NOVEMBER IS ROTARY FOUNDATION MONTH.

 MEETING MONDAY NOVEMBER 9th. 2015

Our weekly meeting was a bit light on attendance, with many of our members engaged in the harvest now that we’ve had some dry weather.  With more rain forecast for Thursday, the harvesters and grain trucks will no doubt be running around the clock, making the most of the good weather until then.

Because of the town meeting scheduled for next Monday (16 Nov), we have decided to forego our weekly meeting next week and attend the town meeting in lieu.  The meeting will include some very important discussion about shire amalgamation, a topic that we thought was dead but is now back on the table.  The meeting will be held at 6:00 pm in St Michael’s Hall on Methul Street.  We’re hoping for a good roll-up of Rotarians, especially in light of our recent meeting with the shire council.  Please plan to attend, and wear your Rotary shirt.  This will be a very important community event!

Our guest speaker was our own Leslie Weston, who presented a travelogue of her recent trips to China.  Leslie has been working for the past few years with colleagues in Yunnan province, which is located in very southern China (near Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar/Burma).  We learned a bit about the plant biodiversity of the area, which is one of the eight biodiversity hotspots on the planet, and its local inhabitants, many of whom belong to one of 27 ethnic minorities.  We were treated to some beautiful photos of the landscape, the local people, and the exotic fruits that are produced in the area.  President Wayne thanked our speaker and presented her with a kangaroo change purse in appreciation.

One sunny morning at the end of June 1991, a van drove through the busy, rush-hour streets of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Winding through traffic to a northern suburb, the van arrived at the Forward Command Headquarters of the Defense Ministry. Security guards stopped it for inspection. When they did, the two suicide bombers driving the van detonated their cargo: thousands of kilograms of plastic explosives.

The roof of the building was blown off completely. Debris was strewn for blocks. In total, 21 people were killed and 175 people injured, among them many pupils of the girls’ school next door. More than a kilometer away, the blast shattered every window in my home. My wife raced toward the sound of the explosion – toward our daughter’s school.

 MEETING MONDAY NOVEMBER 2nd. 2015

Last night we held a club assembly and many items were discussed including the NYE Festival, Girl Guide hall, Easter markets, bike track update, moo poo update, and a couple of other items.  Next week’s Foundation dinner, which will be held in Wagga on Thursday (12 November).  We discussed possibly attending that function in lieu of our weekly meeting, but decided against it because four of our members will be running bingo that night. Members are encouraged to attend the Foundation dinner on Thursday if they’re able to.  If they do plan to attend, members need to notify Wayne by this Friday (6 November) so that numbers can be provided to the organisers for catering purposes.

The Dinner will be held at the Wagga Wagga Country Golf Club, Plumpton Rd, Lake Albert, at 6 for 6.30pm. The guest speakers will be Professor Elaine Dietsch, an academic and midwife who has worked in Africa on many occasions. Elaine has received the Rotary District Vocational Excellence Award and also works with Dr Luc, who many of you may have heard speak at the District Conference in Cowra this year. She will speak on Maternal and Child Health, one of the key Focus Areas for the Foundation.

The Rotary Foundation Manager from RI Parramatta, Bruce Allen, will tell us his Rotary story and how the Foundation does “Good in the World”. Wagga Wagga and surrounding clubs are asked to change their meeting night that week to the Thursday to support this event.

The cost is $25/head and members are encouraged to bring partners and friends.

Next Monday night November 9th. Dr Leslie Weston will be talking about her travels especially to China where Leslie is this week.  Please bring your partners and guests to learn about Leslie’s work around the world.

Traveling in a train were a Wallaby, an All Black, a spectacular looking blonde and an older lady. After several minutes of the trip, the train happens to pass through a dark tunnel, and the unmistakable sound of a slap is heard.

When they leave the tunnel, the Wallaby had a big red slap mark on his cheek.
(1) The blonde thought – “That horrible Wallaby wanted to touch me and by mistake, he must have put his hand on the lady, who in turn must have slapped his face.”
(2) The older lady thought – “This dirty Wallaby laid his hands on the blonde and she smacked him.”
(3) The Wallaby thought – “That bloody All Black put his hand on that blonde and by mistake she slapped me.”
(4) The All Black thought – “I hope there’s another tunnel soon so I can smack that stupid Wallaby again.”

ROTARY WILL HONOR SIX ‘GLOBAL WOMEN OF ACTION’ AT THE UNITED NATIONS FOR THEIR LEADERSHIP AND HUMANITARIAN SERVICE.

EVANSTON, Ill. (Oct. 19, 2015) — Rotary will honor six women – all members of Rotary clubs across the globe – at its “Rotary Day at the United Nations” event on Nov. 7. Rotary’s ‘Global Women of Action’ will be recognized for donating their time, talents and expertise towards helping thousands of people in need throughout the world.

Since the volunteer service organization’s founding more than 100 years ago, Rotary has harnessed the strength of professional and community leaders to tackle humanitarian challenges at home and abroad. Today, Rotary provides a platform for successful men and women of all ethnicities, faiths and cultures to make the world a better place through volunteer service.

In May 2015 the Rotary Club of Orange Calare conducted a series of very successful presentations to high school students which were designed to create an awareness of problems caused by addiction to the drug known as ICE.

This is part of the local media publicity which followed.

There is also an excellent article reporting on the Forums in the latest edition of Rotary Down Under.

The forums were briefly discussed at the recent Presidents forum and several Clubs expressed interest in learning more, possibly with a view to arranging similar forums in their own communities.

OCTOBER IS ROTARY

Economic and Community Development Month.

OTHER EVENTS THIS WEEK.

BIKE TRACK MEETING.

Our Rotary Club is looking at providing the Coolamon Community a push bike or mountain bike track for the use of families and individuals to enjoy the State Forest on the outskirts of Coolamon.  This wee a meeting was called by some concerned residents of Coolamon on this development.  There we a number of people present including the Forestry Manager Stephen Campbell from Dubbo.

The Coolamon Landcare Group called for the meeting.  Everyone had plenty to talk about and the end result was a committee to be formed with representatives from all parties.  It was a cordial meeting and all parties now know what Rotary is proposing and what little impact this bike track will have on the local environment.  Dick Jennings, Wayne Lewis, Graham Miles and John Glassford attended on behalf of Rotary.

ANNUAL COOLAMON GANMAIN HOSPITAL FETE.

Last Saturday the Hospital auxiliary held their annual fete and this year it was held at Victory Park in Ganmain.  As always Coolamon Rotary was responsible for the chocolate wheel raffle.  Our volunteers were Bern Milne, Myffy Collette, Heather McKinley, Wayne Lewis, Dick Jennings and John Glassford.  Ganmain is one third the size of Coolamon BUT we managed to get through 11 spins of the wheel at $2 per ticket.  Something we find hard to achieve when the fete is held in Coolamon.  Well done Ganmain.

This was a record year for this annual fete and $5,500 was raised by the people of Ganmain including $1,240 from the Rotary chocolate wheel.

A gorgeous young redhead goes into the doctor’s office and said that her body hurt wherever she touched it.

“Impossible!” says the doctor. “Show me.”

The redhead took her finger, pushed on her left breast and screamed, then she pushed her elbow and screamed in even more. She pushed her knee and screamed; likewise she pushed her ankle and screamed. Everywhere she touched made her scream.

The doctor said, “You’re not really a redhead, are you?

“Well, no” she said, “I’m actually a blonde.”

Our 1.2 million-member organization started with the vision of one man—Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.

OUR ONGOING COMMITMENT

Rotarians have not only been present for major events in history—we’ve been a part of them. From the beginning, three key traits have remained strong throughout Rotary:

We’re truly international. Only 16 years after being founded, Rotary had clubs on six continents. Today we’re working together from around the globe both digitally and in-person to solve some of our world’s most challenging problems.

OCTOBER IS ROTARY

Economic and Community Development Month.

MOO POO DAY 3 UPDATE.

Last Saturday morning we bagged and loaded the remaining few tonnes of our 100% weed free top quality moo poo for sale and distribution.  We had a great role up of volunteers albeit a few turned up late probably forgot to put their watches into Eastern Australian Daylight Saving Time.  A good time was had by all despite the flies.

MEETING MONDAY OCTOBER 19th. 2015

Tonight we held a Vocational Services meeting at the Coolamon Shire Council Chambers.  We were met by our Mayor John Seymour and General Manager Tony Donoghue .  Our members and their guests had many many questions that both John and Tony were more than happy to answer.

We had several guests tonight including Mayor John Seymour and Margaret Seymour as well as Tony Donoghue and Donna Donoghue.  Welcome back to Christine Lorraine and other guests included Helen Lewis, Susan Glassford, Heather McKinley and Carmel Jarrett.   There were 17 members present a good turn out.

We then moved on  to the Sports Club where we shared dinner with our guests and the night concluded after several more questions for the Council.  All in all we learnt that our Council ticked all the 7 boxes required for a good Council.  The main topic was the push by the NSW Government for inefficient councils to amalgamate.  Tony feels strongly that Coolamon Shire Council is not one of them and that the Shire is in good financial state as are the roads and the citizens that they look after.

Thanks go to Rtn. Dave McKinley as Vocational Services Director for organising one of our rare vocational services visits.  The next one is on February 29th a joint Coolamon and Wagga Wagga Sunrise Vocational meeting at the Huff ‘n’ Puff Constructions enterprise in Ganmain.

President Wayne Lewis reminded members that next Monday night is our AGM and election of office bearers for 2016-2017 and encouraged everyone to attend and volunteer to join the board and committees of PE Don Dyce.

Reminders to members that next Saturday at 2.30 pm we volunteer for the Coolamon and Ganmain Hospital fete in Ganmain at Victory Gardens.

Rtn. Dave McKinley thanked all of the volunteers who turned up to bag the last of the semi load of Moo Poo.

Rtn. Daryl Breust leaves for the Kokoda Track this week and all our members wish Daryl all the best for this arduous trek, around 100 ks.

A dinner speaker was in such a hurry to get to his engagement that when he arrived and sat down at the head table, he suddenly realized that he had forgotten his false teeth. Turning to the man next to him he said, “I forgot my teeth…”

The man said, “No problem.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a pair of false teeth. “Try these,” he said.

The speaker tried them. “Too loose,” he said.

The man then said, “I have another pair – try these.”

The speaker tried them and responded, “Too tight.”

The man was not taken back at all. He then said, “I have one more pair. Try them.”

The speaker said, “They fit perfectly.” With that he ate his meal and gave his speech. After the dinner meeting was over, the speaker went over to thank the man who had helped him.

“I want to thank you for coming to my aid. Where is your office? I’ve been looking for a good dentist.”

The man replied, “I’m not a dentist. I’m an undertaker.”

This week, I am attending the 2015 Parliament of the World’s Religions here in Salt Lake City, a gathering of 10,000 religious people looking to advance world peace, many through some form of social entrepreneurship.

We had a very successful day at the Evolution Mining Open Day. Our Rotary club members worked on the BBQ and sold raffle tickets on both days. All proceeds fromthe raffle were generously donated back to our Rotary Club. One of the best ways to learn about Rotary is to attend a Rotary International Convention, RICON.  They are held every year in a different country.  The second RICON that I attended representing Coolamon Rotary Club was Los Angeles.  Here are some memories of 2008 {Click on the thumb nail for a larger picture}:

It was a great RICON and I was with RFFA now RFHA then and spent most of the time in the RFFA Booth.  Went to the Hollywood Bowl and listened ot Burt Bacharach and many other well known LA artists.  The Hollywood Bowl was hired by RI for one of the events held during the RICON.  One of the plenary sessions had Dr. Margaret Chan, Director General, from WHO as a key note speaker on polio and our partnership with WHO, CDC and UNICEF.

Drinking beer could prevent the damage of the brain cells, says a research carried out by Jianguo Fang and his colleagues of Lanzhou University’s school of chemistry. Drinking liquor is not a much appreciated practice in the past but partying has become a part of life these days. While the goodness of the wine is well known, it’s time to know something more about beer.Beer is not usually considered an evil for health when taken in reasonable quantity, but the goodness of beer is sure to amaze the beer lovers.

A compound called xanthohumol present in the beer is observed to have anti-carcinogenic, anti-oxidation and cardiovascular-protection properties.During brewing, an ingredient called hops is added to the beer that gives a bitter and tangy taste to it. Hops are the female flower of the hops plant known to have quite some medicinal values. Hops are the source of the compound xanthohumol present in the beer that renders goodness to the beer.

These xanthohumol are observed to protect neuronal cells present in the brain and thereby slows down the development of brain disorders, reports Fangs and his team.The oxidative damage to the neuronal cells is responsible for the development of brain diseases, according to the research, said Fang.

Brain defects like Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative conditions could be prevented or slowed down by the preventing the oxidative damage to these neuronal cells.Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that causes interruption in memory, thinking and behaviour in a person’s regular life, whereas Parkinson’s disease is a chronic and progressive movement disorder due to the death of vital nerve cells or neurons.

No cure has been found for these neurodegenerative diseases so far, and if this research is to be believed, then it is no wonder a joy to the beer brewers and beer lovers.

OCTOBER IS ROTARY

Economic and Community Development Month.

Nearly 1.4 billion employed people live on less than $1.25 a day. We carry out service projects that enhance economic and community development and develop opportunities for decent and productive work for young and old. We also help strengthen local entrepreneurs and community leaders, particularly women, in impoverished communities.

MEETING MONDAY OCTOBER 12th. 2015

CLUB ASSEMBLY

Last night we had our first Club Assembly for many a long year!  We had 17 members present a great effort from everyone who attended.

Some good conversations and ideas were discussed including a Shire Newspaper led by Myffy and Bernadette which kicked off the night in a positive way.

Dave spoke in detail on the progress of the Moo Poo project and called for volunteers for Saturday morning same place same time to complete the bagging.  So far 190 bags have been sold and we have 253 on hand.

Ian Durham spoke on Youth and the upcoming RYLA programme.  RYLA is for people 18 to 28 employed or in tertiary studies. All past participants are enthusiastic supporters of the programme, it is common for us to hear that it has been a life changing experience.  Our newest member Alex Thompson attended RYLA.

Planning ahead for the 2017 Coolamon Rotary Telephone Book.

Thanks to all those who worked on the Gears and Beers check points and ot those who also worked on the caravan for the scarecrow Festival in Coolamon.

Membership and promotion ideas for our club were also discussed including creating a slogan to attract new members.

The Queensland drought appeal was raised and will be discussed at the next board meeting.  Article at the end of the bulletin on the appeal.

Porsche

A fifteen-year-old came home with a Porsche and his parents began to yell and scream,

“Where did you get that car?”

He calmly told them, “I bought it today.”

“With what money!?” demanded his parents. “We know what a Porsche costs.”

“Well,” said the boy, “this one cost me fifteen dollars.”

The parents began to yell even louder. “Who would sell a car like that for fifteen dollars!?” they asked.

“It was the lady up the street,” said the boy. “Don’t know her name — they just moved in.

She saw me ride past on my bike and asked me if I wanted to buy a Porsche for fifteen dollars.

“Oh my goodness!” moaned the mother, “she must be a child abuser. Who knows what she will do next? John, you go right up there and see what’s going on.”

So the boy’s father walked up the street to the house where the lady lived and found her out in the yard calmly planting flowers. He introduced himself as the father of the boy to whom she has sold a Porsche for fifteen dollars and demanded to know why she did it.

“Well,” she said, “this morning I got a phone call from my husband. I thought he was on a business trip, but I learned from a friend he has run off to Hawaii with his secretary and really doesn’t intend to come back. He claimed he was stranded and asked me to sell his new Porsche and send him the money.

So I did.”

I attended the Zone 20A Institute in Mombasa, Kenya and had the great honor of meeting with President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta. In support of First Lady Kenyatta’s Beyond Zero Campaign, the Rotary Club of Muthaiga, with the support of fellow Rotarians in Kenya and with sponsorship from Bank Tanzania Limited, have donated a new mobile clinic. With this clinic, Beyond Zero will continue to provide pre- and post-natal care to children and women throughout Kenya.

The program promotes healthy living and disease prevention by implementing a massive, annual campaign in four countries in Africa that provides comprehensive, free health care services tens of thousands of people in underprivileged communities.

The services include lifelong immunizations to children, such as polio and measles vaccines and comprehensive life-saving annual screens such as HIV, TB, Malaria, Diabetes, Hypertension and more.

One of the best ways ot learn about Rotary is to attend a Rotary International Convention, RICON.  They are held every year in a different country.  The first RICON that I attended representing Coolamon Rotary Club was Chicago in the Centenary year of Rotary.  It was an eye opener and I learnt so much the plenary sessions were amazing with some wonderful speakers.  Above all I made life long friendships with Rotarains form all around the world.  Here are some memories of 2005 {Click on the thumb nail for a larger picture}:

The RICON started with a parade with many bands and 100s of marchers I represented ROTI or Rotarains On The Internet.  Chicago architecture is stunning.  The House of Friendship was an eye opener so many different projects form around the world.  I placed our Coolamon club banner and list of members in 2005 in a time capsule to be opened in 2105.  One of the highlights was dinner at the Field museum.

Pretoria – A church that claims to be able to turn people into snakes and allows a ‘prophet’ to jump on congregants without them feeling pain is being lambasted on Facebook.

Another great meeting tonight with many guests and the induction of Alex Thompson as a member of our club.  Our guest speaker was Alicia Clarke from Coolamon talking on her life of crime!  Alicia is a Forensics Scientist Senior Crime Officer and works with the Wagga Wagga Police.

Alicia Clarke Guest Speaker:

Alicia was the guest of Rtn. John Nulty and gave us a most interesting talk on her work as a forensic scientist with the Wagga Wagga Police.  Alicia did say that the work was not as glamorous as the shows on commercial TV these days.  Alicia works as a Senior Crime Officer in Wagga Wagga.

Alicia said that they were under a heavy work load these days and understaffed.  In fact Alicia has attended over 6,500 crime scenes in the past 6 years.  Her work includes fingerprinting and DNA sampling.  These days results from the DNA data base can be available in 2-3 days, where once it took several months.

Alicia works as  a civilian in the police force and collects and records evidence from volume crime jobs such as break, enter and steal as well as car theft and crimes not involving violence.  Alicia gave us a demonstration of finger printing and took several finger prints from our members and guests present.

10 Penguins

A man was driving and saw a truck stalled on the side of the highway that had ten penguins standing next to it. The man pulled over and asked the truck driver if he needed any help. The truck driver replied, “If you can take these penguins to the zoo while I wait for AAA that will be great!” The man agreed and the penguins hopped into the back of his car. Two hours later, the trucker was back on the road again and decided to check on the penguins. He showed up at the zoo and they weren’t there!

He headed back into his truck and started driving around the town, looking for any sign of the penguins, the man, or his car. While driving past a movie theater, the truck driver spotted the guy walking out with the ten penguins. The truck driver yelled, “What are you doing? You were supposed to take them to the zoo!” The man replied, “I did and then I had some extra money so I took them to go see a movie.”

The Bell Ringer

A church’s bell ringer passed away. The church posted the job opening in the local newspaper’s classified ads and a man came in with no arms wanting the job. The clergy weren’t sure he could do it, but he convinced them to let him try it.

They climbed the bell tower and the guy ran toward the bell and hit it with his head, producing a beautiful melody. They gave him the job on the spot. The next day he went to ring the bell, tripped, bounced off the bell and fell to the sidewalk below. Two priests were walking past. One asked, “Do you know this guy?” The other responded, “No, but his face rings a bell.”

The next day, the dead man’s twin brother came in for the again vacant bell ringer position. He also had no arms. The clergy led him up to the bell tower, where he ran at the bell, tripped and fell to the sidewalk below. The same two priests walked up. The first asked, “Do you know him?” The second responded, “No, but he’s a dead ringer for his brother.”

The Rotary Dolphin Wishing Well at the Hillarys Boat Harbour in Western Australia uniquely combines public art and community fund raising – and all because of three real life bottle-nosed dolphins:  Rajah, Mila and Echo. The idea for a community wishing well was conceived when three popular bottle-nose dolphins, Rajah, Mila and Echo, died mysteriously at Hillarys Boat Harbour in December 1999.

The wishing well  became a ten year joint project by the Rotary Clubs of Hillarys and Wanneroo, and since March 2010 every time a $2 coin is inserted in the wishing well the larger-than-life dolphin sculpture does a good turn – a complete 360 degree rotation. The net proceeds from the wishing well are now being distributed to local and other community projects identified by the two Rotary Clubs.

ONE DOWN TWO TO GO!

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on 25 September that Nigeria is now polio-free and has been officially removed from the list of countries where polio is endemic. It’s been 14 months since any cases of polio caused by the wild virus have been detected there.

With Nigeria’s historic achievement, polio remains endemic in only two countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan. That means transmission of the virus has never been stopped there.

Nigeria was the last country in Africa where polio was endemic. The continent celebrated its own first full year without the disease on 11 August. Once three years have passed without a case in WHO’s entire African region, officials will certify polio eradicated there.

LATEST RHINO POACHING FIGURES FROM SOUTH AFRICA 

Over 750 Rhinos in South Africa have been poached so far in 2015.

Rhino horn is made of keratin, the same protein found in the human fingernail. Still, it fetches as much as $5,550 an ounce on the black market.

Conservationist have tried everything to stop the slaughter: They’ve relocated rhinos from Kruger to fenced-in private parks; they’ve protectively removed the rhino’s horns; they’ve poisoned and dyed the horns.

None of it seems to have worked, however, and private and national reserves are now turning to military tactics.

So again, while the demand for rhino horn remains, the poaching of rhinos from the wild will continue; farmed rhino will not help as it is not seen as a substitute product by the Vietnamese elite who can afford genuine, wild rhino horn.

GREAT NEWS:

WASHINGTON (Sept. 25, 2015) — In a historic accord to save Africa’s elephants from out-of-control poaching, President Barack Obama and President Xi Jinping agreed Friday to end commercial ivory sales in the United States and China.

The announcement marks the first public commitment by President Xi to end ivory sales in China, the world’s largest market, and follows a pledge made by Chinese officials in May to phase out the domestic trade. It also puts heavy pressure on Hong Kong, a global hub for commercial ivory, to ban its legal trade — one that has provided cover for smuggling and illicit sales of ivory from African elephants poached in recent years. A recent survey found that over 90% of ivory sold in Hong Kong was being smuggled into mainland China.

Have you registered?  With just a week to go make sure you do. We had 122 riders on the start line of the 105km ride at last years event and 440 total riders. This year we are aiming for a total of 800 riders. The community support blew us away last year and can’t wait to have it bigger and better this year.

COOLAMON ROTARY “MOO POO”

This weekend saw the beginning of the new club project “Moo Poo”.  Dave McKinley and President Wayne Lewis went to a feedlot and took delivery of 27 tonnes of the best moo poo weed free and ready to work for the gardeners.  We had several volunteers on Saturday to bag part of the load.  Together with Dave OIC and Wayne were Henk Hulsman, Don Dyce, Ian Durham, Trevor Parkes, Alex Thompson, John Glassford, Paul Weston and Helen Lewis.  Click on the thumb nails for a larger image.  We managed to bag 250 all at around 20 kgs. each.

MEETING MONDAY SEPTEMBER 21st. 2015

An excellent night with a very good guest speaker, Matt Quade.  Our guests included, Helen Lewis, Di, Marilyn Jennings and Alex Thompson for the last time as our guest, next week Alex joins our club.  Also attending 17 of our members.

Gears and Beers Volunteers if you are still available for Sunday 4th October let us know please.  We have enough now but it will be a great event not to be missed and to be able to help Wollundry RC is essential.

The first Club Assembly for ALL our members to view their ideas and exchange ideas will be held on Monday 12th October.  It is intended to hold these on a monthly basis and shifting the board meeting to another night, probably a Wednesday night.  We hope that all members will take advantage of this monthly meeting to grow our club and make us stronger.

One of the best speakers we have had and we have had some excellent guest speakers this year.  Matt hails from Tallimba near West Wyalong.  Matt gave a great account of his work for a private security firm rebuilding Iraq.  However that is not the full story as Matt has also worked in Afghanistan, Libya, Haiti and currently in Somalia.   Matt has also served in the French Foreign Legion.  Matt’s life has been full of adventure to say the least.

In 2003 Matt went to Iraq and he has so many very interesting stories to relate.  One of his observations was that it is easy to take a country but almost impossible to hold it, so true!  Matt is not a friend of journalists who stay in the Green Zone and have others do the hard yards often losing their lives.

Matt went on to talk about corruption, religion and foreign aid among some of the subjects that he covered.     He spoke on Libya and Haiti especially on the foreign aid that arrived from the Red Cross and how millions were siphoned into building a luxury hotel there.

His statement that President Putin will not make the same mistakes in Syria as the Russians did in Afghanistan struck a cord.  Matt finished up on a local issue with the AWB (Australian Wheat Board) and the UN kick backs and how this related ot his home town of Tallimba where the grass is growing between the rail tracks.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

While conducting some business at the Court House, I overheard a lady, who had been arrested for assaulting a Mammogram Technician, say, “Your Honor, I’m guilty, but…..there were extenuating circumstances.”

The female Judge said, sarcastically, “I’d certainly like to hear those extenuating circumstances.” I did too, so I listened as the lady told her story.

“Your Honor, I had a mammogram appointment, which I actually kept. I was met by this perky little clipboard carrier smiling from ear to ear and she tilted her head to one side and crooned, “Hi! I’m Belinda! All I need you to do is step into this room right here, strip to the waist, then slip on this gown. Everything clear?”

I’m thinking, “Belinda, try decaf. This ain’t rocket science.” Belinda then skipped away to prepare the chamber of horrors.

With the right side finished, Belinda flipped me (literally) to the left and said, “Hmmmm. Can you stand on your tippy toes and lean in a tad so we can get everything?” Fine, I answered.

I was freezing, bruised, and out of air, so why not use the remaining circulation in my legs and neck to finish me off? My body was in a holding pattern that defied gravity (with my other breast wedged between those two 4-inch pieces of square glass) when I heard and felt a zap!

Complete darkness, the power was off!

Belinda said, “Uh-oh, maintenance is working, bet they hit a snag.” Then she headed for the door.

“Excuse me! You’re not leaving me in this vise alone are you?” I shouted.

Belinda kept going and said, “Oh, you fussy puppy…the door’s wide open so you’ll have the emergency hall lights. I’ll be right back.”

Before I could shout NOOOO! she disappeared.

And that’s exactly how Bubba and Earl, “maintenance men Extraordinaire” found me…half-naked with part of me dangling from the Jaws of Life and the other part smashed between glass!

After exchanging a polite, ‘Hi, how’s it going’ type greeting, Bubba (or possibly Earl) asked, to my utter disbelief, if I knew the power was off.

Trying to disguise my hysteria, I replied with as much calmness as possible, “Uh, yes, I did but thanks anyway.”

“OK, you take care now,” Bubba replied and waved good-bye as though I’d been standing in the line at the grocery store.

Two hours later, Belinda breezes in wearing a sheepish grin.

Making no attempt to suppress her amusement, she said, “Oh, I am sooo sorry! The power came back on and I totally forgot about you! And silly me, I went to lunch. Are we upset?”

And that, Your Honor, is exactly how her head ended up between the clamps….”

The judge could hardly contain her laughter as she said, “Case Dismissed!”

They had a lot of fun and did a lot of work over 5 days at Diani Beach many of the friends we made on our trip to Kenya were there.  Including IPDG Bimal Kantaria whose D9212 won the award for the most new members inducted world wide in 2014-2015.

Last month, a wild elephant and two of his friends were attacked by poachers. Wounded by poisoned arrows, they trudged across the African landscape to the one place that could help them: the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT).

Though the wild elephant had never been a resident at DSWT, he knew elephants who had. He had mated with two former orphans who were raised at DSWT’s Ithumba Reintegration Centre, who now lead their own wild herd. In 2011, he fathered babies with them, whom DSWT named Mwende and Yetu.

And DSWT is certain he knew this group of humans meant help.

Aus Gov’t, please don’t slash funding for polio eradication just when the end is in sight!

Last year in Sydney, Rotarians from D9700 were part of almost 20,000 Rotarians from scores of countries around the world to witness then-Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, make a promise to the children of the world.  He said that the Australian Government would contribute $100 million to help finish the eradication effort.  A very proud moment for Australia!

Now, barely a year later, we read in the paper that the Australian Government is getting ready to renege on that promise and divert $36 million of the funding away from the Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategy — and that’s on top of an $8 million cut in May.

Apart from the breach of promise, this is not clever policy.

SEPTEMBER IS ROTARY Basic Education and Literacy Month

One of our sponsored vulnerable and at risk girls from the Mathare area of Nairobi, Quinter Ochieng, is now set to go to Teachers College.  Quinter has been a star pupil and is now qualified as a midwife.  Quinter now wants her teacher’s diploma so that she can go back to Mathare and teach other young women.  We started funding Quinter and her sister following the Mountains of the Moon 2011 climb.

MEETING MONDAY SEPTEMBER 14th. 2015

This week was a quiet one for our club however we had Bingo on Thursday, Cool Grass breakfast on Sunday and a general meeting followed by our September board meeting.  We had plenty of volunteers at Marg and Garth Perkin’s home for the Cool Grass breakfast.

The meeting tonight was a combination of a normal dinner followed by a board meeting.

There has been much discussion following the board meeting and President Wayne has consulted with several of our members and we are going to change the meeting structures, not by any great deal but with the welfare of the members in mind.  It is encouraging to see so many new members who want to become involved in the club so to this end we will have a monthly meeting for the members run by the members something like a Club Assembly, Planning Night, Discussion Night.  This will be on the 2nd Monday of each month to begin with.  The board will meet on another night.

“Moo Poo”:  Dave McKinley and Wayne Lewis will be collecting 27 tonnes this week.  27 tonnes of the best quality of composted weed free Moo Poo.  The members who volunteered to start bagging this gold will meet at Wayne’s property on Saturday at 8.30 am.  More volunteers are needed with a wide mouth shovel.

Join us with shovels at Gate 123 Lesterfield Lane off the Ganmain Coolamon Road.  So far we have 9 volunteers, well done.

N.B.  Remember to put in your diary Monday 12th October for a Club Assembly Fellowship Discussion and Planning Meeting.  Everyone will have a chance for their say and to work for the future of our club.

Two hours later, Macca comes back carrying a slab of VB. Simmo says,”Where did you get that, Macca?”
“Chook’s missus gave it to me.” “That’s unbelievable, you told the lady her husband was dead and she
gave you beer?” Macca says, “Well not exactly. When she answered the door, I said to her, “You must be Chook`s widow.”

MODERN-DAY racism will be the theme of the keynote address at Rotary District 9700’s annual International Day of Peace in Wagga on September 20.

Steve Mark AM, chairman of the Australian section of the International Commission of Jurists and former president of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Board, will deliver the Royce Abbey Oration.

The speech will be part of Rotary’s International Day of Peace luncheon at the Wagga Country Club.

Wagga was declared a Peace City in 1993 and the concept, now known as peace communities, has spread around the world.

Cootamundra is the latest Riverina centre to me proclaimed a peace community, in November, 2014.

N. B.  Coolamon is the first Rotary Peace Town in the world.

Some of the richest and most biodiverse forests in Indonesia will soon be opened up for commercial exploitation under a plan drafted by the new government of Aceh.

The proposed spatial plan puts two huge forest conservation areas under threat. Nationally protected by Indonesian law, the 2.6 million-hectare tropical Leuser Ecosystem has been identified as one of the “world’s most irreplaceable protected areas” and is rapidly gaining support in Aceh and around the world to be fully recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Less than 6,300 Critically Endangered Sumatran orangutans remain. If this plan is passed by Indonesia’s Central Government, the Sumatran orangutan will slip into extinction within a few short years.

GUINNESS BOOK OF RECORDS ATTEMPT HAY CONVOY TO QUEENSLAND.

The mission:  To help our farmers who are facing real hardship in the face of severe drought, get on board and help Brendan and his team out!  Phone  0439322605.

The Goal to get 100 trucks to Queensland in January so far 34 have been sponsored.

There are two ways to sponsor:

1.  Pay for the fuel for one truck at $1,000 per truck
2. Donate hay/straw one semi takes 42 large bales of hay or straw.

The “Burrumbuttock to Bourke” Hay run has completed 7 successful hay runs and hoping to continue helping our farmers in drought affected areas.

Donations are to be made to the Rotary Club of Sydney as they handle all monetary donations on our behalf as we are not an organisation, just a bunch of blokes trying to help out a fellow Aussie in times of hardship.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG!

SEPTEMBER IS ROTARY Basic Education and Literacy Month

MEETING MONDAY SEPTEMBER 7th. 2015

Last night we had another great night of fellowship and one of our own new members as our guest speaker, Steve Exton.  Our guests were Helen Lewis and Alex Thompson, Alex has been invited to join our club and has accepted.

President Wayne welcomed all and here are his reminders for the upcoming week or so:

Volunteers needed for the Wollundry Gears and Beers Cycle event Sunday October 4th,  We have 7 volunteers now and require a further 5 at least to man the check points from 7.30 am to around lunch time.

AGM set for Monday October 26th to elect office bearers for the 2016-2017 Rotary year.

NYE Party looking great for a partnership with the Coolamon Shire and Coolamon Rotary as joint partners for this event.

N.B. Next Monday night is a board meeting with the Sports Club doing the catering.

Steve Exton

Steve works for the Department of Primary Industries and his talk was called Cattle, Skiing, Fishing, Rugby and Family.   Steve and his family, his wife Alison and children Bill and Jenna, love to travel and has seen the Northern Lights in Scandinavia, skied at Cortina and done a lot of fishing.  Steve has fished ON a frozen river on the borders of Finland and Norway.

Steve also enjoys scuba diving meeting whale sharks and loves Rugby!  Not that there is any rugby played in Coolamon.

Steve went onto to talk in depth of his work in the Agricultural extension field as a Livestock Officer Beef Products.  Steve has been involved in many aspects of beef production including molecular genetics, the National Livestock Identification Scheme, Feedlots, drought management bush fires and floods.

Steve is now involved on some international travel with the Department and will be visiting Indonesia soon.

Welcome to our club Steve and we look forward to enjoying your company over the years to come.

$Million Question

A contestant Sally, on ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire?’ had reached the final plateau. If she answered the next question correctly, she would win $1,000,000. If she answered incorrectly, she would pocket only the $25,000 milestone money.

And as she suspected it would be, the million-dollar question was no pushover. It was, ‘Which of the following species of birds does not build its own nest but instead lays its eggs in the nests of other birds? Is it:

A ) the condor

B ) the buzzard

C ) the cuckoo

D ) the vulture

The woman was on the spot. She did not know the answer. She had used up her 50/50 Lifeline and her Ask the Audience Lifeline. All that remained was her Phone-a-Friend Lifeline. She hoped she would not have to use it because her friend was, well, blonde. But she had no alternative.

She called her friend and gave her the question and the four choices.

The blonde responded unhesitatingly, ‘that’s easy. The answer is C: the cuckoo.’

The contestant had to make a decision and make it fast. She considered employing a reverse strategy and giving Meredith any answer except the one that her friend had given her. And considering her friend was a blonde that would seem to be the logical thing to do. But her friend had responded with such confidence, such certitude, that the contestant could not help but be convinced.

‘I need an answer,’ said Meredith.

Crossing her fingers, the contestant said, ‘C: The cuckoo.’

‘Is that your final answer?’

‘Yes, that is my final answer.’

And Meredith replied, ‘that answer is…. Absolutely correct! You are now a millionaire!’

Three days later, the contestant hosted a party for her family and friends, including the blonde who had helped her win the million dollars.

‘Joni, I just do not know how to thank you,’ said the contestant. ‘How did you happen to know the right answer?’

‘Oh, come on,’ said the blonde. ‘Everybody knows that cuckoos don’t build nests. They live in clocks.’

A wonderful story on membership from a fellow Rotarian in Mexico. Learn more about what Rotary clubs are doing to bring education and literacy to coastal communities in Nayarit, Mexico.

When Mariana Day moved in 1989 to the small beach town of Chacala, in Nayarit, Mexico, she noticed that the surrounding rural areas struggled to maintain schools. And most children weren’t able to go beyond an eighth-grade education. Day, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Bahía de Jaltemba-La Peñita, in Nayarit, had started a local scholarship program before she joined Rotary. Called Changing Lives, the program provided students with high school tuition, uniforms, school supplies, and transportation.

In addition, Rotary clubs from the United States and Mexico have been investing in the education of children in Nayarit since 2003, providing scholarships and libraries and rehabbing school buildings.

The lasting impact in the region is apparent.

In 1907, the Rotary Club of Chicago, under the leadership of Rotary International Founder Paul Percy Harris, initiated the first Rotary public service project: creating a public comfort station (also known as a public toilet).

This project launched Rotary onto its “service above self” path.

Early on, Harris realized that Rotary needed a greater purpose. While Harris served as president of the Chicago Rotary Club in 1907, the club initiated its first public service project, the construction of public toilets in Chicago. This step transformed Rotary into the world’s first Service Club.  The Rotary Club of Chicago performs one of its first acts of community service. The club calls a meeting of civic organizations to establish a committee for installing city comfort stations, or public toilets, to improve sanitation.

Extinction is forever! September 7 is National Threatened Species Day. This national day is held each year to commemorate the death of the last remaining Tasmanian tiger (also known as the thylacine) at Hobart Zoo in 1936.

Our friends at www.thebrink.org.au are this year raising awareness of the plight of the Northern Hairy Nosed Wombat. There are about 200 Northern Hairy Nosed Wombats left in existence. That makes them one of the most endangered mammal species in the world.

The most effective thing we can do to help the Northern Hairy-nosed wombat is to contact the Australian and Queensland Environment ministers, let them know about our concern, and ask them to help in ways that support the latest recovery plan for the Northern Hairy-nosed wombat. A friend received this e-mail from a friend in Zim and sent me this picture and story I thought was delightful.

They had been away at a game park and on the first evening, while sitting in front of the fire in the bar, in walked a fully grown warthog.   He walked over to the bar and without a word the barman handed him a pillow.

He took the pillow in his mouth, dropped it next to the fire and promptly lay down with his head on the pillow and went to sleep where, apparently he spends the cold nights.

In the morning he’s off into the bush again! My friend says that if the barman isn’t there, he’ll just grab a pillow off one of the couches!

AUGUST IS ROTARY MEMBERSHIP MONTH

Every club needs new members in order to be vibrant and active. New members introduce new ideas, bring fresh perspectives, and extend your club’s reach in the community.

MEETING MONDAY AUGUST 31st. 2015

Last night we had another great turn out of members and guests.  Our guest speaker was Past President Phil McIntosh from the Rotary Club of Wollundry.  Other guests were Gabby and Bill Thompson fellow climber Alex Thompson, Di, Marilyn Jennings and Helen Lewis.

Announcements included:

Cool Grass will be in Coolamon and we need volunteers for breakfast on Sunday 13th at Garth and Marg Perkins home.  Garth Perkin reported on the Australian Rotary Health Foundation meeting in Wagga Wagga.

Dave McKinley mooted the idea of Moo Poo which was well received.

Only one entry for the bulletin prize which was wrong and the member did not attend the answer was 80.  Sorry Rod!

GUEST SPEAKER PP PHIL McINTOSH WOLLUNDRY RC

Phil is the CEO of Commins Hendricks Solicitors and spoke on the upcoming cycling event that Wollundry are organising for Sunday October 4th.  Wollundry are looking for our club to supply 12 marshals for the event which will be coming to Coolamon.  Details can be found here:

Gears and Beers

Phil went on to give a great talk on this exciting festival and how it came about due to falling income from their weekly markets in the Myers car park in Wagga Wagga.  The idea has taken shape and this year will be bigger and better and raise around $30,000.

Phil pointed out that Wollundry have raised over $2.6 million since their charter, still a young club however the largest in D9700 with around 80 members.  Their Wine and Food Festival is renowned as are their monthly farmers markets.  However Phil says that to stay relevant a club must continue to evolve and take on new ideas.

Wollundry have been great supporters of our Road MAPS to Africa projects and have donated many thousands to our projects in Africa.

This year the Gears and Beers cycle run will have a new category called The Dirty One Thirty sponsored by RAPHA Clothing. (The World’s Finest Cycling Clothing and Accessories).

There are 5 categories in this event and all are timed to finish at the opening of the Beer and Cider Festival.

MOUNT KILIMANJARO 8 YEARS ON:

Our team from Australia and representing Coolamon Road MAPS to Africa projects climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in August 2007.  10 of the team of 16 reached Uhuru Peak at 19,340 feet high.  We also had 4 reach Stella Point.  We raised over $75,000 on this climb.  How time flies!

Coolamon Rotary through our Road MAPS to Africa projects and in particular the Mount Kilimanjaro Climb, recognised PP Butch Liebenberg with a PHF Sapphire pin.  We also recognised Sister Esther Carolus from Coolamon House in Hout Bay with a PHF.  There will be a full report in Bay Breezes the bulletin from our twin club enclosed.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

A doctor and his wife were having a blazing row at breakfast. He shouted at her “You’re not very good in bed either”. With that he stormed off to work. By dinner time he had calmed down and decided to phone his wife to apologise. He rang her and after about three minutes she finally answered.

“Why did you take so long answering the phone “

“I was in bed”. 

“What were you doing in bed this time of the day?”

“Getting a second opinion.”

I visited Rotary club members in Reno, Nevada, where I attended a District 5190 dinner and visited Veterans House, a project supported by local Rotary clubs.

With Rotarian CEO Noreen Leary at Veterans Guest House, a special facility that provides free accommodations to veterans and their families receiving treatment at an adjacent veterans hospital. Great involvement from local Rotary clubs.

Australia Rotary Health held very successful workshop last week, introducing three of our Indigenous medical Scholarship holders and outlining their dreams for the future. Each of them comes from Broken Hill and is studying at Charles Sturt Uni here in Wagga Wagga. The night was a perfect opportunity to have them all together as they were doing practical sessions on campus.

Taylor Degoumoi, Julieanne Hall, and Joanne Scoble all expressed their thanks to the sponsoring clubs, and outlined just what this meant for their future.  There were more than 40 Rotarians attending,representing a great number of clubs who were within reasonable driving reach, and all went home with a feeling that the programme was well worthwhile.

If you would like to sponsor an Indigenous Student, it is just $2500, which is then matched by ARH and its sponsors.
Six clubs from 9700 currently sponsor students, which is excellent.

It is very interesting that there is more than 93% of scholarship students who are able to graduate, which is outstanding.

ROTARY DAY AT THE UNITED NATIONS

Rotary’s relationship with the United Nations dates back to 1945 when some 49 Rotary members acted as delegates, advisors and consultants at the United Nations Charter Conference. Today, Rotary holds the highest consultative status possible with the United Nations as a non-governmental organization.

Rotary and the United Nations have a long history of working together and sharing similar visions for a more peaceful world.

Jeremy Irons says no. A legend in our books. A total honour to have him on our campaign. A man with a big heart and a big voice. From “Save Ireland’s Forests”,“Climate Revolution”, abolishing the death penalty with “Amnesty International” to his work with “Greenpeace – Save The Arctic”, and his epic narration for the amazing films “Seeds Of Freedom” and “Trashed”, which we adore, the list is endless.

His input in changing the world for a better place is outstanding, especially the plastic and pollution issues of our oceans and world. We can’t praise it enough.  An incredible man. Thank you Jeremy Irons

G.S.E. Group Study Exchange.

Those of you who have been in Rotary for a wee while will remember the G.S.E. programme of the Rotary Foundation.   We had many such visits form G.S.E. teams and I am sure you will remember the Scottish team from District 1010.  I have kept in touch with all 4 members of the team and last week Anne Sutherland wrote with a photo of her brand new twins.  I do miss G.S.E.
