ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

Tickle Me Elmo:

There is a factory in Northern Minnesota which makes the Tickle Me Elmo toys. The toy laughs when you tickle it under the arms. Well, Lena is hired at The Tickle Me Elmo factory and she reports for her first day promptly at 8:00 AM.

The next day at 8:45 AM there is a knock at the Personnel Manager’s door. The Foreman throws open the door and begins to rant about the new employee. He complains that she is incredibly slow and the whole line is backing up, putting the entire production line behind schedule.

The Personnel Manager decides he should see this for himself, so the 2 men march down to the factory floor. When they get there the line is so backed up that there are Tickle Me Elmo’s all over the factory floor and they’re really beginning to pile up. At the end of the line stands Lena surrounded by mountains of Tickle Me Elmo’s.

She has a roll of plush red fabric and a huge bag of small marbles. The 2 men watch in amazement as she cuts a little piece of fabric, wraps it around two marbles and begins to carefully sew the little package between Elmo’s legs.

The Personnel Manager bursts into laughter. After several minutes of hysterics he pulls himself together and approaches Lena. “I’m sorry,” he says to her, barely able to keep a straight face, “but I think you misunderstood the instructions I gave you yesterday…”

“Your job is to give Elmo two test tickles.”

Visit to the Doctor.

A woman accompanied her husband to the doctor’s office.

After his checkup, the doctor called the wife into his office alone.

He said, “Your husband is suffering from a very severe stress disorder.

If you don’t do the following, your husband will surely die.”

“Each morning, fix him a healthy breakfast. Be pleasant at all times.

For lunch make him a nutritious meal.

For dinner prepare an especially nice meal for him. Don’t burden him with chores.

Don’t discuss your problems with him, it will only make his stress worse. No nagging. And most importantly, make love with your husband several times a week.

If you can do this for the next 10 months to a year, I think your husband will regain his health completely.”

On the way home, the husband asked his wife. “What did the doctor say?”

“He said you’re going to die!”

ROTARY RECEIVES $1.85 MILLION FROM SAN DIEGO BUSINESS LEADER

EVANSTON, Ill. (Jan. 15, 2014) — San Diego businessman and Rotary club member Terrence Caster and his wife Barbara have donated $1.85 million to Rotary in support of the humanitarian service group’s polio eradicationand peace studies programs.

“Barbara and I are blessed to be fruitful in our family business A-1 Self Storage, and we’ve always felt it is important to give back and help others,” said Caster, the company’s founder and a member of the Rotary Club of La Mesa. “As a result, we are involved in numerous charities. But as a Rotarian, I can think of no cause more worthy than Rotary’s work to end polio and promote world peace.”

The donation, announced during an annual conference of Rotary leaders in San Diego, is among the largest single gifts ever made to the organization by an individual Rotary club member.

GLOBAL GRANT PROGRESS

David Hastie RC of Nairobi and James Kabau of the KTTC sign the MoU in Nairobi last week.

The saga continues with our global grant for the children of Mathare in Nairobi.  We are now in partnership with the Rotary Club of Nairobi and President David Hastie.  The application is now ready for signing off and lodging to the Rotary Foundation following the signing of a memorandum of agreement between Rotary Nairobi and the Kenya Technical Teachers College.

This means that the $25,000, one third of the Kilimanjaro 2007 Climb will now be matched by the Rotary Foundation with a sum of $20,000 bringing the total to $45,000 aprox.  This depends on the Foundation being happy with the application and give their approval.  It has been a complex and frustrating journey but we are close to a final outcome.

Update on ShelterBoxes to The Philippines

‘This tent is our home’

‘We are so happy with the ShelterBox tent because when we came out of the midwife’s house we didn’t have a house anymore to go back to,’ explained Hazel. ‘Now this tent is our home.’
The interior is immaculate. The family have built a beautiful wooden bench for the tent, hung curtains to give Hazel some privacy while she is breastfeeding Yole, set up a neatly organised pantry for their food as well as a dresser with decorations and family momentos. Shoes are never allowed inside and the kids know they are not allowed to play in the tents. Many other families on the island follow suit and beautify their tents into real homes knowing that it may take some time to rebuild their houses again.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT RON BURTON:

We often talk about Rotary as an extended family, with all of its branches and generations. We value our youth program participants and alumni as important members of the Rotary family, and we place a special emphasis on service to children and families. We do this because we know that for any family, the youngest generation is the future. That is absolutely true for us in Rotary.

We know that it is essential for us to bring in a new generation of younger Rotary members. We’ve spent a lot of time talking about how to attract young professionals to Rotary – but perhaps we haven’t talked enough about why they don’t stay.

The Young Doctor

A young doctor had moved out to a small community to replace a doctor who was retiring.

The older gent suggested the young one accompany him on his rounds so the community could become used to a new doctor.

At the first house a woman complained, “I’ve been a little sick to my stomach.”

The older doctor said, “Well, you’ve probably been overdoing the fresh fruit. Why not cut back on the amount you’ve been eating and see if that does the trick?”

As they left the younger man said, “You didn’t even examine that woman. How’d you come to your diagnosis so quickly?”

“I didn’t have to. You noticed I dropped my stethoscope on the floor in there? When I bent over to pick it up, I noticed a half dozen banana peels in the trash. That was what was probably making her sick.”

“Huh,” the younger doctor said, “Pretty sneaky. I think I’ll try that at the next house.”

Arriving at the next house, they spent several minutes talking with an elderly woman.

She complained that she just didn’t have the energy she once did. “I’m feeling terribly run down lately.”

“You’ve probably been doing too much work for the church,” the younger doctor told her. “Perhaps you should cut back a bit and see if that helps.”

As they left, the elder doc said, “Your diagnosis is almost certainly correct, but how did you arrive at it?” “Well, just like you at the last house, I dropped my stethoscope. When I bent down to retrieve it, I noticed the preacher under the bed.”

New Rotary Theme 2014-2015

RI President-elect Gary C.K. Huang chose Light Up Rotary as his theme for 2014-15. Huang was inspired by the teachings of Chinese philosopher Confucious who said: “It is better to light a single candle, than to sit and curse the darkness.”
“There are so many problems in the world, so many people who need help. Many people say, ‘There’s nothing I can do.’ So they sit there doing nothing. Meanwhile everything stays dark,” Huang told the 537 district governors and their spouses and partners who are attending the 2014 International Assembly in San Diego, California.
“The Rotary way is the Confucius way. The Rotary way is to light a candle. I light one, you light one, 1.2 million Rotarians light one. Together, we light up the world,” said Huang, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Taipei in Taiwan.
After announcing his theme at the opening session of the five-day training meeting, Huang urged club members to Light Up Rotary in the coming year by hosting a Rotary Day in their community and including local Rotaract and Interact members in their service projects.
“How you Light Up Rotary is up to you,” Huang said. “You know where you are strong, you know what your community needs, and you know how you can help.”

Coolamon Rotary News Bulletin #24

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR READERS.

President Dick Jennings and all our members wish all of our friends who read our bulletin a great year ahead for yourselves, your family and our Rotary Family.  Happy New Year!

JANUARY IS ROTARY ROTARY AWARENESS MONTH.

Most of us who read this bulletin are Rotarians or connected to Rotary and we are well aware of what Rotary means to us and what work we do locally and internationally.  One way to create awareness of Rotary is to let our extended family and friends know about Rotary.  One area that does attract people to volunteer is the ability to work overseas with an organisation such as Rotary.

Let everyone know about the very recent help that Rotary via ShleterBox is doing right now in The Philippines after the typhoon.  In order for you to do that you need to know what has been done via ShleterBox and here is the latest news from ShelterBox:

ShelterBox Reponse Team members Alice Jefferson (left-centre) and Ayeasia Macintyre (right) among Australian Naval staff. Photo courtesy of the Australian Navy.

Australian Forces have been providing logistical support for ShelterBox in the Philippines, as the international disaster relief charity continues to bring emergency shelter and other vital aid to Typhoon Haiyan survivors in hard to reach areas of the Asian country.

The Australian Navy’s HMAS Tobruk transported over 300 ShelterBox disaster relief tents, vital water purification devices and mosquito nets to North Cebu, Central Visayas, helping ShelterBox continue to support those suffering most after the typhoon.

Listen to the Sound of Silence

There once was a farmer who discovered that he had lost his watch in the barn. It was no ordinary watch because it had sentimental value for him.

After searching high and low among the hay for a long while; he gave up and enlisted the help of a group of children playing outside the barn.

He promised them that the person who found it would be rewarded.

Hearing this, the children hurried inside the barn, went through and around the entire stack of hay but still could not find the watch.

Just when the farmer was about to give up looking for his watch, a little boy went up to him and asked to be given another chance. The farmer looked at him and thought, “Why not? After all, this kid looks sincere enough.”

So the farmer sent the little boy back in the barn. After a while the little boy came out with the watch in his hand! The farmer was both happy and surprised and so he asked the boy how he succeeded where the rest had failed.

The boy replied, “I did nothing but sit on the ground and listen. In the silence, I heard the ticking of the watch and just looked for it in that direction.”

Moral :

A peaceful mind can think better than a worked up mind. Allow a few minutes of silence to your mind every day, and see, how sharply it helps you to set your life the way you expect it to be!

The soul always knows what to do to heal itself.. The challenge is to silence the mind…

A DANGEROUS IDEA OFFERS HOPE FOR GIRLS IN AFGHANISTAN

More than 400 girls, including these seven-year-old best friends, attend the Zabuli Education Center outside Kabul. Razia Jan (far right), a U.S. Rotarian who returned to her native Afghanistan, opened the school in 2008.

In 2005, Razia Jan came up with a dangerous idea: to start a free private school for girls in her native Afghanistan. The Taliban were using extreme violence to keep girls from learning. In 2008, the year she opened the school, terrorists in the country — armed with bombs, poison gas, guns, grenades, and acid — killed 149 teachers, students, and employees in Afghan schools.

But Jan did not intend to let terrorists stop her. She approached Afghan Ministry of Education officials and persuaded them to donate a piece of land in a village 30 miles outside Kabul. Today, the Zabuli Education Center is in its sixth year and has a roster of more than 400 girls in kindergarten through ninth grade………………

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT RON BURTON:

Nelson Mandela’s legacy of courage, determination, and commitment will forever inspire us to move forward in our effort to achieve a better, more peaceful world.

Mr. Mandela shared Rotary’s commitment to humanitarian service and world peace, and twice as President of South Africa accepted Rotary recognition for his commitment to helping those in need, especially the children of southern Africa. In 1995, President Mandela received the Rotary International Award of Honor. Two years later, he accepted Rotary’s highest award, the Rotary Award for World Understanding. In true fashion, he donated the $100,000 grant accompanying the award to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.

Rotary is especially grateful for his strong support of the global effort to eradicate the crippling disease polio, our organizaton’s highest priority. Mr. Mandela himself helped administer oral polio vaccine to the children of South Africa, which has been declared polio-free.

RI President Ron Burton.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

The Devil

One Sunday morning, Satan appeared before a small town congregation. Everyone started screaming and running for the front church door, trampling each other in a frantic effort to get away.

Soon, everyone was gone, except for an elderly gentleman who sat calmly. Satan walked up to the man and said, “Don’t you know who I am?”

The man replied, “Yep, sure do.”

Satan asked, “Aren’t you going to run?”

“Nope, sure ain’t,” said the man.

Perturbed, Satan asked, “Why aren’t you afraid of me?”

The man calmly replied, “Been married to your sister for over 48 years.”

THE LIVES OF MOTHERS

Mothers pose for a picture with their children, who were given the oral polio vaccine, during National Immunization Days in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.  {Photo Credit: Photo by Alyce Henson/Rotary International}

Mothers play a fundamental role in every culture. But depending on where a mother and baby live, they have a different chance of living or dying, suffering or thriving. In sub-Saharan Africa, one in 39 women will die of pregnancy-related complications, and one in nine children will die before age five. (In developed countries, the likelihood of dying drops to one in 4,700 women and one in 167 children.) Globally, 19,000 children die every day. The Rotary Foundation is working to improve maternal and child health around the world.

NOVEMBER IS ROTARY FAMILY MONTH.

WHAT IS ROTARACT?

Rotaract is a club for adults ages 18-30 that meets twice a month to exchange ideas, plan activities and projects, and socialize. While Rotary clubs serve as sponsors, Rotaract clubs decide how to organize and run their club and what projects and activities to carry out.

Well done to the Rotaract Club of Abakaliki, Nigeria, who held a number of activities in March educating mothers and villagers about health practices that can prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Last Drink

There was this guy at a bar, just looking at his drink. He stays like that for half of an hour.

Then, this big trouble-making truck driver steps next to him, takes the drink from the guy, and just drinks it all down. The poor man starts crying. The truck driver says, “Come on man,

I was just joking. Here, I’ll buy you another drink. I just can’t stand to see a man cry.”

“No, it’s not that. This day is the worst of my life. First, I fall asleep, and I go late

to my office. My boss, outrageous, fires me. When I leave the building, to my car,

I found out it was stolen. The police said that they can do nothing. I get a cab to return home, and when I leave it, I remember I left my wallet and credit cards there. The cab driver just drives away.”

“I go home, and when I get there, I find my wife in bed with the gardener. I leave home, and come to this bar. And just when I was thinking about putting an end to my life, you show up and drink my poison.”

Blonde Bridge

A blonde and a redhead were watching the 6:00 news when a story came up about a man who was threatening to jump off the Brooklyn Bridge. The blonde bet the redhead that the man wouldn’t jump off the bridge and the readhead accepted.

Well, sure enough, the man jumped and so the blonde gave the redhead the 50 bucks. “I can’t take this, you’re my best friend.”

The blonde looked at her, “Just take it.”

“Well, I saw this on the 5;00 news, so I knew he was gonna jump off.”

The blonde laughed, “I did too, but I didn’t think he’d do it again.

WORLD AIDS DAY DECEMBER 1st.

Marion Bunch and PRIP  Jonathan Babatunde Majiyagbe and family in Bangkok 2012

The Board of Directors of Rotarians For Family Health & AIDS Prevention wants to honor all of those victims that died of AIDS over the past 30 years by saying that Rotarians are fully engaged in the fight against AIDS! We want to make a difference in the elimination of the HIV virus, and we are doing so through programs such as our ‘Rotary Family Health Days’ in Africa. Through this health event that occurs in multiple countries in Africa each year, we are testing and counseling hundreds of thousands of hard to reach citizens. We perform the program in the communities where the people live, and they come to this event because they trust the Rotary brand. We are working in a unique public/private partnership’ program that includes in-country governments, the U. S. government (CDC and USAID), and The Coca-Cola Company to provide massive free health care to the disadvantaged. For more information, please go to our website at www.rfha.org.

CAUSES WORTH SUPPORTING

THE ORPHAN RESCUE KIT

  • Have you ever been touched by an orphan?
  • Have you ever been in a slum where all semblance of humanity is all but gone?
  • Have you seen the devastation of AIDS on the most innocent of human beings?

Well 16 us Aussies went to Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa in August 2007 and we witnessed all of the above. We went to climb Africa’s highest mountain and to climb for 11 million reasons. That is the number of orphans now trying to survive in Sub-Saharan Africa. We visited the Mathare slums in Nairobi a place I remembered as a young man as the vegetable gardens of Nairobi City; it has become the “home” to 600,000 Kenyans with NO running water, NO toilets and NO hope. There are thousands of children here of which many are orphans. It is here that we will “build” the first O.R.K.s. here Hope World Wide and RFHA {Rotarians For Family Health & AIDS Prevention} will reach out to rescue the orphans of Mathare.

Hence the Orphan Rescue Kit. The O.R.K. is made up of the basic items that a child needs to survive and get ahead in life. The O.R.K. that you buy will be made up in the country where it is needed as in the case of Nairobi the materials will be sourced locally thus giving the people there a way to make a living from creating these Orphan Rescue Kits. So not only will you be saving an orphan you will be creating employment where it is needed most.

The money that we raise in this campaign will go directly to RFHA in the country where RFHA and Hope World Wide are working in partnership to rescue orphans and children that are at risk and vulnerable the ANCHOR Project. So your investment in a child’s life is well secured and you can be assured that 100% of the funds raised will go to where it is needed so desperately these days.

The photograph below shows what appalling conditions these children at risk live in.  In effect the playground is a rubbish tip.

Coolamon Rotary News Bulletin #21

NOVEMBER IS THE ROTARY FOUNDATION MONTH.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION

The Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. As the charitable arm of Rotary, we tap into a global network of Rotarians who invest their time, money, and expertise into our priorities, such as eradicating polio and promoting peace. Foundation grants empower Rotarians to approach challenges such as poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition with sustainable solutions that leave a lasting impact.

Strong financial oversight, a stellar charity rating, and a unique funding model mean that we make the very most of your contribution. Give and become a part of Rotary’s life-changing work!

MONDAY MEETING 25th November 2013

Last weekend our club deployed a ShelterBox to Coolamon and Ganmain and so far we have raised enough to support 3 ShelterBoxes for the Philippines, including one donated by a local farmer.  Here  are some photos from the two deployments:

Welcome back Garth Perkin from his and Marg’s trip to India with Alok Sharma and the Darkness to Light project and we had 11 members attend last night’s meeting which was held in two parts:

1.  SHELTERBOX

Grahame Miles and Ian Jennings reported on the day in Coolamon.  Our thanks go to Henk Hulsman, Ian Jennings, Ian Durham and Grahame Miles for the sterling effort that was put in over last Friday where the two Ians did a 10 hour shift.

Miffy Collette and Bernadette Milne reported on the Ganmain effort which was on the Saturday.  Miffy said it was a pleasure to be able to promote Rotary in Ganmain with the ShelterBox and it made a huge difference to  the people of Ganmain who could see what the money was required for.  Our thanks go to Miffy, Bernadette, Paul Weston and Leslie Weston for supporting the cause.

Miffy and Bernadette in Ganmain on Saturday.

Coolamon raised around $1,500 and Ganmain $1,000, not that there is any competition between the two villages!  It was noted that this type of cooperation between the two villages was excellent for promoting Rotary in the Coolamon Shire.

It was the general feeling of the meeting that we recommend to the board that our club matches  the donations from the community and that in all we should send 5 ShelterBoxes to The Philippines.

2.  MEMBERSHIP THINK TANK

The second half of our meeting was devoted to a think tank on membership which was led by Grahame Miles our membership Director ably assisted by Leslie Weston. Grahame outlined the benefits of being in Rotary and serving the local and wider community that we live in.

Many ideas were discussed and we decided to continue with these think tanks next year, the bottom line seems to be that people will join Rotary if they can contribute in some way that makes them feel good.  Top of the list was friendship and fellowship.  We will also be looking at ways to make it more affordable for all of our members, and we will need to come up with a new format for our meetings in the future.

P.S.  HOUT BAY

We received this email from PP Butch Liebenberg in Hout Bay on the completion of our Matching Grant with our Rotary Foundation to help build the Clinic known as Coolamon House in Hout Bay, a total of Rand 500,000 which included Rand 127,000 from the Rotary Foundation:

“Hi John,

Wonderful to hear from Patrick of Medical Hope Fame that he has presented his final account on completion of Coolamon Clinic to the powers that be. This project started with your phone call to me at some ungodly hour on a Sunday Morning probably in 2006. I think it was 5 am, and from there it is history. You and your team have done  amazing work to help us establish a very functional and well equipped Clinic for the 40,000 people living in our informal settlement in Hout Bay, known as Imizamo Yethu. Wonderful stuff  John, your club should be very proud of its achievement.  Coolamon Clinic is a landmark known to all here in Cape Town.  Sister Carolis who was the sister in charge at the Clinic until about 9 months ago, said to me it was the most functional Clinic in Cape Town and an absolute pleasure to work in an  environment where all is functional.

I sometimes think there was some divine intervention after taking that early morning call from you ,you said you had tried phoning 3 club presidents before phoning me that morning 6 years ago and none had answered the phone (not surprising at 5am).  Hey John, my phone is on 24 hours a day, you can still phone me anytime, day or night , no problem for me.

It has been wonderful working with you. Please pass on my personal greetings to all the stars that climbed Mount Kili on our behalf. They are all welcome back to stay with Lyn and I in Hout Bay at any time.

Lots of Love to Susan and Yourself from us both in Hout Bay

Butch and Lyn”

PPS This is why I joined Rotary.

Blowing

A blonde was driving home after a game and got caught in a really bad hailstorm. Her car was covered with dents, so the next day she took it to a repair shop. The shop owner saw that she was a blonde, so he decided to have some fun. He told her to go home and blow into the tail pipe really hard and all the dents would pop out.

So, the blonde went home, got down on her hands and knees and started blowing into her tailpipe. Nothing happened. So she blew a little harder, and still nothing happened.

Her blonde roommate saw her and asked, ‘What are you doing?’ The first blonde told her how the repairman had instructed her to blow into the tail pipe in order to get all the dents to pop out.

The roommate rolled her eyes and said, ‘Uh, like hello!

You need to roll up the windows first.’

Buttocks clenched, he performs a slow pirouette, and gently slides off first the right strap of his overalls, followed by the left. He then hunches his shoulders forward and in a classic striptease move, lets his overalls fall down to his hips, revealing a torn and frayed plaid shirt.

Then, grabbing both sides of his shirt, he rips it apart to reveal his stained T-shirt underneath. With a final flourish, he tears the T-shirt from his body, and hurls his baseball cap onto a pile of hay.

Having seen enough, Cletus rushes in and says, “What the heck are you doing, Billy Bob?”

“Jeez, Cletus, ya scared the bejeezers out of me,” says an obviously embarrassed Billy Bob. “But me’n the Ol’ Lady been havin’ trouble lately in the bedroom d’partment, and the therapist suggested I do ‘something sexy to a tractor’.”

ROTARY INFORMATION

Rotary members in the Philippines pack relief goods for victims of Super Typhoon Haiyan. Hundreds of Rotary clubs around the world are also coordinating emergency aid packages for hard-hit communities.

Rotary clubs around the world are pledging emergency aid to communities in central Philippines after last week’s massive typhoon flattened entire coastal towns and villages, killed thousands of people, and displaced nearly 600,000 more.

The situation remains dire as widespread destruction has made food, water, and medicine scarce in remote areas affected by Typhoon Haiyan, the strongest storm to make landfall on record.

Rotary President Ron Burton is urging our 34,000 clubs worldwide to continue to assist storm victims.

“I know we all want to help. I am urging our clubs to take action to provide emergency aid now and begin planning for the future when we can help rebuild homes, schools, and businesses,” says Burton. “We are in the business of helping people in need.”

Rotary partner ShelterBox has committed aid for 4,000 families in the form of emergency shelter and other relief assistance.

Such disasters are “exactly why we entered into our partnership with ShelterBox,” says Burton. “It gives Rotary members worldwide the opportunity to respond immediately and in a very meaningful way to the life-threatening conditions faced by the people of the Philippines.”

For nearly 100 years, Rotary clubs in the Philippines have been creating positive change in their communities. The first Philippine Rotary club was formed in Manila in 1919. Today, more than 800 Rotary clubs throughout the Philippines give members the chance to make a difference at home and around the globe.

Rotary’s work to eradicate polio, our top priority, began in the Philippines. In 1979, Rotary funded the immunization of six million children with the oral polio vaccine. Based largely on the success there, the World Health Assembly authorized the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in which Rotary is a spearheading partner.

Rotary clubs in the Philippines have improved water and sanitation, led medical and dental missions, created literacy programs, and participated in reforestation plantings. When a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck central Philippines in September, clubs were there to bring aid to those in need.

“Rotary members often are both first-responders and rebuilders when major disasters strike because clubs are present in every corner of the world,” Burton says. “We continue with recovery efforts long after international relief agencies have gone because Rotary clubs are part of the communities we serve.”

CAUSES WORTH SUPPORTING

END POLIO

Rtn. Jon Deisher from Alaska in India on a NID trip to immunize Indian children.

Rotary, along with our partners, has reduced polio cases by 99 percent worldwide since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. We are close to eradicating polio, but we need your help. Whether you have a few minutes or a few hours, here are some ways to make a global impact and protect children against polio forever.

Rotarians have helped immunize more than 2 billion children against polio in 122 countries. For as little as $0.60, a child can be protected against this crippling disease for life.

You can maximize support for polio eradication within your club and your community by organizing a fundraiser.
