MEETING MONDAY AUGUST 10th. 2015

Apologies President Wayne Lewis.

Our guest tonight was Daryl Breust attending his last meeting as a potential member of our club.  The Board has extended an invitation to Daryl to join our club.

Tonight we had a fellowship meeting followed by the August Board meeting.  Tonight it was the turn of Don Dyce our President Elect to give a 10 minute summary of his life to date.

Don and Sally

Don and Sally at Diani Beach Kenya.

Don Dyce has had a full and varied life however his love is farming and that is what he has been doing for many years.  Don has many old friends in the club going back to school in Coolamon and beyond.  His family settled in the Coolamon area in 1896.  Don has three children by his first wife.

Don is an enterprising man and started his journey by raising a few pigs and on sale were enough to get him started in real estate in Wagga.  He has been an artist and a writer and then went back to the land on the retirement of his father.  Don purchased the next door property from PP Bill Innes, now passed on,  so Don’s connections ot Coolamon Rotary go back a long way and we look forward to his year as our President 2016-2017.

I got to know Don a whole lot better by climbing Mount Kenya with him.  It is here he was called “BP” the quiet achiever and that he is.  Don seen below leading the Rotary team up Mount Kenya to the summit of Point Lenana.

So far we have raised around $45,000 from the climb for our beneficiaries including Legacy Australia.

Thank you Don for your support and leadership on this adventure!!!

 Coffin

A funeral procession pulled into a cemetery. Several carloads of family members followed a black truck towing a boat with a coffin in it.
A passer-by remarked, “That guy must have been a very avid fisherman.”
“Oh, he still is,” remarked one of the mourners. As a matter of fact, he’s headed off to the lake as soon as we bury his wife.”

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT

 K.R. “RAVI” RAVINDRAN

Ravi 01

Africa goes one year without a case of polio

Just a few days from now, on 11 August, we will mark a tremendous milestone: one full year without a single case of polio caused by wild poliovirus in Africa.

The magnitude of this achievement can hardly be overstated. A polio-free Africa has been within sight, so near and yet so far, for over a decade. The hard work and commitment that have brought us to this point have been nothing short of heroic. Tens of thousands of health workers reached hundreds of millions of children with vaccine, in some of the most difficult conditions imaginable. Together, we have done what once seemed impossible: We have stopped polio in Africa.

Yet this progress, momentous as it is, is still fragile. As long as polio exists in the two remaining endemic countries of Pakistan and Afghanistan, the virus still has the potential to spread and to spark new outbreaks. Now, more than ever, we need the power of all of Rotary to carry us through to the end: not just a polio-free Africa, but a polio-free world.

Wherever you live, whether your country has just conquered polio or has been polio-free for decades, we need your voice, and your help. I ask all of you to read and use the materials in thistool kit to find ways to raise awareness in your community, and beyond. We need every Rotarian, in every Rotary club, to be talking about polio: making sure that media outlets report on our progress and our elected officials see polio eradication as a global priority. Your grassroots work helps drive the increased media coverage we have seen in the past year, which in turn drives global backing of our work to eradicate polio. Together, we will keep polio front and center in our communities and on our national agendas, keeping up the energy and the momentum that will push us through to the finish.

The battle in Africa has, for the moment, been won, but we need the strength of every Rotarian to help us win the war. Together, we will End Polio Now and truly Be a Gift to the World.

Warm regards,
K.R. Ravindran
President, Rotary International

Experience: Victor Escat from France, Katarina Janzon from Sweden and Yohsuke Takata from Japan are enjoying studying in Wagga. Picture: Les Smith. Wagga Wagga Advertiser.

While the rest of us are shivering this winter Swedish exchange student, Katarina Janzon, feels quite comfortable with winters at home generally getting down to minus 20 degrees.

Katarina is currently studying at Wagga High School with two other exchange students, Victor Escat  from France and Yoh Takata from Japan.

The three students are on the Rotary Youth Exchange for 12 months staying with host families around Wagga.

With 1040 students Wagga high is a lot bigger than Katarina’s school at home which has just 150 students.

At home, the school day is shorter, classes are longer and students cannot choose their subjects.

Victor’s school in France is around the same size as Wagga and he cannot choose subjects and the school day is much longer.

THE LOST GIRLS OF SOUTH SUDAN AND THE ROTARIAN WHO FOUND THEM.

Groenendijk and younger kids take a break from jumping on the center’s trampoline. Staff say it’s her energy that holds Confident Children out of Conflict together.

From the of The Rotarian

The girls were alone. Their families were dead, or gone, or lost in the broken landscape of southern Sudan. They had nowhere to turn, and no one to turn to. Some lived in the market, others in the cemetery. When Cathy Groenendijk saw them, she couldn’t help herself. She offered them tea, then some food, then a place to sleep in her guesthouse.

“In the morning, we would sit together and talk about what had happened the night before,” Groenendijk remembers. “And what I heard I could not believe. I could not believe it.”

One girl’s father had died, and after the funeral, she never saw her mother again. She was living on the streets with some other kids when four men started chasing them. The other girls were faster. She fell behind and was caught and raped by all four men. Groenendijk knew a doctor who repaired the physical damage, saving her life.

Leonine Hodge and Fran and Emma Atkinson, sisters of the late Christine Atkinson, passed through Coolamon this last week, taking with them Christine’s personal collection of household goods to donate to a charity close to Christine’s heart, Project Hope. Coolamon Rotary along with the Coolamon and Ganmain community pitched in with their help and generosity to support the children of Makindu, Kenya.

A trailer was loaded with the boxed goods and the Atkinson sisters continued on to Bathurst to deliver everything to a container that will be leaving this month for Makindu. Coolamon Rotary extend their appreciation to all who supported Christine’s project and were most impressed with the generosity shown.

Next week we have a normal meeting followed by a board meeting.  You are all welcome to attend both meetings even if you are not on the board.  An invitation to our new members is extended to come and see what we do at a board meeting.

A burglar broke into a house one night. He shined his flashlight around, looking for valuables, and when he picked up a jewelry box to place in his sack, a strange, disembodied voice echoed from the dark saying, “Jesus is watching you.”He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his flashlight off, and froze. When he heard nothing more after a bit, he shook his head, then clicked the light on and began searching for more valuables. After just a few seconds, clear as a bell, he heard “Jesus is watching you.”

Freaked out, he shined his light around frantically, looking for the source of the voice. Finally, in the corner of the room, his flashlight beam came to rest on a parrot.

“Did you say that?” He hissed at the parrot.

“Yep,” the parrot confessed, then squawked, “I’m just trying to warn you.”
The burglar relaxed. “Warn me, huh? Who in the world are you?”

“Moses,” replied the bird.
“Moses?” The burglar laughed. “What kind of people would name a bird Moses?”

Suddenly, he felt a giant shadow materializing behind him.

“The kind of people who would name a Rottweiler Jesus.”

AUGUST MESSAGE 2015

In the 1930s, Ole Kirk Christiansen, a Danish carpenter, had a wooden sign hanging on his wall that read, Det bedste er ikke for godt: “Only the best is good enough.” Today, Christiansen is remembered as the inventor of Lego, the colorful plastic bricks beloved by children around the world. But in the early days of the Lego company, its signature product was a wooden duck – one built to the highest standards, out of aged beech, with three coats of clear varnish. Lego’s company history tells how Christiansen used his ducks to teach a lesson in quality to his son, Godtfred Kirk:

One evening, when I came into the office, I said to my father: “It’s been a good day today, Dad. We’ve earned a little more.” “Oh,” said Dad, “what do you mean?” “Well, I’ve just been to the station with two boxes of our toy ducks for the Danish Co op. Normally they get three coats of varnish, but since it’s for the Co-op, I only gave them two. So I saved the business a bit of money.” He looked at me in dismay. “Godtfred, fetch those boxes back. Unpack them and give the ducks another coat of varnish. You’re not going to bed until the work’s done – and you’ll do it all on your own.” There was no arguing with Dad. And it was a lesson for me about what quality meant.

Russell Brand

Wow! The very very lovely, very talented, genius of a man – Russell Brand says no for our endangered species on our planet. What an honour. A comedian, an actor and most importantly a revolutionary speaker of our time. We absolutely adore Russell and can’t thank him enough for his wonderful words of truth and wisdom which are so rightly needed in the world of today.

This is akin to poaching but from wealthy men and women, mainly from the USA.  It has surprised me that not many people in the media know that big game hunting is still practiced in the world especially in many parts of Africa.  Cecil the lion and his counterparts are worth far more alive than as body parts.  The killing of this majestic lion may be the catalyst that brings hunting of these endangered species to a complete stop.  Let us hope so.

The Mule

A busy farmer needed some help with tending to the animals. His mother-in-law offered to spend some time on his farm, and being as busy as he was, the farmer had no choice but to accept her offer.

A few days later, the farmer’s mother-in-law was killed when his mule kicked her.

Thousands of people from town who had heard about the death came to the poor lady’s funeral, many that the farmer didn’t even know. A minister noticed this, came up to the farmer, and asked him, “Why are there so many people here?”

The farmer answered, “Oh, they’re not here for the funeral. They want to buy the mule.”

A man and his wife were sitting in the living room and he said to her,

“Just so you know, I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle. If that ever happens, just pull the plug.”
His wife got up, unplugged the TV and threw out all of his beer.

ROTARY INFORMATION

This is BIG news from Rotary International and our polio plus campaign.

Today marks one year since Nigeria last reported a polio case caused by wild poliovirus, putting the country on the brink of eradicating the paralyzing disease.

The last case was reported on 24 July 2014 in the northern state of Kano. If no cases are reported in the coming weeks, the World Health Organization is expected to remove Nigeria from the list of countries where polio is endemic, leaving just two: Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Nigeria is the last polio-endemic country in Africa. The continent is poised to reach its own first full year without any illness from the virus on 11 August.

They created this event from scratch & have nurtured it into the incredible regional event that our community is so proud of today.

During Marilyn’s talk there was a shock announcement of their retirement from the event. It was however re-assured that the event would continue as a community run exhibition with Coolamon Shire Council as a supporting role.

MEETING MONDAY JULY 20th. 2015

We had several guests including our speaker Dr Jane Quinn from Charles Sturt University.  In all 13 members attended with some potential new members.  Daryl Breust, John Franklin, John Bond, Andrew Quinn and Helen Lewis.

President Wayne Lewis welcomed everyone and we got straight down to business.  There is a fund raising at the Allawah Lodge on August 1st for Nepal.  Contact Annette on 0428 560 082.

Dick Jennings informed us that the cut off for donations ot the Operation Hope appeal is set for Monday 27th July.

John Glassford reminded members that there is a Mount Kenya Climb Post Mortem on Saturday at 11.00 am in Temora at the Ex-Services Club.

Dr Jane Quinn gave a very interesting talk on toxicity in some of our plants grown in the area.  Jane said that the toxic plants cost upwards of $180 million in stock losses annually in the Southern region some of these plants are the panicum species such as Hairy Panic.  Grazing hairy panic causes severe liver damage.

Jane went on to describe a toxicological detective story on a case where the poisoning was not diagnosed correctly until they traced the movement of the animals. In this case it was due to grazing on the amaranthus plant found in a paddock where the animals only stayed for a short period the property was near Uranquinty.

The Bagpipes

Enjoy every moment of life. As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper’s cemetery in the Nova Scotia back country.

As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn’t stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight.
There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch.

I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late.

I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn’t know what else to do, so I started to play.

The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I’ve never played before for this homeless man

And as I played “Amazing Grace”, the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished, I packed my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head was hung low, my heart was full.

As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, “I never seen nothing like that before and I’ve been puttin’ in septic tanks for more than twenty years…………….”

ROTARY INFORMATION

AUSTRALIAN STUDENTS TAKE OPPORTUNITY BY THE HORNS

The rules of the Shaftesbury Rodeo Academy are simple: no school, no rodeo. It’s a message that teenagers who attend school at Bisley Farm, most of whom have never attended any school regularly, take seriously. Because come Friday night, these aspiring rodeo heroes want to join their friends to ride bulls for a heart-stopping eight seconds, if they last that long.

The school in rural Queensland, Australia, also teaches the boys, who are of the Wakka Wakka Aboriginal people, basic academics and farming skills, including how to care for crops and livestock. It’s a fairly common form of schooling in Australia, an alternative education for students with troubled backgrounds. For many of them, Bisley Farm is the best chance for them to improve their lives.

Read more about Thandi’s story.

Rhino are known to be able to reach speeds of 48 – 64 km per hour (30 – 40 miles per hour), something that our young Thembi is working very hard to achieve! A rhino calf will more than likely never meet its father but rhino mothers have a very nurturing nature. Last night we had a general meeting followed by a board meeting.  15 members attended a good roll up especially as it was a very cold night.  Myffy Collette gave a 3 minute presentation on her life which was most enjoyable.
Myffy was born in Yorkshire and went to a boarding school.  At 19 Myffy was working as a beauty consultant for Elizabeth Arden where she met an Australian girl and decided to migrate to Australia.  5 weeks on a boat and Myffy arrived in Sydney.  Myffy eventually met and married Dr Brian Clarke and they went for the country lifestyle starting in the Blue Mountains.
Myffy and Brian eventually settled in Ganmain and are a wonderful asset to our community.  President Wayne presented Myffy with a bouquet of flowers.

Last week Rotary International published a story on the formation of RAGES the Rotarian Action Group for Endangered Species:

New action group unites leaders to protect endangered species

Jane Goodall joins the Rotarian Action Group for Endangered Species’ “Say No!” campaign to promote animal conservation. Photo courtesy of RAGES

By Philip Merritt, vice chair of the Rotarian Action Group for Endangered Species and a member of the Rotary Club of Mabalacat Clark, Pampanga, Philippines

About three years ago, Rotary member John Glassford sent a message to the Rotarians on the Internet (ROTI) Fellowship’s discussion list asking if anyone had any ideas on how we could help stop the poaching of elephants. I responded: “Why don’t we start a Rotarian Action Group (RAG)?”, and from that point forward, it was a long journey to finally get the Rotarian Action Group for Endangered Species (RAGES) recognized by the RI Board in January.

Six Irish men were playing poker when one of them played a bad hand and died.

The rest drew straws to see who would tell his wife. One man draws the shortest straw and goes to his friend’s house to tell the wife.

The man says to her, “Your husband lost some money in the poker game and is afraid to come home.”

The wife says, “Tell him to drop dead!”

The man responds, “I’ll go tell him.”

MEETING MONDAY JULY 6th. 2015

Tonight we kicked off the new Rotary year with our guest speaker John Franklin from Coolamon speaking on the 25 years he worked in the Northern territory.
We had 14 members present to welcome President Wayne Lewis into the hot seat.  We also had 5 guests including Marilyn Jennings, Helen Lewis, Maureen Franklin and Christine Lorraine along with our guest speaker John Franklin.
President Wayne outlined some upcoming events and other items of interest including:
1.  That there will be a 3 minute talk based on alphabetical order each week form one of our members on their life!  Next Monday it will be Myffy Collette.
2.   We need to keep a record of our community hours, local, national and international.
3.  Wayne  passed around a list of Rotary Fellowships.
4.  We also discussed getting accredited to work with children.
5.  Myffy reported on the Coolamon Networking Meeting organised by Bronwyn Hatty.
6.  Thanks to Ted Hutcheon and Bernadette Milne for donating the prizes for the raffles at our change over night which raised $303.
6.  A request for all members to support the late Christine Atkinson’s container for Africa.
Dick Jennings put out a call for the following items to go to Bathurst to fill a container for our recently departed Christine Atkinson.  Unknown to us Christine was supporting an orphanage in Kenya before her untimely death.  Please bring items to next Monday night’s meeting as we need to fill a trailer.
“exercise books, mathematics books, reading books, textas, stickers, maps, posters, scissors, rulers, shoe laces, paintbrushes, paint, play dough, any craft bead items, marbles, matchbox cars, puzzles, cards, games, balls, hand washers, material, cottons, wool, knitting needles, elastic, buttons, ribbons, CD’s, dress up clothes, skipping ropes, black shoe polish, The schools colours are navy, brown and maroon and school uniform items, (red polo shirts, navy shorts, navy trousers, brown slacks and black shoes).
 John Franklin 1
John Franklin Guest Speaker
John gave an excellent narrative of his time in the Northern Territory as a Pastoral Officer.  Tonight John concentrated on Aboriginal Culture in the Northern Territory.  The Aboriginal community of the NT comprise 25% of the population of which 50% are gainfully employed.  25% are stay at home with home schooling for the children. 25% of the population are on welfare.  Herein lies the major problem facing them with the major drug of choice being alcohol.
John went on to describe many different problems facing the community due to alcohol and the reliance on welfare.  John was also very passionate about these people and feels that if left alone to make their own decisions on what is needed for their people and culture things would be far better off.  It was at times a controversial talk but most enlightening and thought provoking.
John Franklin 2

Helen Lewis and John Glassford won the raffles.  S@A Ted Hutcheon had a good time with the fines session.

7 Days in Australia

In the beginning God created day and night. He created day for footy matches, going to the beach and barbies. He created night for going prawning, sleeping and barbies. God saw that it was good.

Evening came and morning came and it was the second Day.

On the Second Day God created water – for surfing, swimming and barbies on the beach. God saw that it was good. Evening came and morning came and it was the Third Day.

On the Third Day God created the Earth to bring forth plants – to provide tobacco, malt and yeast for beer and wood for barbies. God saw that it was good. Evening came and morning came and it was the Fourth Day

On the Fourth Day God created animals and crustaceans for chops, sausages, steak and prawns for barbies. God saw that it was good. Evening came and morning came and it was the Fifth Day.

On the Fifth day God created a bloke – to go to the footy, enjoy the beach, drink the beer and eat the meat and prawns at barbies. God saw that it was good. Evening came and morning came and it was the Sixth Day.

On the Sixth Day God saw that this bloke was lonely and needed someone to go to the footy, surf, drink beer, eat and stand around the barbie with. So God created Mates, and God saw that they were good blokes. God saw that it was good. Evening came and morning came and it was the Seventh Day.

On the Seventh Day God looked around at the twinkling barbie fires, heard the hiss of opening beer cans and the raucous laughter of all the Blokes, smelled the aroma of grilled chops and sizzling prawns and God saw that it was good. well almost good. God saw that the blokes were tired and needed a rest.

So God created Sheilas – to clean the house, bear children, wash, cook and clean the barbie. God saw that it was not just good, it was better than that, it was bloody great! IT WAS AUSTRALIA

ONE FOR THE LADIES

A fairy tale for the assertive woman of the 21st century

Once upon a time, in a land far away, a beautiful, independent, self-assured princess happened upon a frog as she sat, contemplating ecological issues on the shores of an unpolluted pond in a verdant meadow near her castle.

The frog hopped into the princess’ lap and said, “Elegant Lady, I was once a handsome prince, until an evil witch cast a spell upon me. One kiss from you, however, and I will turn back into the dapper, young prince that I am and then, my sweet, we can marry and set up housekeeping in your castle with my mother, where you can prepare my meals, clean my clothes, bear my children, and forever feel grateful and happy doing so.”

That night, as the princess dined sumptuously on a repast of lightly sautééd frog legs seasoned in a white wine and onion cream sauce, she chuckled and thought to herself:

“I don’t think so.”

JULY 2015

We in Rotary aspire to great deeds. We admire those who gave great gifts to humanity: Abraham Lincoln, who gave the gift of human dignity to the downtrodden; Mother Teresa, who gave the gift of compassion to the forgotten; Mahatma Gandhi, who gave the gift of peaceful change to the oppressed. Their very lives became gifts to the world.

We can be inspired by their example. We can be inspired to ask, how can I, in the life that I live – without neglecting the responsibilities that are so dear to me – how can I, too, become a gift to the world? As I considered my theme, I thought of the lessons I have learned through my Hindu faith. I thought especially of the story of Sudama.

Sudama was a poor child and a bosom friend of Krishna, who was born in a royal lineage as an avatar – an incarnation of the divine. As the two boys grow up, they drift apart, and while Krishna becomes a military leader and king of great repute, Sudama remains a humble villager.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

The answer to the puzzle last week was 87 did you get it right?

 Rolls in Cape Tiown
 WHY?
 The Fridge

One morning at a doctor ‘s clinic a well built man arrives complaining of severe
back pain, the doctor examines him and asks OK what happened to your
back?

The patient replies “you know that I… work as a bouncer for a local night club? This morning I got home to my apartment early and heard a noise in my bedroom. On entering I knew someone had been with my wife and the balcony door was open. I rushed out the balcony door and did not find anyone.
As I looked down from the balcony I saw a man running out and he was dressing himself.
I grabbed the fridge and threw it at him.  That’s how I strained my back”The 2nd patient arrives looking as if he has been in a car wreck.
The doctor said “My previous patient looked bad, but you look terrible. What the hell happened to you?”
He replied, “You know I have been unemployed for a while now. Today was the first day at my new job. I forgot to set my alarm and was running late. I was running out of the building, getting dressed at the same time, and you wont believe it but I was hit by a fridge.”Then the 3rd patient arrives;
He even looks worse than the other two patients do and shivering like a reed.
The doctor is now shocked.
Again asks, “What the hell happened to you…..!!?””Well, it started like this…. I was sitting in my neighbor’s fridge”

EARLY CANCER DETECTION IS SAVING LIVES IN SRI LANKA

More than 20,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed every year in Sri Lanka, and many of them prove fatal. The Rotary Club of Colombo, Sri Lanka, set out 10 years ago to save some of those lives by establishing the Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Centre.

In partnership with the National Cancer Control Programme and the Ministry of Health, the center in Colombo has screened more than 35,000 patients, mostly low-income, and detected more than 7,500 cases of abnormalities that required further investigation. The Rotary Club of Birmingham, Alabama, USA, donated a mammography and ultrasound scanner to the center’s breast cancer screening facility.

The Colombo Rotary club is seeking to open early detection clinics in other easily accessible locations throughout Sri Lanka.

LATEST NEWS FROM RAGES.

Elephants are worth 76 times more alive than dead

310 Nbi

Africa’s elephants are under siege. Driven by foreign demand for ivory, poachers are killing these iconic animals faster than they can reproduce. More than 120,000 African elephants were poached from 2010 to 2013, and on average, one is now killed every 15 minutes somewhere across the continent.
The motivation for this carnage is the high price of ivory: A pair of elephant tusks can bring in about $21,000 on the black market. But according to a new report by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s iWorry campaign, every living elephant can generate $1.6 million for its local economy by attracting eco-tourists. In other words, a live elephant is worth 76 times more than a dead one.
