Happy 40th From our Centennial Twin Club in South Africa

The Centennial Twin Club Banner
President Patrick McLaughlin Hout Bay Rotary Club

President Patrick McLaughlin from our Twin Centennial Rotary Club Hout Bay in South Africa sent this very special greeting to us:

Dear President Ian and Coolamon members,

My wonderful wife has got me up to the office and to write this message to all our Coolamon friends in Australia. There’s something a triple by-pass operation teaches you and that is the value of Rotary friendship which stretches across the world. All day, every day I have had Rotary friendship and over the years Rotarian John has been a very special friend, climbing his mountains and working Rotary with such great enthusiasm.  It means a lot to me to write this message.

Coolamon has special values for us all here in Rotary Club of Hout Bay because you are our twinned club and there are not too many twinned clubs in the world today. It represents a special partnership, plus the fact that South Africans and Australians are also special people, anyway.

When you drive out of our home town here there is the biggest sign on our local clinic on the Main Road which says “Coolamon House”, so your message is here big time, all the time. May that message also always declare our friendship and common values.

We wish you a happy celebration from each one of our members here and we shall toast Rotary Club of Coolamon at our Tuesday meeting.

Good on all of you.  Regards in Rotary.

Patrick McLaughlin  President  Rotary Club of Hout Bay

District 9700 Assembly 2011-2012

DGE Ian Simpson with Wollundry President Frank Fuller

Last weekend we had our district assembly and training for the new boards of our clubs.

Our incoming District Governor is Ian Simpson and supported by his wife Jean Simpson.  The assembly was held at Grenfell and 300 or so Rotarians from our district were in attendance.

The main message was that we have to change as change is essential not an option for us to go forward.

DGE Ian gave those present 4 goals to aim for in the upcoming Rotary Year:

  1. Retain current membership
  2. Accent on Club, Community, Vocational, Youth and Foundation/International Service.
  3. Leave a legacy for Rotary Coolamon in our area.
  4. Have Fun!

Here are some photographs from the most enjoyable day spent in Grenfell.

Millie Butt is Home from Belgium

WELCOME HOME MILLIE!

Our Marrar Rotary Exchange Student Millie Butt has returned home from 12 months in Belgium.  By all accounts Millie had a great time and will be giving a talk to our club in the near future.  We at Coolamon Rotary are extremely proud of Millie’s achievements in Belgium and Europe and we know that Millie did herself, our club and Australia proud in representing Coolamon in Belgium.  We look forward to Millie’s talk.

Samoa 2010

We visited Samoa over Christmas and enjoyed the experience.

It was a fellow Rotarian on ROTI Rotarians on the internet who suggested that we go to Samoa, thanks Marco:

ROTI

Being a Rotarian gives you contacts all around the world and Marco Kappenberger enabled us to see Samoa with lunches and a breakfast with fellow Rotarians.   We also visited the areas most damaged by the tsunami in 2009.  It was also our pleasure to be invited to a fund raising night for the new pre-school there.  I hope that we will be able to help them with this project in 2011.  More on this later:

The photos below also show where we stayed and what the tsunami did to Samoa.  The last two pics on teh tsunami road developments show what they have achieved in rebuilding on higher ground.  In only 15 months they have achieved an enormous amount.

COOLAMON ROTARY CHRISTMAS PARTY

This year our Christmas party was at President Ian’s home with catering done by Marg and Christine and others.

We also had the happy occassion of inducting our two new members Leslie Weston and  Paul Weston.  So we finished the year on a high note and we wish Leslie and Paul all the best in their association with Rotary and the Coolamon Rotary Club.

VISITING ROTARIAN

Rotarian John McKenny from Glen INnes

It not often we receive visiting Rotarians, however recently John McKenny has made up at our club and John is from the Rotary Club of Glen Innes.

John is working in the Coolamon Shire at the moment and we have enjoyed John’s company.

Guthrie Fund Raising Day in Coolamon

Coolamon and Lions Presidents in harmony!

Left Coolamon Rotary President Ian and Coolamon Lions President Neil cooking up a storm

Last week Narelle and Greg Guthrie from Coolamon lost all their possessions and their home in a house fire.

Rotary and Lions from Coolamon along with many other Coolamon groups organised a fund raising day to help the Guthries.  There was a bowls tournament, golf match, BBQ, childrens’ slide, musicians from Coolamon and the famous Rotary Chocolate Wheel in action.  On top of this the Coolamon Fire Brigade were there supporting the day along with many Coolamon folk and residents of the Coolamon Shire.

The day was a wonderful example of how a small town looks after it’s own in times of strife.
