The tremendous burden on the families of those infected by HIV/AIDS – particularly for older people caring for their terminally ill children and raising their grandchildren, and for children who are orphaned – is incalculable.
This is a story of people coming together to help fight this global killer along with other preventable diseases.
Inspired by Marion Bunch, an American woman who lost her son to AIDS, Rotary Family Health Days will offer free health care services over three days in S. Africa, Ghana, Nigeria and Uganda in April 2014.
During five plenary sessions you’ll be inspired by Rotary International’s president and other leaders as they share stories about Rotarians worldwide who exemplify Service Above Self. Rotary Foundation leaders will present the latest news about polio eradication and updates on Foundation grants. Simultaneous interpretation will be offered in Mandarin Chinese, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish, and possibly other languages, depending on registrants’ needs. The schedule below represents the latest information available, and is subject to change.

ROTARY INFORMATION
Vocational training team uses collaborative approach for medical training
By Ellina Kushnir, Rotary Programs staff
f
A group of six obstetricians from England traveled to Sikkim, India, in April as part of the Collaborative Action in Lowering Maternity Encountered Deaths vocational training team. Known as CALMED, the joint initiative between Districts 1120 (England) and 3240 (parts of northeast India) brought together professionals and community members to train medical staff in emergency care for pregnant women and newborns. The team developed curricula and resources and used simulators to train local medical professionals involved with childbirth. Afterward, the newly trained medical staff trained rural medical workers — all part of the effort to reduce the risk of complications and death during pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period. Watch a video of the exchange.
ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
ADVICE FROM A RETIRED HUSBAND
It is important for men to remember that as women grow older, it becomes harder for them to maintain the same quality of housekeeping as when they were younger. When you notice this, try not to yell at them. Some are oversensitive, and there’s nothing worse than an oversensitive woman.
My name is Wayne. Let me relate how I handled the situation with my wife.
When I retired a few years ago, it became necessary for Denise to get a full-time job, along with her part-time job, both for extra income and for the health benefits that we needed.
Shortly after she started working, I noticed she was beginning to show her age. I usually get home from the golf club about the same time she gets home from work.
Although she knows how hungry I am, she almost always says she has to rest for half an hour or so before she starts dinner. I don’t yell at her. Instead, I tell her to take her time, and just wake me when she gets dinner on the table.
I generally have lunch in the Men’s Grill at the club, so eating out is not reasonable. I’m ready for some home-cooked grub when I hit that door.
She used to do the dishes as soon as we finished eating, but now it’s not unusual for them to sit on the table for several hours after dinner. I do what I can by diplomatically reminding her several times each evening that they won’t clean themselves. I know she really appreciates this, as it does seem to motivate her to get them done before she goes to bed bed.
Another symptom of aging is complaining, I think. For example, she will say that it is difficult for her to find time to pay the monthly bills during her lunch hour. But boys, we take ’em for better or worse, so I just smile and offer encouragement. I tell her to stretch it out over two, or even three days. That way, she won’t have to rush so much. I also remind her that missing lunch completely now and then wouldn’t hurt her any (if you know what I mean). I like to think tact is one of my strong points.
When doing simple jobs, she seems to think she needs more rest periods. She had to take a break when she was only half-finished mowing the yard. I try not to make a scene. I’m a fair man. I tell her to fix herself a nice big cold glass of freshly-squeezed lemonade, and just sit for a while. And as long as she is making one for herself, she may as well make one for me too.
I know that I probably look like a saint in the way I support my wife. I’m not saying that showing this much consideration is easy. Many men will find it difficult. Some will find it impossible! Nobody knows better than I do how frustrating women get as they get older. However, guys, even if you just use a little more tact and less criticism of your aging wife because of this article, I will consider that writing it was well worthwhile. After all, we are put on this earth to help each other.
ED. NOTE: Wayne died suddenly on January 15th of a perforated rectum. The police report says he was found with a Calloway extra-long 50-inch Big Bertha Driver II golf club jammed up his rear end, with barely five inches of grip showing, and a sledge hammer lying nearby. His wife was arrested and charged with murder. The all-woman jury took only 10 minutes to find her not guilty, accepting her defence that Wayne, somehow without looking, accidentally sat down on his golf club.

Tribute To Lenana, The Gentle One
Today we are remembering a very special elephant whom we knew as a friend. He was mercilessly murdered on this very day a year ago. For us it feels like only yesterday. His name was LENANA.
We know we were not the only ones who loved Lenana and so we would like to share this day with you.
We wish to remember Lenana as he was in life, strong, patient, majestic in all of his beautiful elephant-ness and ever gentle.
His memory lives on in our hearts and through our work to save his kind. We wish you were alive today. Free and wild among your fellow elephants.
We are thinking of you today, as we are everyday. Be at peace dear Lenana, now and forever.

This week we look at a wonderful education programme from Western Australia.
WA Chief Scientist Lyn Beazley has a vision that every primary school in WA has a set of Magnifying Microscopes.
The Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay, together with the Science Teachers’ Association of Western Australia (STAWA) and the Water Corporation, is making that dream a reality.
The Magnifying Microscope is a small hand-held unit that allows a child to easily move it around to view items indoors or out. An Activity Booklet has been produced by the Water Corporation, in conjunction with STAWA, so that teachers are able to integrate the use of the Magnifying Microscopes with their existing curriculum.
A set of microscopes were presented to Balga Primary School Friday morning 14th March. At least 50% of student are indigenous / from other cultures, with Asian and African the dominant cultures represented. Principal Laura O’Hara is a valued member of the RCFB, always striving to do the best she can in the low socio economic schools she has worked in.

An Information Technology workshop followed dinner and this was conducted by Paul Weston and John Glassford. Several of the members brought their devices along for the workshop. We have a lot of work to do here but it was a good start with some members very proficient and others not into the Internet or computers. HOWEVER all present do use email so that is a good start.
John feels that the way of the future will lie in technology such as Facebook and whatever takes the place of Facebook into the future.
It was also PE Garth Perkin’s birthday.

Rotaractors and #Rotary go hand in hand. Read how 7,084 people did just that. #RotaractStorm
By Ramkumar Raju A., Rotaract Club of Madras Central, Tamil Nadu, India
Last April, I was asked by RI Director P.T. Prabhakar to form a team and help gather 10,000 Rotaractors for a Presidential New Generations Conference to be held in Chennai, India, for then President-elect Ron Burton. We have more than 25,000 Rotaract members in our district but I was overwhelmed by the request.
I said I didn’t think it would be possible without the support of Rotarians in our district.
The largest human image of a hand, consisting of 7,084 people.
I was going crazy, and wondered how we could fund such a large effort. But our district governor told me to leave that to the Rotarians, and give it our best effort.
A team of Rotarians and Rotaractors was formed and we selected the theme, “We Are the Change,” which brought a big smile to my face. Now I was ready for the challenge, and ready to be “the Change.”
A man gets into a big argument with his wife so he decides to head up to the local pub and drink a few pints while she cools off. He runs into a few friends and they start celebrating and talking about the good ole’ days. Several hours quickly pass and he decides its getting late and he better start heading home.
He goes to get off the bar stool to leave and falls flat on his face. He makes several attempts to get up but cant seem to get on his feet. He thinks to himself that he must’ve really over done it this time to be so drunk he cant even stand. He looks around and luckily no one has noticed his drunken display so he crawls out of the bar where he still cant seem to pull himself together. He figures the hell with it, its only a few blocks to his house so he just crawls home and gently slides into bed as not to disturb his sleeping wife.
The next morning he awakes with this feeling of piercing eyes upon him when he notices his wife standing at the foot of the bed with her arms crossed and obviously upset. He mutters out a “Good morning, honey” to which she angrily replies “You were out at the pub all night getting drunk, weren’t you?”
He quickly rolls over and begins to plead with her, “Of course not honey, I wouldn’t do that. I was here in bed with you most of night. Why in the world would you say that?”
She rolls her eyes and replies, “Because the pub called, you forgot your wheelchair…Again!”
The Triker and the Bridge
Last Autumn a group of trikers were riding across the Harbour Bridge, when they saw a girl about to jump off a bridge…So they stopped. George, their leader, a big burly man of 53, gets off his TRIKE, walks through a group of gawkers, past the Highway Patrolman who was trying to talk her down off the railing, and says, “G ‘ day gorgeous what you doing’ up there on that railing?”
She says tearfully, “I’m going to commit suicide!!”
While he didn’t want to appear ‘sensitive’, George also didn’t want to miss this ‘be-a-legend’ opportunity either so he asked…
“Well, before you jump, Honey-Babe… Why don’t you give your old mate George here your best last kiss?”
So, with no hesitation at all, she leaned back over the railing and did just that… And it was a long, deep, lingering kiss followed immediately by another even better one.
After they breathlessly finished, George gets a big thumbs-up approval from his triker-buddies, the onlookers, and even the cops, and then says, “Wow! That was the best kiss I have ever had, Honey! That’s a real talent you’re wasting, Sugar Shorts. You could be famous if you rode with me. Why the hell are you committing suicide?”
“My parents don’t like me dressing up like a girl.”
It’s still unclear whether the person jumped or was pushed!

WWW. 25 YEARS OLD!
Sir Tim Berners-Lee in 2012
A 1989 document that was both practical and prescient.
On March 12, 1989, British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee distributed a document to his colleagues at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, in Geneva. His unprepossessing title, “Information Management: A Proposal,” indicates that he wasn’t trying to change the world. He just knew that CERN had vast quantities of valuable information stored all over the place, and that it would be easier to find if it were all linked together in a way that made it accessible from any computer. So — returning to concepts he had started exploring in 1980 during an earlier tour of duty at CERN — he recommended creating a networked hypertext system to manage all that knowledge.
The idea floated out there for a while before it became reality, at CERN or anywhere else, but what Berners-Lee was proposing came to be known as the World Wide Web. That makes today, March 12, 2014, as good a day as any to celebrate the web’s 25th birthday.

Littered with old National Geographic magazines, a model volcano, and a solar cooker, Bartholomew Meena’s crammed science room in Machame, Tanzania, captured Amy Kaspar’s heart at first glance.
“He created all the science projects we had from our childhood in one room,” recalls Kaspar, a former Rotary Scholar who’s now a member of the Rotary Club of Capital Square in Ohio. Within those projects, she saw Menna’s passion for his environment and a wealth of unexplored opportunities, particularly the chance to collaborate and study the environmental impact of Mount Kilimanjaro’s melting glaciers.
“I had attended several lectures recently at the center,” Kaspar says. “The thought hit me, shouldn’t the people who live around the mountain know about what is happening and prepare for the changes?”

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT RON BURTON:
This week we learn about our RI President Elect Gary Huang.
RI President-elect Gary C.K. Huang and his spouse, Corinna, announced the 2014-15 RI theme, Light Up Rotary, during the opening plenary session at the International Assembly, 13 January 2014, San Diego, California, USA.
Gary C.K. Huang, a member of the Rotary Club of Taipei, Taiwan, will become Rotary International’s 2014-15 president on 1 July.
Huang is an adviser for Wah Lee Industrial Corp. and Bank of Panhsin. He is also a director of Federal Corporation and Sunty Property Development.
A Rotarian since 1976, Huang has served RI as vice president, director, Rotary Foundation trustee, district governor, International Assembly training leader, regional session leader, task force member and coordinator, and committee member and chair.
He is a recipient of the RI Service Above Self Award and a Presidential Citation, and The Rotary Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service and Distinguished Service Award.
A biker was riding along a California beach when suddenly the sky clouded above his head and, in a booming voice, the Lord said, “Because you have TRIED to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish.”
The biker pulled over and said, “Build a bridge to Hawaii so I can ride over anytime I want.”
The Lord said, “Your request is materialistic. Think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking. The supports required to reach the bottom of the Pacific! The concrete and steel it would take! It will nearly exhaust several natural resources. I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things.
Take a little more time and think of something that would honor and glorify me.”
The biker thought about it for a long time. Finally he said, “Lord, I wish that I could understand my wife. I want to know how she feels inside, what she’s thinking when she gives me the silent treatment, why she cries, what she means when she says nothing’s wrong, and how I can make the woman truly happy.”
The Lord replied, “You want two lanes or four on that bridge?
Dead Duck
A woman brought a very limp duck into a veterinary surgeon. As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird’s chest.
After a moment or two, the vet shook his head sadly and said; “I’m sorry, your duck (Cuddles) has passed away.”
The distressed woman wailed; “Are you sure?”
“Yes, I am sure. The duck is dead.” replied the vet.
“How can you be so sure?” she protested. “I mean you haven’t done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something.”
The vet rolled his eyes, turned around, and left the room.
He returned a few minutes later with a black Labrador Retriever. As the duck’s owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table, and sniffed the duck from top to bottom. He then looked up at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head.
The vet patted the dog on the head and took it out of the room.
A few minutes later he returned with a cat. The cat jumped on the table and also delicately sniffed the bird from head to foot. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly, and strolled out of the room.
The vet looked at the woman and said; “I’m sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100% certifiably, a dead duck.”
The vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys and produced a bill, which he handed to the woman. The duck’s owner, still in shock, took the bill. “$150!” she cried; “$150 just to tell me my duck is dead!?”
The vet shrugged; “I’m sorry. If you had just taken my word for it, the bill would have been $20, but… with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan, it’s now $150.”

Grammy award-winning singer Angélique Kidjo speaks to Rotary staff at the RI Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, on 10 February.

In her new album, “Eve,” Grammy award winner Angélique Kidjo honors the women in Africa, and pays tribute to Rotary’s work to end polio worldwide.
The singer and activist from Benin chose to include Rotary in the soon-to-be-released video of the album’s signature song, “Eva.” Rotary’s presence in the video is no coincidence. The relationship between the singer dates back to 2011, when she joined about two dozen celebrities, including Jackie Chan, Jack Nicklaus, and Jane Goodall, in Rotary’s “This Close” polio awareness campaign.
“I am the cherry on top of the cake,” says Kidjo in an exclusive interview with Rotary News. “The important work is done by the people in the field.” With the voices of Kidjo and collaborator Nigerian signer Asa as a backdrop, the video shadows a young girl as she wanders about in an old novelty shop. The curious girl turns on an old TV and sees the singers on-screen, followed by footage of a Rotary Family Health Day project in South Africa.

# 5 BASIC EDUCATION AND LITERACY
THE FOUNDATION ENABLES ROTARIANS TO ENSURE THAT ALL PEOPLE HAVE SUSTAINABLE ACCESS TO BASIC EDUCATION AND LITERACY BY:
Involving the community to support programs that strengthen the capacity of communities to provide basic education and literacy to all.
Increasing adult literacy in communities.
Working to reduce gender disparity in education.
Supporting studies for career-minded professionals related to basic education and literacy.
One great example of what our club and RFFA Australia are doing and has done, in this area of basic education and literacy is to sponsor Tracy Monica Ochieng. We first met Tracy in the “suburb” slum of Mathare in November 2011. Tracy now enters 3rd term at the Bishop Okoth’s Secondary School for Girls in Kisumu. Tracy is doing very very well.
Happy Birthday Coolamon Rotary 43 years old today!
Tonight we had as our guest speaker Bill Fraser from the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Bill came down from Canberra to be our guest for the evening. We had 16 members attend with three partners Marilyn Jennings, Helen Lewis and Susan Glassford.
Bill gave us a great insight into the RFDS and started with the statistics that most of us would be unaware of:
The RFDS attends to around 295,000 patients on an annual basis.
They carry out 15,000 Medical Clinics
They have 63 fixed wing aircraft
AND fly 26 million kilometres in a year.
The De Havilland DH 50 similar to the first RFDS Aircraft used in 1928 by Rev John Flynn
Last year the RFDS had 385 air landings in Wagga Wagga and are very active in the Riverina.
Bill gave us a history that is not often known on the early origins of the RFDS and it goes back to 1839 long before the airplane was invented and started with Aboriginal health care in remote areas of Australia and grew into what we know today as the RFDS. To read more go to the RFDS web site below:
Rtn. Don Dyce presented Bill with a cheque from our club and a kangaroo pouch.
Don Dyce thanks Bill Fraser for his talk on the RFDS.
President Dick Jennings thanked all for attending and reminded all members that we have a board meeting next week and everyone is welcome to attend. Directors please send your reports to Paul Weston asap.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
A Happy Sikh in London…
A British man walks into a bar in Central London and before could
order his drink, he notices a Sikh wearing a turban. Having a personal
grudge against Sikhs, the Britisher says loudly to the bartender to
the advantage of everyone seated in the bar, “Drinks for everyone in
here, except for the Sikh over there.”
The first round of drinks were served, and the Sikh gives him a
smile, gestures to him saying, “Thank you!” in a loud voice.
The Britisher is upset and again orders loudly to the bartender to
serve another round of drinks to everyone except the Sardar.
The Sardar seems to be unruffled and he continues to smile, and yells
back, “Thank you!”*
The British man is mad by now and asks the bartender,
“Whats wrong with this Sardar? I’ve insulted him by ordering drinks
for everyone but him, and yet he smiles back and keeps thanking me.
Has he lost his mind?”*
“No, Sir,” replies the bartender. “He is the owner of this place.”
THE SHOEBOX
A man and woman had been married for more than 60 years. They had shared everything. They had talked about everything. They had kept no secrets from each other except that the little old woman had a shoe box in the top of her closet that she had cautioned her husband never to open or ask her about.
For all of these years, he had never thought about the box, but one day the little old woman got very sick and the doctor said she would not recover.
In trying to sort out their affairs, the little old man took down the shoe box and took it to his wife’s bedside. She agreed that it was time that he should know what was in the box. When he opened it, he found two crocheted dolls and a stack of money totalling $95,000.
He asked her about the contents.
‘When we were to be married,’ she said, ‘ my grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was to never argue. She told me that if I ever got angry with you, I should just keep quiet and crochet a doll.’
The little old man was so moved; he had to fight back tears. Only two Precious dolls were in the box. She had only been angry with him two Times in all those years of living and loving. He almost burst with Happiness.
‘Honey,’ he said, ‘that explains the doll, but what about all of this money? Where did it come from?’
‘Oh,’ she said, ‘that’s the money I made from selling the dolls.

Polio vaccination teams attacked by Pakistani militants
Pakistani paramilitary soldiers take a last glimpse of their colleagues, who were killed in roadside bomb attacks during a funeral ceremony in the Lashora area of Pakistan Photo: AFP/GETTY
Militants have attacked a polio vaccination team in northwest Pakistan, detonating a roadside bomb before opening fire on their convoy.
The attackers killed 12 members of the security escort for the team during the hour-long assault, and when rescuers approached the scene the gunmen also attacked them, according to Khan Faraz, a local official.
Around a dozen wounded were taken to hospital, but others died on the road waiting for help to arrive, he said.
Another official said all the casualties were members of the “levies” or Khasadar, both locally-recruited, government-backed militias. They were providing security for the health workers.
Polio vaccination teams are frequently attacked, as are government security forces.

CAUSES WORTH SUPPORTING
DONATE BOOKS TO THE LABYRINTH FOR LITERACY PROJECT
Literacy projects have long been a cornerstone of Rotary service around the world and RI President Ron Burton and Jetta have requested Convention registrants to take literacy to a new level in Australia by donation of books at a special ‘Labyrinth for Literacy’ inside the Billabong House of Friendship.
Sydney 2014 Host Organising Committee has joined forces with Rotary’s Action Group for Literacy to organize the ‘Labyrinth for Literacy’, which will be located just inside the entry to the giant Dome – first hall in the giant Billabong House of Friendship complex.
Prospective book donors have two options – bring books from their home country or purchase books from the Scholastic Booth at the ‘Labyrinth for Literacy’ area. The Scholastic organisation is supporting the project with provision of books for sale and staff to assist with service.
A ‘reminder’ flyer will be presented to all Rotarians as they collect registration details in the Convention Registration area – Hall 5 in the Southee Complex.
To provide a little ‘light relief’ the books will be arranged in a labyrinth or maze in the booth area.
Rotarians from nearby Sydney clubs have volunteered to provide ‘labour’ to assist with the display and subsequent packing of books for dispatch to various literacy programs around Australia.
There are many outstanding literacy programs involving aboriginal children, underprivileged schools and hospitals throughout the states of Queensland and New South Wales.
The Sydney 2014 Host Organising Committee expect this project to be one of the stand out initiatives of the Convention.
Visit Goat Island, site of many ancient ceremonies and traditional home of Bennelong and Barrangaroo, whose name are linked to many famous Sydney landmarks.
You’ll hear authentic stories of Aboriginal Sydney, experience traditional Aboriginal welcoming ceremonies and performances, and enjoy a delicious 3 course meal and meet new and old friends in a unique and spectacular setting.
