GRAVITATIONAL WAVES

The club was treated to an excellent presentation Monday night by Dr Allan Ernest, professor of astrophysics at CSU and a former resident of Coolamon.  Allan gave a thoroughly engaging talk describing the recent discovery of gravitational waves, how they were detected, and the significance of this discovery for science and humanity.  Even though much of the content was challenging to understand because it dealt with concepts that were unfamiliar to most of us, Allan did a great job explaining things and illustrating his points with very helpful graphics.

The full significance of the findings actually remains to be seen, but Allan likened their potential impact to the changes that followed Galileo’s exploration of the heavens with a telescope.  Although gravity waves are very difficult to detect, the technological advances required to detect them will likely have scientific applications far beyond cosmological research.  The engagement of the audience with Allan’s talk was evident from the extensive number of questions asked of the speaker at the end of his talk.  Paul thanked Allan for his excellent talk and presented him with our usual token of appreciation, a kangaroo hide change purse.

The ShelterBox fundraiser for victims of the cyclone in Fiji is on for Ganmain on Saturday morning.   Rostered on from 8:00-10:00 are Wayne, Trevor, Ted, Myffy, Bernie, and Don; Leslie, Paul, John and Garth are rostered on from 10:00-12:00.

One Fight Unite RAGES want to thank David Pocock most sincerely for signing the ‘SAY No’ poster. David signed the poster shortly after the match recently played in Perth Western Australia showing his support for the campaign even though he had just sustained an injury.
David Pocock, a rugby player extraordinaire grew up in a farming area in Zimbabwe. Due to political unrest in this country his family moved to Brisbane, Australia to start a new life in 2002.

David captained the Australian U20s at the Junior World Championship in 2008 and later that year made his Wallaby debut against New Zealand in Hong Kong. In 2010 he was awarded the John Eales Medal. In 2011 he played in the Rugby World Cup.

(Reuters) – An executive with a Beverly Hills gallery and auction house has pleaded guilty of conspiring to smuggling at least $1 million in animal products that included rhino horn and elephant ivory, federal prosecutors said on Wednesday.

Joseph Chait, 38, a senior auction administrator with I.M. Chait Gallery/Auctioneers, could be sentenced to up to five years in prison on the wildlife smuggling charge, the U.S. Justice Department said.

He also faces a maximum prison term of five years after pleading guilty to violating a federal law that bans trade involving illegally gained wildlife, they said.

Chait falsified customs forms by stating ivory and rhino horn were made of bone, wood or plastic. After a rhino carving sold at auction for $230,000, Chait made false documents putting the value at $108.75, and saying the object was made of plastic, the U.S. Department of Justice said.

Lawyers for Chait were not immediately available for comment.

The case comes as conservationists and law enforcement officials in the United States and globally have been trying to crack down on the illegal trade in products from the two threatened species.

Rhino horn sells at prices higher than gold in places such as Vietnam, where a belief with no basis in science has emerged in the past few years that it can be used to cure cancer.

South Africa, which has more rhinos than any other country in Africa, saw nearly 1,200 of the animals killed by poachers in 2015, its environment ministry said.

Making up a meeting.  It is customary in Rotary that when you travel to another area away fomr your club that you attend the nearest Rotary Club to make up a missed meeting at your own club.  I do not do this as a habit or because I have ot but because I want to.  Meeting other Rotarians in other ares around teh world is one way of making great new friends and learning about that club and the area that they represent.

This week I attended the  Rotary Club of Beechworth in NE Victoria.  A delightful town and very pretty this time of year being Autumn.  The members at Beechworth made Susan and I very welcome indeed.  The meeting was a membership night where Beechworth invited prospective members to attend and learn about Rotary and what Rotary does.

President George Browne welcomed all the members and the prospective new members and invited a few including myself to do a 5 minute spot.

MARCH IS ROTARY’S WATER & SANITATION MONTH

Feb 2016. In the midst of a serious drought it is interesting to see how certain animals manage the situation. This hole in a ‘dry’ riverbed was dug by an Elephant which becomes an important life line for other animals to make use of. Here a Kudu bull is quenching his thirst whilst two male Impala wait their turn. There were a number of different species that made use of this waterhole that I saw. From Baboons, Bushbuck, various birds etc.

Another very busy week for the Rotary Club of Coolamon.

Last week we went to Wagga Wagga to support Polio Plus by going to the movies.  30 members, partners and friends attended.   It was also an excellent turn out from the Wagga and surrounding Rotary clubs.  Dame Maggie Smith starred and it was based on a true story.  Most enjoyable night which started with a meal at the Thirsty Crow!

DG’s Second Coming March 7th 2016

Monday night we had the pleasure of the second visit by our DG Gary Roberts and Marilyn Roberts.  Also present were the AG Bryan Short and his wife the AG Group 4 from Temora, Tony Sinclair and some of the members of Temora RC.

Present 13 members from Coolamon and our guests were:

DG Gary Roberts and Marilyn Roberts, AG Group 5 Bryan Short and Sally Short, AG Group 4 Tony Sinclair and visiting Rotarians from Temora, Brendon Fritsch, Peter Glasgow, Arthur Bradley and Lisa Love.

We had a jovial meeting with DG Gary promoting the upcoming D9700 DISCON. One of teh highlights of the conference will be Saturday night with a move from tradition in that we will be at a Beatnix Concert.  DG Gary and Marilyn have lined up some excellent speakers and the RIP representative will be PRIP Kalyan Banerjee.  Also PRIP Bill Boyd is teh key note speaker as Chair of WASRAG.

CLUB MATTERS:

PE Don Dyce spoke on the PETS training that he attended.  Don presented President Wayne with the Membership Development Award that our club received at PETS for achieving the highest retention rate over the past 3 years n D9700.

Reminder that D9700 Assembly is on at Grenfell on Sunday April 10th all incoming board members are requested ot attend.  Starts at 10 am at teh Grenfell High School.

MARCH 2016 

Some years ago, I was asked to speak at an Interact club in my home city of Colombo, Sri Lanka. I have always taken my interactions with Rotary youth very seriously, so I prepared my remarks carefully and put the same effort into my presentation that I would for any other event. After the meeting, I stayed to chat with a few of the Interactors, answering their questions and wishing them well.

I came out of the classroom where we had met into the autumn afternoon. The bright sun was shining directly into my eyes, so I found a bit of shade behind a pillar where I could wait for my ride.

As I stood there, hidden from view, I overheard a group of the very Interactors who had just listened to my speech. Naturally I was curious: What would they be saying? What had they taken away from my presentation? I quickly realized that what they had taken away was not at all what I had intended.

The fierce July sun beat down on us as we approached the field where the match was to take place. It wasn’t much of a soccer pitch, with its uneven terrain and rusty poles for goalposts, but the local teens we had met came ready to play. They guided us over the piles of bricks and broken tiles that separate their neighborhood community center from the field behind it and took their positions.

Much like any schoolyard competitors, incursions from grazing cows notwithstanding, players stretched and warmed up, took turns retrieving out-of-bounds balls, and, after the final goal, lined up to exchange high-fives. The Vietnamese contingent handily outscored our group of American Rotary volunteers, but the defeat was far from bitter. The five Rotarians, four Interactors, and two 20-something alumni of Rotary Youth Leadership Awards had already achieved what they had come to Vietnam to do: distribute durable soccer balls to promote play and to spread Rotary’s message of service and goodwill.

Australia First Country to Place Immediate Ban on Lion Trophies.

Above two members of a pride of lions that we met in South Africa, protected and as they should be.

Australian environment minister Greg Hunt made a bold and important move for the welfare of lions by signing an order banning any import or export of any trophy body part of a lion.

Hunting of lions for sport, show, and profit has become a major problem for wild lion populations over the past 25 years especially. A practice known as “canned hunting” has become unfortunately widespread in which lions are intentionally bred in captivity only to be more or less handed over to international hunters for sport. Often times in these circumstances the lions are drugged or baited, further adding to the gruesome inhumanity of it.

Due to a multitude of factors, the lion population has fallen to 40,000, 50% less than it was 25 years ago, according to the International Fund for Animal Welfare. There are many factors contributing to this such as habitat loss, human conflict, and skewing of the genetic balance within lion communities by removing large male lions for illegal hunting purposes.

Hunt announced the new policy during a “global march for lions” at Melbourne’s Federation Square and said the practice of canned hunting was “cruel” and “barbaric.”

Hope Update – Saving the Survivors

As with everything our Rhino girl does, Hope is taking everything in her stride! She is unflappable (or she is saving up all the cheekiness for later on – which is entirely possible knowing Hope).

Over the weekend she seemed to settle into her new surroundings. There was very little pacing or aimless trotting around her boma (enclosure). The one thing she definitely is, is hungry! She is polishing off all the feed that gets put out for her. This is great sign as animals who are under great stress tend not to eat and drink.

DESPERATE NEED FOR SHELTER IN FIJI IN THE WAKE OF CYCLONE WINSTON

ShelterBox Response Teams are working across Fiji to provide shelter for families after Cyclone Winston, the worst storm ever recorded in the southern hemisphere.

The storm hit on 20 February, bringing torrential rain, wind speeds of 200 mph, and 40ft waves to the country’s 330 islands. The sheer force of the storm has obliterated up to 90% of structures and left an estimated 120,000 people without shelter.

Our annual craft and produce markets will be held on Saturday, 26 March, 2016 (Easter Saturday) at the Up To Date Store in Coolamon.  

The market will open at 9:00 am and run through 2:00 pm, and will feature a unique event to Coolamon, the first ever Up To Date Store Art Battle!  Local artists and patrons of the market will contribute to artwork that will be judged and then raffled off afterward.  With running commentary by our own illustrious Dick Jennings, it will be an event you won’t want to miss!

Rotarian Mark Balla Shares His Story

Recently, Mark (a presenter at WWS7 in Sao Paulo in May 2015) presented at TEDx, New Zealand. In the talk you will hear about his organization and their first project in India completed very recently. This project is to build 15 toilets in a school of 500 kids. The Rotary Club of Box Hill Central in Australia (district 9810) and the Rotary Club of Nasik Road in India (district 3030) were partners.

They are now developing a more ambitious project, this time involving seven or eight schools and as many as 5000 children. Beyond that, over the next few years they intend to reach tens of thousands of children. Listen to the TEDx talk or visit the facebook page to learn more!

MEETING MONDAY FEBRUARY 29th. 2016

This week has been a very busy one for our members starting with the Presidents Elect Training Seminar held in Young at the weekend.  PE Don Dyce attended and will report to the club soon.  here are the 41 Presidents for 2016-2017 thanks Paul Murray for the photo.

On Saturday morning our club conducted a street raffle in Coolamon.  The winner of the load of firewood was Ricky Hard.  Thanks go to the volunteers; Daryl Breust, Ted Hutcheon, Garth Perkin, Wayne Lewis, Myffy Collette and Paul Weston.

Monday night’s meeting was held as a Vocational Services meeting in conjunction with Wagga Wagga Sunrise RC.  This was held in Ganmain at the Huff ‘n’ Puff Constructions complex of straw bale buildings.

Susan and John welcomed all 50 Rotarians and their partners to Huff n Puff and we all went on a tour of the 14 straw bale buildings that Huff and Puff have built in Ganmain.  This was followed by dinner at the Ganmain Hall catered for by the Ladies from St. Brendan’s Primary School.  Thanks go to Stephanie Plane and her team.  It was a great meal followed by a slide show of just some of the straw bale buildings that Huff n Puff Have built since 1998 all around Australia.

Special thanks go to the Wagga Wagga Sunrise club for making the effort to come out to Ganmain and share our Vocational visit with them.  Thanks also to Dave McKinley as Vocational Services Director of our club.  PE Don Dyce did a great job as Chair of the meeting.

Vanathy and I had the great honor of meeting Mrs. Danuta Wałęsa, wife to the former President of Poland, Lech Wałęsa. I gifted her with a Rotary crystal during our visit.

In rural Ghana, Rotary members supply clean water and sanitation facilities to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

Clean water is a basic need for human beings. When people, especially children, have access to clean water, they live healthier and more productive lives. However, at least 3,000 children die each day from diseases caused by unsafe water, which is what motivates our members to build wells, install rainwater harvesting systems, and teach community members how to maintain new infrastructure.

While very few people die of thirst, millions die from preventable waterborne diseases, providing the impetus for our members to also improve sanitation facilities in undeveloped countries. Members start by providing toilets and latrines that flush into a sewer or safe enclosure and then add education programs to promote hand-washing and other good hygiene habits.

The boomslang snake is native and restricted to Sub-Saharan Africa.

The boomslang snake has a highly potent venom, which it delivers through large fangs located in the back of the jaw. Boomslangs are able to open their jaws up to 170° when biting.  The venom of the boomslang is primarily a hemotoxin; it disables the blood clotting process and the victim may die as a result of internal and external bleeding. The venom has been observed to cause hemorrhage into tissues such as muscle and brain. Other signs and symptoms include headache, nausea, sleepiness, and mental disorders.

The mongoose which this story is about is the bravest little fellow that I came to know and loved in Kenya . This story by Rudyard Kipling was my favourite when I was a child.  Please down load it here and read it to your grandchildren, they will love it.

FEBRUARY IS ROTARY’S

Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month

The University of Queensland is proud to partner with The Rotary Foundation to provide a tailored Masters Degree, aimed at potential world and community leaders, designed to have a practical effect on addressing international and regional conflicts.

MEETING MONDAY FEBRUARY 22nd. 2016

Last night we celebrated two birthdays that of Rotary and that of our Secretary and PP Dr. Paul Weston.

We had a great night with three guests Helen Lewis, Chez Post and Susan Glassford.  As well we had our Group 5 Assistant Governor Bryan Short from the Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga visit us.  16 members attended to celebrate Rotary and Paul’s birthday.

The very lovely birthday cake made by Marie Jennings, many thanks Marie it was very much appreciated by all.

President Wayne Lewis welcomed all and some reminders:

• Friendship exchange billets April 25th-27th.  Don Dyce coordinating.
• Easter markets committee meeting 25th Feb at the Sports Club 7.30 pm.

There was a short slide show on the history of the birth of the Rotary Club of Chicago and Rotary International.

The first four Rotarians:

Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, Hiram Shorey, and Paul P. Harris.

The first Rotary meeting took place on 23 February 1905 Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram Shorey gathered at Loehr’s office in Room 711 of the Unity Building in downtown Chicago.

As of October 2015 Rotary has grown and now boasts:

Women in Rotary:

Until 1989, the Constitution and Bylaws of Rotary International stated that Rotary club membership was for males only. In 1978 the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, invited three women to become members. The RI board withdrew the charter of that club for violation of the RI Constitution. The club brought suit against RI claiming a violation of a state civil rights law which prevents discrimination of any form in business establishments or public accommodations.

1 July 2008, Catherine Noyer-Riveau, of Paris, France, Zone 11, elected to serve as the first woman on the Rotary International board.

Violent conflict can devastate a country’s society, economy and political governance. Coordinating projects that prevent or resolve conflict requires a tailored, sensitive approach. Rotarians can play a vital role in the peace building process by galvanizing members of their communities to identify and address the underlying causes of conflict. While the types of projects Rotarians develop vary greatly, the following examples may help your club or district identify action-oriented approaches to building and sustaining peace:

In 1988, when I was 16, I began to protest with other students for democracy, human rights, and social justice in my home country of Burma, now called Myanmar. Four years later, I was arrested and tortured for two months in an interrogation camp. I was shackled and beaten. I was not allowed to sleep. They put a cloth over my eyes and a hood over my head, so I could not tell the day from the night. They asked me the same questions over and over. It was quite similar to George Orwell’s 1984. After this, I was sent to a special court. I was given no lawyer, just sent directly to prison.

They did not want us to learn in prison, but I had a dream to go and study overseas when I was released. I convinced a guard to smuggle books to me. I received a dictionary to learn English and books on economics and philosophy. I dug a hole in the wall of my cell and hid the books and covered the hole with an image of the Buddha. I studied English at night and in the day I slept.

Elephant Family Pays their Respects by Sir David Attenborough  

This is simply amazing and tells us that he elephants have a developed brain and family structure way ahead of us humans. 

During the late 1950s, Blake became one of the best known British pop artists. His paintings from this time included imagery from advertisements, music hall entertainment, and wrestlers, often including collaged elements. Blake was included in group exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Arts and had his first solo exhibition in 1960.

In the ‘Young Contemporaries’ exhibition of 1961 in which he exhibited alongside David Hockney and R.B. Kitaj, he was first identified with the emerging British Pop Art movement. Blake won the (1961) John Moores junior award for Self Portrait with Badges. He came to wider public attention when, along with Pauline Boty, Derek Boshier and Peter Phillips, he featured in Ken Russell’s Monitor film on pop art, Pop Goes the Easel, broadcast on BBC television in 1962.

From 1963 Blake was represented by Robert Fraser placing him at the centre of swinging London and brought him into contact with leading figures of popular culture.

SOCCER BALLS FOR PEACE

Mac Miller and President Valerie Lord RC of Hollywood

Mac Miller, an Aussie, was a presenter at the recent Rotary World Peace Conference in California on January 15-16th.  mac also presents at Rotary clubs and has done a TEDx talk, amazing for a 10 year old soccer player!

“I’ve had a great time at the Rotary Club of Hollywood today. Thanks for making me feel so welcome. The club donated US$200 for soccer balls (this is AUS $300).”

At the age of 9 Mac was inspired to send soccer balls to kids in need around the world.  In the past three years Mac has built a website; raised funds; arranged for the Australian soldiers to take soccer balls to Afghanistan; met the Governor of Queensland; won a United Nations Association of Australia award; delivered soccer balls to the children of refugees in Australian refugee immigration detention centres, as well as over 4000 soccer balls to kids in 22 countries including Cambodia, Uganda, the Solomon Islands, Nepal, Tibet and the Maldives.

Mac has also written a book called ‘Football – Play It Forward.  A 10 Year Old’s Goal of Peace Through Soccer Balls’, which is already an Amazon #1 Best Seller.

Mac is a leader in the making. He spends his free time writing letters asking for support and speaking at events such as Rotary to raise money and awareness of the plight of children who have not had the same opportunities as him to play sport.

Last year Mac completed speaking tours of India and China.   As a guest of the Rotary, Mac has spoken to 33 schools and over 11,000 students about why he thinks soccer balls can be an instrument for peace.  He was invited back to Shanghai to complete a TEDx Talk.

Just recently Mac has been awarded a Paul Harris Fellow by a local Rotary Club in his home town of Brisbane.

Mac, now aged 12, is a talented soccer player who one day wants to play for the Australian Socceroos and Manchester United.

This is a great peace project to get behind.  A PHF at the age of 9.  Mac has been on National TV on The Project and the Today Show.

MEETING MONDAY FEBRUARY 15th. 2016

Trust that you all had a great Valentine’s Day last Sunday.

Last night was a Club Assembly for February.  19 members present another great turn out.  It was a lively meeting with many subjects under discussion:

• Henk advised all members that the half yearly funds are now due.
• Ian Durham has two candidates for RYLA both are of a high quality and both are to be supported.
• Reminder to pay Wayne asap for the Polio Plus movie night on March 3rd.
• Neil reported on a  quiet bingo night with a small profit.
• Myffy spoke on teh proposed Coolamon Shire monthly newspaper.  This was well received and a major project to be undertaken by our club, all systems go and it is looking good, very good.
• Reminders for the D9700 Assembly and Club Directors training to be held at the Grenfell High School on Sunday April 10th starting at 9.00 am.  It is highly recommended that all of our incoming directors attend.
• New street raffle set for Sunday 27th February starting at 6.30 am.  The roster will be sent round to all members.
• Book now for the D 9700 Conference, always a great event to learn about Rotary.  The costs are very reasonable and being in Wagga this year easy to get to.
• Change over night 2016 dates to consider are Monday 27th June or Monday 4th July.
• Huff ‘n’  Puff Vocational visit with Wagga Wagga Sunrise so far 28 members and guests are booked in.  Sunrise will have their numbers this week.  Meet at 6.30 pm in Cave Street at the big white straw bale building.  Tour of all 14 straw bale buildings then dinner in the Ganmain Hall followed by a presentation on straw bale buildings and fellowship.  BYO.
• RAGES news included the Borneo challenge for the orangutans.

All in all  a great night of club business  and fellowship.

Our best wishes to Leslie as Leslie recovers from her recent operation.

Next Monday night we will have a birthday party for Rotary 111 years old.  It will also be Paul’s birthday.  Not Paul Harris, Paul Weston.

Engineer Accidentally Gets Sent To Hell By Mistake…

An engineer dies and reports to the pearly gates. St. Peter checks his dossier and says, “Ah, you’re an engineer — you’re in the wrong place.”

So, the engineer reports to the gates of hell and is let in. Pretty soon, the engineer gets dissatisfied with the level of comfort in hell, and starts designing and building improvements. After awhile, they’ve got air conditioning and flush toilets and escalators, and the engineer is a pretty popular guy.

One day, God calls Satan up on the telephone and says with a sneer, “So, how’s it going down there in hell?”

Satan replies, “Hey, things are going great. We’ve got air conditioning and flush toilets and escalators, and there’s no telling what this engineer is going to come up with next.”

God replies, “What??? You’ve got an engineer? That’s a mistake — he should never have gotten down there; send him up here.”

Satan says, “No way. I like having an engineer on the staff, and I’m keeping him.”

God says, “Send him back up here or I’ll sue.”

Satan laughs uproariously and answers, “Yeah, right. And just where are YOU going to get a lawyer?”

Every three years, members from Rotary districts across the globe gather in Chicago to review and vote on proposed legislation. The Council on Legislation is an essential part of Rotary’s governance. Learn more about the Council on Legislation process and review proposed legislation for the 2016 Council, as well as decisions made at previous meetings.

The Council will start with a training and opening session on Sunday, 10 April, at 15:00. After that, sessions will begin daily at 09:00 and end at 17:30. Check the schedule in the registration book for details.

The 2016 Council on Legislation is drawing near. In anticipation of this event, this book containing all legislation to be proposed at the Council has been prepared for your review. The Constitution of Rotary International provides that the Council on Legislation meet every three years at a site determined by the RI Board of Directors. In 2016, the Council on Legislation is scheduled to meet from 10-15 April in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

Griffith daddy long legs kills baby brown snake!

Hanging on a Weethalle farm near West Wyalong “like a trophy”, a brown snake appears to have met its fate after slithering into enemy territory.

But this wasn’t any typical bush predator.

According to farmer Patrick Lees, the snake was killed by a garden variety daddy longlegs – the fangless, venomless “underdog” of the spider world.

“It’s typical Australia,” Mr Lees said.

“I saw it from a distance and thought ‘someone is going to be a hero here’. There’s a few redbacks around, but I wasn’t expecting it to be a daddy longlegs.”

Mr Lees said the snake has been hanging in the same position since Saturday.

“I can’t take down his trophy; he’s earned it,” he said.

On 2 December, a terrorist attack killed 14 people and wounded more than 20 others in San Bernardino, California.

Less than two months later, an event nearby focused on peace: the Rotary World Peace Conference. The two-day meeting on 15-16 January brought together experts from around the world to explore ideas and solutions to violence and conflict.

The conference was the first of five Rotary presidential conferences planned for this year.

San Bernardino County official Janice Rutherford, a member of the Rotary Club of Fontana, California, told attendees at the opening general session that the conference couldn’t be timelier.

“Now more than ever, we need to come together and create peace and reduce human suffering,” said Rutherford, who declared 15 January 2016 Rotary World Peace Day and a Day of Peace for San Bernardino County. “We appreciate your commitment to exploring these options and taking them back to your community and the rest of the world.”

MEETING MONDAY FEBRUARY 8th. 2016

Tonight we had the pleasure of having our own members Leslie and Paul Weston, give a very informative and enjoyable presentation on how the USA Presidential election works.

19 members attended an excellent turn out and we had one Guest Marilyn Jennings.

President Wayne Lewis welcomed all and raised an invitation to our club to be hosts for the District 5610 Friendship Exchange .  The 12 members (6 couples) arrive in Wagga on the 25th April straight after the D9700 DISCON.  The committee is looking for 6 hosts for the three nights in Coolamon.   Please let PE Don Dyce if you can host one or more couples for that period, 25th, 26th and 27th April.

Secretary Paul Weston read out the board’s resolutions from the last Board meeting including a yearly donation to the Coolamon Shire Emergency fund which was well received by the members.  Among other resolutions the Board decided to support the formation of a Coolamon newspaper with Myffy Collette and Bernadette Milne in charge.

Reminder that next week 15th February will be a Club Assembly followed by the meeting on the 22nd February to celebrate Rotary’s 111th Birthday.

We learned so much tonight!

1. Caucus is (in North America and New Zealand) a meeting of the members of a legislative body who are members of a particular political party, to select candidates or decide policy.
2. Primaries a primary is a state-level election where party members vote to choose a candidate affiliated with their political party. Party candidates selected in a primary then run against each other in a general election. Thirty-four U.S. states conduct primary elections.

USA Electoral College

The Electoral College is a process, not a place. The founding fathers established it in the Constitution as a compromise between election of the President by a vote in Congress and election of the President by a popular vote of qualified citizens.

The Electoral College process consists of the selection of the electors, the meeting of the electors where they vote for President and Vice President, and the counting of the electoral votes by Congress.

The Electoral College consists of 538 electors. A majority of 270 electoral votes is required to elect the President.

The above notes were explained by Paul and Leslie and some of the highlights of the talk were:

The Iowa Caucus and the New Hampshire primaries are an important make or break start to the ultimate goal of electing the President of the USA.  The New Hampshire primaries are held today, Tuesday 9th February.

A PAC is a Political Action Committee and a Super PAC is a group of PACs and they raise funds for their candidate of choice. Technically known as independent expenditure-only committees, super PACs may raise unlimited sums of money from corporations, unions, associations and individuals, then spend unlimited sums to overtly advocate for or against political candidates.

So a complex system which goes on for 18 months before the actual election of the President on Tuesday November 8th 2016.  Voting is not compulsory in the USA.  The Electoral College elects the President who needs 270 electoral votes to become President.  Paul says that it always is on a knife edge and can swing either way as shown by the election of George W. Bush in 2000 when only 567 votes out of 6 million, cast in Florida, decided the outcome and hence the war in Iraq and the subsequent rise of ISIS today.

While all this is going in in the USA they held the Super Bowl where the Denver Broncos became World Champions. One of the highlights was the advertising and here is one of them which we can all relate to.  It took 3 days 40 sheep two dogs and one human in it’s making.  Just brilliant!

Real estate mogul Donald Trump’s sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, have come under fire after some gruesome photos showing them posing with a dead leopard and holding a severed elephant tail were released online (see them all here). The photos were taken during a hunting trip in Zimbabwe and originally posted on the Hunting Legends website. They were quickly denounced by PETA and other animal rights and conservation groups.

Soul of the Elephant

Despite living in the wild in Botswana for 30 years, filming, researching and exploring the world they have come to know so well, award-winning filmmakers and conservationists Dereck and Beverly Joubert say they are often still surprised by what they come across on their journeys. Such was the case when the couple were exploring the backwaters of the bush one day and stumbled upon the skulls of two large bull elephants with their ivory tusks intact. To the Jouberts, this is always cause for celebration because it means the giants died of natural causes and not, for example, from poaching, snares or bullets.

Dereck and Beverly Joubert are award-winning filmmakers from Botswana who have been Explorers-in-Residence for over four years. Their mission is the conservation and understanding of the large predators and key African wildlife species that determine the course of all conservation in Africa.

They have been filming, researching, and exploring in Africa for over 25 years. Their coverage of unique predator behaviour has resulted in 22 films, 10 books, six scientific papers, and many articles for National Geographic magazine. This body of work has resulted in five Emmys, a Peabody, the World Ecology Award, and the recent induction into the American Academy of Achievement. With their stunning cinematographic storytelling they bring the very essence of our beautiful nature to life.

PEACE FELLOWSHIPS

WHAT ARE ROTARY PEACE FELLOWSHIPS?

Each year, Rotary selects up to 100 individuals from around the world to receive fully funded academic fellowships at one of our peace centers. These fellowships cover tuition and fees, room and board, round-trip transportation, and all internship and field-study expenses.

In just over a decade, the Rotary Peace Centers have trained more than 900 fellows for careers in peace building. Many of them go on to serve as leaders in national governments, NGOs, the military, law enforcement, and international organizations like the United Nations and World Bank.

Two types of peace fellowships are available.

MEETING MONDAY FEBRUARY 1st. 2016

We held a club assembly last night and we had a very good roll up of our members.  Among the subjects discussed were:

• New Year’s Eve results a profit of $1,422 from the night and excellent result.

Reminder next week’s meeting is very topical and Leslie and Paul Weston will talk on the upcoming USA Presidential race to the White House.  It will be a very interesting talk and should be fascinating to get Leslie and Paul’s insight on this important event in 2016 which ultimately affects the whole world.  Bring your partner and guests.

In life, sometimes the experiences that matter the most are the briefest. They pass in the blink of an eye: a few days, a few hours, a few moments. They are the experiences that illuminate the landscape of our memory, shining brightly even years later. They are the moments in which we see, suddenly, something we had not seen; we understand something we had not understood; we forge a connection we had not expected.

For me, this has been a Rotary year like no other. I have been around the world, traversing countries and continents. I have been to places I had never seen before, and I have returned to familiar places and seen them, as for the first time, through the lens of Rotary.

When you travel for Rotary, you travel with a different sense of perspective and a different sense of purpose. There is an awareness of being part of something larger than yourself. When you board a plane or a train, or leave your home in the dark hours of early morning, you may be leaving for lands unknown – but at your destination, there will be no strangers. There will be Rotarians, waiting and welcoming. There will be work to do, something to learn, and perhaps something to teach.

DISTRICT LEADERS SET TO CELEBRATE FOUNDATION’S CENTENNIAL

Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair Ray Klinginsmith asked district governors in training at the International Assembly to lead the celebration of the Foundation’s centennial year, 2016-17.

“You are the primary contacts between the Foundation and our 34,000 Rotary clubs in the world. The success of the centennial celebration is largely in your hands,” said Klinginsmith at a 19 January general session. “Catch the spirit and spread the word about the importance of celebrating our success.”

Since the Foundation was established in 1917, it has spent more than $3 billion on programs and projects to improve the lives of millions worldwide, said Klinginsmith.

The centennial celebration officially kicks off in May at the Rotary Convention in Korea and culminates at the 2017 convention in Atlanta.

Tanzania elephant poachers kill British helicopter pilot

A British helicopter pilot has been shot dead by elephant poachers in Tanzania, the conservation charity for which he was working has said.

The Friedkin Conservation Fund said Roger Gower had been tracking poachers on Friday in the Maswa Game Reserve when they fired on his helicopter.

One of his colleagues said he had been shot as he flew near the carcass of one of three elephants killed by poachers.

Charity founder Dan Friedkin said the organisation had lost “a dear friend”.

The Foreign Office has confirmed the death of a UK national in Tanzania and said it was providing assistance to the family.

Photographs of the crashed helicopter showed apparent bullet holes in the fuselage. A spokesman from Tanzania National Parks, Pascal Shelutete, said: “Three elephant carcasses that were found indicated that whoever shot the chopper down was on a serious illegal hunting spree.” He added that poachers can be “heavily armed with sophisticated military weaponry”.

Three men have been arrested by Tanzanian police. The natural resources and tourism minister, Jumanne Maghembe, said: “The suspects are in the hands of police. They are cooperating, and soon more people making up the poaching gang will be netted and brought to justice.”

FOOTNOTE

The banner of a Hampshire based rotary club has been put on display in space.

The Rotary Club of Locks Heath Banner is taking pride of place in a window of the International Space Station (ISS).

It’s all thanks to astronaut Major Tim Peake, who is part way through a six month mission on the ISS.

Major Peake’s godmother is a member of the Locks Heath club.

When fellow member John Hopwood found out, he asked if an approach could be made to see if Major Peake would take the banner and display it.

Mr Hopwood, who is the club’s publicity relations chairman, was taken aback when the answer was yes.
