Coolamon Rotary Bulletin #1819-2

Week of 9th July

A small but dedicated turn out of members and their guest were at the meeting to greet newly minted President Daryl and District Governor John this week. Daryl asked the members put their thinking hats on regarding the efforts and direction of Coolamon Rotary over the course of the next 12 months. Wayne also informed members of  an opportunity to help remote aboriginal populations in the prevention and treatment of trachoma by funding the cost of transporting a container of goods and medicines that will aid in the battle against this condition. The Fred Hollows foundation has more information if you are interested.

Guest Speaker:  District Governor John Glassford

Our very own John Glassford, the new District Governor, gave a talk on his vision of what he and District 9700 are aiming to achieve for Rotary and its causes in the coming year.  Central to his message was that he and the district are there to serve the members in Rotary to do the good work that they do in their communities and he encouraged clubs to tell him what they need. However, he also reminded us that we can support Rotary by talking about what it is we do and why we do it  – because we care about each other and our communities.

John then went on to outline some of the causes he will be supporting as DG for the year. These included:

  • A legacy time capsule in each peace town and village to commemorate the 100 anniversary of armistice  to end World War 1. The capsules will be opened 100 years from now and will raise money for Legacy.
  • A Polio Plus bike torch relay  with a goal to raise $500,000 by riding through every town in the district. The money raised will help eradicate polio worldwide and with only 11 cases diagnosed this year this is a real possibility
  • The District Conference in Griffith with fantastic line up of guest speakers to help celebrate and promote women in Rotary.

We all look forward to an exciting Rotary year ahead.

District Govenor John Glassford

Coolamon News Bulletin #1819-1

Week of 2 July

Because of the changeover on Saturday, there was no meeting this week.  This issue of the bulletin features a number of photos from the changeover and a letter from Immediate Past President Paul.

Parting words from IPP Paul Weston

Well, another Rotary year is over, and it’s time to look toward the new year.  Before we do, I just wanted to reflect on the past year, review our accomplishments and acknowledge those that helped to make this past year memorable.

Our year started with welcoming the arrival of Lucia Bohnsack, a Rotary exchange student from Germany.  Lucia is our first exchange student in some time, and has added an interesting dimension to Rotary events, the lives of her host families, and to the Coolamon Central School community.  It has been a very full year for Lucia, who heads back to Germany next week.  It was a great experience for all, and we wish Lucia the best in her future endeavours.  We look forward to future visits from Lucia, and know that if we ever visit Germany, we’ll have a home waiting for us there.

Early in the year we celebrated Christmas in July, another first in many years.  Although there was no snow, the cold weather made it feel a bit like a Northern Hemisphere winter, even to transplants such as Leslie and me.  I hope this is a tradition that continues.  From there, we sped through the Rotary year, helping out with Gears and Beers, the Historic Fire Engine Muster, New Year’s Eve, Easter Markets, the Red Shield Appear and, finally, the changeover, a historic one for the club because the incoming District Governor was one of our own.  Punctuating the major activities were our monthly bingo, periodic District 9700 happenings (e.g. DisTect, PETS, and the district conference), street raffles, catering at several clearing sales, and this year, a number of events focussed on mental health (two mental health forums and the Mental Health First Aid training course).  The completion of another edition of the Coolamon Rotary telephone directory and monthly issues of the Coolamon Community Chronicle rounded out our club activities.  I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the several social events we held at the newly renovated convent courtesy of member Howard and his partner Anne, and the pleasantly numerous induction ceremonies we held this year!

All of these events required substantial person-power, which was largely provided by the members of Coolamon Rotary.  I appreciate the dedication of our members and their willingness to put service above self, one of our key guiding principles.  I am proud of our achievements over the past year, and I hope our members share that sense of pride.  I think we ended the Rotary year in a stronger position that we started, which is all a leader can ask for.  I thank all of our members for their contributions over the year, and thank Leslie for her patience with my time commitment to our club and Rotary as a whole.  Finally, I hope that recognising several of our members (Myffy Colette, Wayne Lewis and Bernadette Milne) with PHFs will convey to them how much we deeply appreciate their personal sacrifices and commitment to Rotary.  I’m sure all the members join me in wishing President Daryl and DG John the best as they start the new Rotary year, and will be there to help out throughout the year.

Coolamon Rotary News Bulletin #23

Monday 25th June

President Paul welcomed 20 members, including infrequently seen Will C, plus guests Helen L, Peta & Charlie Wykes, Jan N, Jan B, Sharon M, Maureen H, Digby, Jodie & Abigail Graham, Lexi F & last but not least our exchange student Lucia.

Secretary John B read out correspondence before we settled down for a beaut Chinese banquet, which was enjoyed by all except John N, who was spoilt with prawn cutlets, etc.

Paul called for volunteers for several activities taking place this week  –

Cutting/splitting firewood on Thursday arvo for Saturday’s street raffle. Contact Wayne (6927 3501) for directions if you’re able to help.

Setting up Ganmain Hall on Friday at 1 pm for the changeover on Saturday night.

Street raffle on Saturday morning (6:00-noon).

President Paul thanked all members for their contributions over the past year, noting that Monday’s meeting was the last of his year as president.

Guest Speaker, Lucia Bohnsack

Lucia then did a fantastic presentation of her experiences during her year in Australia, showing slides of her host families, many of the places she has visited, Australian holidays she has experienced and how they differ from those in Germany, some of the Aussie colloquialisms she has learnt, and some of the uniquely Aussie foods she has come to enjoy such as Vegemite, meat pies, Golden Gaytimes, Pavlova, Milo, snags, Tim Tams, etc. Paul thanked Lucia and presented her with a pair of earrings to serve as an additional souvenir of her time in Coolamon, Lucia’s new home on the other side of the world.  Lucia invited all in attendance to visit her and her family if they’re ever in Germany.

Lucia gave a wonderful talk on her experiences in Australia. Her bright and open personality means touched everyone heart in some way and she will be missed by her host families and the rotary club in general when she returns home.

A number of members have not been sending in apologies when they are unable to attend our weekly meeting.  This causes problems for the caterer and our club, and results in wasted food.  We will be strictly enforcing the policy of charging members for meals if they have not sent in an apology, whether they are in attendance or not.

Coolamon Rotary News Bulletin #22

Monday 18th June

Paul welcomed 19 members & guest Helen L.  Secretary John read out correspondence.

Next week is send off evening for Lucia.

Daryl & Paul met with Assistant Principal Josh Celi at Coolamon Central School to discuss working relationship with Rotary in conjunction with RYDA, CCC,  Youth Exchange, etc. The main item of discussion was financial support for a community youth welfare officer, which the club is eager to support.  Both parties are keen to develop a stronger relationship with the goal of enriching educational and other support for students at the school and in the community.

The night featured talks by three of our members.  Lyn Schadel gave a brief talk on her life and her great tribe of grandchildren, which was followed by a brief talk by Ann Rzeszkowski on her life, including her very interesting work with the irrigation district in Coleambally.

John Nulty then made a presentation on his time serving in Vietnam back in 1968/69 and showed a wealth of revealing photos from 50 years ago.

Ted finished the night with an entertaining fine session.

The evening concluded with a brief discussion of plans for the upcoming changeover.

IMPORTANT REMINDER: A number of members have not been sending in apologies when they are unable to attend our weekly meeting.  This causes problems for the caterer and our club, and results in wasted food.  We will be strictly enforcing the policy of charging members for meals if they have not sent in an apology, whether they are in attendance or not.

Monday 4th June

Paul welcomed 20 members plus guest Barry Lillywhite.

Paul thanked all those members who volunteered collecting for Red Shield Appeal over the past 2 weekends. Just over $2000 was collected.

Secretary John read out quite a bit of correspondence (see cheques in and receipts, etc. in email from John Bond sent to members).

Youth Director Dave gave an overview of how Lucia is going and places she will be staying over her remaining 6 weeks. Dave thanked Henk for  bookwork he’s done on his behalf for Lucia. She flies out for home on July 9th; hasn’t the year flown?!

Club Assembly discussions

Monies to be donated to organisations at the change-over – board to make those decisions at the next board meeting.

There was a bit of discussion about working with Coolamon Central School in conjunction with the Chronicle (e.g. adding a web version of the paper) and support for a student welfare officer at the school.

Discussion on proposed location for public toilets at back of fire museum and concerns regarding children crossing the main road. A letter will be sent to council to voice our concerns.

Discussion regarding fund-raising for a local family having issues with cancer – decision to be made by board.

John G discussed planning for the Changeover and suggests members book and pay for the night beforehand.

Daryl requested the food van committee have a meeting to discuss a few issues in restructuring the internals of the van – next Monday at 4.30 is proposed time at this stage, but to be confirmed by Grahame.

Ted led a very lively and somewhat controversial fine session.

Exchange student Lucie posing in front of the Big Merino in Goulburn on her recent trip to Sydney with Graham and Sharon.

Coolamon Rotary News Bulletin #20

Monday 28th May

Paul welcomed 19 members plus guests Anne, Jan, Russell Barrow (CSU) & friends of Daryl & Jan,  Bob & Val Robertson & Bill & Michelle Roberts.

Secretary John read out correspondence.

President Paul had to compete with raffle ticket seller Dick to tell us about an New Ideas planning meeting on June 15; further suggestions for projects are welcome, so if you have an idea let Paul know.

On 15 June from 9.30 to 12.30 at the Up-To-Date Store is a workshop for community & sporting groups, clubs & communities in The Coolamon Shire.  To register for the event, RSVP to Jess Inch by 1 June.

Guest Speaker Daryl Bruest

Guest Speaker Daryl spoke on his trek of Kokoda 30 months ago when he spent 8 days there.  It had been a dream of Daryl’s to conquer the track & so to celebrate his 60th birthday he invited family members to join him.

They flew into Port Moresby, which they didn’t find to be a very safe place. They then travelled to Popendetta, where they were all packed into open back trucks to travel 2 hours along mostly unsealed roads to the start of the track. They trekked in groups of 20 & had to carry their own rations.

The troupe started about 7 in the morning and had a rest every 2 or 3 hours for up to 30 mins.   The track is very rough with exposed tree roots, etc, which meant you can’t take your eyes off the ground to avoid tripping.   They stayed in a village each night. The trek lasted for 7 days with the last day being the hardest. Daryl greatly admired the strength and fortitude of the porters; and his son donated all his clothes and boots to one of the porters at the end of the trek and received a beautiful hand-carved plaque in return.

There are many memorials along the way, most of which were funded by Australian Government, as is the school at  Kokoda

After an absorbing presentation, Daryl was thanked by Henk.

Daryl’s talk was very inspirational

Coolamon Roratry New Bulletin #18

Tuesday 15th May 2018

President Paul welcomed Coolamon Roatary members as well as representative members from across the region including Temora, Junee, Wollundry and Wagga. A few housekeeping issues were addressed (please see the diary) before we sat down to enjoy our meal prior to listening to our guest speaker, RI director Noel Trevaskis. The opportunity to converse with members of other Rotary clubs was fantastic.

Guest Speaker, Noel Trevaskis

Noel gave the members in attendance a rousing talk on Rotary membership and the purpose of Rotary and pointed out a number of issues that have real implications for the future of Rotary.

Noel Joined Rotary in Bega in 1996, with a strong interest in Australia Rotary health after having suffered a serious bout of depression.  He later became president of the club with a focus on community mental health awareness. Noel informed us that it was his desire to be of service to the community in a field where he felt he could share his experience was a major motivation for joining Rotary himself, and his efforts have helped to break down the stigma attached to mental illness. In 2003 Rotary International awarded him the Service Above Self award and in 2005 he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his work in this area.

In 2005-2006 Noel served as governor of district 9710, then in 2007 he was regional Rotary International membership coordinator for Zone 8 before going on in 2011 to Rotary coordinator of Zone 8. Currently Noel is project lead for membership for Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific.

His experience working with membership in Rotary has highlighted a number of major issues challenging Rotary as we move into the future, the biggest among them being that in the next 10-15 years the world wide membership of Rotary will change significantly because the average age is of Rotarians in the Western nations of Europe, Australia, New Zealand and North America  is 71. The average age of members in the Asian, African and South American nations is significantly younger, with the result being that Rotary within the next 10 years is predicted to have over 50% of its members in these nations. It also means the ageing membership in western nations will be forced to amalgamate clubs and districts, as is currently happening in Australia.

A second major concern Noel raised was that in 1990 Rotary had 1.2 million members, but that number has remained static despite the world population increasing by 40% in that time. In other words, per capita Rotary membership is on the decline.

Noel then hit the audience with some hard facts illustrating with a personal anecdote the cold reception he got from another community service club and said that Rotary is no exception to this type of attitude. He then went on to tell the audience that the top two reasons that people want to join Rotary is to give back to the community via community service and to meet people and form meaningful relationships and that when many leave two years later they say that they left because there was no opportunity for community service or forming  new friendships.

Noel illustrated that this was primarily because many clubs had their priorities backward, focusing on fundraising efforts with no real idea about what they are going to raise funds for before the end of year when they send a check away. Noel said that clubs need to state up font to the community at all their events that they are raising money for a particular community service so people in the community know what they are supporting with their dollars.

On the friendship side of things, Noel stressed that clubs must be inclusive, to not worry about how often members can attend meetings as long as they were still engaging with Rotary. He also strongly suggested that each club form subgroups of three which are responsible for bringing in one new person into the club each year, saying that groups of three tend to have the greatest success rate.

Noel finished by saying that the time is “Now” to start doing things to prepare Rotary for the future; we can no longer spend the time thinking or putting it off. By the end all members in attendance were raring to take on the challenge.

Noel named John Harper of Temora an honorary Rotarian for his community service in relation to mental health.
Dick thanked Noel for his rousing talk.
