Week of October 26th

This week’s meeting was primarily for fellowship.  Dinner was self-catered; John G and Garth did a top job barbecuing steaks and snags, and Henk organised the sides–thanks to all!.  No one left hungry (and if they did, it was their own fault).  We carried out a bit of business at the end, and finished with our weekly raffle.  Alex and Chez kindly donated a meat tray, which was won by Henk (if memory serves).  It was a good meeting to just chew the fat and have a catch-up.

Next week’s meeting features a guest speaker: Prof Rod Hill, Head of School of Biomedical Sciences at CSU.  Rod will be talking about some interesting new approaches to drug discovery, but has promised to keep it understandable by all! Hope to see you there.

Week of October 19th

This week’s meeting featured a guest speaker, Greg Wootton of Temora Rotary.  Greg described how the Rotary Club of Temora kept their club (and fund-raising) activities going through the COVID-19 pandemic using technology.  Because their meeting venue did not permit “clubs” to meet, they were forced to meet virtually, which they did using Zoom.  Greg and his wife Ingrid (also a Temora Rotarian with technology background) were able to assist all members getting up to speed with Zoom, so it was not uncommon to have 100% attendance at Zoom meeting by Temora Rotarians, which is a remarkable achievement.  Equally important, the club was able to continue their fund-raising activities during the pandemic shutdown, again with the assistance of technology.  Because their club was not able to sell raffle tickets in person, they resorted to using FaceBook to hold their annual firewood raffle, which actually generated a larger profit than in-person sales.  Greg was emphatic in his point that without the aid of technology, their club would have been unable to generate funds to support their charitable giving or to “meet” to do any planning or share any fellowship.  Paul thanked Greg (and Ingrid) for a very interesting talk and presented Greg with token of appreciation.

Sargeant-at-Arms Albert was able to find a way to fine a number of members for “noteworthy” or fictitious accomplishments over the past week, including Ted who doesn’t seem to know how to silence his phone.  As usual, the meeting concluded with a raffle, with a number of prizes going out to the lucky winners.  Next week’s meeting will be a self-catered barbecue, and an opportunity for extended fellowship–hope to see you there!

Wantabadgery Wagga Wagga Cycling Club Catering

Some photographs from a good weekend catering at Wantabadgery.  Our thanks to Anne Rzeszkowski for orgaising this catering fund raiser for our club and it is expected that we made $1400 net profit from the two days.  Our thanks to all of those members that volunteered to cook and serve on Saturday and Sunday.

Our club will support the Go Fund Me page for Moose Symons who lost part of his arm in an accident last week.  Here are some items of news on this tragedy for this young farmer.

On the 15th of October, Adam ‘Moose’ Symons had a farming accident and got his right arm tangled in a round baler which caused his arm to fully detach from his body. Being the tough bloke he is, he was able to drive his tractor, minus his right arm, 400 metres to help. With help from a quick thinking farmer, they were able to tourniquet his limb which helped save his life. He was flown directly to Canberra hospital where surgeons were able to re-attach his arm. Moose now faces a long road ahead with more surgeries planned and will need extensive medical attention and rehabilitation to determine what long term use he will have of his arm, hand and fingers. Funds raised from this page will go directly to help Moosa get the best medical attention and rehab he can get. Your support, thoughts and generosity are so extremely appreciated by Moose, Amanda, his family and friends!! Thank you!!

We formed a task force to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion to help clubs attract new members regardless of gender, race, religion, age, or other factors. This will help us speed up the change we all want and need. The selection of Jennifer E. Jones as Rotary president for 2022-23 — the first woman to lead our organization — is another step in this direction.

Week of October 12th

It’s been a few weeks since our last bulletin, in part because we had a with no meeting because of the October long weekend public holiday.  For our meeting of the week of September 28th, we had a guest speaker in the form of John Schmidt, a consulting electrical engineer and friend of John Bond, who spoke about photovoltaic systems and battery storage.  John shared some very revealing insights into electrical supply systems and the factors that make solar panels and battery storage systems a good option for households.  Consumers need to be careful about choosing a providers of solar panels as there are many shonky businesses selling solar panel systems.  Henk thanked the speaker for a very interesting talk and presented him with a souvenir Coolamon Rotary pen.

Over the October long weekend, Rotarians Alex Thompson and Chez Post tied the knot, after having to postpone their wedding which was initially scheduled for April (but had to be put off because of Covid restrictions).  After a lovely wedding ceremony that featured Alex and Chez’s two Italian greyhounds (including ring bearer Hadrian, who stole the show when the reverend asked Hadrian to bring forth the rings, which he promptly did!), a most enjoyable reception followed at the Little Rustic Pantry.  Several Rotarians and many of Alex and Chez’s friends and family were on hand to celebrate the joyous event.

This past week was a club assembly.  The major item of business was discussion of leasing a printer which would allow the club to print the Coolamon Community Chronicle ourselves and save money in the process.  Those in attendance recommended the lease of the printer to the board, which approved the lease agreement at Wednesday’s board meeting. As usual, the meeting concluded with a raffle and a very entertaining fine session led by Sargeant-At-Arms Albert.

Coolamon Rotary Bingo resumed on 8 October after a Covid-induced hiatus. There was a healthy rollup on the night, and a good time was had by all.  Thanks to Rotarians Brian, Dave, Bondy and Paul, who ran the event on the night.  Members are encouraged to attend Bingo on the second Thursday of each month (except January) to help keep the event lively and financially viable.

The collar that Jennifer is significant as it represents Jennifer’s tribute to a woman who enabled Jennifer to break through the glass ceiling that is Rotary.  Jennifer was selected on merit and her work as a Rotarian and deserves our congratulations.  It is also fitting that our District Governor in 2022-2023 will be DGN Geraldine Rurenga.

Week of September 21st

This week’s meeting was an opportunity for planning and fellowship.  Twenty members and two guests were in attendance, a great roll-up for a regular meeting.  Discussion centred on the upcoming NSW Junior Cycling Championships that the club has agreed to cater in Wantabadgery and the Monster Raffle which will run over the next few months, concluding at New Year’s Eve. One of the guests was Sally Farmer, who has taken over organising the Coolamon Community Chronicle from Myffy.  Sally was congratulated for the excellent job she’s been doing with the Chronicle.  The evening concluded with another amusing fine session led by Sargent-at-Arms Albert, who managed to win the raffle again.  An investigation has been launched into the running of the raffle as the raffle has been won by the person running the raffle (Albert) two weeks running.  Stay tuned….

The TIME 100 List

Rotary International and Rotary foundation announces with great pride that one of our own has been named one of TIME’s “100 Most Influential People in the World.” Just a few moments ago, Dr. Tunji Funsho, Rotary’s Nigeria National PolioPlus Chair was named to the TIME 100 list for his critical leadership in working with Rotary members and our partners to achieve a wild polio-free Nigeria and eradicate the wild poliovirus in the African region. He is the first Rotary member to receive this honor for our work to eradicate polio.

The TIME 100 list recognizes the activism, innovation and achievement of the world’s most influential individuals. Dr. Funsho joins the list with some of the most important and well-known public figures in the world who have been past recipients of the honour: heads of state such as Angela Merkel, religious figures like the Dalai Lama and Pope Francis, celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Bono, philanthropists like Bill Gates, and activists such as Malala Yousafzai.

Dr. Funsho stands on the shoulders of the countless women and men of Rotary who have dedicated their lives, their time, and their money to Rotary’s top priority of eradicating polio. This honour is not just a testament to his work, it is acknowledgment that Rotary members make a difference in the world—one that is worthy of international recognition among the world’s most distinguished leaders. September is Rotary Basic Education and Literacy Month

Week of September 14th

The club continues to meet in person at the Coolamon Sport and Rec Club, although with greater spacing between attendees than some would like!  Nonetheless, it’s great to be able to meet face to face.  Following routine weekly business at the meeting, Paul gave an update on COVID-19 after reading an interesting report describing recent findings about how the virus affects the body.  Rather than primarily being a respiratory virus, the SARS-Cov-2 virus (the virus that causes the disease) actually attacks the vascular system.  Researchers at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, performed a detailed analysis of genes in the cells of victims of COVID-19 and compared them with healthy individuals, and found that one protein, in particular, was affected by the virus: bradykinin.  Bradykinin is involved in regulation of blood pressure, but levels are normally tightly controlled (the protein is rapidly broken down in the body–i.e. in a matter of seconds.  The researchers found that the gene coding for production of bradykinin was greatly amplified in COVID-19 sufferers.  Elevated levels of bradykinin would lead to leakage of fluid from blood vessels throughout the body, not just in the lungs.  This explains many of the symptoms observed in patients with COVID-19, including difficulty breathing, brain abnormalities, heart problems and the unusual symptom known as COVID toe, in which bruising occurs in the toes (the result of damage to blood vessels in the toes).  Another very revealing finding was the fact that infection with SARS-Cov-2 leads to increased production of hyaluronic acid, which seeps into the lungs when capillaries leak plasma into the alveoli (where gas exchange takes place in the lungs); the result is the formation of a hydrogel, a jelly-like substance which makes it nearly impossible for oxygen to enter the blood vessels in the alveoli.  This explains why many COVID-19 victims are not helped by ventilators even though these devices ensure that there’s plenty of oxygen in the lungs.  These findings offer hope of medical therapy to assist COVID-19 victims; there are currently a number of drugs designed to lower the level of bradykinin in the blood, so these medicines may help alleviate some of the symptoms of the malady.  These drugs would not be “cures” for COVID-19, but they might relieve suffering and spare the lives of victims until an effective vaccine can be developed for COVID-19.

The evening concluded with another rousing fine session from Sargent-at-Arms Albert and a raffle.

Answer to last week’s puzzler: Turn one switch on and leave it on, leave one off, and turn the third switch on for a minute and then turn it off.  Then go into the other room and look at the lamps; the one with the globe lit is obviously connected to the switch that was left on.  Then feel the two unlit globes; the one that’s cool is controlled by the switch that was left off, and the one that’s warm is controlled by the switch that was turned on and then off before you left the room with the switches.

One of the world’s most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics is The Four-Way Test, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor (who later served as RI president) when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy.

This 24-word test for employees to follow in their business and professional lives became the guide for sales, production, advertising, and all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the company is credited to this simple philosophy. Adopted by Rotary in 1943, The Four-Way Test has been translated into more than a hundred languages and published in thousands of ways.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG

Week of September 7th

This week’s meeting was just a bit of planning and fellowship.  Plans for the upcoming Monster Raffle were discussed, along with a range of projects including tree planting (to be done over the next couple of weekends), articles for the Chronicle, the return of Bingo, etc.  The meeting concluded with a raffle and fines by Sargent at Arms Albert, who this week fined himself.  In a touch of karma justice, Albert won the raffle.

Beirut Calling – Rotary helps Lebanon ACT Government donation welcomed

Rotary Clubs across the ACT and southern NSW, in Rotary District9705, have welcomed the prompt and generous donation of $5,000 from the ACT Government towards funds being raised by regional Rotary Clubs to support the Rotary Club of Beyrouth in Lebanon.

In response to the colossal 4 August explosion in Beirut’s port, theRotary Club of Beyrouth is focusing on supporting the paediatric section of the Karantina Government Hospital, which was severely afected by the explosion and will require funds for equipment and medical supplies.

TRACY OCHIENG UPDATE

I just wanted to bring you up to date with Tracy’s progress and I will be brief:

• Tracy has been studying from home in Kisumu but has now returned to Nairobi.
• Tracy is still at the United States International University in Nairobi.
• Tracy is studying for her degree in journalism and graduates in September 2022.
• Coolamon Rotary is sponsoring Tracy and are paying her fees on time.
• PDG Fred Loneragan and I are supporting her with help when required.
• Fred and I are confident that Tracy will see it to the end and graduate and if we can travel by then I will be there in 2022.
• Sally Farmer has asked Tracy to write a monthly newsletter of life in Nairobi for our Coolamon Community Chronicle.  This will help her in her journalism degree in addition to providing readers with a view of life from a very different vantagepoint.
• Tracy’s goal is still to start her Big Sisters Project for Mathare to give vulnerable and at risk girls, like she was once, an opportunity that Tracy got when Fred and I met her in November 2011 in Mathare.

1. ROTARY ACADEMY THE PHILIPPINES

Wednesday night is Rotary Academy night from District 3780 in The Philippines.  On the 9th last Wednesday PDG JG was invited to make a presentation on Rotary Action Groups and Rotary Fellowships.  It was a very well organised event with a large Zoom audience of 123 and an even larger live Facebook gathering.

JG was introduced by a Brigadier General Daway of the Philippines National Police,PNP, where they have a Rotary Club, Camp Crame in the headquarters of the PNP in Quezon City.  The Brigadier General is their President Elect.  The meeting started with an invocation and the national anthem of The Philippines.

2. ROTARY CLUB OF EAST NASSAU

Hard to believe that it was 12 months ago that hurricane Dorian leveled the Island of Abaco.  We have now been able to send $2,500 to the RC of East Nassau and it has been received.  Thanks Henk Hulsman for your patience with this transfer.

Week of August 31st

This week’s meeting featured another guest speaker, Kieran Knox, a Coolamon native who has spent the last several years in the mining industry in Africa.  Kieran described the nature of mining and daily life in Africa. The mining is done using a combination of open pits (extending to a depth of 800 m or more) and tunnels, which typically go 1 km deeper! Daily life included encounters with elephants on the roads (who have the right of way because who dares to tell them otherwise!) and gun-toting paramilitary, who frequently require payment to keep their ammunition to themselves. Keiran moved frequently from country to country as the job required (five countries over nine years) and certainly accumulated a lifetime of experiences that will be shared with family and friends for years to come.  Kieran was able to achieve a long-time ambition while in Africa: he got to have a monkey (a vervet from the looks of it) as a pet! Howard thanked Kieran for a most interesting and engaging talk, and presented him with a token gift as a memento.

As usual, the meeting concluded with a raffle and another entertaining fine session led by Sargent at Arms Albert, who surprisingly found nothing to fine Grahame for this week.

2. ROTARY DOWN UNDER

The times they are a-changing friends! And in all kinds of feel good ways. We have our first female RI President-Nominee (well, not officially until 1 October, but who’s counting?), we have the world’s very first Rotaract Pride Club in support of the LGBTIQ+ community, and, after decades of work across 47 countries on the continent, the World Health Organisation has declared the African region wild poliovirus-free! In a time when ‘the new normal’ is the catchphrase on everyone’s lips, we are loving the look of this ‘new normal’!

Week of August 24th

We had a guest speaker at our weekly meeting, former club member and PP Marg Perkin.  Marg gave a talk on her trip to Cambodia in November of last year, and delivered supplies and amenities to a school in Pnom Penh and visited an eye clinic in Battambang (as well as taking in some tourist sites).  It was startling to see the conditions facing people in parts of SE Asia, but also heartwarming to see the bright faces of enthusiastic schoolchildren and their appreciation of the gifts and educational programs brought by Marg and the other members of the team of Help Cambodia.  The children entertained the visitors with performances of traditional dance and song, attired in handmade costumes typical of the region.  President Howard presented Marg with a token of appreciation of Marg’s talk, which made quite an impression on those in attendance.

As usual, the meeting concluded with an entertaining fines session led by Sargent-at-Arms Albert, and as usual, Grahame seemed to dominate the recipient list.  It must have been a slow week, because Albert actually fined himself for a bone-headed move, although it was probably a pre-emptive maneuver because he would have likely been fined by a member who was witness to the event (you’ll have to ask Albert for details, or better yet, come to our weekly meetings to hear these things firsthand!). Fittingly, Albert ended up winning the raffle.  Speaking of raffles, the street raffle held on Saturday was quite productive; thanks to the members who endured the chilly conditions to make it all possible (sorry, I can’t find the roster to mention the members by name).

1. PAUL HARRIS FELLOW (PHF)

The Paul Harris Fellow award is the highest award and recognition where a Rotarian can nominate a well deserving person to receive this award.  That person can be a fellow club member, another Rotarian from another club or a member of the public.

The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of US$1,000 to The Rotary Foundation.

Rotary established the recognition in 1957 to encourage and show appreciation for substantial contributions to what was then the Foundation’s only program, Rotary Foundation Fellowships for Advanced Study, the precursor to Ambassadorial Scholarships.

Paul Harris Fellow Recognition is both an award for exemplary work in community service or helping those in need, or a method of recognising a substantial donation to The Rotary Foundation.

These awards have been presented to many outstanding leaders in the community, as well as to “ordinary people doing extraordinary things“.  Paul Harris Fellow recognitions have been awarded to over 40,000 people in Australia, and more than 1.3m worldwide.

2. MEMBERSHIP FORUMS

Membership is a critical element of Rotary.

Without members, our organisation would be unable to continue the vital work of Rotary in our local communities and around the world.

Our District Membership Team have secured five speakers for their upcoming Membership Forums, which will provide inspiration and ideas to recruit and retain members; different types of clubs; and how clubs can grow.

Our first speaker in this series will be our very own District Governor Nominee, Geraldine Rurenga from the Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga Murrumbidgee.

3.  AFRICA DECLARED WILD POLIO VIRUS FREE

In 1996, the great African leader Nelson Mandela launched the Kick Polio Out of Africa campaign with Rotary International’s support, setting out a vision for a polio-free Africa. At the time, wild polio paralysed 75,000 children each year. To protect communities from this crippling disease, African leaders, health workers, volunteers, parents, global donors and organizations united to reach every child with polio vaccines.

On 25 August 2020, after four years without a single case of wild polio, the African region has been certified free of wild poliovirus. Decades of extraordinary investment has paid off.

Yet, the job is not finished. These efforts must continue to prevent wild polio from returning and to end all forms of polio for good – both in Africa and globally. #rotaryinternational #endpolionow

August is Rotary Membership and New Club Development Month

Week of August 17th

We’re fortunate to be able to continue to meet in person (with appropriate social distancing) considering the restrictions on gatherings in New South Wales.  We had a good roll-up at our weekly meeting, and those in attendance were rewarded with free drinks courtesy of Bern, whose horse Man of Peace won again at Randwick.  The evening feature our first guest speaker of the Rotary year (more on that later) as well as a special ceremony acknowledging the contributions of one of our members.  Howard kept the members in suspense as he described the contributions of this member, most notably extensive involvement with Gears and Beers and the construction of the food van shed.  Those who hadn’t already guessed the person were clued in when Howard noted that this person had served as president for 1-1/2 years, which could only have been Daryl Breust, who served as president in 2018-2019 and for the second half of 2019-2020.  For his dedicated service, Daryl was named a Paul Harris Fellow, an award that was richly deserved.  Daryl was soundly applauded for this accomplishment.

Our guest speaker was our entomologist member Paul, who spoke about dung beetles and the project that currently employs him, the Dung Beetle Ecosystems Engineers project.  Paul shared some interesting life history facts about dung beetles, especially the tunnelling species that were introduced by CSIRO to take care of livestock dung which began accumulating in the landscape after the British colonists introduced cattle and other livestock to Australia.  Paul described the many benefits that dung beetles provide to Australian agriculture and introduced the Dung Beetle Ecosystems Engineers project, which is a multi-million dollar project funded by the federal government and Meat and Livestock Australia with many objectives and cooperating institutions.  CSU is heading up the project, and Paul and Leslie are heavily involved in the project.  For more details, visit the Dung Beetle Ecosystem Engineers (DBEE) website (https://www.dungbeetles.com.au/).  The presentation inspired many questions from those in attendance.

Albert led another entertaining fine session, which left those in attendance with a smile on their faces and a few less coins in their pockets, especially Grahame.

The Coolamon Rotary board of directors held their monthly meeting at the Coolamon Convent on Wednesday.  Although there were not a large number of resolutions passed, there was much productive discussion on a range of topics.  The minutes will be distributed to members shortly.
