MEETING October 8th. 2012

This evening was a business meeting and we got through a lot of  club business.  The minutes will be distributed as soon as possible.

Thanks to Henk Hulsman for catering and for the Kranztki sausages, Dutch potatoes and Dutch cabbage.  All delicious.

NEXT Monday Night 15th October

To all who read this bulletin you are cordially invited to Coolamon this Monday to hear what is next for Africa.

The talk is entitled Road MAPS to Africa Yesterday Today Tomorrow.

As  a prelude to next Monday  night on Africa by PDG Fred Loneragan and John Glassford here are some comments from the beneficiaries of the Mountains of the Moon Climb in 2011.  Last week RAWCS distributed around $40,000 that was raised as a result of the climb to the 4 beneficiaries.

Dear John
Thank you very much.We have just been informed by Stanbic Bank in Kasese that the $6,915.20 have already been credited on BMCF account in Uganda.
I want to express our deepest gratitude to you and all our Rotary friends in your area. Please, convey our deep gratitude to every one.We are very proud of of your great and generous support for our ministry among children and the clinic.
More information will follow later.
Regards

+ Zebedee

Our Treasurer Roy Graham has told me that your very kind donation amounting to R 56,516,97 has come in to our account. Thank you so much for your continued work on our behalf. You are friends indeed.

This is an absolute lifeline for us given our problems with Foundation and the matching grant. We shall put this toward the defibrilator for which we are awaiting a pro forma invoice or solid quote and as you know, this is a permitted item under the rules and will offset substantially the amount owing.

Patrick has to submit a progress report to Foundation in the immediate future and this will read well. Needless to say, our objective is to get the whole thing settled off and to get us all back in the good books with the Matching Grant people.

I expect that Patrick will be writing to you if he has not done so already. But from me as the President and on behalf of the Board I thank you and the Rotary Club of Coolamon.

Kind regards  Peter Dutton

President Rotary Hout Bay

John, hello and hope you are well! Even though I am officially on maternity leave I had to sneak into my office to send a big note of thanks for your wonderful donation of 7k plus! How wonderful!

With your blessings we would love the money to go toward paying for our non academic staff-who keep the school running behind the scenes.

I hope you all had a wonderful trek and thanks again for never forgetting about our school.

Best wishes, Gemma

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT SAKUJI TANAKA

I paid a visit to the Rotary Club of Beijing, my first to a Chinese Rotary club, and I was encouraged by the active involvement of its members in numerous service projects. The president of the Rotary Club of Shanghai was also present. 北京ロータリークラブを訪問いたしました。奉仕活動を盛んに行っているクラブです。上海のクラブからも会長さんが駆けつけてくださいました。大変お世話になりありがとうございました。

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

Eleven people were hanging on a rope under a helicopter, ten men and one woman. The rope was not strong enough to carry them all, so they decided that one has to drop off, otherwise they are all going to fall. They were not able to choose that person, but then the woman made a very touching speech. She said that she would voluntarily let go of the rope, because as woman she was used to giving up everything for her husband and kids, and for men in general, without ever getting anything in return. As soon as she finished her speech, all the men started clapping their hands.

Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn’t seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps: “My friend is dead! What can I do?” The operator says: “Calm down, I can help. First, let’s make sure he’s dead.” There is a silence, then a shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says: “OK, now what?”

Arsenic? Jane walked into a pharmacy, strolled over to the counter, and caught the pharmacist’s attention. “Can I please get some arsenic?” she asked. “Arsenic? What do you want arsenic for?” asked the pharmacist. “It’s for my husband,” she replied. “Your husband?” exclaimed the pharmacist, “I hope you don’t mean what I think you mean!” She just nodded. “Well, lady,” he replied, “I’m an honest man. I can’t sell you arsenic, I wouldn’t if I could, and I don’t know what made you think you could just stroll into a respectable store and expect me me to sell you arsenic.!” She didn’t say a word. She just reached into her purse, fished out a photograph, and handed it across the counter. It was a picture of her husband, in bed with the pharmacist’s wife. Slowly the pharmacist looks up, over the counter, and then straight at her. “Lady,” he said, “why didn’t you tell me you had a prescription?”

OCTOBER IS VOCATIONAL SERVICES MONTH

Michigan club gives students a chance to explore their dream jobs

A vocational service program conducted by the Rotary Club of St. Joseph & Benton Harbor, Michigan, USA, is helping junior and senior high school students develop careers by connecting them with mentors who are leaders in industry. Participants are selected by their schools and given the opportunity to explore their professional interests with behind-the-scenes visits to area businesses. They also meet one-on-one with mentors, who share their experiences and advise the students on how best to pursue their dream careers. Since the club launched the mentoring program in 2008, Rotarians have put more than 300 students in touch with professionals including lawyers, doctors, a Fortune 500 CEO, broadcast journalists, police officers, and a professional football player. Two Rotarians accompany each student who meets with a professional. The students are then required to report on their experiences at a meeting of the Rotary club. “This program leverages Rotary’s amazing network of professionals to help young people connect with their career interests,” says Jackie Huie, program chair and president of the St. Joseph & Benton Harbor club. “We have not had a vocation that we couldn’t find for a student.” The experience gives teenagers a chance either to reinforce their career choices or to rethink them, says Huie. Teri LaForest, a senior and a 2012 program participant, wanted to become a meteorologist. The club organized a meeting with a meteorologist at the local TV station. After the visit, LaForest concluded that that job might not be for her but that she still had a passion for environmental science.

MEETING October 2nd. 2012

Junee Rotary Club Joint Meeting

Normally we would not be meeting on a long weekend, however we had a very good reason to go to Junee on Tuesday evening.  Past President of our club Dick Jennings nominated Past President Roger Quine from the Junee Rotary Club to receive a Paul Harris Fellow Sapphire Pin.   The nomination was endorsed unanimously by our members.  Dick said that Roger was and still is an outstanding supporter of our club, and has been for many years.  So President Paul Weston, Dick Jennings, Ian Jennings and John Glassford attended this meeting and presentation.

Paul called Roger up and presented the PHF Sapphire to Roger, Dick also spoke in support of the award and all present congratulated Roger on his award.  Roger was extremely surprised and very humble in accepting his PHF Sapphire.  Fay Quine told us that she had a huge blister on her tongue from having to keep the secret from Roger.  Making it even harder was the fact that the Quine’s were expecting news of the imminent birth of a great grand child.  Fay told us during the meeting that indeed a great grand child had been born during the meeting.

Thanks go to Dick for his foresight in honouring Roger in this manner.  It is indeed very rare for a Rotary club to award a member in another Rotary club a Paul Harris Fellow.  Well deserved Roger and thanks for all your wonderful support over the years, from all of our members.

PRESIDENT PAUL WESTON’S REPORT

Despite the long weekend, it was another busy week in Rotaryland.  The Mens’ Shed of Coolamon organised the first ever Scarecrow Festival in town, which brought antique cars and hundreds of visitors to listen to the music and visit the various stalls on offer.  The more adventurous opted for helicopter rides which ran for most of the day.  Coolamon Rotary was on the scene, rolling out the food van for the first time in several years and cooking up Kranskys and footlong hotdogs.  Toward the end of the afternoon, I presented the winner of the live scarecrow contest with a certificate and check for $300, which Rotary ponied up to help fund the event.  Judging from the size of the crowd and the happy faces, this event will become a regular feature on the Coolamon event calendar.

Kay Hull with the best scarecrow and Paul

We had no meeting this week because of the public holiday, but four of us (John G., Dick, Ian J. and I) travelled to Junee on Tuesday evening to share fellowship with the Junee Rotary Club and to present Roger Quine with a Paul Harris Sapphire badge.  It was a touching to see Roger’s reaction to the surprise presentation; according to those that know Roger, it was one of the few times that Roger was left nearly speechless.  It was a very nice evening, and both clubs expressed interest in getting together more often.

Watch this space for details on the digital marketing workshop that Coolamon Rotary is organising for the 22nd of October for local business owners and operators (an co-sponsored by Coolamon Shire).  Also, don’t forget about the business meeting scheduled for 8 October.

That’s all for now.  Onward and upward!.

Yours in Rotary,

Paul

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT SAKUJI TANAKA

Polio eradication was discussed at a special event during the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, 27 September. I encourage you to visit Rotary’s End Polio Now website and to sign the petition urging world leaders to help bridge the funding gap. Every little show of support helps, and this is a fight that we cannot afford to lose.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

After becoming very frustrated with the attitude of one of the shopkeepers, the young blonde declared, ‘Well, then, maybe I’ll just go out and catch my own alligator and get a pair of alligator shoes for free!’ The shopkeeper replied with a sly smile, ‘Well, little lady, why don’t you go on and give it a try?’

The blonde headed off to the swamp, determined to catch an alligator. Later in the day, as the shopkeeper was driving home, he spotted the same young woman standing waist deep in the murky water, shotgun in hand.

As he brought his car to a stop, he saw a huge 9-foot gator swimming rapidly toward her. With lightning reflexes, the blonde took aim, shot the creature and hauled it up onto the slippery bank. Nearby were 7 more dead gators all lying belly up. The shopkeeper stood on the bank, watching in silent amazement as the blonde struggled mightily and barely managed to flip the gator onto its back.

Then, rolling her eyes heavenward, she screamed in frustration…..

DARN! THIS ONE’S BAREFOOT, TOO!

END POLIO NOW

End Polio Now

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative is a partnership between The World Health Organisation, Rotary International, Centres for Disease Control and UNICEF.   National Immunisation Days or NIDs are days where Rotarians gather to give polio drops.

Jon Deisher form the RC of Anchorage in Alaska, a good friend, has been on these NIDs and here he is below in Chandigahr, Punjab, India … Immunizing children against Polio. “One of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done”.  Jon.

The pie chart and table below go to show and highlight the cost of this project started by Rotary in 1985.  It has been a partnership with many counties from around the world as well as with the other members of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.  So far the cost is over $9 billion.  If you add the voluntary time of countless Rotarians working in the field the amount would be significantly higher.

However there is a large shortfall in funds required to continue with the project to eliminate polio from the face of the earth and it may surprise you to learn just how much is needed to complete the job.  It is going to take countries from around the world to donate large sums of money along with Rotary International and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation .  Bill and Melinda Gates have also contributed over $1 billion to date.

RI President Tanaka announced at the United Nations last week that Rotary will contribute a further $75 million over the next 3 years.

Coolamon Rotary News Bulletin #12

MEETING September 24th. 2012

We had the pleasure of our local Federal Member of Parliament The Hon. Michael McCormack as our guest speaker tonight.  Ten members were present with some 13 guests from Coolamon and Ganmain.  Michael spoke well and entertained us all with is recollections of his time playing “Footy” here in the Riverina.  Michael was also very honest about politics in Australia today and wishes that politicians could think beyond the next election.  Michael also believed in working with the other side and getting on with working for the people that elect them.

Michael even drops in on Simon Crean the Federal Minister for Development on a fortnightly basis to promote the Riverina.  Michael loves the National Party and paid tribute to the former member Kay Hull.  The Nationals he said do not have any factions which he is happy about.   Michael will be on Channel 10’s The Great Divide this Sunday, and opposite him will be Anthony Albanase the current Leader of the House of Representatives.

Michael concluded by inviting any who wish to attend question time in Canberra to contact him a couple of weeks before so he can arrange the visit.

President Paul Weston introduces Michael McCormack above and Garth Perkin thanks Michael for his talk below.

The raffle was won by Bruce Hutcheon from the Coolamon Lions Club.

Michael McCormack

MP MEMBER FOR RIVERINA

About Michael

Born in Wagga and raised on family properties at Marrar and Brucedale, Michael became the youngest editor of a daily newspaper in Australia when he took the helm of Wagga’s Daily Advertiser at the age of 27.

Although he won numerous writing awards and scholarships at the Advertiser, Michael is proudest of the role he played as a community advocate during his time at the paper. In 1997 he spearheaded the movement to save the RAAF base at Wagga which resulted in the retention and expansion of the base.

Michael has a long history of community service with groups such as Rotary and school P&F Associations. A keen sportsman, Michael’s interests include cricket, Aussie Rules, Rugby League, basketball and hockey. He is also a racing enthusiast, and was director of the Murrumbidgee Turf Club from 1994 to 2003.

Before becoming the The Nationals Federal Member for Riverina Michael had a small publishing and media business in Wagga, where he lives with wife Catherine and their three children.

Michael was elected as the Federal Member for Riverina at the 2010 election.

He is an honorary member of the Officer’s Mess at ARTC Kapooka.

PRESIDENT PAUL WESTON’S REPORT

It’s been a busy couple of weeks in the local world of Rotary.  The Wagga Wagga Peace Conference held over the weekend drew distinguished speakers from across Australia and around the world.  It’s too bad more of our members couldn’t attend the proceedings, but Neil Munro, Dick Jennings and John Glassford were there and were suitably impressed (I ran a projector in one of the sessions on Saturday afternoon, and also came away with a very favourable impression).  Congrats to the Rotarians in Wagga who organised this memorable and outstanding event.

On Monday, the Rotary Club of Coolamon and our guests were treated to a talk by the Hon. Michael McCormack, MP for Riverina.  As promised, we were entertained by stories of life in Canberra as an elected representative of Parliament, hearing stories that don’t make it on the evening news.  It was also great to see a number of Lions in attendance.  Stay tuned for news of social get together with the Lions sometime after harvest, likely in January.

The inaugural Scarecrow Festival will be held in Coolamon on Sunday of the upcoming October long weekend.  We’ll be dusting off the food van and serving up Kranskys with all the trimmings.  We’re still looking for helpers to help prepare and serve in the van, especially in the afternoon, so please contact me to add your name to the roster.  There will be a variety of activities for young and old, so make an effort to come out and share in the fun.

We have no meeting on Monday, October 1 because of the public holiday, but we’ll be making a trip to Junee on Tuesday to share fellowship with the Junee Rotarians.  Let John Glassford know if you’re able to attend.  A couple of us will be driving and taking others with us; we’ll contact attendees over the weekend to coordinate rides.

We finally have the next event in our local business support program in place: an evening workshop on the 22nd of October with a digital marketing firm out of Wagga. Look for details in the coming week.

Enjoy the long weekend, and don’t forget to come to the Scarecrow Festival and to sign up for the meeting in Junee.

That’s all for now.  Onward and upward!.

Yours in Rotary,

Paul

Eyesight

Joe and Gladys are getting ready for bed. Gladys is standing in front of her full length mirror, taking a good hard look at herself. ‘You know, Joe,’ she commented, ‘I stare into this mirror and see an ancient creature. My face is all wrinkled, my boobs sag, my arms and legs are as flabby as popped balloons… and my rear end looks like a sad deflated version of the Hindenburg!’

She turned to face her husband and asked, ‘Dear, please tell me just one positive thing about my body so I can feel better about myself.’

Joe studied Gladys critically for a moment and then said in a thoughtful voice, ‘Well, there’s nothing wrong with your eyesight.’

The doctor says he’ll be able to leave hospital in about a week.

The Professor

A man spent a weekend gambling in Las Vegas casinos, and he won $100,000. He didn’t want anyone to know about it, so when he came back home, he immediately went out to the backyard of his house, dug a hole and planted the money in it.

The next morning he walked outside and found only an empty hole. He noticed footsteps leading from the hole to the house next door, which was owned by a deaf-mute. On the same street lived a professor who understood sign language and was a friend of the deaf man. Grabbing his pistol, the enraged man went to awaken the professor and dragged him to the deaf man’s house. He screamed at the professor:

“You tell this guy that if he doesn’t give me back my money I’ll kill him!”

The professor conveyed the message to his friend, and his friend replied in sign language: “I hid it in my backyard, underneath the cherry tree.”

The professor turned to the man with the gun and said: “He’s not going to tell you. He said he’d rather die first.”

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

A busload of politicians were driving down a country road when all of a sudden, the bus ran off the road and crashed into a tree in an old cockie’s paddock.

The old cockie, after seeing what had happened, went over to investigate.

He then proceeded to dig a hole to bury the politicians.

A few days later the local policeman came out, saw the crashed bus, and asked the old cockie where all the politicians had gone.

The old cockie said he had buried them.

The policeman asked the old cockie, “Were they all dead?”

The old cockie replied, “Well, some of them said they weren’t, but I didn’t believe them.”

A man and his ever nagging wife went on vacation to Jerusalem. While they were there, the wife passed away.

The undertaker told the husband, “You can have her shipped home for $5,000 or you can bury her here, in the Holy Land, for $150.”

The man thought about it and told him he would just have her shipped home.

The undertaker asked, “Why would you spend $5,000 to ship your wife home, when it would be wonderful to be buried here and you would spend only $150”.

The man replied, “Long ago a man died here, was buried here, and three days later, he rose from the dead. I just can’t take that chance.”

The aim of Rotary Youth Program for Enrichment is to provide an enriching and challenging experience for Year 9 high school students. The weekend camp is a balance of social interaction, adventures and speakers to assist the students in developing life skills. RYPEN provides students with a wider experience than many have previously had. They interact with Rotarians and their peers from across the District and undertake challenging activities and adventures.

MEETING August 27th. 2012

PRESIDENT PAUL WESTON’S REPORT

Monday’s meeting was a “member’s night” and featured John Burns recounting his life story.  It’s always interesting hearing the twists and turns that one’s life takes, and John’s story was no exception.  Although John grew up in the suburbs of Sydney, he has always identified more with country living, and is much more at home in Coolamon than in the Big Smoke.  We followed John’s progression from boyhood through professional life from industrial arts teacher to head of school, witnessing a variety of clothing styles ranging from 70’s chic through to contemporary, with varying amounts and length of hair.  John and Val’s two children are now married and starting families of their own, which has led to the empty nesters doing a bit of world travel.

One of the more surprising aspects of John’s life is his love of cars, a passion embodied by his restoration of a Datsun 240Z with his son a number of years ago.  John has been involved with service clubs over the years, and it’s great to have John on board as one of the newest members of Coolamon Rotary.  Thanks for sharing your life story, John!  Stay tuned for next month’s instalment, which is scheduled to be provided by Ian Durham (we’re working through the alphabet, and although Craig Corrigan is next on the list, his current leave of absence means we’ll hear his life story at a later data).

A few updates of interest.  Our next meeting with the business owners and shopkeepers in the shire will likely take place in mid-October.  Arrangements are being made to have an outside speaker make a presentation on marketing, so stay tuned.  MP Michael McCormack will be speaking on the 24th of September, which is expected to be a well-attended event.  Don’t forget to check the Bingo roster for next week, and keep the 30th of September in mind since we’ll be running our food van at the Scarecrow Festival organised by the Coolamon Men’s Shed.

That’s all for now.  Onward and upward!.

Yours in Rotary,

Paul

I’m back in Japan for ten days before heading off to Brazil. This is the first time I’ve set foot in Japan since taking office in July, so I’m really enjoying these precious moments with my family. I will also attend the Japan-Korea Goodwill Conference being held in Tokyo on 31 August-1 September, an excellent opportunity to promote Peace Through Service.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

1st Blonde Joke This Year

A blonde walks by a travel agency and notices a sign in the window, “Cruise Special. $99!”

So she goes inside, lays her money on the counter and says, “I’d like the $99 cruise special, please.”

The agent says, “Yes, ma’am.”

He grabs her, drags her into the back room, ties her into a large inner tube, pulls her out the back door and downhill to the river bank, where he pushes her in and sends her floating down the river.

A second blonde comes by a few minutes later, sees the sign, goes inside, lays down her money, and asks for the $99 special.

She too is tied to an inner tube and sent floating down the river. Drifting into stronger current, she eventually catches up with the first blonde.

They float side by side for awhile before the first blonde asks, “Do they serve refreshments on this cruise”?

The second blonde replies, “They didn’t last year.”

ROTARY INFORMATION

SHELTERBOX

This week we look at one of the very best Rotary projects in the world today:

ShelterBox was founded by Tom Henderson OBE, a Rotarian and former Royal Navy search and rescue diver.

He saw that the aid response to most disasters was in the form of food and medicine to help people survive the immediate aftermath.

Little or no assistance was given in terms of proper shelter to help them through the first few days, weeks and months as they tried to rebuild their lives. ShelterBox was launched to fill that void.

In 1999, Tom started researching the idea, sourcing equipment and twisting arms to get the project off the ground. His persistence paid off in April 2000 when ShelterBox was launched and the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard in Cornwall adopted it as its millennium project. Little did they know that it would become the largest Rotary club project in the world, with an ever-growing number of international affiliates.

The first consignment of 143 boxes was sent to earthquake victims in the Indian state of Gujarat in January 2001. Over the next three years the project matured and by the end of 2004 nearly 2,600 boxes had been dispatched, following 16 major disasters. On 26 December 2004, news came of the devastating Indian Ocean Tsunami and ShelterBox faced its most significant challenge, one that would change its course forever. Donations and volunteers poured in and we were able to ramp up our operations on a scale unimaginable just six months earlier.  More below:

Dick Thompson and Neil Munro

Tonight we had the pleasure of listening to Dick Thompson, brother of Bill Thompson a well known local identity.  Dick has lived in Yorkshire for the past 24 years after leaving Coolamon.  Dick like his brother Bill is a lawyer and practices in a small town about 40 minutes drive to Leeds and Sheffield.  Dick met his wife Chris a Yorkshire lass when he went to Alice Springs to play football.   They decided to live in Yorkshire and have two daughters.  Dick gave a lively and most interesting talk on his life as an ex pat living in the Yorkshire couintry side which he describes as being out of an episode of All Creatures Great and Small.

We had 10 members in attendance with our guests Val Burns, Maureen Hulsman, Maree Jennings and Bill Thompson.

Before the Bud Billiken Parade set off, I had the distinct honor of putting my “Peace through Service” pin on the renowned civil rights leader, Rev. Jesse Jackson, with District 6450 Assistant Governor J.N. Settles Sr. looking on. I also got to present my pin to Illinois Governor Pat Quinn. It was a day filled with humbling and inspiring encounters.

Sakuji Tanaka and Jesse Jackson

The Bud Billiken® Parade and Picnic is an annual parade and picnic in Chicago, Illinois, and is the oldest and largest African-American parade in the United States. Since 1929, it has always been held the second Saturday in August. The idea for the parade came from Mr. Robert S. Abbott, the founder of the Chicago Defender. The focus of the parade is education and sounds the clarion call for “Back to School” to our children. It is currently the second largest parade in the United States. The 82d Annual Parade took place on August 13, 2011, and was televised on WLS-TV as well as nationally on WGN-TV and viewed by over 25 million viewers. In August 2012, the second Saturday falls on August 11, 2012. The focus on the parade continues to be the betterment of Chicago’s youth.

PRESIDENT PAUL WESTON’S REPORT

Those in attendance at Monday’s meeting were treated to a very interesting talk by Dick Thompson, brother of Bill and a Coolamon resident currently residing in Yorkshire, England.  Dick described how a two-year stay in Alice Springs 24 years ago turned into a continuing life adventure in England after he met his wife, a pom who was doing a volunteer service gig in Tennant Creek.  One thing led to another and Dick is now living and working in Yorkshire.  Dick considers himself an Aussie, and has made sure his daughters (now in their twenties) make regular visits to Coolamon to spend time with their grandparents.  Although Dick still considers himself a true blue Aussie, he pointed out that he has spent nearly as much of his life in England as in Australia (but he still has a fair dinkum Aussie accent!).  It was a very interesting perspective on living in another country while trying to retain as much of one’s culture and heritage as possible, and sharing that with one’s children.

Next week will provide an opportunity for John Burns to share his life story with the club.  We’ll also spend a bit of time at the meeting reflecting on where we are as a club and where we want to be in the future, so come prepared to do a bit more brainstorming.

The Shop Locally campaign is regaining some momentum, with plans for a voucher book taking shape in time for the Christmas shopping season.  An upcoming weekly meeting will focus specifically on the Shop Locally campaign, and will involve local shop owners; watch this space in the near future for specifics.

That’s all for now.  Onward and upward!.

Yours in Rotary,

Paul

“No, I haven’t. What’s the problem?”
“The lousy cheat ran out of my shop without paying me!”

“Well, yes,” the barber replies. “He’s carrying one of his ears in his left hand.”

ROTARY INFORMATION

RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service)

Volunteers are the lifeblood of RAWCS Projects. Being a RAWCS Volunteer can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life; you can make new friends in other countries and you will form very close bonds with your team members.

Rotary International is an organisation of people who serve their communities around the world in a  range of volunteer roles.

The projects listed on this website are all being managed by members of sponsor Rotary Clubs volunteering their time to do this important community work.

Participation by other Rotarians and by members of the public is also welcome.

If you like to sew or knit, you might like to make dolls for orphans in Africa.  You could sort books as part of a literacy program. Or knit a knee rug for the Wheelchair For Kids Project.  There’s any number of other projects you could volunteer some of your time towards –  a number of RAWCS projects even provide opportunities for volunteers to travel to the project country and work directly on the project.

VISIONING MEETING DINNER JULY 23rd 2012

President Paul welcomed all present and especially John Burns on his return from 2 weeks in China with his wife Val.  They took over 2,000 photos had numerous Chinese banquets and were amazed by all the new technology with wealth and poverty on show, from BMWs to beggars in the streets.  We look forward to hearing about their travels  at a later meeting.

Grahame Miles prepared a list of people we should invite to Linda Tillman’s talk on the 6th August, each member took on individual people to invite personally to the talk by Linda on ‘Marketing the Coolamon Shire’.

Monday the 23rd July also saw the induction of our latest member to join Coolamon Rotary for the new Rotary year 2012-2013.

We welcome Christine Atkinson to our ranks with the classification of Aged Care.

Christine Atkinson

President Paul Weston presents Christine with her member’s dinner badge.

The meeting was entertained by Christine with a short life history.  Originally Christine came from Victoria, and is the eldest grand daughter of 27 grand children!  Christine was introduced to community work by her Mother when she was 8 years old and so begun a life time of community service for Christine.  Christine also spent some time in a convent and went onto to hold many worthwhile jobs in her career of care.  Christine’s work with the Westmead Children’s Hospital as well as her time at Camperdown Children’s Hospital was amongst many highlights in her career.
While working to promote the Ronald MacDonald House at the Children’s Hospital Christine persuaded many Rotary clubs including Parramatta and Holroyd clubs to get this project to completion.  For her work the RC of Holroyd awarded Christine a Paul Harris Fellow.  When Christine took up a position in Wagga Wagga she joined the RC of Wagga Wagga and now that Christine is based in Coolamon she has joined our club, Wagga Wagga’s loss our gain.
President Paul on his welcome to Christine wished her all the best and said that we are all looking forward to working with Christine for our community both local and international.  Christine does have a project that she is working on in Kenya.   We are sure that this will become part of our Road MAPS to Africa Project.
Following Christine’s welcome President Paul conducted an introduction to our Club Visioning exercise.  This is the first of these types of meetings to make sure that we go on and prosper as a club long into the future.  President Paul asked us to consider as way of introduction 5 key questions:
1.  What do we want this club to be recognised for by our Community?
2.  How large do we want our club to grow?
3.  What do we do?
4.  Where do we want to be in 2017?
5.  What needs to be done, by whom and by when?

So I thought that you might all be interested in the following article from the RC of Sydney on “Rotary Means Business Networking” meetings.

The Rotary Means Business networking events are held every two months when 50 – 70 Rotarians and their business associates undertake some serious networking.

The idea behind this networking activity is to gain useful and reliable business contacts, while at the same time opening the door for others to use your services and refer to their friends – in other words, Rotary members helping Rotary members and their associates.

There is no charge to attend. Drinks, including coffee/tea, may be purchased from the bar area of the venue, Castlereagh Boutique Hotel.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

Golfing with an older man

A young man who was also an avid golfer found himself with a few hours to spare one afternoon. He figured if he hurried and played very fast, he could get in nine holes before he had to head home. Just as he was about to tee off an old gentleman shuffled onto the tee and asked if he could accompany the young man as he was golfing alone. Not being able to say no, he allowed the old gent to join him.

To his surprise the old man played fairly quickly. He didn’t hit the ball far, but plodded along consistently and didn’t waste much time. Finally, they reached the 9th fairway and the young man found himself with a tough shot. There was a large pine tree right in front of his ball – and directly between his ball and the green.

After several minutes of debating how to hit the shot the old man finally said, “You know, when I was your age I’d hit the ball right over that tree.”

With that challenge placed before him, the youngster swung hard, hit the ball up, right smack into the top of the tree trunk and it thudded back on the ground not a foot from where it had originally lay.

The old man offered one more comment, “Of course, when I was your age that pine tree was only three feet tall.”

“How was your golf game, dear?” asked Jack’s wife Tracy.
“Well, I was hitting pretty well, but my eyesight’s gotten so bad I couldn’t see where the ball went.”
“But you’re seventy-five years old, Jack!” admonished his wife, “Why don’t you take my brother Scott along?”
“But he’s eighty-five and doesn’t even play golf anymore,” protested Jack.
“But he’s got perfect eyesight. He could watch your ball,” Tracy pointed out.
The next day Jack teed off with Scott looking on. Jack swung, and the ball disappeared down the middle of the fairway. “Do you see it?” asked Jack.
“Yup,” Scott answered.
“Well, where is it?” yelled Jack, peering off into the distance.
“I forgot.”

MEETING DINNER JULY 16th. 2012

Gary Roberts

Monday the 16th July saw our first guest speaker for 2012-2013.  Past Assistant Governor Gary Roberts (Murrumbidgeee Rotary Club) spoke to us on membership.  Gary brought with him Mitchell Kilham also a member of the RC of Murrumbidgee.   Gary outlined some ideas for our members to look at implementing to attract new members and to retain our current members.  We all had an excellent discussion with Gary and Mitchell.  Many ideas were  canvassed and it was decided to dedicate next week’s meeting to a think tank on how we will implement our ideas.  This in the form of a shortened Club Visioning meeting.

Mitchell spoke about how at the age of 22 he became a Rotarian and after going to RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) Mitchell loved the concept of helping others in need in countries such as Vanuatu, Fiji and Samoa with the RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service).  So Mitchell joined Rotary and will be more than happy to visit our club again to help us with explaining to women and men in his age group the benefits of joining Rotary.  One thing Mitchell did emphasise is that his generation are very keen to do good in the world around them, travel and have fun at the same time.

Grahame Miles won the raffle and Dick Jennings conducted a very spirited and professional auction of two dinners at the club, funds raised go to the cost of our weekly dinner shortfall. We need more members!

Garth Perkin and Dick Jennings reminded members of our two very interesting guest speakers on the 30th July and 6th August.  President Paul has said that hese meetings will be open to the public in our area and that we should all make a big effort to ask as many people along who may enjoy the nights.

Harnessing the sun’s power to cook

Rotarian Allart Ligtenberg spends three months abroad every year, telling anyone who will listen about solar cooking.

Solar cookers use reflective materials such as glass, mirrors, or aluminum foil to concentrate sunlight and convert it into heat for cooking.

Ligtenberg, a member of the Rotary Club of Los Altos, California, USA, was sold on the virtues of the devices more than three decades ago after his company, Hewlett-Packard, sent him to India in 1979. An avid hiker, he spent time trekking through the mountains of Nepal and was spellbound by the country’s beauty, but also troubled by its poverty.

Back home, he saw a newspaper ad for solar cooker blueprints. He sent the company a US$10 check and built the cooker, which he still uses in the yard of his California home.

Ligtenberg realized that if the people of Nepal could harness the sun’s power for cooking and water purification, they might be able to alleviate some of their health, environmental, and energy problems. Women wouldn’t have to walk far from home, spending valuable time and risking attack, to find wood for fuel. Deforestation would decrease. Vegetables and fruits could be dried, reducing spoilage. Water could be pasteurized, killing bacteria.

During the nine months he spends back home, Ligtenberg works to secure funding for projects, including Rotary Foundation Matching Grants, and to develop other efforts, such as starting carpentry and metalworking classes in Nepal, distributing devices that can purify water without boiling, and getting solar cookers into developing nations like Afghanistan, Indonesia, Peru, Bolivia, Mexico, Mongolia, and Haiti.

“This simple technology solves problems,” he says, “one village at a time.”

Rotary 2012-2013 Theme

How many languages can you recognise?

R.I. President Sakuji Tanaka explains:  “The design for my theme includes cherry blossoms, which represent the Japanese aesthetic that nothing is perfect or permanent. The bird is an origami crane, a symbol of peace and hope. The blue background was chosen because it is associated with peacefulness, serenity, and nature.”

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

The Lonely Frog

A lonely frog, desparate for any form of company telephoned the Psychic Hotline to find out what his future has in store.

His Personal Psychic Advisor advises him, “You are going to meet a beautiful young girl who will want to know everything about you.”

The frog is thrilled and says, “This is great! Where will I meet her, at work, at a party?”

“No” says the psychic, “in a Biology class.”

The lawyer

A very successful lawyer parked his brand-new Lexus in front of his office, ready to show it off to his colleagues. As he got out, a truck passed too close and completely tore off the door on the driver’s side. The lawyer immediately grabbed his cell phone, dialed 911, and within minutes a policeman pulled up.

Before the officer had a chance to ask any questions, the lawyer started screaming hysterically. His Lexus, which he had just picked up the day before, was now completely ruined and would never be the same, no matter what the body shop did to it.

When the lawyer finally wound down from his ranting and raving, the officer shook his head in disgust and disbelief. “I can’t believe how materialistic you lawyers are,” he said. “You are so focused on your possessions that you don’t notice anything else.”

“How can you say such a thing?” asked the lawyer.

The cop replied, “Don’t you know that your left arm is missing from the elbow down? It must have been torn off when the truck hit you.”

“My God!” screamed the lawyer. “My Rolex! My Rolex!”.

Forming a new Rotary Fellowship takes a lot of work, but as Rotarians who have established a group will attest, the effort is worthwhile. Before submitting a proposal, plan to develop a strong network of prospective members in at least three countries. You can start by posting your idea on the list of  Suggested Rotary Fellowships.
