MONDAY MEETING MAY 26th 2014

We were low on numbers tonight due to the flu and members being away.  However we had two guests Susan Glassford and Helen Lewis.  Garth Perkin brought along Anne Frizell as our guest speaker tonight.  Anne is studying at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga for her Bachelor of Education and wants to specialise in teaching agriculture.

Anne gave a very interesting talk which was well received by everyone.  In his vote of thanks Neil Munro said that Australia is in good stead with young inspiring and hard working women such as Anne.   Anne comes from the land from Armidale and has two sisters, loves farming and is passionate about teaching.  Anne was introduced to Rotary by her school bus driver in Armidale and we are convinced that Anne will make a very good Rotarian when she graduates.  Well done Anne.

President Dick Jennings reminded all members that next weekend we are required to man the gates for Brad’s Flight for Life at the Coolamon Showgrounds.  Volunteers are required so please get your names on the roster.  Ted Hutcheon reported on the Salvos fund raising in Coolamon which yielded $1166, we will be at the footy next weekend in Ganmain and Coolamon collecting at the gates.

Our club congratulates Tony Donohue in being promoted to the position of General  Manager at the Coolamon Shire council.

Rotary International President Ron Burton visited Interact students in New Mexico, USA, at the Rotary Club of Santa Fe’s 90th anniversary dinner. Prior to the dinner, the youth leaders interviewed President Burton for 30 minutes.

The Barber

A guy sticks his head in the barber shop and asks, “How long before I can et a haircut?” The barber looks around the shop and says, “About two hours.” The guy leaves.

A few days later, the same guy sticks his head in the door and asks, “How long before I get a haircut?” The barber looks around the shop full of customers and says, “About two hours.” The guy leaves.

A week later, the same guy sticks his head in the shop and asks, “How long before I can get a haircut?” The barber looks around the shop an says, “About an hour and half.” The guy leaves.

The barber looks over at a friend in the shop and says, “Hey Bill, follow that guy and see where he goes.” In a little while, Bill comes back into the shop laughing hysterically. The barber asks, “Bill, where did he go when he left here?” Bill looked up and said,

“To your house.”

May summit to help Rotarians leverage water, sanitation, and hygiene resources

The Water and Sanitation Rotarian Action Group is looking forward to our sixth World Water Summit, a one-day water, sanitation, and hygiene education (WASH) conference on May 30th in Sydney, the day before the International Convention begins. Participants will learn the latest from world experts, experienced Rotarians, and potential supporters about how to design, implement and monitor effective WASH programs.

Dear John,

I hope you are fine.  I am doing fine on my end. My aim for this letter is to thank you for the scholarship that you gave me.  I was extremely happy.  I am now able to continue with my studies.I know that education is the key to success.  I am going to work hard and make you proud of sponsoring me.  We have done an exam and the results will be coming along with this letter.

God bless you for everything.  I hope one day I will be able to meet you and thank you personally.  As you know I study at Bahati Girls one of the best schools in the country.  I am happy there because it is a conducive place for learning.  As I end the letter I would like to tell you I am opening on the seventh day of May and my school fees is eighteen thousand.

MONDAY MEETING MAY 19th 2014

We had a lively and informative meeting with 13 members present and one guest Susan Glassford.

The raffle prize was a bucket of three fish caught by our intrepid anglers recently.

 

President Dick reminded members that the Red Shield Appeal is on this upcoming weekend.  Ted Hutcheon spoke at length on the conduct of the fund raising for the Salvos and how best to obtain the best result from our efforts.

Grounds for Divorce

A judge was interviewing a woman regarding her pending divorce and asks, “What are the grounds for your divorce?”

She replied, “About four acres and a nice little home in the middle of the property.”

“I mean,” he continued, “What are your relations like?”

“I have an aunt and uncle living here in town, and so do my husband’s parents.”

He said, “Do you have a real grudge?”

“No,” she replied, “We have a two-car carport and have never really needed one.”

“Please,” he tried again, “is there any infidelity in your marriage?”

“Yes, both my son and daughter have stereo sets. We don’t necessarily like the music, but the answer to your question is ‘yes’.”

“Ma’am, does your husband ever beat you up?”

“Yes,” she responded, “most days he gets up earlier than I do.”

Finally, in frustration, the judge asked, “Lady, why do you want a divorce?”

“Oh, I don’t want a divorce,” she replied. “I never wanted a divorce. It’s husband. He says he can’t communicate with me.”

ROTARY PROJECT CREATES COOKBOOK FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED

A woman with a black apron is stirring tomatoes into a pan of vegetables in Bursa, Turkey. Visually impaired, she is being helped by an assistant, who is a spouse of a Turkish Rotary member.

Elsewhere in the kitchen, other cooks and Rotary spouses are preparing meatballs, slicing and peeling eggplants, and measuring out cookie dough. At a table in an adjacent dining area, a man is reading a recipe from a Braille cookbook.

The cookbook, “Good Smells From the Kitchen,” has enabled many members of the Library of Turkey for the Visually Disabled to enter the kitchen with new confidence.

FOOT NOTE

Another elephant tragedy in Kenya.   This is what we are fighting against with RAGES.

We are devastated to report that Mountain Bull has been found dead, having been speared on the slopes of Mount Kenya.

Mountain Bull was a magnificent elephant who achieved notoriety for his fence-breaking habit, but who helped make the Laikipia Elephant Corridor famous when he (eventually) learnt to use this path between his mountain hideaway and the ladies of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.

The Elephant Crisis Fund is moving fast to counter this appalling waste of beauty and life. Losing Mountain Bull spurs us to redouble our efforts.

KENYAN INTERNATIONAL NIGHT

We held a great International Night in Ganmain for Kenya and  WildLife Direct in Kenya as well as the Rotary Club of Kenton-on-Sea’s Save Our Rhino project.  Our guests came from far and wide and we would like to thank His Excellency Isaiya Kabira for being our guest speaker for the night.

We would also like to thank everyone who attended and made the night a huge success with over $4,000 being raised for the two projects.  The night would not have been possible without the volunteers who put so much effort into making a success.

MONDAY MEETING MAY 12th 2014

Eleven members and one guest Christine Lorraine were present.

We had our monthly board meeting and a lot was discussed and some decisions made.

After a big night in Ganmain we all needed a night of post mortem and it was agreed that we produced a great advert for Coolamon Rotary, Wagga Wagga Sunrise and Rotary in general.   President Dick Jennings thanked all involved in making the effort to ensure that we succeeded.  The Ganmain Hall came in for special praise as a good venue for these sorts of functions.

President Dick reminded all members of Sue and Max Chapman’s garden tour and music this coming Saturday Dick asked all members to support Sue and Max with their fund raising or the Wagga Wagga Sunrise club’s projects.

Ian Jennings asked members to invite suitable guest speakers along.  Ian also promoted the upcoming trivia night in aid of the Coolamon Ganmain Hospital Auxiliary to be held on Friday 23rd May at the Coolamon Sports Club.

The Pig

A journalist became lost on the back roads and stopped at a farm to get directions. As he was talking to the farmer he noticed a pig with a wooden leg. “How did the pig get a wooden leg?” he asked the farmer.

“Well”, said the farmer, “that’s a very special pig. One night not too long ago we had a fire start in the barn, and that pig set up a great squealing that woke everyone, and by the time we got there he had herded all the other animals out of the barn. Saved ’em all.”

“And that was when he hurt his leg?” asked the journalist anxious for a story.

“Nope, he pulled through that just fine.” said the farmer.

“Though a while later, I was back in the woods when a bear attacked me. Well, sir, that pig was near by and he came running and set on that bear and chased him off. Saved me for sure.”

“Wow! So the bear injured his leg then?” questioned the journalist.

“Nope. He came away without a scratch. Though a few days later, my tractor turned over in a ditch and I was knocked unconscious. Well, that pig dove into the ditch and pulled me out before I got cut up in the machinery.”

“Ahh! So his leg got caught by the combine?” asked the newsman.

“Noooope. We both walked away from that one.” says the farmer.

“So how did he get the wooden leg?” the reporter quized.

“Well”, the farmer replied, “A pig that good, you can’t eat all at once.”

Susan Glassford receiving her Paul Harris Award from PDG Fred Loneragan, DG Geoff Tancred and His Excellency Isaiya Kabira.

After eleven years a  member of the Rotary Club of Coolamon and being a member of EREY or Every Rotarian Every Year, known in Australia as the Centurion Club where a Rotarian donates US$100 per year to the Rotary Foundation entitles the donor to award a Paul Harris Fellowship to a person of their own choosing.

I have now accumulated 1,000 Foundation Recognition points and decided to award Susan the PHF.  In my opinion well deserved for supporting me in Rotary for the past 11 years.  It was also apt that Susan was recognised this way in the presence of her son Darius and her granddaughter Sasha.

Thank you Susan.

MONDAY MEETING MAY 5th 2014

Last night we had the pleasure of the company of Libby Cruikshank our guest speaker for the evening.

Libby used to be the chemist in charge at the Coolamon Pharmacy.  Libby now lives on a farm outside of Coolamon and works part time for the Coolamon Shire with Medicare Local.  Medicare Local provides preventative care to offset the likelihood of health problems before they happen.  This is a wonderful idea and deserves full support form all sides of politics.

Libby gave a sincere and informative presentation on what Medicare Local does and we learnt that they also conduct safe food handling classes, Men’s Shed guidance, ageing population needs and preventative medical care.  We all agreed that we need to look at ways that Rotary can help Libby continue her work in our Shire.

As you all know Max Chapman was a member of our club and is now a member of the Wagga Wagga Sunrise Club.  Sue and Max are having an Open Garden Day at their home in Wagga Wagga.

ROTARY INFORMATION

DISTRICT 9700 ASSEMBLY GRENFELL 2014

This weekend we went to Grenfell for the D9700 Assembly.  It was COLD very COLD however the warmth of Rotarains in fellowship and a common purpose far outweighed the COLD.  The Rotary Club of Grenfell put on another good day for us all around 150  attended a good roll up.

District Assembly is where the incoming board members of each club in our District get to refresh and learn from our District Board on what is expected of us during the next Rotary year.   The day was conducted by our District Trainer Mary Brell from Orange Daybreak.

DGE David Kennedy introduced the theme for 2014-2015 Light Up Rotary:

RI President-elect Gary C.K. Huang chose Light Up Rotary as his theme for 2014-15. Huang was inspired by the teachings of Chinese philosopher Confucius who said: “It is better to light a single candle, than to sit and curse the darkness.”

“There are so many problems in the world, so many people who need help. Many people say, ‘There’s nothing I can do.’ So they sit there doing nothing. Meanwhile everything stays dark,” Huang told the 537 district governors and their spouses and partners who are attending the 2014 International Assembly in San Diego, California.

“The Rotary way is the Confucius way. The Rotary way is to light a candle. I light one, you light one, 1.2 million Rotarians light one. Together, we light up the world,” said Huang, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Taipei in Taiwan.

The Dream

A man goes into his son’s room to wish him goodnight. His son is having a nightmare – the man wakes him and asks his son if he is OK? The son replies he is scared because he dreamt that Auntie Susie had died. The father assures the son that Auntie Susie is fine and sends him to bed.

The next day, Auntie Susie dies.

One week later, the man again goes into his son’s room to wish him goodnight. His son is having another nightmare – the man again wakes his son. The son this time says that he had dreamt that granddaddy had died. The father assures the son that granddaddy is fine and sends him to bed.

The next day, granddaddy dies.

One week later, the man again goes into his son’s room to wish him goodnight. His son is having another nightmare – the man again wakes his son. The son this time says that he had dreamt that daddy had died. The father assures the son that he is OK and sends the boy to bed.

The man goes to bed but cannot sleep because he is so terrified

The next day, the man is scared for his life- he is sure is going to die. After dressing he drives very cautiously to work fearful of a collision. He doesn’t eat lunch because he is scared of food poisoning. He avoids everyone for he is sure he will somehow be killed. He jumps at every noise, starts at every movement and hides under his desk.

Upon walking in his front door at the end of the day, he finds his wife. “Good God, Dear,” he proclaims, “I’ve just had the worst day of my entire life!”

She responds, “You think your day was bad, the milkman dropped dead on the doorstep this morning.”

I’ve had a unique opportunity to be a part of the polio eradication campaign from its very beginnings, more than a quarter century ago, to where we are now, which is truly “this close” to the end.

None of us knew back then how long eradication would take, or how many obstacles we’d meet along the way. I’m not sure how we would have felt about taking on the challenge if we had known. But there is one thing I know for sure: that every single day of the last 29 years has been worth it. Because over those years, we have saved millions of children from being paralyzed by polio. There’s no way to put a price tag on that. And today, we are closer than ever to a world in which no child will be paralyzed, ever again.

It’s been a long race to the finish line. That line is now in sight. But we’ll only cross it if we keep moving forward. And the only way to do that is with the help of every single Rotarian, everywhere in the world.

The first thing we need is your voice, and your advocacy. Think ahead to World Polio Day, on 24 October: What can your club and district do to raise awareness? Write letters to your elected officials, hold a purple pinkie fundraiser, plan an event with a local school. If you or someone you know has a story to tell about polio, share it at www.endpolionow.org/stories. The most important thing is to keep the momentum going. Let your community, and the world, know that the fight against polio is at its most critical stage yet.

I’m glad to report that the End Polio Now – Make History Today campaign is going well. Rotary met the terms of the new agreement with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and received US$70 million in matching funds in January, which will be fully committed in this calendar year. We have four more years of this agreement remaining, during which the Gates Foundation will match two-to-one every dollar Rotary spends on polio, to a maximum of $35 million per year. I encourage all of you to do what you can to help us make the most of this opportunity. I know that together, we can engage Rotary to end polio – and change the world, forever.

His Excellency Ambassador Isaiya Kabira from Kenya who will be our honoured guest speaker at our International Kenyan Night this Saturday May 10th in Ganmain.
