Coolamon Rotary Bulletin #1819-31

MEETING OF MARCH 11th

President Daryl welcomed 19 members and guests Helen L, Mick O, Albert S and Russell B for a evening of collegiality and a delightful meal.

President Daryl then thanked and congratulated Alex, Graeme, Wayne and Ian for a successful ride from Coolamon to Junee for  successful leg of the relay; the baton was passed onto Junee riders to continue the efforts to promote polio awareness and raise funds to eradicate it. Congratulations and thank yous also went to John G and Henk who took the iron lung to the Coolamon Central School on Friday morning. The students found this idea of having to live in an iron lung and having the machine breathe for you to be a confronting and interesting concept. The ability to actually see the iron lung made it all the more real for the students.

Members were reminded that they should register for the district conference; the speakers are rumoured to be some of the best ever presenting at a conference. You don’t want to miss it!

Best of luck and good health also went to Grahame who is getting his knee replaced this week.

Don’t forget the street raffle this Saturday outside the newsagent if you’re rostered on.  Also, don’t forget that Bingo is this Thursday for those on the team this month. See the diary listing below if you’re not sure if you’re on either (or both) rosters.

Congratulations also went to the bowling team who had a successful night last Friday and won the business house bowls.

Big thank you to Henk who will be driving the students of Coolamon Central School to the Rotary Youth Driver awareness day. This is an invaluable opportunity for students to learn about handling a vehicle and driver safety and it helps to ensure that our youth drivers make it home safely.

Janice Menzies, organiser of Doin’ it for Drought-Affected Kids, sent a video compilation of the donation day at Broken Hill for the School of the Air children. It was great to see all the children happy and smiling on receiving their donations and congratulations go to Janice and her team for their massive effort.

Guest Speaker: Albert Suidgeest

Albert gave a presentation of his family and life history, a fascinating story of his Dutch immigrant parents who came to Australia before he was born. Albert is one of 11 siblings (seven girls and four boys!). His father was a baker who worked in small local bakeries across the region until supermarket chains and box freezers squeezed out the market for local bakers. Albert recalled that things were tight in the family but, because this was the way things were, he never questioned or worried and instead focusued on the close knit ties of his family. The close connection Albert has with his siblings was apparent from the many walking tours that he has done all over the world with his family and the family biennal gathering that typically has over 100 family members gathered in the new year.

Albert told us that he was the first in his family to go to university, having gotten a scholarship to go to university in Sydney where he completed a degree in economics and a diploma of education. He also told us of his initial arrival in Sydney where he turned up with no accommodation organised and how he managed to make it through those first months in the big city with the football club being a major support base for him.

On completing his degree Albert was appointed at Randwick boys High school, but the big city eventually got to Albert and he and his wife came to Coolamon in 1981 where he was appointed to teach at the central school and they raised five children.

Bondy thanked Albert for a most entertaining and interesting talk, presenting him with a kangaroo hide coin pouch as a token of thanks.  Because of the length of Albert’s talk, the fine session and raffle were deferred for another day.

We have one or two new members wanting to join our great club; we look forward to inducting them soon.

Our next street raffle will be on Saturday 16th March outside the Coolamon newsagency.

Bingo roster:  Grahame will be updating the Bingo roster in next week or so;  if you know you can’t do it any particular month in the next year, please let him know, to avoid having to find replacements at the last minute. Dick tells us he is not available July /August as he’ll be off overseas.

The club has been asked to fund $390 to hire a bus from Allen’s to transport students to Wagga, which was passed by the Board.

The End Polio Now bike relay is arriving in Coolamon on Thursday March 7; John will be bringing a vintage iron lung to Coolamon on Thursday night.

On Wednesday, March 6th the Wagga Wagga clubs will ride down Baylis Street to the WW City Council Chambers where they will be greeted by the Mayor at 10.00am.  The Mayor will then hand the baton on to the WW Cyclists who will take the baton to Coolamon on Thursday morning March 7th.

The iron lung will be in Coolamon on Friday morning, March 8th in a place to be nominated.  The iron lung will remain in the trailer as it’s very heavy.

The Coolamon cyclists depart for Junee at a time of their choice; Mayor John Seymour may want to send them off.

Coolamon Rotary Bulletin #1819-28

Meeting of 18 February

President Daryl welcomed 22 members, together with  guests Leo & Marianne DeKroo, Mel & Eleanor Meyer, Mick & Gail O’Brien, Albert Suidgeest, Maureen H, Sharon M, Marilyn J, Anne B, Heather McK, Lexi F, Jan N, Barry L, Helen L, Sally F, Lorraine H, Russ Barrow, and Minnie Lewis.

Several diary items of note:

  • Neil announced that 40 people have signed up to come to the Peace Ceremony in Lions Park at 4.15 next Saturday, 23rd Feb.  Please let Neil know if you are planning to attend.
  • Catering on Tuesday morning, 26th Feb, at 8 am for Delta Ag breakfast; need about 5 members. Please let Dick know if you can help out.
  • PETS training will be held in Young on 2 & 3 March. Contrary to what was said at the meeting, PETS training is just for incoming presidents, not incoming board members.
  • Clean-up Australia Day on Sunday March 3, 9 am at Coolamon PO.
  • International Womens’ Day on Friday March 8 will be celebrated with a breakfast at the Old Convent, from 7 to 8.30am.  Guest Speaker is Heather Ward on the theme ‘Balance for Better’.

Daryl announced that Janice Menzies & her team (Doin’ it for Drought-Affected Kids) distributed 270 school packages in Broken Hill.

Bingo Roster:  Grahame will be updating the Bingo roster in next week or so.  If you know you won’t be able to work at bingo for any particular month in the next year, please let Grahame know to avoid having to find replacements at the last minute.

Guest Speaker Leo DeKroo gave us the second instalment of the most interesting story of his life in the music & radio industry. He started with a brief rehash of the story he gave us last time, of his life in the entertainment industry in the 1960’s, working with the likes of Brian Henderson, Col Joye, Judy Stone, Bee Gees, etc

He then spoke of another part of his life when he moved to Eumungerie, near Dubbo, in the early 1970’s.  This is where Leo met Marianne; they married in 1978.

Leo recounted some most interesting stories of experiences he had when he was working as a radio announcer on local radio station 2DU.  One story involved a phone call in the early hours from a guy who claimed he had just murdered someone & all the ramifications of that event;  far too much to recount here.

Henk thanked Leo for his talk and presented him with one of our kangaroo hide coin pouches.

The meeting concluded with a brief fine session, during which Sargent-At-Arms Ted managed to fine most of the guests in attendance–a bit harsh, don’t you think, Ted?  The raffle was won by Sally.

She then presented President Daryl with a cheque for $27K for the construction of a large shed to store our food van (see photos below).

John G gave a talk on the Polio bike relay in March and how our club need to become involved in The Coolamon to Junee leg and maybe beyond (to assist Junee).  For every dollar we raise in this venture, we get $2 from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The movie ‘Swimming with Men’ is on Friday March 1 to raise funds for End Polio Now; let Daryl or Neil know if you plan to attend. The cost is $20 per ticket. Every dollar raised from the proceeds of this movie will also be doubled by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

A reminder that our guest speaker on February 18 is Leo DeKroo. As Leo is such an entertaining presenter, it was suggested this would be a great opportunity to invite guests along, especially potential new members.  So, if you have any one in mind, please make a point of inviting them along (and let John N know if they’re coming!).

There were three raffle prizes this week; the winners were Myffy, Don and Paul.

February is World Understanding Month

Coolamon Rotary Bulletin #1819-25

Meeting of 21 January (first meeting of 2019)

President Daryl welcomed 19 members & guests to our first meeting for 2019.  Guests included Peta, Tim, Charlie & Jackson Wykes (our guest speaker), Heather McK, Jan N, Maree J, Lorraine H, Jan B, Claire M, Helen L, Anne B, Susan G & her guests from Germany, Oemer, Lotta & Marcel.  Apologies from Ian J, Henk H, John B, Myffy C, Bern M & Garth P.

President Daryl thanked all those who helped out on NYE with setting up the food van, cooking & cleanup,  plus selling raffle tickets, which brought in a great figure of $1100.

Daryl also mentioned there would be no meeting next Monday due to public holiday & asked if anyone would be interested in attending Wagga Rotary Club meeting on Thursday night, Jan 31 in lieu of our meeting.

Neil M spoke on the upcoming Peace Ceremony to be held on Saturday, February 23, at 4 to 4.30 followed by fellowship and dinner.  Please keep it in mind to support;  much planning has to be undertaken.

Our exchange student Jackson Wykes has returned from his year in Finland and gave a verbal & slide show on his experiences, mainly outside of school. He was hosted by three different families, most of whom had children of similar ages to him.  Jackson spent much of his time out of school hunting, mainly deer, birds & rabbits, which he got huge satisfaction from.  When the snow was around he also spent lots of time on the snow skiing, which he also loved, and playing ice hockey.  Jackson concluded by thanking our Rotary Club for sponsoring him for the experience of a lifetime.  Daryl thanked Jackson for his presentation and for representing our club (and Australia!) well during his stay overseas.  It was clear to those who saw Jackson speak before and after his stay in Finland that Jackson has matured significantly over the year and become a more confident speaker (with a more refined accent!).

The raffle was won by Howard’s partner, Anne.

January is Vocational Service Month

Coolamon Rotary Bulletin #1819-24 – Special Holiday Edition

1 January, 2019

We hope you all had a wonderful silly season and were able to spend some quality time with near and dear ones.  We have some pics to share of our Christmas party and New Year’s Eve festival, along with a letter from Jackson Wykes, our outbound Rotary Exchange student who will be returning from Finland later this month.  Best wishes for a healthful and productive new year!

Bring on winter in Finland

Jackson Wykes, exchange student sponsored by the Rotary Club of Coolamon currently living in Finland

Hello again everyone …….

I still cannot believe how fast the year is flying by. Who would think we only have three months to go! Writing this makes me think how I need to make the most of every moment that I have left of this exchange.

Not a great deal has happened the past three months. Summer holidays had to come to an end and I have returned to school. It was a bit strange to have to get into a routine again, like getting out of bed early, but it didn’t take me long to adjust. School has changed a lot since returning from the break. I am now in senior school and everyone is very studious and striving to do their best. I attend all my classes but probably distract others in the class as I know school is not counting towards anything for me. Recently my school had exams. I had to do the maths exam. I wouldn’t say I did great as it was all written in Finnish and my ability to read Finnish is not great and possibly I haven’t listened all that well in class!

I’m doing all the basic subjects at school. I do one Finnish class a week which is helping me with learning the language. This has been really hard as everyone just speaks English to me. I love spending time with my friends at school and in my free time.

One big change recently was when I moved to my last host family, the Ilvankas. They are a really nice family and have made me feel like part of their family. On my first night at their house we put an Australian flag up on the wall in the living room. My bedroom is so cool.

My host dad is Jari and my host mum is Terhi. I now have one older host brother, Eero and younger host brother, Arvo. The Ilvankas have decided to only speak Finnish to me, so hopefully I learn a bit before I come home. I am understanding most things they say, but speaking it is a different story.

Eero goes to university, so I don’t see him too much. I’m very close with my younger host brother Arvo. I play in his ice hockey team and I go hunting with him almost every day. The Ilvankas go hunting all the time. Almost every weekend I hunt with my host father around where I live. It is a lot of fun and something that I am enjoying a lot.

I have been playing ice hockey a few times a week in Arvo’s team. I’m not very good, but I’m getting better. I really like ice hockey.

I have had one district camp in the last 3 months. At this camp we met in Tampere and I got to meet all the new exchange students in my district. Time has gone so fast that I can’t believe that was me 9 months ago! I have also had the opportunity to meet up with the rest of the new exchange students in Helsinki and Tampere.

I have also had a trip to the coast, a place called Pori. The beach is not the same as in Australia. It was not the best day, weather wise, but it was still very nice and a lot of fun.

I am really looking forward to the cold weather again. I loved winter in Urjala and I’m looking forward to the snow. I need to make the most of my time where there is snow in my backyard as it won’t be the same when I get back home.

Thanks for reading my report. With only 1 month left there is still so much to see and do.

Jackson Wykes

Coolamon Rotary Bulletin #1819-23

Meeting of 10th December (last regular meeting of 2018)

President Daryl welcomed 24 members (almost a record) & guests Anne B, Lana Collins (trainee doctor working with Dr Amir for next 2 weeks), Susan G, Helen L & Barry L.

Daryl thanked those who helped with the catering at opening of the ambulance station.

Vale Roger Quine:  Roger passed away last Sunday and was a longstanding member of Junee Rotary club and a strong supporter of our club for many, many years. The funeral will be next Monday (17th Dec) at the Wagga Crematorium, commencing at 10:30 am.

Coolamon Rotary Christmas party this Saturday at the residence of Daryl & Jann Breust at 7 pm. The main course including salads will be provided by your hosts. Each couple are asked to bring a dessert or nibbles. The cost will be $15 per couple to cover cost of meats and salads, etc.

Bingo this Thursday; rostered on are Grahame, Ian J, Myffy & Garth. Please be there by 6:45 to help set up.

A roster sheet for NYE was passed around for volunteers to help out with catering, etc, on NYE. A copy will be distributed to members this week and again after Christmas as a reminder.

Paul gave a presentation on his recent trip to the US, where he was greeted with heavy snow storms, which is very unseasonal for November. He visited his daughter and her partner and other family members and had a weekend out deer hunting but didn’t see one; maybe they were pre-warned.

Ted H once again led a lively fine session. The evening concluded with a meat and port wine raffle, the first prize going to Lyn and second to Don.

Remaining presentation nights at local schools:

Coolamon Central: Thursday Dec 13,  – Daryl B

St.Michael’s (Coolamon):  Thursday Dec 13 – Wayne & Helen

Ardlethan: Tuesday Dec 18,  – Garth

Beckom: Friday Dec 14, – Howard & Ann

Official Opening of Coolamon Ambulance Station

Coolamon Rotary was on hand to cater to the hunger of the officials and residents who came out for the official opening of the recently constructed ambulance station in Coolamon.  Rotarian Henk Hulsman deserves special mention for his role in helping to bring the much-needed station to Coolamon.  The club provided the eats in addition to serving it up for the crowd.

Meeting of 3rd December, 2018

President Daryl welcomed 18 members & guests Anne B, Lana Collins (trainee doctor working with Dr Amir for next 2 weeks), Helen L, Barry L & Russell B. Apologies from Myffy, Bern, Sarah, Don, Ian, and Anne.

The Coolamon ambulance station opening will take place on Friday, 7 December. Set up will be at 8.30; official opening is at 9:30 and finish about 11 am.  The following member are rostered on from 8:30:  Ted, John B, Dave, Dick, Lyn  & John G.

Late meeting apologies
Daryl has asked that all members who cannot attend a meeting because of last-minute/unforeseen circumstances to let John Nulty know by midday on the day of the meeting at the latest.  If this is not possible, it is imperative to contact Diane & Gilbert on 6927 3552. The restaurant is charging the club for all members listed to attend, even if they don’t turn up.  It is patently unfair to expect the club to pay for these meals when it is in fact the responsibility of the individual member.

Please let John Nulty know numbers ASAP for Christmas Party at Daryl & Jann’s, so we know how much meat & salads have to be purchased.

Invitations to school presentation nights have been received; the following members and partners are representing our club. Contact the listed members if you wish to attend as well.
