We heard an interesting presentation by three young women from the shire that have decided to raise efforts for needy residents of the shire via various fundraising programmes. Bronwyn Halden, Jacquie Brown, and Rebecca Bailey Brown described Run2Raise, the group they started and named because of their passion for running, although their fundraising ideas have nil to do with running. They have in mind a number of fundraisers that they wish to operate under the name of Rotary.
There was general consensus by club members present that this was a most worthy venture, and President Dick suggested the members of Run2Raise become Friends of Rotary and that a committee of club members be formed to liaise with Run2Raise, facilitating linkages to Rotary. Run2Raise members will meet soon to discuss the proposed arrangement and get back to us soon.

A seven year old boy was at the centre of a courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with the child custody law and regulations requiring that family unity be maintained to the degree possible. The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried out that they also beat him.
After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him. After two recesses to check legal references and confer with child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the England Football team, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.

Armicus Mayan
I have been in communication with a Maasai Moran called Armicus Mayan, (Armicus = translates as ‘dedicated to a faithful implementation of constitution). Armicus is studying to become a lawyer in Nairobi however he is building an eco-village on his home land near Mount Kenya.

Armicus Mayan & his vision to change the Maasai view & treatment of wildlife. As I’m sure you’re aware, money is scarce in Kenya & indeed much of Africa (not all) but there’s no help out there if you’ve got nothing. A 12 year old boy living in the Maasai community in Isiolo Kenya Armicus had been growing sick & sad at the communities treatment of all wildlife around him, he felt that people exploited animals & that firstly it was not right and secondly even if it was, it was not sustainable. Right on both counts! But how else can a Maasai community make money when all that people would buy was meat or foreigners would pay to kill animals so that they could sell meat, felt, teeth, bone, tusks & horn.
He now believes that people care enough about wildlife & they also care about fellow humans enough to reach out. Which is what Armicus is doing right now to us in Rotary.
In his own words Armicus says:
“Jackals are threatening to kill down our way of life as the Illngwesi Maasai community..I like the animals ,but what should I do to convince my fellow villagers that the animals are good; while their source of living (livestock), is attacked daily….just a few days ago, Mzee Olelegei lost 34 goats in two weeks…so far, the government and other wildlife agencies have not intervened…this risks to increase the rift between human and wildlife….conflict as it would be other words put……am lost..how can I help this?”
So Armicus wants is developing an eco-village and a place where his fellow villagers, the children, the Moran and the elders can encourage visitors and tourists to share in their way of life and learn the ways of the Maasai. Stage one is clean water and toilets.
“After installing the water tank for clean water at Oloimugi, I am also planning to build an eco-toilet to improve sanitation…Children to use that water in the tank to plant trees,learn all the best ways to conserve the environment……mothers are also struggling to fetch firewood far away…that is tiresome and time-consuming. Also, fetching firewood destroys our environment..cutting down of tree breaks the ecosystem… ..A bio-gas plant would help us since we only use cow or elephant dung.”
Immediate needs to get the village going include:
Water tanks and toilet cost: 25,000 Kenyan shillings..installation supplements..Kenyan shillings: 8,000 transportation: 5,000 Kenyan shillings..labour in installation plus food: 12000 Kenyan shillings. . toilet construction: Kenyan shillings 12,000.
TOTAL 60,000 Kenyan shillings or around $750.
This is the first project that we want to work with in conjunction with the Jane Goodall Institute in Kenya and RAGES. The details of the whole project will be published at a later date. The whole project complies with The Rotary Foundation’s 6 areas of focus. I am now working with the idea of getting a Rotary club on the ground in Kenya to work with us and the Jane Goodall Institute Kenya.
In the mean time we can help Armicus with stage 1 as above.

IMFR is the shortcut for “International Marathon Fellowship of Rotarians“. The idea of founding this organisation is based on the marathon of Paris in 2005, where a group of enthusiastic running Rotarian friends from Toulouse with Jean-Claude Brocart and Christophe Cruzel as the leaders were invited to run in occasion of the 100 year jubilee of Rotary.
The charter party of this international fellowship was celebrated in 2006 during the marathon in Berlin. The main idea of this fellowship is to organize one Rotarian event a year during an international marathon, where you can find new Rotarian friends and run for a beneficent purpose.
Other big events were organized in Amsterdam 2007, New York 2008, Médoc 2009, Vienna Marathon 2010, Great Barrier Reef Marathon 2011 in Townsville, Graz Marthon 2012 and the London Marathon in April 2013.
We heard a very interesting talk by Dr Jeff Weidenhamer, a visiting chemist from the US, who reported on some studies he’s done in the US looking at the prevalence of lead and other toxic heavy metals in children’s jewelry coming from China and India. Jeff had students in his class “Lead and Society” conduct tests for lead in cheap jewelry being sold in the US and found frightening high levels of lead in many of the pendants in this jewelry, in some cases as high as 100%!
This is astonishing because when the study was started, the legal limit for lead in these pieces was 0.06% because of the known health hazards associated with ingestion of lead (not that jewelry is intended to be consumed, but since children often put lots of things in their mouths, including jewelry, there is a high risk of lead poisoning with jewelry containing high lead content, which came to national prominence after an 8-year-old boy swallowed a pendant on a bracelet distributed by Reebok and died a week later).
Jeff has traced the high lead content in some cases to backyard smelting of old car batteries and discarded computer circuit boards, which is a good source of income for the unemployed in China and India but a source of cheap metal alloys containing very high content of lead (and cadmium, another very toxic metal) that ends up in cheap jewelry that ends up on the shelves in discount stores in the US (and likely Australia, although no one has yet tested such jewelry in Australia for heavy metals).
As a result of what started as a student project, Jeff’s research has resulted in US Congressional investigations into the lead content of jewelry and other items targeted for children in the US, and in major retailers such as Wal Mart instituting policies that prohibit any lead in all children’s jewelry that they sell. Paul thanked Dr Weidenhamer for a very interesting and thought-provoking presentation.

Golf
A golfer is in a competitive match with a friend, who is ahead by a couple of strokes. The golfer says to himself, “I’d give anything to sink this next putt.”
A stranger walks up to him and whispers, “Would you give up a fourth of your sex life?”
The golfer thinks the man is crazy and that his answer will be meaningless but also that perhaps this is a good omen and will put him in the right frame of mind to make the difficult putt and says, “OK.”
And sinks the putt.
Two holes later he mumbles to himself, “Boy, if I could only get an
eagle on this hole.”
The same stranger moves to his side and says, “Would it be worth
another fourth of your sex life?”
The golfer shrugs and says, “Sure.” And he makes an eagle. Down to the final hole. The golfer needs yet another eagle to win. Though he says nothing, the stranger moves to his side and says, “Would you be willing to give up the rest of your sex life to win this match?”
The golfer says, “Certainly.” And makes the eagle.
As the golfer walks to the club house, the stranger walks alongside and says,” You know, I’ve really not been fair with you because you don’t know who I am. I’m the devil and from now on you will have no sex life.”
“Nice to meet you,” says the golfer. “My name’s Father O’Malley.”

The new funding model for The Rotary Foundation was developed because our ability to continue “doing good in the world” depends heavily on the Foundation having long-term financial stability. In the interests of improved communication and understanding of the changes, here are 10 important things to know about the new model, which becomes effective on 1 July 2015.

ROTI is about the first Object of Rotary: the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.
ROTI members are in a special position to develop acquaintances. With members from around 100 countries, friendship and acquaintance has taken on a whole new meaning and concept. ROTI members are in a position to further world understanding in a way none have ever experienced before.
The mission of ROTI is to apply modern information technology to enhance Rotary service, fellowship and knowledge, and to use Internet communications to further world understanding and peace.
Rotary International recommends that every District to have a web site to improve communications between clubs, DGs, DG staff and Rotary International. ROTI members world wide have contributed to this over the past 10 years.
Email has now become the standard means of communication between Rotary International staff and the hundreds of Districts throughout the world. We now use email to establish Projects, Matching Grants, Group Study Exchange planning, and reporting to Rotary International.
At the start of the 21st century, ROTI is conscious of our responsibility to ensure that new technologies are used effectively to help our organization. At the same time, we need to remember the old adage “If if isn’t broken, don’t fix it”.

This week we had our last board meeting for 2013-2014. There was a lot if discussion on the Coolamon Men’s Shed and how we may support them into the future. A committee was formed of John Glassford, Ted Hutcheon, Henk Hulsman and Ian Durham.
The Bradley’s Flight for Life for the Snowy Hydro South Care Helicopter event raised over $45,000 net profit for the weekend. President Dick thanked all those in our club who helped out over the weekend. Our club manned the gate over the two day event.
Junee RC Change Over is to be held on Sunday July 13th in Junee 12 midday at the Junee Ex Services Club. Junee will be attending our change over in numbers and so we need to reciprocate the fellowship and get along to Junee.

President Ron Burton and his wife Jetta Burton say good bye in Sydney.
RI President Ron Burton put the final touches on the 2014 Rotary Convention in Sydney by reminding a packed Allphones Arena why they joined Rotary.
“Being a Rotarian isn’t about our own achievements, it isn’t about our own careers, it really isn’t about us at all. It’s about the people we help,” said Burton. “At the end of the day, the only thing that matters in Rotary is how much better the world becomes because Rotary is in it.”
The four-day event, which drew to a close on 4 June, attracted more than 18,000 attendees from 153 countries. Burton encouraged convention goers to return to their clubs ready to do more to improve the lives of others.
“Together, we can dream big and we can achieve. We can change whole communities for the better, not for a day but for a lifetime,” he said.
Rotary changes lives by improving literacy, making water cleaner, bringing better health care to mothers and children, and eradicating polio worldwide, Burton said. But he warned that complacency could set Rotary back.
“That’s why it isn’t enough for any of us to just go through the motions, to show up at our clubs, to do just the minimum needed and no more,” he added. “And it’s why each of us has to remember, every hour of every day, what a responsibility we have.”
The Mistress
A husband and wife were having dinner at a very fine restaurant when an absolutely stunning young woman comes over to their table, gives the husband a big kiss, tells him she’ll see him later, and walks away. His wife glares at him and says, “Who was that??!!”
“Oh” replies the husband, “that was my mistress.” “That’s it,” says the wife, “I want a divorce.”
“Ok,” replies her husband, “but remember, if you get a divorce there will be no more shopping trips to Paris, no wintering in the Caribbean, no Lexus in the garage, and no more country club. But, the decision is yours.”
Just then the wife notices a mutual friend entering the restaurant with a gorgeous woman.
“Who is that woman with Jim?” she asks.
“That’s his mistress,” replies her husband. “Ours is much better looking.” says the wife.
Great work in Voi. The Rotary Club of Voi is a new club in D 9212 in Kenya and doing good work there. Voi is about half way between Nairobi and Mombasa deep in elephant country.
In a joint venture with the Rotaract Club of JKUAT, the Rotary Club of Voi today donated a wheelchair to Mary Charo a student at St Jude Educational Center. Those present were Ashok Anand, the country works officer, Rtn Robert Mwangala, the Rotaract president Wesley, the president elect, Muchiri among others. Special thanks to Rotaracter Florence who coordinated the event.

As you may be aware a terrorist attack in Kenya last Sunday killed 48 innocent Kenyans by Al Shabab from Somalia. The link between Al Shabab and the blood ivory trade is well known and this is how they get the latest weapons no match for the Kenyan Police on the front line.
Last week we lost another Giant Tusker this time Satoa from Tsavo East which borders on the Somalia border.
One of the largest elephants in the world. The loss of great Satao. These photos were taken in Tsavo East NP in April 2014 during one of our research days inside the park. He was such an incredible elephant to be close to, you really can’t imagine the thickness of his tusks, the sense of weight hanging off his head and the grandeur of his presence. Appalling to think some small sub-human decided to kill this magnificent elephant of all elephants for his own greed. Undeniably, one of the greatest tuskers in the whole of Africa has been lost. Everyone needs to do something to help now.

We were invited by the Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga to a dinner in Wagga Wagga with the Rotary Club of Chandigarh from District 3080 in India.
Our club has a connection with Chandigarh with President Elect Garth Perkin and Marg Perkin having been to Chandigarh. Marg and Garth went to Chandigarh with the RC of Wagga Wagga led by Dr. Alok Sharma. The project called Darkness to Light,a great project restoring eyesight in India.

A great time with wonderful like minded people from around the world. The train rides from Central to Olympic City were fun and everyone was in a great mood. Our booth # 229 attracted a lot of interest and Rotarains wanting to join us in Kenya on 2015. Here is a pictorial of some of the high lights too many things happened to compile a full report:
A total of 340 Rotarians waving 278 flags climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge to break two world records. But the biggest win of all was the money — and awareness — raised to help end polio.

PDG Fred Loneragan and I looked after our booth # 229 for the 5 days plus one day setting up prior to the Convention. The above photos are a small representation of what went on in Sydney. Visitors to our booth a plenty including PRIP Bill Boyd and Lorna Boyd from New Zealand. PRIP Bill is the Patron for the Mount Kenya 2015 Climb.
We had help from many members of D9700 including DG Geoff Tancred and Bettye Tancred. Wagga Wagga Sunrise members with President Peter Gissing also helped on the booth. PDG Barbara Shayeb-Helou, a RAGES board member, also did a lot of work for us and promoted our climb and RAGES to all and sundry Barbara is from South Carolina.
Susan and I went to Vivid Sydney like many delegates and enjoyed the amazing light show Sydney put on.
We did not have much time to attend any plenary sessions however we made the opening and closing plenaries. Coolamon had two members present in Sydney Garth Perkin and myself, thanks to Garth for the help during the Convention. Thanks also to Susan for all the work in setting up and taking down the booth and to all those who helped us. The 10 tenors and Marina Prior were outstanding at the closing ceremony as was the speech by incoming Rotary World President Gary Huang.

In English, you say, “It is better to light a single candle, than to sit and curse the darkness.” That sums up everything that we think in Rotary. There are so many problems in the world, so many people who need help.
And many people say, “There’s nothing I can do.” They sit there. Do nothing. Everything stays dark. But this is not the Rotary way. The Rotary way is the Confucius way. The Rotary way is to light a candle. I light one. You light one. 1.2 million people all light one.
Together, we can light up the world.”
We manned the gate for Brad’s FLIGHT For Life at the Coolamon Showground on Saturday and Sunday this Queen’s Birthday long weekend. here are a few photos of the event a full report will be available next week.

In Seven Days
In the beginning God created day and night. He created day for footy matches, going to the beach and barbies. He created night for going prawning, sleeping and barbies. God saw that it was good.
Evening came and morning came and it was the second Day.
On the Second Day God created water – for surfing, swimming and barbies on the beach. God saw that it was good. Evening came and morning came and it was the Third Day.
On the Third Day God created the Earth to bring forth plants – to provide tobacco, malt and yeast for beer and wood for barbies. God saw that it was good. Evening came and morning came and it was the Fourth Day.
On the Fourth Day God created animals and crustaceans for chops, sausages, steak and prawns for barbies. God saw that it was good. Evening came and morning came and it was the Fifth Day.
On the Fifth day God created a bloke – to go to the footy, enjoy the beach, drink the beer and eat the meat and prawns at barbies. God saw that it was good. Evening came and morning came and it was the Sixth Day.
On the Sixth Day God saw that this bloke was lonely and needed someone to go to the footy, surf, drink beer, eat and stand around the barbie with. So God created Mates, and God saw that they were good blokes. God saw that it was good. Evening came and morning came and it was the Seventh Day.
On the Seventh Day God looked around at the twinkling barbie fires, heard the hiss of opening beer cans and the raucous laughter of all the Blokes, smelled the aroma of grilled chops and sizzling prawns and God saw that it was good. well almost good. God saw that the blokes were tired and needed a rest.
So God created Sheilas – to clean the house, bear children, wash, cook and clean the barbie. God saw that it was not just good, it was better than that, it was bloody great! IT WAS AUSTRALIA !!

Rotary Scholar Kelsi Lopatecki Cox is a prime example of what can happen when you nurture young people. During her speech to the convention audience, she championed innovative technology and education as a way to address poverty and under-development in rural communities. She is program coordinator for the Digital Learning Room, a project that brings technology to schools in the South Pacific.
“The challenges faced by our world are great, and they won’t go away overnight,” said Cox. “By supporting education, by embracing technology, by daring to think outside of the box, we can address poverty and inequality. But we can’t do it alone; when we join together, we are stronger. Together, we can create a world of opportunity.”

Thumbs up who’s coming to the Convention!
We were low on numbers tonight due to the flu and members being away. However we had two guests Susan Glassford and Helen Lewis. Garth Perkin brought along Anne Frizell as our guest speaker tonight. Anne is studying at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga for her Bachelor of Education and wants to specialise in teaching agriculture.
Anne gave a very interesting talk which was well received by everyone. In his vote of thanks Neil Munro said that Australia is in good stead with young inspiring and hard working women such as Anne. Anne comes from the land from Armidale and has two sisters, loves farming and is passionate about teaching. Anne was introduced to Rotary by her school bus driver in Armidale and we are convinced that Anne will make a very good Rotarian when she graduates. Well done Anne.

President Dick Jennings reminded all members that next weekend we are required to man the gates for Brad’s Flight for Life at the Coolamon Showgrounds. Volunteers are required so please get your names on the roster. Ted Hutcheon reported on the Salvos fund raising in Coolamon which yielded $1166, we will be at the footy next weekend in Ganmain and Coolamon collecting at the gates.
Our club congratulates Tony Donohue in being promoted to the position of General Manager at the Coolamon Shire council.

Rotary International President Ron Burton visited Interact students in New Mexico, USA, at the Rotary Club of Santa Fe’s 90th anniversary dinner. Prior to the dinner, the youth leaders interviewed President Burton for 30 minutes.

The Barber
A guy sticks his head in the barber shop and asks, “How long before I can et a haircut?” The barber looks around the shop and says, “About two hours.” The guy leaves.
A few days later, the same guy sticks his head in the door and asks, “How long before I get a haircut?” The barber looks around the shop full of customers and says, “About two hours.” The guy leaves.
A week later, the same guy sticks his head in the shop and asks, “How long before I can get a haircut?” The barber looks around the shop an says, “About an hour and half.” The guy leaves.
The barber looks over at a friend in the shop and says, “Hey Bill, follow that guy and see where he goes.” In a little while, Bill comes back into the shop laughing hysterically. The barber asks, “Bill, where did he go when he left here?” Bill looked up and said,

The Water and Sanitation Rotarian Action Group is looking forward to our sixth World Water Summit, a one-day water, sanitation, and hygiene education (WASH) conference on May 30th in Sydney, the day before the International Convention begins. Participants will learn the latest from world experts, experienced Rotarians, and potential supporters about how to design, implement and monitor effective WASH programs.

I hope you are fine. I am doing fine on my end. My aim for this letter is to thank you for the scholarship that you gave me. I was extremely happy. I am now able to continue with my studies.I know that education is the key to success. I am going to work hard and make you proud of sponsoring me. We have done an exam and the results will be coming along with this letter.
God bless you for everything. I hope one day I will be able to meet you and thank you personally. As you know I study at Bahati Girls one of the best schools in the country. I am happy there because it is a conducive place for learning. As I end the letter I would like to tell you I am opening on the seventh day of May and my school fees is eighteen thousand.

We had a lively and informative meeting with 13 members present and one guest Susan Glassford.
The raffle prize was a bucket of three fish caught by our intrepid anglers recently.
President Dick reminded members that the Red Shield Appeal is on this upcoming weekend. Ted Hutcheon spoke at length on the conduct of the fund raising for the Salvos and how best to obtain the best result from our efforts.

Grounds for Divorce
A judge was interviewing a woman regarding her pending divorce and asks, “What are the grounds for your divorce?”
She replied, “About four acres and a nice little home in the middle of the property.”
“I mean,” he continued, “What are your relations like?”
“I have an aunt and uncle living here in town, and so do my husband’s parents.”
He said, “Do you have a real grudge?”
“No,” she replied, “We have a two-car carport and have never really needed one.”
“Please,” he tried again, “is there any infidelity in your marriage?”
“Yes, both my son and daughter have stereo sets. We don’t necessarily like the music, but the answer to your question is ‘yes’.”
“Ma’am, does your husband ever beat you up?”
“Yes,” she responded, “most days he gets up earlier than I do.”
Finally, in frustration, the judge asked, “Lady, why do you want a divorce?”
“Oh, I don’t want a divorce,” she replied. “I never wanted a divorce. It’s husband. He says he can’t communicate with me.”

Elsewhere in the kitchen, other cooks and Rotary spouses are preparing meatballs, slicing and peeling eggplants, and measuring out cookie dough. At a table in an adjacent dining area, a man is reading a recipe from a Braille cookbook.
The cookbook, “Good Smells From the Kitchen,” has enabled many members of the Library of Turkey for the Visually Disabled to enter the kitchen with new confidence.

Another elephant tragedy in Kenya. This is what we are fighting against with RAGES.
We are devastated to report that Mountain Bull has been found dead, having been speared on the slopes of Mount Kenya.
Mountain Bull was a magnificent elephant who achieved notoriety for his fence-breaking habit, but who helped make the Laikipia Elephant Corridor famous when he (eventually) learnt to use this path between his mountain hideaway and the ladies of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.
The Elephant Crisis Fund is moving fast to counter this appalling waste of beauty and life. Losing Mountain Bull spurs us to redouble our efforts.
