Monday 16th September Meeting

On Monday Night the 16th September we have Dr. Paul Weston BSc (Cornell), MSc (MichStateUni), PhD (MichStateUni) as our guest speaker.

Paul will be talking about his time in the USA prior to migrating to Australia.

After obtaining a BSc degree in Biology from Cornell University, Dr. Weston completed an MS degree in Systems Science followed by a PhD in Entomology at Michigan State University.  He has studied the behaviour and ecology of insect pests in a variety of cropping systems (vegetables, woody ornamentals, and stored grains), focusing on the chemical basis for insect/plant interactions, host selection behaviour, and degree-day models of development.  In addition to basic aspects of biology, Dr. Weston has investigated alternative pest control methods using behavioural modifying chemicals, reduced-risk products, and biological control.  More recently, he has been studying the impact of climate change on insect biology and biological control of weeds by insects.

Dr. Weston arrived at CSU in 2008 after establishing recognised research programs at Kentucky State University and Cornell University.  He lectures into a variety of subjects including Introductory Biology, Invertebrate Pest Management, and Vine Health.  His research program is currently focused on biological control of weeds with insects.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

$Million Question

A contestant Sally, on ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire?’ had reached the final plateau. If she answered the next question correctly, she would win $1,000,000. If she answered incorrectly, she would pocket only the $25,000 milestone money.

And as she suspected it would be, the million-dollar question was no pushover. It was, ‘Which of the following species of birds does not build its own nest but instead lays its eggs in the nests of other birds? Is it:

A ) the condor

B ) the buzzard

C ) the cuckoo

D ) the vulture

The woman was on the spot. She did not know the answer. She had used up her 50/50 Lifeline and her Ask the Audience Lifeline. All that remained was her Phone-a-Friend Lifeline. She hoped she would not have to use it because her friend was, well, blonde. But she had no alternative.

She called her friend and gave her the question and the four choices.

The blonde responded unhesitatingly, ‘that’s easy. The answer is C: the cuckoo.’

The contestant had to make a decision and make it fast. She considered employing a reverse strategy and giving Meredith any answer except the one that her friend had given her. And considering her friend was a blonde that would seem to be the logical thing to do. But her friend had responded with such confidence, such certitude, that the contestant could not help but be convinced.

‘I need an answer,’ said Meredith.

Crossing her fingers, the contestant said, ‘C: The cuckoo.’

‘Is that your final answer?’

‘Yes, that is my final answer.’

And Meredith replied, ‘that answer is…. Absolutely correct! You are now a millionaire!’

Three days later, the contestant hosted a party for her family and friends, including the blonde who had helped her win the million dollars.

‘Joni, I just do not know how to thank you,’ said the contestant. ‘How did you happen to know the right answer?’

‘Oh, come on,’ said the blonde. ‘Everybody knows that cuckoos don’t build nests. They live in clocks.’

ROTARY INFORMATION

ROTARY APPROVES $500,000 EMERGENCY GRANT FOR SOMALIA

Rotary has approved a $500,000 Rapid Response grant to the World Health Organization (WHO) to address a recent polio outbreak in Somalia. The outbreak occurred in the Banadir region of Somalia, where a large number of children had not been vaccinated against polio due to inaccessibility.

As of 14 August, 110 cases of wild poliovirus have been reported in the Horn of Africa—100 cases in Somalia and 10 in Kenya. This is the first outbreak in Somalia since 2007 and in Kenya since 2011.

The Rotary grant will cover operational costs, including human resources, training, and transportation of health workers, aimed at immunizing children under 10 in all accessible areas of Somalia in August.

To date, five vaccination campaigns have been held in Somalia, three in Kenya, two each in Ethiopia and Yemen, and one in Djibouti.  Additional campaigns are planned through the end of the year.

SAVE THE PANGOLIN

JOIN RAGES.

Pangolins, often called “scaly anteaters,” are covered in tough, overlapping scales. These burrowing mammals eat ants and termites using an extraordinarily long, sticky tongue, and are able to quickly roll themselves up into a tight ball when threatened. Eight different pangolin species can be found across Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Poaching for illegal wildlife trade and habitat loss have made these incredible creatures one of the most endangered groups of mammals in the world.

Pangolins are highly prized targets for wildlife traffickers in Asia. As the only mammals with scales, pangolins are thought to contain medicinal properties. Wildlife buyers will purchase pangolin hides, scales, and meat. Some pangolins are also bought and traded live, which is inhumane and cruel in nature. Although international trade in pangolin species was banned more than a decade ago, pangolins are still being poached and sold by the hundreds.

SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE CLIMB

See the Bridge as you’ve never seen it before.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is more than a photogenic landmark. It’s much bigger, much more important than that. We’ve driven it, walked it, drifted under it and felt that feeling when you glimpse it through the window of a homeward-bound Boeing. The Sydney Harbour Bridge belongs to us. And we want to share it with the world.

Scaling one of Australia’s best-loved icons is an unforgettable journey of sight and sound. From its fascinating underbelly, along its majestic arch, and peaking at its 134m high summit – BridgeClimb offers you the chance to immerse yourself in the spirit of Sydney.

Nearly 3 million local and international people, from as young as ten to the wise old age of 100, have ascended the great arches to stand at the summit. We have welcomed all sorts – loved-up couples, big families, local school teams, worldly backpackers and the latest celebs.

With our local Climb Leaders as your guide – share in an unexpected perspective of the Bridge, its part in Sydney’s story, and its foothold in today’s cityscape.

There are four different climbs to the top – The Bridge Climb, The Discovery ClimbThe Express Climb and introducing The Mandarin Climb. ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

Divorce Request.

A married couple is driving along a highway doing a steady forty miles per hour.

The wife is behind the wheel. Her husband suddenly looks across at her and speaks in a clear voice.

“Darling,” he says. “I know we’ve been married for twenty years, but I want a divorce.”

The wife says nothing, keeps looking at the road ahead but slowly increases her speed to 45 mph.

The husband speaks again. “I don’t want you to try to talk me out of it”, he says, “because I’ve been having an affair with your best friend, and she’s a far better lover than you are.”

Again the wife stays quiet, but grips the steering wheel more tightly and slowly increases the speed to 55.

He pushes his luck. “I want the house,” he says insistently. Up to 60mph.

“I want the car, too,” he continues…65 mph

“And,” he says, “I’ll have the bank accounts, all the credit cars and the boat.”

The car slowly starts veering towards a massive concrete bridge. This makes him a wee bit nervous, so he asks her: “Isn’t there anything you want?”

The wife at last replies – in a quiet and controlled voice. “No, I’ve got everything I need.” she says.

“Oh, really?” he inquires, “So what have you got?”

Just before they slam into the wall at 75 mph, the wife turns to him and smiles. “The airbag!”

ROTARY INFORMATION

MEMBERSHIP: “Focus, Commitment and Engagement”

Article by PDG Noel Trevaskis, Rotary Coordinator RI Zones 8 and 7B

Clubs and Rotarians often ask me what a Club needs to do to increase its membership; to me there are three critical things. The first one is the Club has to have a Focus on membership. The second one is Commitment, the Club and members have to be committed to membership. And the third one is Engagement, engagement by everyone in the Club.

All members of a club have to be focused on membership; in Rotary membership has to become part of our DNA. To many clubs when asked how many members they would like in the Club usually reply as many as possible. Every Club should have a focus on what is the minimum number of members that they would be comfortable with.  They need to focus on achieving that target and how they are going to achieve it and within what time frame.

For this to happen it takes commitment, commitment particularly from the Club President and Membership Chair and their committee. Membership should be spoken about by the Club President at every Club meeting. Likewise the Club Membership Chair should be meeting constantly with their committee and continually asking members to provide them with names of potential Rotarians to invite to meetings.

Every Rotarian has to be committed to membership. Consider forming your Club into teams of three members with each team committed to the task of bringing in a minimum of one new member a year.  All clubs need to have all their members engaged with club. Being engaged means not just with Rotary programmes, it means with the “whole” Club. If Rotarians enjoy Rotary and if they are engaged with their Rotary Club they should want to share their experience with people who are not Rotarians. If we share Rotary with people we will change lives, not just our own lives will be changed but those people who join us will be able to enjoy the same experience of helping to change lives.

Being a Rotarian is a life changing experience for so many people around the world yet nearly one million Rotarians haven’t shared that experience with others. It is estimated that one million Rotarians haven’t asked anyone to Rotary. If we really enjoy our Rotary, if we are engaged with Rotary why haven’t we invited someone to join Rotary so that they can have the experience of changing people lives?

Every Rotary Club and every Rotarian has to be involved in membership, we all need to be focused, committed and engaged with Rotary. We need to Engage Rotary so that we can Change Lives!  That changed life can be ours, a friend, a work colleague a community leader a business acquaintance, they just need to be asked! They need to be asked by you and me, no-one else is going to do it for us.

THE NEW ROTARY LOGO LAUNCHED TODAY 26 August 2013

MONDAY MEETING 26th AUGUST 2013

Tonight we had a regular meeting with our guest speaker being John Franklin a Coolamon Resident.

Guests present were a Past President of Coolamon Rotary Bob McCormack and John Franklin.  12 members also attended and we had a fine roast dinner.

John Franklin and a map of the Northern Territory.

John was born in Lake Cargelligo and worked for Elders.  John became a Pastoral Inspector for the Department of Lands in the Northern Territory and spent 21 years there with two other pastoral inspectors.  Their duties included overseeing rental leases for the 221 pastoral leases that covered some 1,346,000 square kilometres.  John was based in Darwin and told us many stories on life in the Northern Territory during his time there.  We learnt that the NT obtained self government in 1978 from Canberra.

Ucharonidge Station one of the many pastoral leases that John looked after and one with a connection to Coolamon via John Glassford.  It is a small world and John Glassford once bought 1,000 “Yaks” Brahman Cross Bos Indicus steers from Ucharonidge and shipped them to Trangie.  Ucharonidge was owned by the Beebe Brothers who eventually sold to Kerry Packer.  Ucharonidge was a relatively small property some 250,000 hectares.

President Dick won the meat tray raffle and we had a good night of fellowship following the meeting.

Reminder to all our guests that next Monday is a partners night with another excellent speaker in Colleen Wilson Lord OAM please advise Christine Atkinson of your attendance.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT RON BURTON:

Rotary’s new website will launch 26 August, and I want to encourage each one of you to take a look. I’ve had a sneak preview, and I’m excited about the new face this will give Rotary as well the new opportunities for Rotarians to connect with one another.

After the launch, I encourage you to register and review your profile, update it, and pay special attention to the club profile in Rotary Club Central. This tool can assist your membership efforts, and it offers a great analysis about how your club can be improved. It will show you how your club functions, which includes providing a snapshot of your local community involvement.

Keep in mind, as with any new website, it’s a work in progress. #Rotary staff has worked hard implementing the website Rotarians have been requesting, and they will continue to work on making improvements. I hope you find our new website exciting as well as a big step forward.

You can read more about the new site on:  http://www.rotary.org/

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

Priorities

Woman’s Day

A man was sick and tired of going to work every day while his wife stayed home.

He wanted her to see what he went through so he prayed, “Dear Lord, I go to
work every day and put in 8 hours while my wife merely stays at home.
I want her to know what I go through, so please create a trade in our bodies.

” God, in his infinite wisdom, granted the man’s wish.

The next morning, sure enough, the man awoke as a woman. He arose, cooked breakfast
for his mate, awakened the kids, set out their school clothes, fed them breakfast, packed
their lunches, drove them to school, came home and picked up the dry cleaning, took it to
the cleaners and stopped at the bank to draw out money to pay the power bill and
telephone bill, drove to the power company and the phone company and paid the bills,
went grocery shopping, came home and put away the groceries.

He cleaned the cat’s litter box and bathed the dog. Then it was already 1 p.m. and he hurried
to make the beds, do the laundry, vacuum, dust, and sweep and mop the kitchen floor.
Ran to the school to pick up the kids and got into an argument with them on the way home.
Set out cookies and milk and got the kids organized to do their homework, then set up the
ironing board and watched TV while he did the ironing.

At 4:30 he began peeling potatoes and washing greens for salad, breaded the pork chops
and snapped fresh beans for supper. After supper he cleaned the kitchen, ran the dishwasher,
folded laundry, bathed the kids, and put them to bed. At 9 p.m. he was exhausted and,
though his daily chores weren’t finished, he went to bed where he was expected to make love
— which he managed to get through without complaint.

The next morning he awoke and immediately knelt by the bed and said,
“Lord, I don’t know what I was thinking. I was so wrong to envy my wife’s being able to stay
home all day. Please, oh please, let us trade back.”

The Lord, in his infinite wisdom, replied, “My son, I feel you have learned your lesson and I
will be happy to change things back to the way they were. You’ll have to wait 9 months,
though. You got pregnant last night!”

ROTARY INFORMATION

NEW ROTARY WEB SITE

Today a new Rotary International web site is being launched at the start of business Chicago Time Monday 26th August.

ROTARY.ORG

Now you will need to log in as before on the old site however you may need to register as well:

http://www.rotary.org/myrotary/en

Once there then upload your details to your profile.  You may need your membership number and or the club number.

It is a blog based web site on Word Press which is what we use for all our web sites.  I have found it easy to use and a lot faster than the old site.  There are many many features and it is totally different and there are some teething problems which are being sorted out.

This web site is only as good as you make it as an individual.  However there are some great new features such as starting up your own group with a  group discussion.

The club finder is simply excellent and as we learn about the site I am sure you will all agree that Rotary has entered the 21st century!!!

DIVE RIGHT IN

There’s a lot more we could say about the site, but the best way to find out what’s new is to use it. Explore the sections. Add your voice to a discussion group. Post your club project or browse community projects from across the Rotary world. And let us know what you think. Like any undertaking of this scope, it won’t be perfect. But rest assured that we haven’t finished with the site. In fact, we’re already working on new features and improvements to make your experience the best it can be.

What’s new about the Rotary website? Everything!

Welcome to your new Rotary website. We’ve heard from many corners that Rotary needs a faster, improved website that makes it easy to find what you’re looking for and helps you get your Rotary business done. We listened – and we hope you’re as excited as we are.

“I encourage you to register and review your profile, update it, and pay special attention to the club profile in Rotary Club Central,” say Burton. “I hope you find our new website exciting as well as a big step forward.”

AUGUST IS MEMBERSHIP AND EXTENSIONS MONTH.

During Rotary Membership and Extension Month, I will:

MONDAY MEETING 19th AUGUST 2013

Another excellent meeting with good fellowship and new guests.  Present were Danny Henman Principal of the Coolamon Central School, Daryl Breust our guest speaker, Thomas Graham Honeywell Prize recipient, Digby Graham, Leanne Corbett, Alan White and partners Christine Lorraine and Helen Lewis.  Twelve members were also present.

Tonight we had a meeting in two parts but both engineering related.  Neil Munro presented the cheque to Danny Henman for the fees required for Thomas Graham to attend the Honeywell Engineering Summer School in December.

The Engineering Summer School is an initiative supported by Honeywell, Engineers Australia, Sydney Division and Rotary clubs around NSW and ACT.

It brings together students entering their final year of secondary school who have expressed a sincere interest and application for studies and/or a career in one of the many branches of engineering.

Applications forms are forwarded to year 11 students via schools and Rotary clubs. Students may apply either direct to Engineers Australia or through their local Rotary club. Students are offered places on a first come first served basis.

Successful students gain the opportunity of experiencing day-to-day life as an engineer through access to universities and contact with Australia’s leading engineering organisations.

Opportunities exist to talk with and observe engineers employed in government, private and research facilities covering a broad range of discipline categories. Such opportunities might encompass biomedical, chemical, civil, environmental, electrical, computer or mechanical engineering.

It is hoped that through such experiences, student decisions about future career paths will be made using informed judgments.

Attendance at and transport to HESS involves a personal cost to the student. However, sponsoring Rotary clubs may wish to assist with the payment according to circumstances. Sponsoring clubs are also encouraged to invite students to their weekly meeting both before and after the Summer School as well as endeavouring to keep in contact during subsequent university attendance and after graduation.

Thomas Graham, Neil Munro and Danny Henman

The second part was a talk on engineering and how our guest speaker Daryl Breust started life as an Architectural Draftsman and is now running his own engineering company with his son in Wagga Wagga.  Daryl specialises in steel and commercial buildings. From pencils, T squares and set squares to fully blown computer assisted drawings or CAD as we know it.  A most interesting talk and one that would have inspired Thomas as he embarks on a career in engineering.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT RON BURTON:

With his congenial manner and his inclination to keep things simple, Ron Burton has a natural ability to put people at ease. But don’t let the easygoing demeanor of Rotary International’s new president lull you into thinking that he doesn’t get serious when it’s time for business.

“If you ask my opinion, you’re going to get it,” Burton says, his neighborly look morphing into a solemn gaze. “When I feel strongly about something, I will argue like crazy for my position. I suppose that’s sort of an ego thing, but if I discern that someone has a vested interest or may be looking at a personal economic benefit, I have a simple suggestion: Apply The Four-Way Test.”

An uncompromising sense of ethics may be the only personal quality that the former president of the University of Oklahoma Foundation Inc. is willing to wear on his sleeve. “Like most people, I don’t like to be told I’m wrong,” he says. “But I can be convinced that there’s another way to look at something, and sometimes I’ll change my mind. If it’s an ethical issue, though, you’re not going to tell me I’m wrong. It’s not going to happen. I’ve dealt with too many people over the years who wanted to misuse funds. I’ve looked them in the eye and said, ‘I’m not going to jail for you or anyone else.’”

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

The Spoon

John invited his mother over for dinner one evening. During the meal, she couldn’t help but notice how attractive his roommate Judy was.

She had been suspicious of a relationship between her son and his roommate for quite some time, but this only made her more curious.

She watched the two of them interact over the course of the evening and began to wonder whether there was more between John and Judy than met the eye.

Realizing only too well what his mother was thinking, John said, “I can see your wheels turning Mum and I know what you’re thinking. Rest assured Judy and I are strictly roommates.”

A few days later, Judy went to John and said, “You know the beautiful silver gravy ladle? Well, ever since your mother came to dinner I can’t seem to find it. You don’t think she would have taken it, do you?”

“I doubt it, but I’ll write her a letter just to be sure,” replied John.

John then sat down and wrote his mother the following letter: “Dear Mum, While I’m not saying you ‘did’ take a gravy ladle from my house, and I’m not saying you ‘didn’t’ take a gravy ladle, the fact remains that ever since you were here for dinner one has been missing. Love, Your son.”

Several days later, John received a reply from his mother which read: “Dear John, While I am not saying you ‘do’ sleep with Judy, and I’m not saying you ‘don’t’ sleep with her, the fact remains that she would have found the gravy ladle by now if she were sleeping in her own bed. Love, Mum.”

ROTARY INFORMATION

Rotary Coordinator Mary Berge of Pennsylvania, USA, finds her happiness in serving others, which is why she has remained in Rotary. Read her blog post for more inspiration on engaging your members.

I wonder what Rotary will look like in 2050. I wonder about how our journey, together as Rotarians, will take shape. I imagine the powerful and meaningful projects that will happen along the way. I imagine the positive impact we will have on human lives, all over the world. I imagine the lifelong friendships and bonds that will spontaneously occur as a result. It makes me smile to think about it all.

Have you noticed the common theme in my words above? It’s happiness. I believe that Rotary makes people happy. The givers and receivers of our Rotary service are happy people! And when we are happy, we work, play, and love harder and better. Our performance, energy and creativity increases. In Rotary, the happier we are, the harder and better we serve others!

Success doesn’t lead to happiness; happiness leads to success. Our goal in Rotary is to serve others and to do good in the world and by working toward and achieving these goals, alongside my fellow Rotarians, I am a happy person!

DARKNESS TO LIGHT ROTARY CLUB OF WAGGA WAGGA

Ajoy Joshi and Dr. Alok Sharma

On Saturday night over 300 people including a large number of Rotarians and their partners supported Dr. Alok Sharma and his team in raising funds for the Darkness to Light projects for India and the Riverina.  The Chief Guest was Mr. Tarun Kumar from the High Commission of India to Australia.  The dinner was catered for by Ajoy Joshi from Nilgiri’s Indian Restaurant in Sydney.  Ajoy donated all the food and his time and the dinner was plentiful and delicious.  Thank you Ajoy and all the members of Wagga Wagga Rotary who worked hard to put this night together.

Two from Coolamon Rotary club that is PP Marg (now retired) and PP Garth Perkin will be joining Dr Sharma in India in November as volunteers for Dr Sharma’s next eye camp where Alok will be operating for cataracts and providing glasses and eye check ups for many Indians.

AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL (AFL) MATCH

Where: Sydney Cricket Ground – Moore Park (to be confirmed)
When: 2014 Schedule to be released late October 2014
Price: $TBA

One of the best ways to get beneath the skin of a country is through sport, and when you’re talking Australia, that sport would have to be Australian Rules Football (AFL). Often called “Aussie Rules” by locals, this particular game of football pits two teams of 18 players against each other on an oval nearly three times the size of a soccer pitch. Their sole aim is to get possession of an oval-shaped football and kick it through one of three sets of goal posts at each end. This rough and ready contact sport sees players hand-balling, bouncing, catching and doing anything in their power to possess the ball. The game is fast and furious, with brutal contests and collisions whipping crowds in to an excitable frenzy.

Join the HOC at a big weekend match in Sydney to experience this uniquely Aussie sporting event first hand.

Details

The match draw for the 2014 AFL Season will not be published until October 2013. The HOC are working to have an “Aussie Rules” football game scheduled for the evening of Friday 30 May or Saturday 31 May (afternoon or evening) however the draw is a random selection as to teams and venue. Further details will be provided later in October 2013. If the draw provides a game in Sydney, this is a not to be missed opportunity to see the big men fly in this enthralling game of physical skill and strength. The Sydney Swans are the 2012 premiers and on course (most Sydney-siders have fingers crossed) to regain the flag in 2013.

Inclusions: One ticket to an AFL match in Sydney. Free transport provided using free public transport pass provided courtesy of NSW Government.

Coolamon Rotary News Bulletin #07

AUGUST IS MEMBERSHIP AND EXTENSIONS MONTH.

Beatrice Cervi of the Rotary Club of Perth, WA, recently posed this question on the Official Rotary International Group site on LinkedIn: “My club is currently working on a strategy to renew and revitalise the club due to declining membership in recent years. Have you been through this process and what KPI’s have you implemented?” Click here to go to the website.Within a few hours and over the following days she received lots of good advice from Rotarians all around the world. Some of the edited responses are shown below:

Georgene Hildebrand, Michigan USA: What wonderful ideas and comments on this very important question. The question to explore might be “why” do people stay in Rotary? What is the compelling reason why we think Rotary is so important in our lives? Most Rotarians on this conversation “have Rotary in them”. So we might think about how we can share why it’s so important to us.

Ron O’Connor, Florida USA: My club was facing this issue about 3 years ago and we discovered a treasure trove of young professionals looking to become involved in their community. The group is an offshoot of our chamber of commerce. In the past three years this group alone has yielded some young attorneys, CPA’s, an architect, environmental professionals, and others who have become productive involved Rotarians in short order. One of these young guns is our incoming President, and another is President-Elect. If you bring in younger members be aware they want to rise up the ladder quickly and as previously mentioned, may not subscribe to the rituals older Rotarians have become accustomed to.

Best Divorce letter

Dear Wife,

I’m writing you this letter to tell you that I’m leaving you forever. I’ve been a good man to you for 7 years & I have nothing to show for it. These last 2 weeks have been hell. … Your boss called to tell me that you quit your job today & that was the last straw. Last week, you came home & didn’t even notice I had a new haircut, had cooked your favorite meal & even wore a brand new pair of silk boxers. You ate in 2 minutes, & went straight to sleep after watching all of your soaps. You don’t tell me you love me anymore; you don’t want sex or anything that connects us as husband & wife. Either you’re cheating on me or you don’t love me anymore; whatever the case, I’m gone.
Your EX-Husband

P.S. don’t try to find me. Your SISTER & I are moving away to West Virginia together! Have a great life!

Dear Ex-Husband,

Nothing has made my day more than receiving your letter. It’s true you & I have been married for 7 years, although a good man is a far cry from what you’ve been. I watch my soaps so much because they drown out your constant whining & griping Too bad that doesn’t work. I DID notice when you got a hair cut last week, but the 1st thing that came to mind was ‘You look just like a girl!’ Since my mother raised me not to say anything if you can’t say something nice, I didn’t comment. And when you cooked my favorite meal, you must have gotten me confused with MY SISTER, because I stopped eating pork 7 years ago. About those new silk boxers: I turned away from you because the $49.99 price tag was still on them, & I prayed it was a coincidence that my sister had just borrowed $50 from me that morning. After all of this, I still loved you & felt we could work it out. So when I hit the lotto for 10 million dollars, I quit my job & bought us 2 tickets to Jamaica But when I got home you were gone.. Everything happens for a reason, I guess. I hope you have the fulfilling life you always wanted. My lawyer said that the letter you wrote ensures you won’t get a dime from me. So take care.

Signed, Your Ex-Wife, Rich As Hell & Free!
P.S. I don’t know if I ever told you this, but my sister Carla was born Carl. I hope that’s not a problem.

ROTARY INFORMATION

POLIO OUTBREAK IN SOMALIA

In May, a two-year-old girl from Mogadishu became the first confirmed case of polio in Somalia in more than six years. The country had been polio-free since March 2007.

As of July, the virus has paralyzed 95 Somali children: 94 confirmed cases in South Central Zone, which includes Mogadishu, and a case in Somaliland. Another nine cases have also been reported in the Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya.

“Lack of access to routine immunization in Somalia has created the largest known reservoir of unvaccinated children in a single geographic area in the world. The total number of Somali children who had never been vaccinated between 2008 and 2012 was estimated to reach a million,” says Sikander Khan, UNICEF Somalia Representative.

“The poliovirus in such a large reservoir has the potential to result in a catastrophic outbreak, the likes of which are beginning to be seen and as such constitutes an international emergency.”

Britain will help to vaccinate more than 6 million people against an outbreak of polio in Somalia and Kenya, International Development Secretary Justine Greening has announced. The UK will provide £10 million to allow the UN’sWorld Health Organisation to continue a vital vaccination campaign to tackle the first outbreak in Somalia since 2007. The UN has warned that without further support the disease could quickly develop into an epidemic across East Africa and put countless lives and livelihoods at risk.

Thanks to the British government, more than 6 million people will be vaccinated against an outbreak of ‪#‎polio‬ in Somalia and Kenya, announced International Development Secretary Justine Greening.

CAUSES WORTH SUPPORTING

ROTARY FOUNDATION POLIO PLUS

After 25 years of hard work, Rotary and its partners are on the brink of eradicating this tenacious disease, but a strong push is needed now to root it out once and for all. It is a window of opportunity of historic proportions.

Reaching the ultimate goal of a polio-free world presents ongoing challenges, not the least of which is a hundreds of million dollar funding gap. Of course, Rotary alone can’t fill this gap, but continued Rotarian advocacy for government support can help enormously.

As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere remain at risk. The stakes are that high. As can be seen by the outbreak in Somalia this month.

The traditional House of Friendship has been renamed as The Billabong for Sydney 2014.  A Billabong is an aboriginal name for a waterhole around which meetings would often be held.  The 2014 Billabong will be located in the grounds of the Sydney Showground, part of Sydney Olympic Park. Located in The Dome (a spectacular timber structure and the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere) and Exhibition Halls 2,3 and 4.  The Billabong will have over 14,000 square meters of display space, and will be the place to meet old and new acquaintances. See exhibits or displays of Rotary work from all over the world, discuss projects and learn of the many opportunities provided to Rotarians.

Approximately one half of the Billabong will be dedicated to the work of Rotary International and Rotary clubs where you can pick up great ideas for new projects for your club and learn of the assistance, which Rotary International can provide to assist in this work.  The other half of the Billabong will illustrate more great Rotary work and show many aspects of Australia and its Rotary clubs.
