weston our Membership Director.

The meeting was well attended with some 12 members and three guests.  Ian Jennings has returned form his trip to Europe looking very relaxed good to see Ian back.

Leslie outlined some plans to attract new members and to retain our current members.

The membership committee met prior to the meeting and Leslie put to our members that we should have a Rotary Interest BBQ before Christmas.  We set on a date being Friday 5th December and Garth Perkin kindly offered Marg and his home as the venue.  Catering will be organised by Leslie and paid for by the club.

Leslie asked all members present to provide her with a list of those whom we feel would enjoy an evening getting to know Coolamon Rotarians.  Please get these names to Leslie by Saturday.   The conduct of the night is still to be determined by the membership committee but it will include live music.  Leslie feels that we need to ask several of the younger generation along as well as those in an older age group.

All in a very positive meeting and one that will help us to grow as a club.

Ian Jennings challenged some of our male members to support Movember.  There were several takers including President Garth, Wayne Lewis, maybe even Grahame Miles!!!

Next Monday night is our AGM and we need all of our members to attend if possible.  The AGM will be followed by the November board meeting.

On Wednesday 12th November there is a markets committee meeting at Grahame Miles home.

On Monday 15th December our last meeting for 2014 we have Scott Martin from the Coolamon Shire Council Health and Building as our guest speaker.

RIP Gary’s November Message:

Four months into this year of working to Light Up Rotary, I am more excited about Rotary than ever before. I’ve been to 22 countries, visited dozens of cities, and met thousands of Rotarians. I’ve seen amazing projects and been inspired over and over again by the terrific work Rotarians do all over the world. And I’ve been privileged to be part of all kinds of Rotary events, from club meetings to Rotary institutes, from Rotary Days to Foundation dinners.

Every event is memorable. I feel especially honored when I am invited to share in club celebrations. To me, taking part in a Rotary club celebration as Rotary International president is like being invited to a family event as an honored guest. Indeed, Rotary is the biggest family in the world.

A fighter pilot walks into a bar and takes a seat next to a very attractive woman.

He gives her a quick glance then casually looks at his new Apple watch for a moment.

The woman notices this and asks, Is your date running late?

No, he replies, I just got this state-of-the-art Apple watch, and I was just testing it.

The intrigued woman says, A state-of-the-art watch? What’s so special about it?

The pilot says, It uses alpha waves to talk to me telepathically.

The lady says, OK, What’s it telling you now?

Well, it says you’re not wearing any panties.

The woman giggles and replies, Well it must be broken because I am wearing panties!

The fighter pilot smirks, taps his watch and says, Bloody thing’s an hour fast!

And that, my friends………is Confidence!

ROTARY INFORMATION

Four hundred citizens in northeast China received free cataract surgeries in 2013 thanks to efforts by the Rotary Clubs of Warner Robins, Georgia, USA, and Shanghai, China.

Seeing an elderly Tibetan woman weep with joy when cataract surgery restored her vision after 10 years is the kind of moment Dave Razo will never tire of.

For several summers Razo, a member of the Rotary Club of Warner Robins, Georgia, USA, traveled to rural northwest China with a team from Georgia-based nonprofit Gansu Inc., to provide free sight-restoring cataract surgery to some of the country’s poorest residents. In 2012, after 22 years and 6,000 successful procedures, Gansu’s founder, ophthalmologist William Conrad, retired and discontinued the organization’s operations.

But Razo didn’t want the effort to end. He had seen how life-changing the surgery could be, not only for the patients but for their families and their community.

OCTOBER IS VOCATIONAL SERVICES  MONTH

The Concept of Vocational Service:

The Object of Rotary is a philosophical statement of Rotary’s purpose and the responsibilities of Rotarians. The concept of vocational service is rooted in the Second Object, which calls on Rotarians to “encourage and foster”:

• High ethical standards in business and professions
• The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations
• The dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society
As a Rotarian, how can you put these ideals into action? Consider these suggestions:
• Talk about your vocation in your club, and take time to learn about fellow members’
vocations.
• Use your professional skills to serve a community.
• Practice your profession with integrity, and inspire others to behave ethically through
your own words and actions.
• Help a young person achieve his or her career aspirations.
• Guide and encourage others in their professional development.

If you do any of these things, you are performing vocational service. And if vocational service  motivates and energizes you, then you’re in the right place, because vocational service is the very essence of Rotary. It is what sets Rotary apart from other service organizations.

We had a workshop on fund raising tonight with 13 members and one guest in Bruce Spinks from Wollundry Grove Olives and a member of the Rotary Club of Wollundry.

PE Wayne Lewis conducted the workshop with help from John Glassford.  We discussed many aspects of fund raising and established several causes that we have supported in the past and ones that we will look at supporting in the future.

The members provided some excellent ideas and ways to raise funds for our causes in the future.  A minute will be prepared and sent to all of our members.  We looked at our local community needs, National and International causes.

Causes included:

Education programmes in all three categories

Australian Rotary Health Fund and Mental Health in particular.

Organ Donation

Disaster Aid

Legacy Australia and the Mount Kenya Climb.

The Shire Community Fund

The Bike Track for Coolamon

There were too many fund raising ideas to list here and an interesting one discussed was the Internet and Crowd Funding.

All in all a very productive night and thanks go to Wayne Lewis for organising the night.  Good fellowship followed which included a serious fine for Grahame Miles below:

Rotary International President Gary C.K. Huang takes part in a chess tournament held at Seyhan Andadolu High School. The tournament included 592 participants from four different age groups.

 On World Polio Day, October 24th, let us remember Dr. Jonas Salk and Dr. Albert Sabin who gave us the first safe and effective polio vaccine.

Last week, 44 Year 10 students from St Anne’s Temora, Temora High School, Ardlethan Central School and Ariah Park Central School attended the annual Rotary Mock Interview evening. This event is aimed at giving students the opportunity to be interviewed and discuss their potential career path with local professionals in that field. We had budding doctors, teachers, electricians, lawyers, veterinarians and many more attend! Thank you to the teachers and students for attending, and of course to the industry mentors who gave up their time to assist in this successful program.

The visit to Oloimugi gets more and more intriguing here is a snippet from their leader Armicus on what to expect:

Walk around the village seeing the best that we offer . Talk of our learning centre. bee-hive zone,  shields and artifacts’ room among others. Do yourself some favor by grabbing  nice bead-work from our  loaded craft shop. The purchase goes all the way to develop this eco-tourism bakery.  And yes..buy and get an extra gift..yay!  You are still to see many things..

Relax!!!!!you are at home “OLOIMUGI MAASAI VILLAGE”..Next is a series of activities that you are going to plunge in..Fascinating..learn about how Maasai used to hunt for food in times of drought and famine when their livestock was unproductive. Here, you see how a donkey was masked skillfully to look like an oryx.  This is what we could call “stalking”   This way, a person could go to a “nose-mouth’  distance near the target hunt. You see the whole activity practically..Interesting. Isnt’t it?  NB-No kill is practiced.

OCTOBER IS VOCATIONAL SERVICES  MONTH

A Rotary team boards the Africa Mercy, a 500-foot floating hospital, to provide a stream of care and compassion to ports of call.

This Rotary Foundation Vocational Training Team is the first to serve under Rotary’s partnership with the nonprofit Mercy Ships. Rotary District 7690 in North Carolina, USA, sponsored the team with a packaged grant, part of the new Rotary grant model that launched worldwide 1 July. The team’s five members will train Guinean health professionals at the two national hospitals.

The Africa Mercy, a 500-foot oceangoing hospital ship, is docked in Conakry for a 10-month medical mission. The Mercy Ships staff and visiting experts, such as this team, will tackle a range of tasks, including setting up medical and dental clinics, conducting health screenings, performing surgeries on board, and conducting health care outreach throughout the country. The ship also will serve as a steel-hulled security blanket.

MEETING MONDAY OCTOBER 20th. 2014

The meeting last night attracted 14 of our members and two guests in Helen Lewis and PP Ray Foley.  Our speaker was President Garth Perkin on his life and times.  Garth as always had an interesting story to tell of his youth and upbringing.   We learnt about his early days and his desire to travel and learn.  Garth and Marg have been to South Africa, Cambodia and now Marg is in China.

Garth expressed his belief that Rotary does amazing work in allowing Rotarians to travel and enjoy the culture of other nations while doing good work for our fellow human beings.

St Mary’s’ Ben Waters in the Australian Trucking Association Safety Truck during the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Program at the Maryborough Showgrounds.

SIXTEEN-year-old Rachael Lewis had an eye-opening experience at the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Program held at the Maryborough showgrounds.

The student, who is on her learner’s permit, attended the last of the three-day program on Thursday and gained something that no driving instructor could teach.

“We went inside a truck to observe the blind spots on the rear view mirrors and I now know why we have to keep a safe distance from trucks because it’s not easy for them to spot small cars,” she said.

The program by members of Rotary Club gave Year 11 students practical workshops to change the way they think about road safety.

The Mentalist

Tony and Sharon were both patients in a mental hospital. One day while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool, Tony suddenly jumped into the deep end. He sank to the bottom of the pool and stayed there. Sharon promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom, pulled Tony out and brought him to his room.

When the hospital director became aware of Sharon’s heroic act, she immediately ordered that Sharon be discharged from the hospital because she now considered Sharon to be mentally stable. She went to Sharon and said, “I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that you’re being discharged because you responded so rationally to a crisis.

By jumping in the pool to save the life of another patient, you displayed sound mindedness. The bad news is that Tony, the patient you saved, hung himself in his bathroom with his bathrobe belt right after you saved him. I am so sorry, but he’s dead.” Sharon replied, “He didn’t hang himself. I put him there to dry. How soon can I go home?”

When asked to describe his future, a refugee child from Iraq draws a picture of himself as a doctor. Another child uses colorful paints to depict happy memories of his former life in Iraq. Both children are among the 200,000 displaced Iraqis who now live in Jordan, a country that has become a safe haven for those fleeing oppression and war in neighboring Palestine, Syria, and Iraq.

Alexandra Dawley, a former volunteer with the Collateral Repair Project in Jordan, emphasizes how something as simple as an art project can help young refugees adjust to their new lives in a foreign country. With the support of Rotary clubs across Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, and the help of teenage refugee volunteers in Jordan, Dawley implemented a children’s’ art program to give refugee children a creative outlet for their dreams and ambitions.

NAIROBI (Reuters) – A rare northern white rhino has died in Kenya, a wildlife conservancy said on Saturday, leaving just six of the animals left alive and bringing the famed African species one step closer to extinction.

While there are thousands of southern white rhinos still roaming the plains of sub-Saharan Africa, decades of rampant poaching have drastically cut northern white rhino numbers.

Suni, a 34-year-old who was the first northern white rhino to be born in captivity, was found dead on Friday by rangers at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, about 250 km (155 miles) north of Nairobi.

The conservancy said Suni was not poached, but the cause of his death was unclear.

On Saturday several members of our club operated the chocolate wheel as part of the annual hospital fete in Coolamon and Ganmain. Here are some photos:

Last night PDG Fred Loneragan and PP John Glassford gave a presentation to a combined meeting of the Griffith Rotary Clubs in Griffith at the EX services Cub.  There was a good crowd of Griffith Rotarians and their partners.  PP Peter Sparks from Griffith Avanti looks like joining the climb, Peter climbed Kilimanjaro with us in 2007.  There were also several others in the audience who are interested in joining the Safari Team.

It was also Hat Day for the Australian Rotary Heath Fund and we all had to wear a hat.

A garden Party sponsored by Wagga Sunrise has raised $4600 for research into Mental Health. As part of HATDAY a group got together and approached Sunrise to be the sponsor, and using a quilt donated by Kim Nash they have been able to ale a substantial contribution to mental Health and at the same time have a great afternoon.

Once in USA a plane crashed, only a monkey who was traveling in the plane was left alive. Fortunately the monkey was intelligent enough to understand our language and reply in actions. The officials went to see the monkey in the hospital and had a talk with the monkey.

ROTARY’S WOMEN OF ACTION

As I sat in the audience at the White House on 7 October, listening to 10 amazing Rotary women tell the stories of their volunteer efforts, two quotes kept running through my mind. First, “Be the change you wish to be in the world” (Mahatma Gandhi) and second, “Never underestimate the power of a small group of people to change the world. In fact, it is the only way it ever has” (Margaret Mead).

In fact, these 10 women took these two quotes, put them together and created projects, foundations, and fundraising efforts that changed their world and the world of others. It struck me that all of their efforts started with one woman who saw a need, a problem, and then went about addressing the situation. They didn’t get permission, they didn’t write a business plan; they just got busy. They were brave and courageous as they stepped out to make a difference. And as their idea grew into reality, they realized that they couldn’t do it alone. That’s where their Rotary club members, their networks, and our Rotary Foundation, came into play.

SEPTEMBER IS NEW GENERATIONS MONTH

Rotaractor Luke Addison has launched a new community hub at Winchester University dedicated to spreading peace and goodwill around the world. He got the idea after meeting Archbishop Desmond Tutu at an international peace conference in June, organised by the international peace education programme, PeaceJam.

An exclusive screening of a film about the life story of Archbishop Tutu was shown at the launch, which was held on Sunday to coincide with the International Day of Peace.

Luke is halfway to raising £40,000 towards the cost of funding the project, which will host regular conferences aimed at young people in Hampshire and host visits from leading human rights specialists. It is hoped that the hub will operate at least four days a week for a three year trial period.

Luke is leader of the Rotaract club at Winchester University, which has underwritten £15,000 to support the first conference and the venture has also been supported with funds from Winchester Rotary Club.

MEETING MONDAY SEPTEMBER 29th. 2014

 District Governor David Kennedy from the Rotary Club of Blayney visits Coolamon.

Last night our DG David joined us for the annual Governor’s visit to the clubs in District 9700.  David met with the board prior to the meeting to outline his goals for this Rotary year.  We had three partners join us in Susan Glassford, Marg Perkin and Christine Lorraine. Also in attendance was Assistant Governor Alan Sharp from Wagga Wagga Sunrise Rotary.

David encouraged us to lighten up and enjoy Rotary.  David’s main message was to increase membership by 5% this and every year.  David invited us to heed the message from our Rotary International President Gary Huang to light one candle each by asking one person to join us.

David also encouraged us to continue to contribute to our Foundation to help fight the disease of polio of which we are this close to eradicating world wide with our partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.  See a full story on polio in the bulletin below.

A man uses a tablecloth to fend off snakes scattered in a tax department office in Basti, Lucknow. Two farmers fed up with alleged bribery demands emptied three bags filled with 40 slithering snakes.  One way to deal with the Taxation Department!

The Fish

The warden catches Seamus leaving the vicinity of the reservoir with a bucket of fish. “Aha! I’ve caught you poachin’ fish red-handed,” says the warden. “What do you mean, red-handed?” says Seamus.

“You’ve got a bucket full of ’em right there. You can’t talk your way out of it this time.” “Oh, you don’t understand,” says Seamus, “I’ve not poached a thing. These are me pet fish. I bring ’em to the reservoir once a week for exercise. After they’ve had a good swim, they come back to the bucket and we go back home.”

“Do ya expect me to believe such a tale?” “I can prove it.” say Seamus. So they walk back to the reservoir and Seamus dips the bucket in and the fish swim away. They stand in silence for 20, 30, 40 minutes…no sign of the fish coming back to the pail.

Ha, ya lying rogue! shouts the warden. “Where are your fish?” “What fish?”

It’s much less expensive to prevent disease than it is to treat disease.

For example, take a look at polio. To date, US$11 billion has been invested to stop ‪polio‬. Of that, governments worldwide have contributed about $9 billion. Other major contributors are ‎Rotary ‬International and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

GPEI Funding Requirements 2013-2018

It is estimated by the GPEI* that the budget required to continue the fight against polio for 2013-2018 is US$5.5 BILLION.  The short fall after the committed funds of US$1.8  BILLION is currently at US$3.7 BILLION.  However it’s estimated that once the burden of polio is lifted, global benefits of $40-50 billion will accrue over the next couple of decades.

*GPEI is made up of the World Health Organisation, Centre for Disease Control, UNICEF and Rotary International.

What is this adventure?

Can you imagine what it is like to stand on one of the highest mountains in Africa?  To spend the day at a mountain lake carved by glaciers?  To gaze across one of the longest, continually inhabited countries in the world? Join the Coolamon and Wagga Wagga Sunrise Rotary Clubs of Australia on the Mount Kenya 2015 ANZAC Day Climb, and you’ll experience all this and more! This 14-day adventure will push you to your limits and be more rewarding than you ever imagined. Over 7 days, you will pass through five different climatic zones, with amazing views across the endless, grassy plains of East Africa and Mount Kenya’s amazing topography. Your efforts on this amazing adventure will allow Rotary to continue our work in Kenya and South Africa, as well to support Legacy Australia on this Centenary of ANZAC Day.

“We are going to have to figure out what it means to be a human being on earth at a time when every living system is declining, and the rate of decline is accelerating. Kind of a mind-boggling situation­ but not one peer-reviewed paper published in the last thirty years can refute that statement. Basically, the earth needs a new operating system, we are the programmers, and we need it within a few decades.

This planet came with a set of operating instructions, but we seem to have misplaced them. Important rules like don’t poison the water, soil, or air, and don’t let the earth get overcrowded, and don’t touch the thermostat, have been broken. Buckminster Fuller said that spaceship earth was so ingeniously designed that no one has a clue that we are on one, flying through the universe at a million miles per hour, with no need for seatbelts, lots of room in coach, and really good food…but all that is changing.

RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment) is a 3 day camp and program for Year 9 high school students. The aim is to communicate to these young people a series of ideas, problems and social experiences which will assist them in forming their own values and moral standards, and also to broaden their horizons culturally, socially and academically. –

MEMBERS OUT AND ABOUT

On Sunday night a few of us joined David and Cherie Benn on their property to burn the olive cuttings.  it was an event supported by the members of the Rotary Club of Wollundry.   David Been is a good friend of Coolamon Rotary.   The burning was followed by the Wagga Wagga Mens’ Rugby Choir with two of our members in the  choir Garth Perkin and Don Dyce.  A good night of fellowship and money was raised for Riverina Blue Bell and do not be afraid to ask those close to you “Are You OK”.

CHEESE

PP Barry Lillywhite and son Anton Green addressed a large gathering at our club last night.  Barry and Anton outlined the proposed establishment of a Cheese Factory in Coolamon.   There were 44 guests and members including visitors from Melbourne.  Speaking in support of the venture was Carol Druce from the June Licorice and Chocolate Factory.

Coolamon Cheese Company’s vision is to resurrect the original 1921 Coolamon Co-operative society building and house within it a specialised tourism, education and cheese production facility.

Cheese maker and Director Barry Lillywhite and Managing Director Anton Green join newly appointed Director Neil Druce of Junee Licorice and Chocolate factory in this exciting venture which will be a real boost to the local community and region as a whole.

Please would all members check the diary below as there have been some changes to the programme.

Next week is a partners night for the visit of District Governor David Kennedy.

Our “Moo Poo” working bee day was held on Saturday, much to the delight of many local gardeners! All funds raised go back into the community and other chosen charities. Thank you our Community Service Director, Michael Reagan, for organising another successful day and to all who assisted. ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

Winker

A man with a winking problem is applying for a position as a sales representative for a large firm. The interviewer looks over his papers and says, “This is phenomenal. You’ve graduated from the best schools; your recommendations are wonderful, and your experience is unparalleled. Normally, we’d hire you without a second thought. However, a sales representative has a highly visible position, and we’re afraid that your constant winking will scare off potential customers. I’m sorry…we can’t hire you.”

“But wait,” he said. “If I take two aspirin, I’ll stop winking!”

“Really? Great! Show me!”

So the applicant reaches into his jacket pocket and begins pulling out all sorts of condoms: red condoms, blue condoms, ribbed condoms, flavored condoms; finally, at the bottom, he finds a packet of aspirin. He tears it open, swallows the pills, and stops winking.

“Well,” said the interviewer, “that’s all well and good, but this is a respectable company, and we will not have our employees womanizing all over the country!”

“Womanizing? What do you mean? I’m a happily married man!”

“Well then, how do you explain all these condoms?”

“Oh, that,” he sighed. “Have you ever walked into a pharmacy, winking, and asked for aspirin?”

ROTARY PEACE CENTERS SHAPE HUNDREDS OF CAREERS IN PEACE AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION

With bloody conflicts raging in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and parts of Central Africa, the message of nonviolence and reconciliation that nations worldwide will observe on 21 September demands more urgent and collective attention.

In 2001 the United Nations designated the September date as an annual International Day of World Peace “to be observed as a day of global ceasefire and nonviolence” according to a General Assembly resolution.

The day’s devotion to peace connects closely with what Rotary members have been fostering since The Rotary Foundation’s mission to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace, was proclaimed in 1917.

MOUNT KENYA 2015 ANZAC DAY CLIMB

This will be a permanent section for the next 12 months in our weekly bulletin and I will update stories to this article as and when we get them.   The Australian Commonwealth Department of Veterans Affairs have approved our application to be part of the Centenary for ANZAC and we are allowed to use the logo below with some rules on it’s use:

Planning is well under way now and we are getting various members of the climb, the safari and our supporters working on ways of fund raising for the adventure.  One idea is for a Rockathon at The Rock.  An idea given to me by the late Bill Inness of our club.  We are also looking at crowd funding via the Internet.

One of the three beneficiaries is our Orphan Rescue Kits where we sponsor girls and boys who are vulnerable and at risk into High School and hopefully beyond to University.  One such recipient is Tracy Monica Ochieng from the Mathare area of Nairobi.  Tracy is now in a High School in Kisumu and is doing very well:

MONDAY 22nd. SEPTEMBER INTERNATIONAL PEACE DAY

We have a wonderful opportunity to work with Roots and Shoots and Dr Dame Jane Goodall in partnership with the Oloimugi Traditional Maasai Eco-village providing a hand up for education, basic literacy and wild life conservation.  A great way for Rotary to promote peace, good will and mutual understanding of culture.  More news as we develop this project further.  It started with a water tank, a lap top computer and a web site.  It is driven by one Maasai Moran Armicus Mayan Olesenteria who is passionate about his people and the conservation of the wild life in his area of the Laikipia Plateau, North of Mount Kenya.

“I am happy to be connected with the UN ambassador of peace, Dr. Jane Goodall in my village Oloimugi traditional Maasai ecovillage, where we are partnering with her organization Roots and Shoots Kenya. I believe that much positive is yet to follow and her input will actually transform my Maasai community.

Let us embrace each other and help those who are disadvantaged in life since peace is not only the absence of war but the presence of retrogressive ailments like poverty, drought/famine and diseases……..”
